The Italian greyhound named after a depraved Roman emperor. The finely tailored suits and empty gun holsters. The mustache that made him look like Kevin Kline. They’re all gone now. On Sunday, Interpol announced they had parted ways with bassist/fashionplate Carlos D, the man who had played with the band since its early NYU days, and who, thanks to his darkly dapper dress and various eccentricities, had become a fan favorite, not to mention a style icon. In a statement posted on their official site (which, at press time was down), the band said that Carlos D (real last name: Dengler) had left the group following the completion of their fourth album, because “he has decided to follow another path, and to pursue new goals.” “This separation is amicable, and we whole-heartedly wish him great happiness and success,” the statement reads. “We remain, as always, deeply respectful fans of this blazingly talented individual.” In recent years, Dengler had branched out into composing music for film and commercials. Some of his work can be heard over on his site, CarlosDengler.com . Interpol did not announce a replacement for Dengler, but said they have lined up “some very exciting new recruits” to join them on their upcoming tour, which sees them opening for U2. In the statement, the band also wrote that they have completed work on their still-untitled new album — recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York — and that it’s a “heavy record.” Recently, the band unveiled “Lights,” the first song off the album, which is due later this year.
