A local tsunami alert has been issued by Indonesia after an earthquake with 7.4 magnitude hit near the province of Aceh. Aceh is located on the north-western tip of Sumatra and is frequently rocked by earthquake. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck offshore at 1259 (0059 GMT), 214 km (133 miles) south-east of the provincial capital of Banda Aceh and had a depth of 61.4km. The site is very close to that of 2004’s 9.2 magnitude earthquake that triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami, which killed about 220,000 people. The epicenter of the latest earthquake was about 66km (41miles) south-west of Meulaboh district. Indonesia is situated on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of tectonic activity encircling the Pacific Ocean that triggers earthquakes and volcanic activity.
