‘X-Men’ Writers Land ‘Top Gun’ Sequel Gig

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz in final negotiations to pen upcoming flick. By Kara Warner Tom Cruise in “Top Gun” Photo: Paramount Pictures Just about one year ago, Tony Scott sent his “Top Gun” fans into a frenzy over the news that a sequel is not only planned, but Scott will take the directorial reins on the project. There has been little forward movement since then, but now we have word that “X-Men: First Class” writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz have been hired to helm the script. According to Variety, Miller and Stentz are in final negotiations to get to work on the screenplay, with Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison signed on to produce. The trade publication claimed that there are no plot details to reveal yet, but we’re hoping the “First Class” writing duo sticks with the outline Scott shared with us last year. “It’s not even a reinvention, it’s not even a sequel. It’s a re-thinking,” Scott said of his plans for the sequel. “What inspired me is that the world today is great, it’s so different from the world we touched originally. It’s really run by guys sitting in Nevada on computers playing war games.” Scott teased that the film will focus on the new generation of fighter pilots. “It’s a mixture of that, and it’s the end of the generation of fighter pilots. Not in a complete end to the generation, because these guys they go up in F-35s and they carry 10 drones with them. [But] it’s a very different movie,” he said. But the most pressing question on everyone’s minds is: Will Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer reprise their iconic roles? “I’m gonna withhold that information,” Scott told MTV News. “I can’t say anything. I’m talking with Jerry [Bruckheimer], and I’m going to withhold [those other details].” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Postcard from Venice: Fassbender Brings Glory to Shame; Pacino Reigns in Wilde Salome

When Steve McQueen’s Hunger debuted at Cannes in 2008, Michael Fassbender — playing Irish hunger-strike activist Bobby Sands — was a revelation. Now he’s ubiquitous, potentially to the point of overexposure, appearing in comic-book blockbusters ( X-Men: First Class ) and tony literary adaptations ( Jane Eyre ) alike. Yet each performance, and each project, is so different from the last that it’s still a joy to watch him. He has one of the gifts that great actors need, the ability to be focused and unselfconscious at the same time. He knows when to surrender and when to call every muscle and brain cell to attention. I fear someday he’ll win an Oscar and risk losing it all.

Frank Langella to Name Drop Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, and More in Memoirs

Stage and film vet Frank Langella has been in the business for nearly five decades, working with everyone from Arthur Miller to Laurence Olivier, and in his upcoming memoirs Dropped Names — just acquired by Harper Collins — the actor will regale readers with his experiences rubbing elbows with some of Hollywood’s most iconic personalities. Fingers crossed he gets to talking about his Whoopi Goldberg years somewhere between his Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor chapters. [ NYT ]

Watch the Lady Gaga Parody ‘X-Men: Born This Way’: Little Mutants for Little Monsters

Somehow, Lady Gaga’s uber-hyped single “Born This Way” made an impact here at Movieline. I encouraged the medium convergence, as the self-love-touting single could work as an anthem for many cinematic characters. Now, YouTube parodists have taken up that lead, mashing up Gaga’s song with X-Men: First Class ‘s mutant beginnings. You’ll remember that the movie and the original song are pretty much about the same thing , anyway. The first line alone will slay you.

1984 really was a brave nude world: in a nude move that would be all but impossible today, the PG-rated family film Splash splashed into theaters, complete with Daryl Hannah ‘s bare boobs and bum. 1984 was also the year that The Woman in Red received a PG-13 rating, despite a flash of full frontal nudity (and nearly two minutes of boobies) from fantasy female Kelly LeBrock .
