Not our kids, but we hate kids. For example, today we were in the library, checking out Tinkerbell’s biography, when what we thought was a midget, came up to us and asked “What are you doing?” – “Reading a book, what about you?” we replied, but the kid just smiled and ran. What kind of person asks questions and doesn’t reply when you ask one back? Are the kids soviets now? Another example, on FML there are 33 pages of the kids section. Yes, we hate kids. It’s true that they’re cute, sometimes, but not today. That’s what our today’s artist, Ronnie , is going to prove. Ronnie , 17, isn’t old enough yet to have kids. Lucky her. Plus, she’s living in Southern California, nobody would raise kids over there, unless if the kids are mangoes. Anyway, Ronnie is still in College. She does little art projects, murals and the occasional babysitting gig, but for the most part she’s experiencing the wonderfully painful world of trying to find a job in a rundown economy with little to no experience. She’s a nerdy, competitive student who likes to be the best in every single class. (Yeah, she’s that sort of person). She’s currently a Visual and Performing Arts major in the CSU system, but she’s planning on transferring to a private art school that specializes in animation once she figure out how to pay for it. The best part of being unemployed is… nothing. She admits being bored quite often, but then she checks out FML and she feels much better. W promise we didn’t make that up. Ronnie ‘s goal is to work for Pixar as an animator or a storyboard artist… anything really, she loves Pixar so much she would be happy just making coffee for all the Pixar Team. They continue to bring their A-Game with every movie, and it’s been her dream to work with them ever since she was 10. Come on! That has got to be one of the most interesting jobs ever. Now, Ronnie is planning on making a web comic with one of her outrageously talented friends in the near future. Her friend has all these crazy ideas and has written novels which are hundreds of pages long, and she wants Ronnie to bring one of them to life in internet-form. She’s stoked. You should be, too. She’s also working on a children’s book. One of her friends managed to make and publish one, and she realized that she should attempt to do the same. Along with art, music is a passion of hers. She once asked her art teacher if she thought she’d ever make it, and she told her she would be famous for music, rather than art. She was in a badly-named band as the lead vocalist/guitarist/bassist/drummer (they often spontaneously switched instruments just for the hell of it). She can also plays the ukulele, and she’s learning the piano now. Oh, she’s a singer too; she’s currently up for callbacks in her school’s musical for the lead role. Glee style. “-Time to take a nap darling, but first, why did you choose this FML? -I was having no luck with the one I thought I would originally use, so I kept clicking random until I found this one. I couldn’t help but picture a pathetic-looking kid with freckles, and then I knew I had my picture. -Why did you decided to send an illustration for FML? -Because I’m a competitive pain in the ass and I one day I clicked the illustrated FML and thought “Hey, I could do that. Okay, so I ignored this thing for most of last semester. I was swamped with writing work in my classes last semester, so hopefully things are better now. This next semester will be my last one (Yay!), and then I can graduate with my Bachelor’s in Journalism/Professional Writing. This last semester, while fairly tough, was probably the best semester I have had for learning since I started school. I took a class on sustainable communities that was invaluable to my understanding of city planning and building the future. For it, I created a presentation on Bill Mollison, the father of permaculture, and learned more about permaculture than before. I have become taken with this concept and I am using my winter break to learn more about how to live this lifestyle. Bill Mollison is from Tazmania, Australia, and operates from there. Tazmania is full of lush rainforest and many endagered species of plants and animals. The structure of a rainforest and how it grows and cultivates crops is the guiding principle behind much of permaculture. It is a form of agriculture that is more sustainable and more diverse, for those of you unaware. It includes growing many diverse crops instead of monocultures, using feedback loops to create healthy soil, plants, water, and habitats, and reusing everything several times before it becomes waste. It is much more complicated than I have space to get into on my blog, but I suggest researching Bill Mollison on your own. I was very excited to begin reading a book that my friend Andrea got for me called Urban Homesteaders , which covers many of the principles and practices of permaculture also. I will review that book when I finish reading it. Another project I worked on last semester was designing my own sustainable community. While I had fun and turned in an interesting concept, it really got me to thinking. My concept was for a city of 200,000. It involved 80% open space, and 20% building. I designed this by creating towers that held markets, vertical gardens, and apartment-like adaptable buildings. While that sounds great in theory, I started thinking about my own dreams as of late. Would I enjoy living there? If not, what will draw other Americans? I have to admit that part of me has been infected with the very American dream of buying a piece of land and building a house on it. I want to grow my own organic farm, and have goats and chickens. Living out in the country right now, I have noticed a saddening trend, as the city encroaches on us, more and more of the big farms out here are being sold to developers. 2,000+ sq. ft. monstrosities are being built in cookie-cutter form to create housing communities everywhere. It’s turning into the suburbs everywhere, and there’s no stopping it. As much as I dream about buying land and starting a farm, I wouldn’t want to look out and see that scab of humanity next door to my beautiful gardens. But with a growing population of American Dreamers wanting their big house, big cars, and yards (not gardens), how many of these will we install before we realize we have destroyed everything beautiful that we have? So would I live in a community that was similar to apartments? Yes, because in my design, there were garden plots for everyone to work in, public transit out of the town, and a wildlife area that took up 50% of the total land and allowed for hunting and camping. It is an idea I plan to keep tweaking until I get it right.
