HB’s 2019 Hustler’s List: Brittney Kelley’s Passion For Fashion & Makeup Began With Her Mother

Source: Claudia Hershner / Claudia Hershner HB’s 2019 Hustler’s List highlights Black women across the beauty, entertainment and marketing fields. These women are blazing paths in their respective lanes while embodying the definition of a true hustler. CEO Brittney Kelley is the definition of what it looks like to do it all, while looking good. The mommy of two is killing it as the CEO of her own makeup line, that offers lipsticks, lip liner and handbags carrying her own namesake. She is also the wife of Major League Baseball player, Josh Harrison. Balancing both family life and business accolades is no easy feat, but she does it with the grace of a pro. We caught up with Kelley about how she maintains her professional and personal endeavors, and advice she has for other women looking to start their own companies. HB: Describe how your passion for fashion and makeup began… Brittney Kelley: It began at an early age. I would sit at home and watch my mom get glammed up. I loved to play in her makeup and clothes. As a young girl, I would sit on the couch during award season and sketch all the beautiful dresses on a sketch pad as the celebrities would walk down the red carpet. It was so cool to me. HB: How did you decide to launch a line? Brittney Kelley: When I was in college at the University of Cincinnati, I created a fashion show that provided African American designers and models an opportunity to showcase their work. I was a business student and knew I wanted to showcase my styling efforts. At the time, there was nowhere for me to show it. I wasn’t a design student in college, so I couldn’t showcase them through the design program. Through my shows and research, I started to notice that there were not many African American Handbag Designers. I loved handbags, so I decided to launch my own line. From there, I launched a beauty & lifestyle brand of lipsticks to showcase bold colors for the everyday woman. There are so many beauty and lifestyle brands that focus on what the fashion industry considers beauty, I wanted to create a line that showcased a chic style for any woman (even moms). I wanted to let all women know, that “You can be your own kind of beautiful” by illustrating bold and bright colors for women of all skin tones and backgrounds. HB: What obstacles did you face in launching your line and how did you overcome them? Brittney Kelley: Because I was so young when I first started out and was working with a minimal budget, I faced the challenge of manufacturing. It took a while to find a good manufacturer that was willing to produce small quantities of my products. I never gave up and just kept contacting companies, until I found someone that could produce my items. HB: What would you say to naysayers who feel the makeup industry is “too saturated” with product offerings? Brittney Kelley: I would say that the economic base in the beauty industry is very large. “There’s a piece of the pie for everyone” you just have to find your niche! HB: How do you balance being an entrepreneur/wife/mother? Brittney Kelley: I make sure that I set aside time for everyone. As an entrepreneur, it is very easy to get caught up in your work. There can be nights where you can be up until 3am or 4am doing work. I try to create a work life balance. I am a wife and mother first. So that means if I have to spend a good part of the day with my family and then spend all night finishing up work, that’s just what I will do! My family is the most important thing to me. It’s truly a balancing act! Sometimes, I don’t even know how I do it!! HB: Who is your womenpreneur inspiration and why? Brittney Kelley: My womenpreneur inspiration is “Karen Civil”. She’s a great example of a woman that exudes self-confidence, women empowerment and not letting anyone deter you from your dreams! That is something that is so hard to come by in a society where people are constantly trying to drag you down. HB: What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Brittney Kelley: “Don’t worry about anything, instead pray about everything.” I say this, because as entrepreneur’s we are constantly worried about everything. It’s just in our nature. You want everything to be perfect. We are perfectionist!  Whether its worrying about who will like your product, if your product will sell or are you giving off the right image. All off these things can take over our minds. So, this is something that was said to me and I try to stand true to it. HB: What advice would you give to other women looking to start their own businesses? Brittney Kelley: Just do it! Ask god what he wants you to do and do it! HB: Did you ever doubt your ability to “do it all?” Why or why not? Brittney Kelley: Yes, there are many times that I doubted myself. You will always have naysayers, that say  “O there are thousands of lipstick companies”  or  “everyone has a lipstick line”. I had to push through. My husband and my family are my biggest supporters and they never let me stop believing in myself. I pray every night and still do, for god to continue to lead me on the path that he wants me to be on. I would say that he’s leading my life in his direction. Yass MiMi: 8 Times Mariah Carey’s Hood Side Showed It’s A**

