I t’s undeniable that rap legend Jay-Z has left an indelible mark on the music industry and he recently received a huge honor for his contributions to hip-hop and beyond. According to Billboard , his album The Blueprint has been inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry; making it the 10th hip-hop recording to join the collection. A n 8-year-old chess champion who garnered national attention after winning the New York State chess champion title for his age division has finally found a home. Tanitoluwa Adewumi —a native of Nigeria whose family fled from Africa to the U.S. to escape the Boko Haram extremist group—has moved into an apartment with his loved ones, the New York Times reported. Adewumi and his family came to America two years ago and had been living in a homeless shelter ever since, the news outlet writes. Despite the circumstances, the youngster didn’t let his family’s situation deter him from greatness. The third-grader quickly became enamored by the game of chess after learning how to play a year ago and started participating in competitive matches. He joined the chess club at his Manhattan elementary school and through the leadership of his coach Shawn Martinez he was able to reach new heights in the game. Cognizant of the youngster’s financial situation, the school waived the participation fees. Adewumi received free three-hour training sessions in Harlem. In his case, practice made perfect. He ended up winning the New York State Chess Championship title for the kindergarten through third-grade division. The national attention that he garnered for himself and his school also put the focus on his family’s unfortunate situation. There was a GoFundMe campaign launched in an effort to help his family find a permanent home. To date, the crowdfunding campaign has raised over $200,000 in a week. The family has since moved into a two-bedroom apartment not too far from Adewumi’s school. They plan on using the money to create a fund called the Tanitoluwa Adewumi Foundation which will help African immigrants in the U.S. who are struggling to make ends meet. “Anybody who is coming from Africa who is in the position we were in, we will help them. I want to release my blessing to others,” Adewumi’s father Kayode told the news outlet. “Anybody who is coming from Africa who is in the position we were in, we will help them.” Tanitoluwa hopes to one day become the youngest chess grandmaster. He has received scholarships from a few prestigious schools and was invited to meet former president Bill Clinton at his office in Harlem. The rapper born Daniel Hernandez also got a mild victory after he was allowed to bring back his former lead attorney after previously being told there were conflicts of interest. The Blast reports : According to court documents obtained by The Blast, a New York judge has determined 6ix9ine’s former lawyer, Lance Lazarro, can come back on as lead attorney for the rapper, as soon as the Tekashi signs off on it. Lazarro was taken off the case by the judge after concerns over conflict of interest because he previously represented two men who are co-defendants in the criminal case. The judge ruled that after reviewing all the evidence, 6ix9ine’s lawyer has shown there is no risk to the other co-defendants if he continues working for 6ix9ine. A hearing was scheduled for March 28 where the rapper will have to tell the judge he agrees. A meeting between Ms. Savage and her family was said to be under coordination with a report stating Kelly’s team ended talks on when and where that reunion could take place. TMZ reports : R. Kelly’s team is having a hard time arranging a meeting between Joycelyn Savage and her parents … because both sides can’t agree on a location. R. Kelly’s rep, Darrell Johnson, tells TMZ … Joycelyn is not opposed to meeting with her mom and dad, but she only wants to meet them in Chicago. We’re told the Savage family wants to meet Joycelyn at her grandmother’s home — which is outside the Windy City — because Grandma’s battling cancer. The Savages have made it clear from the beginning … they want to meet in a neutral location outside of Chicago. So, both sides remain at a standstill … even though it’s been two weeks since R. Kelly’s team agreed to set up a meeting between Joycelyn and her fam. T hree days out of the week Amantina Sosa would wake up before the sun rose to prepare for an early morning shift at Starbucks. Following her barista shift Sosa—a Bronx native—would hop on the train and rush from the Midtown Starbucks location to Harlem to participate in a tech and entrepreneurship program designed for underserved adults. Prior to getting involved with the program, she says she would have never considered pursuing a career in tech, and now she’s on a path to creating her own app. “I didn’t think that I could pursue tech as a career,” she said. “This program made me see that tech wasn’t something that was far in reach.” For Sosa, the early mornings and long days were worth it because she knew she was investing in her future. Like Sosa, many underserved young adults in New York City, have struggled to forge their own paths due to the lack of access and exposure to career readiness resources. Disrupt Harlem Code Squad—a Harlem-based free 16-week program designed to empower adults between the ages of 18 and 24 to step into entrepreneurship and expose them to career pathways in tech—is aiming to change that narrative. Participants learn how to code, experience what it’s like to work at tech companies first-hand through field trips, and receive ongoing mentorship from tech leaders and entrepreneurs. Students are placed on teams and work on creating their own digital projects which are presented before a panel of judges on Demo Day. The program has proven to be nothing short of impactful. A lot of the participants in the 2018 cohort say that being a part of Disrupt Harlem has given them a strong sense of purpose and inspired them to further their entrepreneurial endeavors. For many of the students representation was key; seeing themselves reflected in their instructors and mentors had a positive influence. “It really showed me that technology is a driving force in everything,” said participant Aniya Carter . Carter, a recent college grad, has always had a passion for entrepreneurship and says that Disrupt Harlem Code Squad provided her with the foundation to build her own business. For her Demo Day project, she created a platform called Jigsaw which helps connect job seekers and employers. “It was a great experience. It was encouraging to see that everyone looked like me. It was run by Black people and the students were Black which was motivating.” Like Carter, program participant Mark Farrel hopes to be at the helm of his own business within the next few years. Farrel—who worked at Bloomingdale’s while participating in Disrupt Harlem Code Squad—has always been passionate about pursuing a career in fashion. The Harlemite says the program has shown him how he can merge fashion and technology. “It became my safe haven. Prior to this, I didn’t have a support system,” Farrel told NewsOne. “It caters to individuals who aren’t taking the traditional educational route. It showed me how I can disrupt the fashion industry through technology.” Farrel and his team created an app called CopIt which gives you details about a piece of clothing by taking a photo. He says he wants to continue to learn more about front-end and back-end development and hopes to become an app developer in the future. There is a need for culturally sensitive entrepreneurship and tech education programs for young adults in inner-city communities. Ones that are understanding of the daily struggles that they face and can provide guidance and show them how to overcome them. “DHCS provides a holistic approach to educating young adults. We don’t just teach the tech skills needed to enter the industry, but also what’s traditionally considered soft skills. Things like emotional intelligence and networking are key in developing a successful career,” said Program Director Philomena Boateng . “Over the course of the program, our students have grown as not only entrepreneurs and tech professionals. We often say our network is our net worth and they’ve truly taken steps to meet new people and jumpstart their careers.” DHCS is gearing up for its next cohort and plans on continuing to make an impact in the lives of young adults of color in New York City. Instead of giving her bridesmaids bouquets to carry down the aisle, Samantha Clark gave them adoptable puppies from a local rescue group to hold onto instead. The gushing bride told The Dodo.com , “I have three dogs of my own. I originally wanted to incorporate them, but they already have a home and plenty of love. I wanted to incorporate animals that needed both: love and a home. We had a booth set up at the wedding and reception that had a log of adoptable dogs. I’ve been told many adoption applications have been submitted.” But what is it about the baby canines that just makes an humans heart melt?
