‘The Color Purple’ Actress Sues Show After Being Fired For Old Homophobic Post

View post:

Source: Mondadori Portfolio / Getty Actress Oluwaseyi “Seyi” Omooba was cut from the U.K. production of The Color Purple because of past homophobic comments and now she’s clapping back with a lawsuit. According to Pink News , Omooba was supposed to play the lead role of Celie who, ironically, has a queer relationship in the story. Yet, Omooba still chose to be homophobic, building off a 2014 Facebook post where she cited religion for her beliefs. Hamilton star Aaron Lee Lambert pulled up the old post, which partly read: “I do not believe you can be born gay, and I do not believe homosexuality is right, though the laws of this land has made it legal doesn’t mean its [sic] right. I do believe that everyone sins and falls into temptation but its [sic] by the asking of forgiveness, repentance and the grace of God that we overcome and live how God ordained us too [sic].” In his tweet of the post, Lambert asked Omooba, “Do you still stand by this post? Or are you happy to remain a hypocrite? Seeing as you’ve now been announced to be playing an LGBTQ character, I think you owe your LGBTQ peers an explanation. Immediately.” Omooba was advised by Leicester’s Curve Theatre and her agency, Michael Garrett Associates, to retract her post and to apologize. However, she refused to do this, citing her Christian faith as an excuse. “ I really wanted the role but what they wanted me to do was completely against my faith. I did not want to lie just to keep a job,”  she told  The Daily Mail. “I just quoted what the Bible says about homosexuality, the need for repentance, but ultimately God’s love for all humanity.” Omooba insisted that she’s not homophobic. “I stand by what I wrote, but had I known that it would have come to this, I would have set my account to the privacy mode.” Riiiight. Like that would’ve helped. Since her statements were brought to light, she was let go from The Color Purple production, and she was dropped by her agents. Omooba says when she tried to reach out to agents who were once eager to sign her, only one responded, acknowledging that she was ‘talented but misguided’ and brainwashed by her religion. “I’m heartbroken,” Omooba said. “If I’m unable to get back to the stage, then I feel there is no point. It’s the only thing I have ever wanted since I was a young girl.” Omooba has now filed a lawsuit against Michael Garrett Associates for religious discrimination. The group hasn’t commented on Omooba’s lawsuit, but the Curve Theatre told The Daily Mail , “The comments made by Seyi have caused significant and widely expressed concerns both on social media and in the wider press. Following careful reflection, it has been decided Seyi will no longer be involved with the production.” Guess we’ll have to wait and find out if Omooba will have any weight in court. Until then, she might want to just get started on that church production of A Color Purple . Surely, it’ll be an entirely different musical with some of the most important themes lost.

The 6th Grader That Claimed White Students Cut Off Her Dreads Admits To Making It Up

A 12-year-old Virginia girl that accused her white classmates of holding her down and cutting out some of her dreads has admitted that she made the story up. The Immanuel Christian School is the same private school in Virginia where the vice president’s wife was a part-time teacher, the New York Times noted . According to NBC 4 Washington , Amira Allen’s parents have apologized for their daughter’s behavior, adding that she will also be seeking counseling. “To those young boys and their parents, we sincerely apologize for the pain and anxiety these allegations have caused,” the family said in a statement, adding, “To the administrators and families of Immanuel Christian School, we are sorry for the damage this incident has done to trust within the school family and the undue scorn it has brought to the school.” Last week the story made headlines when Allen said that she was ambushed by her white classmates her on the playground last week and used scissors to cut off some of her dreadlocks while calling her “nappy” and “ugly.” “They kept laughing and calling me names,” Amari told  CBS affiliate WUSA-TV , tearing up. “They called me ‘ugly,’ said, ‘I shouldn’t have been born.’ They called me ‘an attention-seeker.’” Camera footage retrieved showed that the accused were somewhere else during the time of the alleged attack. However, the Allen family lawyer still maintains that the girl isn’t lying about being bullied. Stephen Danish, the head of the school told Essence that they plan on using this incident as a lesson in healing. “We’re grateful to the Fairfax County Police Department for their diligent work to investigate these allegations,” Danish said in the statement. “While we are relieved to hear the truth and bring the events of the past few days to a close, we also feel tremendous pain for the victims and the hurt on both sides of this conflict. We recognize that we now enter what will be a long season of healing.” “This ordeal has revealed that we as a school family are not immune from the effects of deep racial wounds in our society. We view this incident as an opportunity to be part of a learning and healing process, and we will continue to support the students and families involved,” the statement added. It’s unclear what Allen’s punishment, if any, will be. Freddie Gibbs Gets A Restraining Order Following The Mother Of His Son Allegedly Vandalizing His Car

Source: Cassidy Sparrow / Getty Freddie Gibbs Gets A Restraining Order Against His Son’s Mother Freddie Gibbs is going through a pretty intense breakup right now. According to documents obtained by TMZ , the Gary, Indiana native claims that Raven Tatum–the mother of his son–has been harassing him and his new girlfriend since August. Things ended up getting so tense that Tatum allegedly vandalized the rapper’s Mercedes-Benz with a knife. This downward spiral all began when Gibbs allowed his baby mama to stay at his home because her house was flooded. While he was out of town, Freddie noticed on the baby monitor that Tatum had moved boxes of her belongings into their son’s room. This made him angry, so he instructed the house sitter to tell him ex to put her boxes in the garage instead. That’s when things went left. The rapper alleges that Tatum was so upset by having to put her things in the garage that she went and vandalized his car. According to Gibbs, she etched “F*** you” into the paint with a knife and then proceeded to slash his tires. But that was only the beginning. Freddie goes on to claim that Tatum got ahold of his new girlfriend’s contact information and proceeded to harass her with calls and text messages claiming that Gibbs was cheating on her. This is when Freddie decided to take things to court, where he requested that a restraining order be put on the mother of his child. The judge obliged, and now, Tatum is forced to stay 100 yards away from Freddie, his girlfriend, and his daughter from a previous relationship. He’s also sought custody of the son he shares with Tatum, but the judge ended up denying that request. Both parties are scheduled to appear in court next month where the judge will further evaluate the situation/incident.

SMH: Lil Wayne Ordered To Pay $150K After Failing To Respond To Concert Lawsuit

Source: Scott Legato / Getty Lil Wayne Ordered To Pay $150,000 In Concert Lawsuit Lately, Lil Wayne’s  concerts have been a pretty touchy subject. This negative trend is continuing according to reports from TMZ that the rapper has been ordered to pay $150,000 for allegedly orchestrating a fake concert that was promoted under his name. According to court documents obtained by the publication, Wayne was being sued by Ramin Natan for both breach of contract and fraud. The judge ruled in favor of Natan in a default settlement, because Wayne didn’t ever bother tending to the lawsuit. Now, the New Orleans rapper has to pay Natan a smooth $150K in damages. This news comes after Natan first filed this lawsuit back in January. According to the client and his lawyers, Lil Wayne and the Migos are “Ponzi scheme artists” that book shows that they never truly intended on performing at in the first place. Natan says that he gave Eric Stenger $500,000 to promote a Lil Wayne concert, even though Stenger was never a concert promoter at all. Natan feels like Stenger knew Lil Wayne and gave the rapper the $500,000 to perform, but he never showed up. Weezy was served with the lawsuit papers months ago and never responded to Natan’s claims. As a result, the judge ruled in the plaintiff’s favor. In most cases, the judge will give the defendant another chance to respond to being served before the verdict is finalized–but it’s unclear if Lil Wayne is going to move forward with the process or just shell out the $150,000. Hopefully concerts stop being such a negative for Wayne (and his fans) sometime soon.