Source: Alexander Tamargo / Getty Mariah Carey has been in the game for over 30 years now and some folks still don’t know that the Queen had a gangster side. “IDC what the anyone says.. MARIAH CAREY IS that hood chick. Rich af, but still hood. I love it”. -@Gallyo To most people’s surprise, the pop diva didn’t grow up with a silver spoon in her her mouth. Back in 2018 MC, whose mother is Irish and father is Black and Afro-Venezuelan, opened up to Pitchfork about her early struggles growing up as an impoverished biracial kid and how it was difficult to fit in. “Somebody once said in the hallway to me at school, ‘Oh, she got three shirts in rotation.’ It was mortifying. But that’s because my mom chose to live in predominantly white neighborhoods, where people had more money than us, and I didn’t fit in there. Or in an all black neighborhood when my parents were together; as a mixed couple, they had problems there. So there was not one safe place.”- Mariah Carey One thing about Mariah is that no matter how Hollywood she got, she always managed to keep it a lil hood. “She invented pop artists collabing with rappers lol fantasy ft ODB. She’s the queen of that. Known, unknown, gangsta rap, commercial.. she don’t care lol.”- @RihJLaw If you don’t acknowledge Mariah as the lovely, gangsta, diva angel that she is,  it just means you’re slacking on your MiMi knowledge.  If you watch very closely, you’ll see when the Hollywood Diva goes from Mariah to Mimi who doesn’t take crap from anyone and knows how to have a simple, good time. Like the time she went to the hood to drink wine and hang out with Dame Dash and Noreaga. Classic: Or when she and Lee Daniels put Wendy Williams in her place:   Hit the flip to see more times Mariah Carey’s inner (confident, unapologetic, laid back, tell-it-like-it-is) hood goddess came out and shut ish down.

Apple The Latest Company To Throw Its Name Into The Video Game World

Continue reading here:

Source: Michael Short / Getty Not lost in the bevy announcements Apple made which included Apple News+, Apple TV+, and a  credit card the company that Jobs built revealed it’s new video game subscription service Apple Arcade. When it launches the service will feature over 100 exclusive titles and a bevy of cool features, but we don’t know exactly how much it will cost you. Apple Arcade’s primary focus is to help gamers discover new games which used to be a task in the App Store because there is just so many to choose from once you start searching. Apple Arcade will give subscribers a new tab to explore the games that would otherwise get buried in the App Store. Part of the money that comes from the subscriptions will help fund the developers who made the games. Once you are subscribed the games will be all-you-can-play meaning outside of the subscription fee, you won’t have to dish out an additional penny for DLC or any other updates. You will also be able to play all titles offline, so if you are always on the go, this is a huge deal. Subscribers can also play the games across Apple’s family of devices which includes, iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple TV and can even pick up exactly where you left off in the game before you switched the device. As far as games are concerned Apple did show a glimpse of a new Sonic game, a reimagined version of the Arcade classic Frogger. Apple has done some heavy recruiting as far as studios are concerned with Annapurna Interactive, Bossa Studios, Cartoon Network, Finji, Giant Squid, Klei Entertainment, Konami, Lego, MIstwalker Corporation, Sega, Snowman, ustwo games, and others helping bring exclusive titles to the service. Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Ken Wong, and Will Wright are all on board to help deliver unique titles out the 100 that are coming when the service launches in this fall. Again no price has been revealed, but we are definitely curious to see how Apple Arcade will stack up against Google’s recently announced Stadia video game streaming service. You can get a glimpse at what’s to come from Apple in the trailer below and let us know if you are excited about the new video game service from Apple in the comment section below. — Photo: Michael Short / Getty

Continued here:

Source: Prince Williams / Getty 21 Savage is implementing phase two of his Financial Literacy Bank Account campaign. The rapper stopped by Camp Jewel House Academy with Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson to teach the stem school’s fourth graders a thing or two. Savage campaigned against gun violence and versed the kids in music industry career opportunities. He also emphasized the importance in knowing how to manage your funds, as well as pledged $100 to each student who came through and opened a bank account. “For most kids, the focus is on earning money—and while that is important, to really get ahead you need to know how to manage your money, not just make it,” 21 said of his campaign, according to Complex . “Last year, I had the privilege of participating in one of 21 Savage’s philanthropic enterprises,” Congressman Johnson added, according to the site. “His events draw thousands of young people eager to hear his message. He’s very beloved by the people of Atlanta and the people of our community. 21 Savage is a young man who has found success, but he never forgot the community where he grew up.” Check out a clip of 21 schooling the kids below. Becoming History! Michelle Obama’s Memoir Sells 10 Million Copies

Read the rest here:

Source: Miller Mobley / Miller Mobley Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Becoming is making even more history! Not only was it the best-selling book of 2018 in the U.S , but it’s very close to becoming the most successful memoir of all-time. It’s being reported that she’s sold nearly 10 million copies around the world since its November debut. “We believe this could be the most successful memoir in history,” Thomas Rabe, head of one of Penguin Random House’s parent companies, said Tuesday  according to the  Wall Street Journal. Penguin’s chief executive, Markus Dohle co-signed on Rabe’s sentiments. “I’m not aware, in my personal experience with Penguin Random House, that we ever sold 10 million units of a memoir,” he said. The Hill reported that a Penguin Random House spokeswoman confirmed the numbers, saying on Tuesday that, in the United States and Canada alone, “Becoming” has “sold more than 6.2 million units across print, digital, and audio formats since its publication.”(Book sales aren’t routinely tracked in other countries.) As we previously reported ,  Becoming is an immensely personal book where Obama opened up for the first time publicly about a range of issues including experiencing a miscarriage, conceiving both of her children with IVF and having to seek couples therapy with former  President Barack Obama . In addition, the 55-year-old described falling in love with Mr Obama one summer night in Chicago. “As soon as I allowed myself to feel anything for Barack,” she writes, “the feelings came rushing – a toppling blast of lust, gratitude, fulfillment, wonder.” Since Becoming dropped last November, it’s been an instant sensation, selling out stadiums across the country for her 2018 book tour. Former President Obama’s memoir is slated to drop in the near future. RELATED NEWS: Girl, Bye! Jennifer Lopez Says All Men Are ‘Useless’ Before They’re 33 And The Internet Has A Lot To Say

Excerpt from:

Source: Sheri Determan/WENN.com / WENN A video of Jennifer Lopez from 2018 just resurfaced and it’s got the whole internet talking about when men actually mature, or in her words, actually become useful. The 49-year-old pop star made a pretty bold statement during an episode of Tinder’s Swipe Sessions series, where she gave dating advice to a woman named Brooke in an effort to help her find the perfect date. Early on in the episode, Lopez started off by swiping left (or for those of you who have never used Tinder, she basically “disliked”) on a man purely because his profile said he was 29-years-old. As she starts to swipe through the multiple different men and their profiles, Jennifer comes across a guy who’s 29 that Brooke seems interested in, but Lopez advises her against the idea, saying, “Guys, until they’re 33, are really useless.” The next man they come across had a bio that read, “If you store ketchup in the refrigerator, we’re not going to work out” which both the ladies found to be pretty off-putting–And to be fair, he was 27, so J. Lo kept pretty true to her methods throughout this whole experiment. As we mentioned before, this video came out in 2018, and there are definitely some comments from when it first surfaced of an angry few–but others totally agree with what the singer has to say. A New York-based relationship expert Dr. Jane Greer explained to Insider that Jennifer Lopez might not be wrong if commitment is what someone is looking for in a man. She told the mag: “It can take men into their early 30s to establish their professional career and feel a sense of financial stability, which helps them feel more secure in life. As a result, this can give them the maturity that comes with accomplishment, experience, and success. Sometimes you see a guy who’s been in several relationships but then, in his early 30s, suddenly he meets a woman and is ready to marry her.” Like many people have mentioned online, Jennifer definitely has a history of dating men younger than her, so she’s probably able to speak from experience on this one. A lot of fans are also bringing up the fact that Drake–who’s now 32–date Lopez when he was 30, so he might be part of the reason she has this philosophy. This video resurfacing comes right after the recent proposal and engagement between J. Lo and 43-year-old Alex Rodriquez . Like any viral moment, people have some differing opinions on this topic–but most women can at least attest to the fact that men mature at a much slower rate. Take a look at some of the reactions to Jennifer’s fool-proof dating plan below: The funniest part about J Lo saying men under 33 are useless is that she probably came to the conclusion after breaking up with Drake lmaooo — aronthealien (@aronthealien) March 25, 2019 I'm 35 and still useless. — Felipe Potes (@potesituation) March 24, 2019 Diddy rethinking about their relationship after reading this tweet pic.twitter.com/JMZFfLy3sU — Tom Shanks (@Tom__Shanks) March 26, 2019 . @JLo says men are useless before 33 and tbh she might be on to something — Dallas Ann (@miss_knierman) March 26, 2019 Me at 33 not knowing if I’m useless or not pic.twitter.com/pK4XRNz2m9 — Greatness (@Chris_723Brolic) March 26, 2019 pic.twitter.com/Mf4265EiGr — Bri (@glittermami__) March 26, 2019 BIG FACTS. https://t.co/r0DRMJ6694 — Dani With The One N (@IAmDaniCanada) March 26, 2019 J.Lo said guys are pretty much useless until 33 and I really felt that on an emotional level. — SouthernXiBelle (@SouthernXiBelle) March 24, 2019
