MODEL MONDAY: Bri Findlay Fought To Make Her Runway Dreams A Reality

Agency:   Major Model Management Instagram:   @bri.findlay  Claim to Fame: If you’ve ever considered picking up one of e.l.f.’s pore refining glam glitter masks this is the pretty face that’s been staring back at you from the ads. View this post on Instagram Super thankful to start off the new year with my elf fam! It’s such an unreal feeling to go online and see my face lol! I overcame a lot within myself over the course of 2017 and I’m so grateful for the continued support of my friends and family. Yay 2018 Thanks @jakahn @moisays @ashleydahlen @talentmanmodels @makeurmark @vicky_steckel @imgmodels @elfcosmetics A post shared by BRI (@bri.findlay) on Jan 4, 2018 at 6:53pm PST Bri Findlay’s modeling career started in a hallway. Rushing between classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology Findlay had a brush with “destiny” when an instructor at the institute suggested that she consider modeling. In an exclusive interview with Hello Beautiful, Findlay explained working with other models to gain valuable information about the industry and how a quick tap on the shoulder completely changed the course of her career. “It wasn’t even my professor . He just saw me in the hallway and was like, ‘do you model?’,” she said. The 5’10” design student said that the moment felt like “destiny,” as it opened her up to a slew of industry insiders who all seemed eager to help her get started. “It just seemed like one person after the other kind of introduced me to the next person and I ended up getting signed.” Photo Credit: Lee & Cris Photography Signing to one of the most prestigious agencies in the business signified a clear route to overnight success for Findlay. She immediately became consumed with thoughts of all of the amazing opportunities that she just knew were already on their way. To her surprise though getting signed was just the first feat on the path. “Things got a little rocky after that,” she said. “It’s not always a straight shot.” She continued, “I thought that things would be easy. I thought I would be taken care of. I thought I would have direction. I thought that whatever agent that I got would basically help and take care of me.” Assumptions were all she had to go on because unlike more traditional careers like law and medicine there was no handbook on how to conduct yourself as a model. She explained that instead of being lavished with the support of an attentive team focused on nothing but getting her to the top she was placed in a position to learn about the realities of how much work it took to move up in the modeling industry. Soon she was left to figure out the dynamics of the business completely on her own after experiencing a routine occurrence many models experience but few discuss openly…being dropped. Fortunately, Findlay was no stranger to hustle . Her journey to FIT has included plenty of it.  Before she began filling her tote with sketchpads and notebooks to capture the constant stream of ideas she has on photoshoot sets, the Flatbush native clawed her way to getting a proper secondary education. She researched the best schools available to her that prioritized the arts and auditioned for several schools to make sure she had a place. “There’s not a lot of high schools that even have that in New York,” she said.  She portrayed the stiff competition as “ American Idol but for drawing, if they really liked you then you got accepted to the school.” Photo Credit: Lee & Cris Photography She stayed committed because she knew there were no alternatives for her, she had to be able to express herself for a living. “It wasn’t something I could put down. It wasn’t something that was gonna leave me. Design and creativity all of that is a part of my personality.” She took the same “no plan B” approach she took to finding a high school and applied it to finding a new agency being proactive about moving forward. “You have to be really resourceful on your own and you have to keep pushing yourself because at the end of the day these agencies are managing hundreds of other models at the same time. What I realize is often times they don’t even have enough time to get around to every girl. So, it’s essential to take notes and learn as much as you can and ask questions of other models and really just build your knowledge on the industry , so you just have that extra knowledge in your back pocket.” “I did get dropped a year ago,” she admitted. “But then I resigned to Major,” she added proudly. The experience taught her that the only way she was going to get ahead was if she tapped into her ability to advocate for herself and expanded her circle so that she could learn from others. Photo Credit: Lee & Cris Photography She turned not only to the professor who scouted her, she describes him as “still very much present” in her life but to other models who might have had similar experiences. While a lack of perceived support left her feeling “out of place an uncomfortable” around the other models initially she pushed past that feeling and reached out to others. “Other people in the industry helped me, other models . We kind of formed a little coalition and helped each other out. We give each other advice and hope for the best.” Today she’s continuing to immerse herself in all the ways one can be creative in the design industry and working towards building her own design business. She says modeling has significantly informed her work as an artist and being on set allows her “get how design works,” in a new way.  After walking at Fashion Week in New York and Paris this year she feels confident about where her career is heading and excited about the future. “Things are on the up and up now.” DON’T MISS: MODEL MONDAY: Muslim Model Leah Vernon Is Body Positive Without Baring It All MODEL MONDAY: Flaviana Matata Is Using Modeling To Give Girls In Her Country A Future MODEL MONDAY: Ambre Anderson Went From Staying On A Couch To Owning A Condo By Keeping Focused [ione_media_gallery src=”https://hellobeautiful.com” id=”3024203″ overlay=”true”]

