In an e-mail to the McClatchy Newspapers service, a spokesperson for the division’s 4th Brigade Combat Team said that the video — already viewed more than 3 million times on YouTube — represented soldiers having a good time in the face of daunting challenges, and that their commanders had no problem with it. “The brigade command team is happy to see that they also still have a good sense of humor and that morale is high,” Maj. Michelle Baldanza, a spokeswoman in Afghanistan for the Combat Team, wrote in an e-mail. “The soldiers have a challenging mission there, and they were just having a good time and blowing off some steam in their downtime.” The “Telephone” remake features beefy soldiers cavorting in cardboard boxes, reflective tape and what appears to be tinsel. The mastermind behind the video is reportedly Sgt. Aaron Melcher, who uploaded the clip. Writing under his YouTube handle “MalibuMelcher,” the 24-year-old initially told viewers they should”prepare [themselves] for a fantastical journey,” before adding that the video was just the “temporary version … we have more scenes to cut and edit, however, with guys always on a mission it is harder to film than you think.” Last week, as the video began to pick up steam, Melcher took to his Facebook page (where he had originally posted the video on April 23, declaring it “the hotness) and updated his status to say, “OK, everybody — this can be labeled INSANE now — over 35,000 hits — and multiple news stations have the video.” He then thanked his newfound fans for their support and told them to watch for his “Telephone” remake’s appearance on “Good Morning America.” What do you think of the Fort Bragg soldiers covering Gaga?
