The rest is here:

B lack women are making historic moves in medicine. According to Atlanta Daily World Patrice A. Harris, M.D., M.A. , was sworn in as president of the American Medical Association; making her the first African American woman to be at the helm of the country’s largest collective of physicians and medical students. For the first time in its history the American Medical Association has a Black woman as president! https://t.co/mdvJbXoA2e — #becauseofthemwecan (@Becauseofthem) June 13, 2019 The inauguration ceremony took place in Chicago on Tuesday. During her inaugural speech, Dr. Harris highlighted the issues that she intends to address as she starts her new role. Amongst the things on her agenda are implementing effective strategies to improve healthcare education and training, combating the crisis surrounding chronic diseases, and eliminating barriers to quality patient care. Dr. Harris also hopes to push the conversations about mental health and diversity in the medical field forward. “We face big challenges in health care today, and the decisions we make now will move us forward in a future we help create,” she said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “We are no longer at a place where we can tolerate the disparities that plague communities of color, women, and the LGBTQ community. But we are not yet at a place where health equity is achieved e in those communities. I hope to be tangible evidence for young girls and young boys and girls from communities of color that you can aspire to be a physician. Not only that, you can aspire to be a leader in organized medicine.” Dr. Harris—who has served as an AMA board secretary and AMA board chair—has had a storied medical career thus far. Prior to being appointed to become president of the American Medical Association, she served as the chief health officer of Fulton County, Georgia and has worked with several healthcare organizations to advance their services. She also served as an adjunct professor in Emory University’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Several Black doctors are breaking barriers in the medical field. A group of African American medical professionals recently opened the first Black-owned urgent care center on the South Side of Chicago. T he contributions of mathematicians Mary Jackson , Katherine Johnson , and Dorothy Vaughan will forever be embedded in the fabric of American history. The three women were honored by NASA for pushing space exploration forward. According to NPR , the agency renamed the street in front of its headquarters to celebrate the legacies of the women. NASA has renamed the street in front of its headquarters “Hidden Figures Way” — a tribute to the legacy of black women who played a major role in the space race. https://t.co/KNqBbufynN — NPR (@NPR) June 14, 2019 The proposal for “Hidden Figures Way” was introduced by a group of senators last year. On Wednesday, the loved ones of the women, author Margot Lee Shetterly —who wrote the book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race —politicians, and supporters watched as the plan came to fruition during a street unveiling ceremony. “Naming this street Hidden Figures Way serves to remind us, and everyone who comes here, of the standard that was set by these women, with their commitment to science and their embodiment of the values of equality, justice and humanity,” said Shetterly during the ceremony. “But, let it also remind us of the Hidden Figures way, which is to open our eyes to [contributions] of the people around us so that their names, too, are the ones that we remember at the end of the story.” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine says that the recognition of their accomplishments is far overdue. “Here we are, 50 years after the landing of the Apollo 11 moon lander, celebrating those figures who were, at the time, not celebrated.” The three pioneers who broke barriers for African Americans in the space industry have received several honors and accolades. In 2017, NASA named a new space facility after Katherine Johnson. Lego also released a toy set inspired by the women to not only honor their accomplishments but to expose young children of color to career paths in the realm of STEM. Tami Roman is finally getting the spin-off show she’s been talking about for years, and a whole lot more. It was announced this week by Deadline that the 49-year-old reality star and actress has signed an overall deal with Mona Scott-Young and her Monami Productions, which is behind the Love and Hip Hop  franchises, to develop and produce both scripted and “alternative” content. It premieres Wednesday, June 19 at 9 p.m. after the premiere of Season 8 of Basketball Wives,  which Tami is also on. The special will follow Tami, longtime love and now husband Reggie Youngblood, and the blending of her daughters and his family from Houston. It will also take us through Reggie’s efforts to get Tami to marry him. SEE ALSO:  Surprise! Both women are committed to putting the spotlight on Houston, where Tami and her family mainly reside. Mona is very excited about this partnership, telling Deadline , “Tami is a true multi-hyphenate; not only is she a talent on camera, she’s also an incredibly intuitive and creative producer. I love working with smart, dynamic women and Tami Roman is a rock star!” TAMI EVER AFTER premieres WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19TH on @VH1 read full story by @NineDaves on @people https://t.co/pp3sUQgaiz pic.twitter.com/MddDmPmn0e — IG: @TamiRoman (@TamiRoman) June 14, 2019 As for Roman, the  Bonnet Chronicles  and  Saints and Sinners  star is grateful to Mona for providing her with yet another opportunity to allow her career to flourish. “I’m so excited about the magic that Mona and I are creating,” she told the publication. “She has always been very supportive of my career and ideas and I’m happy to be a part of her company. This will be an incredible journey.” Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). This is certainly a dream come true for Tami, who said in 2018 that she was ready to do her own thing outside of  Basketball Wives  because people were getting the wrong impression of her based on her time on the show. “I’ve been a part of the Basketball Wives franchise since 2010 — and it hasn’t been for lack of trying to have my own situation, because we tried several times,” she said at the time. “But I do also think it’s just a matter of timing. They say, ‘If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans,’ and I think you have to do things when it’s ordered by Him — not to get too spiritual. But I feel like it’s the right time for this moment to happen, because people have seen me one way on Basketball Wives  for so long and eventually that takes its toll on public perception of you.” SEE ALSO:  Tami Roman Details Being Kidnapped, Held Hostage And Sexually Abused [VIDEO] She will finally get the chance to show fans a different side of her, and as she told PEOPLE this week, she’s looking forward to it. “I’m truly excited that my fans will finally get an opportunity to see my crazy family dynamic with my children —  Lyric, Jazz  —  and my boyfriend Reggie,” she said. “It feels good that I have the opportunity to do something a little different in the reality TV space.” Sign Up For Our Newsletter!