Beyond Hip Hop: Rapsody Talks Acting Goals, Tomboy Style & The Tardy Tenacity Of Ms. Lauryn Hill

Read more from the original source:

Source: @photosbynae / iOne Digital As one of North Carolina’s top-tier M.C.’s, Rapsody has created a comfortable space for herself in the rap game. With her lauded album Laila’s Wisdom under her belt, along with celebrated mixtapes and memorable features with folks like Kendrick Lamar , Rapsody is now looking to take on other endeavors. This definitely doesn’t mean she’s quitting the rap game. Instead, she hopes to exercise more aspects of her creative side. Rapsody stopped by Global Grind on International Women’s Day to discuss some of these burgeoning interests: “I have so many other loves,” Rapsody said. “Like I was a big reader as a kid. I went to the library all the time, so for that, I want to write children’s books.” Rapsody also has the dramatic arts on her mind: “I’d love to get into acting, but I want to do it right. You know I’ve been sent several scripts, but I told my agent to hold off because I really want to take classes and really learn about the art of acting. Like I would want somebody trying to enter the hip hop world to be respectful of the culture and learn the art of M.C.ing, I want to learn how to be a great actor.” The 36-year-old listed Cicely Tyson and Phylicia Rashad as her biggest influences: “If I can have the chance to share a screen with them. Even if I was the person who came in and put the milk on the table. Just to be in that space and just to have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and wisdom because they’ve been in the arts forever.” Inspirational Black women have been a common theme in Rapsody’s career. Although she’s listed people like Jay-Z as a major influence on her rhyming, women like Ms. Lauryn Hill set a standard right when Rapsody needed it. Since Hill’s seminal work The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,  she hasn’t acquired the best reputation when it comes to showing up on time for shows or even creating a good relationship with certain band mates ( according to Robert Glasper ). However, Rapsody says there’s always more to an artist than what’s put into the public: “Lauryn runs her business the way Lauryn wants to run her business,” Rapsody said, “It’s two sides to every story. Robert told his, Lauryn told hers. It’s none of my business. It’s not my place to critique as far as her shows or her lateness.” Rapsody also doesn’t let the tough talk diminish Ms. Hill’s impact on her life: “You know, for me, I always say Lauryn was on time when we needed her. When I needed Lauryn in ’98 and ’96, she was on time, so to me, she’s allowed to be late. I think the industry has been trying to run her for her life, so for her to take control of what she wants to do and do it her way, I applaud her on that.” Rapsody went on to detail the various reasons Hill could be late to a show: “You know as a mother, putting your children first, I’m never mad at that. You gotta be late because you got something to do with your kids, then do that. You know at this point, if you know she’s going to be late and you ain’t with it, then don’t buy the ticket. If you decide to go, take some Uno cards just in case. I’m just in the business of appreciating Lauryn while she’s here.” Just like Ms. Hill set a blueprint for many women to come, Rapsody hopes to follow that same path with music, the arts and even fashion one day: “I definitely want to do my own clothing line at some point. Maybe like some tomboy feminine-type style ’cause women that are tomboys are sexy too, so I want to create a space for that.” If Cicely Tyson, Phylicia Rashad and Ms. Hill have taught us anything, it’s that there’s always space.

