Camille A. Brown Is The First Black Woman Choreographer Nominated For A Tony Award In Over 20 Years

Link:

T his year’s Tony Awards could turn out to be a historic evening for Black women in the realm of dance. According to Forbes , choreographer and artistic director Camille A. Brown is the first Black woman to be nominated in the Best Choreography category in 23 years. #ICYMI this piece about @CamilleABrown #dance #choreographers https://t.co/AZnPkrZzVK — Dance/USA (@DanceUSAorg) June 7, 2019 Brown—who is the founder of the New York City-based Camille A. Brown & Dancers dance company—is nominated for her work on the play Choir Boy . The play, which was written by Tarell Alvin McCraney , chronicles the experiences of a Black student who leads a gospel choir. Brown intertwined the storyline with powerful forms of dance expression. She says the premise of the play prompted her to pull inspiration from South African dance traditions, Step dance routines, and Juba dance which was started by Africans who were enslaved. “When I was hearing the spirituals [in Choir Boy] I was thinking about the historical context of them because they’re over 200 years old, but then looking at the men [in the cast] and how they are walking in life in 2019,” she told Deadline in an interview. “I told them that this was a time for them to be unapologetic on stage, and to step into what all this means. I told them, you’re carrying this historical information but you’re also carrying who you are. It’s not just about me coming in and putting in steps – there has to be the need and intention, an urgency, this combination of working and moving our bodies in space and having a dialogue.” The award-winning choreographer has had a storied career in the dance industry. She attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts and went on to dance with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Brown’s dance company has performed internationally and she has led the choreography for shows that include Once on This Island and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert! . Brown says being nominated for the Tony Award is meaningful and speaks volumes about the need for more representation in dance and theatre. “When I wanted to do theatre, I didn’t see many reflections of myself. This Tony nomination is so important to me, and has deep meaning, because the last black woman that was nominated in this category was Marlies Yearby in 1996, for Rent ,” she said. “I have I hope that a young black girl who wants to choreograph for theater but doesn’t necessarily see many black females can see a reflection of herself through me.” The 73rd Tony Awards will air on June 9. Mo Meatless Money: Jay-Z Invests $1 Million Into A Black-Owned Vegan Cookie Company

Source: WENN.com / WENN Jay-Z’s Latest Investment Is A Vegan Cookie Company The news of Jay-Z  officially becoming a billionaire is still fresh in everyone’s mind, and just like always, the rap mogul is already on to the next one as he continues to expand his business portfolio. The rapper’s venture capital firm Marcy Venture Partners led a $1 million seed funding round with a company that specializes in making vegan cookies. The company, Partake Foods, is a Black-owned start-up that makes health-conscious food products and specializes in producing food items that are free of the United State’s top eight allergens. According to reports, other notable investors in Partake Foods’ first major round of funding include The Factory, Backstage Capital, SoFi Venture, and Chuck Muth. This latest investment is not the first time Shawn Carter has backed a plant-based company. The Brooklyn native recently invested in Impossible Foods’ fifth equity funding round along with a slew of other celebrities. The company, known for its meatless hamburger patty, raised a total of $300 million. Jay isn’t new to this whole vegan thing, either. Along with his wife, Beyoncé, Hov co-owns 22 Days Nutrition, a company designed to encourage others to commit to a 22-day vegan challenge. The couple, who primarily eats mostly plant-based, have been vocal enthusiasts of the vegan lifestyle, with Bey publicly adapting a strict plant-based diet to prepare for her iconic Coachella performance in 2018. As for Partake Foods, the company was founded back in 2016 by former Coca-Cola national sales director, Denise Woodard. The decision to start her own company was directly inspired by her daughter developing a severe allergy to several foods. “I couldn’t figure out how to make a gluten-free, corn-free, egg-free cookie, so I went to buy one, but couldn’t find any,” Woodard said to People at the time. The cookies that they make are completely vegan and are free of peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, soy, gluten, fish and shellfish, as well as are non-GMO, free of artificial flavors, and free of preservatives. Partake Foods can be found in over 300 stores and are expected to more than triple that number by the end of the year.

Dirty Pool: Public Swimming Closings In Louisville Put Black Children At Significantly Higher Risk Of Drowning

Source: Afton Almaraz / Getty Pool Closing In Louisville Leaves Black Children At Risk Of Drowning Black people not knowing how to swim is an ugly racial stereotype, but sadly, it is also a reality for many African-American children who live in Louisville, Kentucky. According to the Courier-Journal , the city has decided to close four of the city’s public swimming pools including the only pool on the city’s West End aka “the Black side of town”. Not only does that ruin some of the summer fun for the kids, but it also puts them at SERIOUS risk in the future… According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10 people die every day from accidental drowning. If you are a black child, you are 5.5 times more likely to drown than white children. The disparity is greatest among kids ages 11-12. All of this because Lousiville is facing budget cuts and the first thing to go when politicians decide to save money are programs that help minorities and poor people. ‘Merica. SMFH.

A Lil Positivity: Michael B. Jordan Presents The Central Park Five With Inaugural Roger Baldwin Courage Award

Source: John Lamparski / Getty The Central Park Five Receive The Roger Baldwin Courage Award Michael B. Jordan praised The Central Park Five — Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise — for their perseverance and courage during a luncheon in which the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California honored Netflix’s series about their case. The actor told the men on Friday that he cannot watch footage of the new series When They See Us without getting emotional and feeling like as a young black man he too could have faced a similar ordeal. “It’s dangerous in America when you’re living in a black body,” Jordan said. “The whole time that these men were incarcerated, they never changed their story. They insisted of their innocence even as they did their time.” Yusef Salaam shed a couple tears as he accepted an award on behalf of the series creator, Ava DuVernay. “I’m not ashamed to cry in front of you,” Salaam said after a moment of silence as he reflected on the fact that he and the other men were “just boys” when they were wrongfully convicted. “Our story is a story of an egregious miscarriage of justice.” Salaam and the rest of the Central Park Five were exonerated back in 2002 after being charged with the 1989 rape of a woman in New York’s Central Park. They received a standing ovation as they accepted the ACLU chapter’s inaugural Roger Baldwin Courage Award; Baldwin was one of the ACLU’s founders and its first executive director. Though this story and the outrage surrounding it is anything but new, DuVernay’s series has re-ignited a public outcry over how the case was handled. Shortly before the men accepted their award, Linda Fairstein–the Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor who observed the teenagers’ interrogation–was dropped by her book publisher in the face of the increasing criticism.
