Source: FOX / Getty Tonight’s episode of Empire is the episode that gives us a smidgen of hope right before the rug gets metaphorically snatched from under our feet. The episode begins with Cookie and Lucious at Terri’s church. They’re praying for Andre who has been undergoing cancer treatment for 6 weeks at this point, and the preacher says something interesting. He tells his flock to make peace with friends and foes and to get their lives in order so god will work in their favor. That seems to have struck a chord with Lucious. He thinks he has to make peace with Kingsley in order to save Andre. Meanwhile, Cookie entertains the possibility that Andre might die and Lucious doesn’t want to hear it. He doesn’t want her speaking negatively over their son. This makes Cookie feel like she can’t talk to him, so she goes right to Damon Cross’ house. Damon gives her what she needs—an ear. He knows exactly what to say to her because his daughter had cancer too. We can assume by his tone that his daughter is dead but at the same time, we still don’t quite know what happened to her. In other news, Cookie feels guilty about their friendship, as she should, because this is technically emotional cheating. The FBI agents convince Kingsley to wear a wire to set up Lucious. Hold that thought, but speaking of Kingsley, Lucious actually visits his mom, Tracy, to try to reconcile his past. He mentions that he wants a relationship with Kingsley. Tracy is hostile toward him at first but Lucious reminds her that she never told him about Kingsley in the first place. Then she goes on rambling about how she used to fantasize about them getting married and you realize just how gone she is. Lucious brings her back to the point tough and she says it’s going to have to be Kingsley’s decision no matter what, but she’ll talk to him. Next, we find Lucious and Thirsty kicking it. Kingsley interrupts, wanting to talk to Lucious in private. Thirsty exits and the conversation begins. Kingsley congratulates him on pulling empire back from the impossible then tries to finesse Lucious, but in an obvious way. He asks him where he got the money from and brings up overseas accounts. It’s super obvious. Lucious ain’t dumb and doesn’t answer his question. He does, however, ask Kingsley if his mom told him to come see him. Kingsley says that he’s there on his own and that his mom had nothing to do with it. That’s when Lucious really peeps game and cuts their time short. Later on, Kingsley visits his mom and she tells him about Lucious coming to visit. Then she starts talking about how Lucious did crack with her, but we all know Lucious never actually did drugs, just sold them. Lucious had actually just told Kingsley that he never did drugs during their visit. Then Tracy tells Kingsley that Lucious said he’d beat the baby out of her when she told him she was pregnant. Another lie. Even Kingsley doesn’t trust this. He doesn’t push back too much against his mother’s lies, but he does seem to be conflicted. The doctor tells Andre and family that his body has been responding well to treatment and there’s a chance that he could be cancer-free by the next treatment. Cookie goes to tell Damon the good news about Andre’s treatment and they toast to Andre’s health amid all this sexual tension. Then Cookie has a moment where she says she shouldn’t be there, packs her stuff up and apologizes for sending mixed signals. Then Damon says they both know he can give her what Lucious can’t and she swiftly dips out of there after telling him their thing is over. Kingsley heads back to Lucious and says he needs to know the real story about how he and Tracy met and if it’s true that Lucious got his mom hooked on crack. Lucious said when he first met Tracy she asked if she could try his stuff against every warning he gave her not to, but she did anyway and things obviously didn’t end well. He admits to selling her drugs but said he felt, in some weird way, that he was protecting her by giving her his drugs because maybe his stuff was clean compared to other people who might lace their products. Gee, thanks. Anyway, then Kingsley asks if he really threatened to beat kill him when his mom was pregnant with him. Lucious denies this. We know that Lucious can be evil, but family is everything to him. He explains to Kingsley that he would never have let Tracy raise him had he known he even existed. Kingsley said his mom told him he didn’t want him but Lucious says that that’s the furthest thing from the truth. Then Kingsley starts tearing up and shows him the wire, which actually looks like a Fitbit. Lucious takes it off, puts it in Kingsley’s hand, tears up, and tells him that his mom robbed him of the opportunity to be his father but he still wants to be there for him. He still wants that father/son relationship. They hug and it’s all mushy and tear-jerky and what not. But let’s not get too excited because someone’s big death day is coming and the feds are still lurking so things are going to go downhill soon. Kingsley tells the agent he’s done. She tries to intimidate him into continuing but Kingsley tells her that he’s not sure if he’s a Lyon, but he’s definitely not a rat. The agent threatens to come after all of them. Later on, Lucious brings Kingsley to dinner with the family. They’re all looking at him like But Lucious says he wants to properly introduce Kingsley to the family because Kingsley is his son and they need space to work on that bond. Kingsley apologizes and says he understands it may take a while to make things right but he will try. Lucious reminds them that he has had to make amends with everyone at the table as well, so this isn’t much different. Cookie is annoyed, but she’s willing to allow this because she’s just happy about Andre’s news. Finally, the episode wraps with the feds raiding Empire’s tour equipment after a show. Becky confronts them and they tell her that Lucious has been using the tour to move narcotics across the country and that the tour is over. However, we’re all like, come again? It can’t be Lucious smuggling drugs, can he? No! He’s too busy building Empire back up. He left that life decades ago! So who is it? From Newsweek : Britney’s Gram Podcast hosts Barbara Grey and Tess Barker claimed Spears’s conservatorship, money and health, could be reasons why Spears was checked into a facility without her approval. Legally, it’s a possibility that Spears’s father, Jamie Spears, has ordered his daughter to get help even if she wasn’t initially receptive. Spears has been legally confined to a conservatorship since 2008, though she has tried to fight it, and was found mentally unfit to hire a lawyer, according to Britney’s Gram podcast. The voicemail from the anonymous person claimed Spears was not taking her medication, which caused her father to pull his support from her Domination Las Vegas residency. The show was canceled in the first week of January, Spears announcing she was heartbroken but had to