New Study Reveals Marijuana Before Sex Could Lead To Mind Blowing Orgasms

Source: CraigSwatton / Getty Via Madamenoire: This post is of course only for our readers who live in states where marijuana is legal, so the rest of you can click the “X” now. Okay, now that the coast is clear, there is some new anecdotal evidence that weed can help improve your orgasm power, according to a new study from the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ) The authors gathered data from 373 subjects (mostly white, heterosexual women) and mined information from their surveys about their sex life, sex drive, orgasms and lubrication level. They also asked them about their marijuana usage and if they partook in some MJ prior to bedroom fun. “Among those who reported using marijuana before sex, 68.5 percent stated that the overall sexual experience was more pleasurable, 60.6 percent noted an increase in sex drive, and 52.8 percent reported an increase in satisfying orgasms,” the authors of the report explain. After all, women tend to start to orgasm in their mind first–when all their fears and anxieties are relaxed and they can simply focus on their pleasure. Deion Sanders Sues Over Missing Grand Piano, Damaged Memorabilia

View post:

Source: Cindy Ord / Getty Deion Sanders is currently in a legal tussle with some moving companies he claims damaged some priceless items along with losing a whole grand piano. The Blast reports : According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Sanders filed a lawsuit against North Texas Movers, Officer Interiors Group and Bekins A-1 Movers. Sanders says he hired Bekins A-1 Movers to move his valuable contents — including priceless heirlooms and collectible items of both “significant intrinsic, personal value to Mr. Sanders” worth in excess of $1 million — from his Texas mansion to storage. Sanders says he paid them handsomely to keep his “irreplaceable pieces” safe. He says in November 2018, he learned that the facility where his property was stored had been sold off to a third-party company, named Office Interiors Group. Sanders went the following month to get answers and claims he saw his stuff was being improperly stored and claimed that some items were broken and that some crates were missing. The outlet adds that Sanders believes his items were hauled off to another location and was put off the path by the company owners. After some haggling, Sanders gained access to the facility where he discovered some of his items were damaged and missing. A judge granted a temporary restraining order against the company that bars them from moving any other items. Sounds like the jig to us. — Photo: Getty

Katrina Pierson Thinks Trump Isn’t Racist Because No Black People Worked In Lincoln’s White House

More here:

E ver since Michael Cohen reminded us at his hearing that President Trump is a stone-cold racist, the White House has been throwing out all of their sunken place loyalists. Now, a Trump adviser has become the latest one to embarrasses herself on national television. See Also: While The Government Is Shut Down, Ben Carson’s Incompetence Threatens Poor Families’ Housing While talking to Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC over the weekend, Katrina Pierson was asked how many African-Americans worked in the West Wing. Pierson stumbled answering the question before offering up this gem she dug up from the sunken place. “I’m not going to participate in the attempt to make this all about race. It is ridiculous. How many black people were in Abraham Lincoln’s West Wing?” she asked. “Is Abraham Lincoln a racist because he didn’t have a black person in his White House? This is insane. This is an insane discussion.” Looking shocked at the worst rebuttal ever, Sharpton looked back to 1861 before the Civil War. “First of all, if you need to go back to Lincoln… You can’t name a Black in the West Wing because we can’t find one, Katrina, I pity you,” Sharpton clapped back. “I’d sympathize with you, but telling me you applied, and other people? Come on. It’s unthinkable in the 21st century that even a spokesperson for President Trump can’t name a black in the West Wing.” She then randomly brought up Will Smith and identity politics. Watch below, which starts at the 32:00 mark: Pierson, who has been serving as a senior adviser to Trump’s 2020 campaign, was one of the president’s most ardent Black voices when he first ran for the White House, defending her boss against opponents (Democrats and Republicans) on cable news stations. Her shady past  certainly didn’t help her image of being either uninformed or a bald-faced liar (or both). For example, she bizarrely blamed President  Barack Obama  for  starting the war  in Afghanistan. Obama, however, was a state senator at the time that war began. She also  disrespected Obama  by referring to him as the “head Negro in charge.” This is also the same person who said slavery was “good history.” Welcome to the trash of the 2020 campaign . It’s going to be an ugly one. SEE ALSO: If The Innovators Of New Jack Swing Aren’t Mad At Bruno Mars, Why Are Millennials? Standing By Massa!