take time for her father’s deteriorating health. Spears seemingly broke another giant rule: she’s not allowed to drive a car under her conservatorship, but was seen driving with boyfriend Sam Asghari. The unnamed caller claimed he had quit Britney’s team two weeks prior, and his identity was said to be confirmed by Grey and Barker. If you don’t know what a conservatorship is, it’s a guardian appointed by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of a person may be mentally or physically ill or of old age. A #FreeBritney hashtag is now trending on Twitter. But, Spears and team, Sam Asghari, Jamie Lynn Spears and Kevin Federline have not confirmed any of the claims made by the Britney’s Gram podcast. When Beyoncé dropped “Formation” back in 2016 , I knew that something about her had changed. Or maybe it didn’t. Perhaps that “newly perceived” pro-Blackness had always been there, she just wasn’t “allowed” to show it to the world. There’s a moment in the new Netflix documentary ‘Homecoming’ that may reference that time, when she may have not felt free or empowered to speak her truth as an artist. “As a Black woman, I used to feel like the world wanted me to stay in my little box. And Black women often feel underestimated,” she says. Well, if anything is clear, it’s that Queen Bey is emancipated from the restraints that were once placed on her. Gone are the days of her being safe and appeasing her white fans, the same fans that could easily consume her R&B music in one breath and deny her Blackness in another. Because regardless of Coachella’s overwhelming whiteness and Bey being the first Black woman to headline the concert series, her Blackety Blackness and the aesthetic and power associated with HBCUs were front and center. And like everything she does at this stage of her career, that too was intentional. “Instead of me pulling out my flower crown. It was important that I brought our culture to Coachella,” Beyoncé stressed, adding, “Creating something that will live beyond me, that will make people feel open and like they’re watching magic.” See, on that stage, Beyoncé was home, reliving the old days when her young “country ass” would watch the “battle of the bands” and how she once yearned to graduate from an HBCU like her father. You know, before her other passions took her in a different direction. However now, at the age of 37, it feels as if she’s come back home to herself, all while paving a new path, crafting a different narrative and meaning. Not just in her music, but in the world. I’d say that if “Formation” was the inciting incident and “Lemonade” was the rising action, #Beychella is the beautiful and unapologetic climax of this amazing story. And for those wondering why revisiting “Homecoming” is so necessary, the answer is simple. Beyoncé didn’t just do this for herself or for Blue. She did this for the culture. She did this for us. The two-hour and seventeen minute “Homecoming” digs deeper than what we giddily streamed on YouTube in the wee hours of the morning last year. It gives us behind the scene footage of the tireless work and intense planning that went into this cultural masterpiece. Who knew that one performance translated into eight grueling months of planning and rehearsals. Not to mention, all the precious time Bey took away from mothering, bonding and breastfeeding her baby twins, Rumi and Sir . But that was the sacrifice she was willing to make in order to give Black folks some much-needed joy. When you see just how persistent Bey was in “building things from the ground up,” we see how this joyful perfection was constructed. Not only did she handpick every dancer herself, she “picked every light, the fabric of the steps, the height of the pyramid, the shape of the pyramid,” reminding us that every “tiny detail had an intention.” No wonder she described herself as “super specific,” but you have to be when you have a vision this grand. While we see Bey be the creative beast we’ve always known her to be, we also get glimpses of her being a mere mortal like the rest of us. In one scene, which I’m glad didn’t get edited out; she’s expressing her frustration to a room of lot of men about how her notes for the show were not being applied, repeatedly. Remember: Bey may be a bawse and the one signing the checks, but she’s also a #BlackWomanAtWork, which can also mean being overlooked and ignored. In addition, throughout the film she speaks openly and freely about the toll her “unexpected” pregnancy took on her body and the journey it took for her to get to a place where she could perform, and perform to her expected incredibly high standard. “My body went through more than I knew it could. I was 218 pounds the day I gave birth,” she confides, adding, “I had an extremely difficult pregnancy. I had high blood pressure. I developed toxemia, preeclampsia.” Fearing for the life of one of her twins she had an emergency C-section, only months later finding herself on that soundstage, pushing herself further than she’d ever done. In one scene, we see her like we’ve never seen the seasoned performer before: Curled up on the floor, clutching at some spasming muscles in her belly, looking defeated. Yet, somehow, she dug deep and persisted. But the most transformative takeaways from “Homecoming” aren’t just Beyoncé’s physical journey, her incredible work ethic or her overall greatness. It’s that her show was a celebration of every last Black body on stage and every last Black body that consumed the performance. An act I would argue is overtly political, especially when you think about how often our bodies are overpolicied and scrutinized by the state and beyond. To be great, and see that greatness reflected in you and the institutions and the legacies you hold dear is powerful and affirming. Not to mention, liberating. “It was important for me that everyone that had never seen themselves represented felt like they were on that stage with us,” Bey explained. Adding, “Rejoice in the imperfections and the wrongs that are so damn right. I wanted everyone to feel thankful for their curves, their sass, their honesty – thankful for their freedom.” See, for her, the stage was this utopia, a space with “no rules,” where “none of us were marginalized.” A place where Black folks, our rich history and our divine excellence weren’t perceived as a threat or a problem. Instead, that glorious shine was welcomed with open arms. And that right there is what home is supposed to feel like, an unconditional love, a profound sense of safety and utter familiarity. And if it doesn’t feel that way, Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” reminds us that we have the agency and the will to create our own homes, wherever we damn well choose and in our own flawless Black image. The Christian Post is reporting that Jaddeus Dempsey of Impact City Church in Ohio allowed children in an after school program to hit, spit and even cut him with a steak knife to share a message.
