B lack directors are making power moves in the entertainment industry. Many of them are racking up accolades for their work while breaking down racial barriers in an effort to ensure that the next generation of Black filmmakers have a seat at the table. One of those trailblazers is Chinonye Chukwu . Chukwu recently made history at the Sundance Film Festival by becoming the first Black woman to win the Grand Jury Prize for her movie Clemency , IndieWire reported. #Sundance2019 : “Clemency” Filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu Is First Black Woman to Win Festival's Biggest Prize https://t.co/jLS5yQ2RP4 pic.twitter.com/3w88ZlmiAc — IndieWire (@IndieWire) February 3, 2019 The prize is the highest honor that is given at the festival, the news outlet writes. Chukwu’s film —which stars Alfre Woodard , Danielle Brooks , Wendell Pierce , and Aldis Hodge —is centered on a prison warden who has to carry out death row executions. The film explores how doing the executions has a psychological impact. Chukwu, who wrote and directed the film, is humbled by the honor. “When everybody was saying ‘No’ this story does not have an audience, you, Sundance and the people who have seen this film have proven that there is an audience for this film, and I thank you,” she said in a statement, according to Deadline . “I wrote this because I wanted audiences, I wanted us, I wanted myself to connect with the ecosystem of humanity’s connected to incarceration, so we as a society can stop defining people by their worst possible acts, that we can end mass incarceration, and dismantle the mass prison industrial complex, and root our societies in true justice and mercy and freedom, which is all tied to our joy inside, that nobody can ever incarcerate or execute.” The filmmaker joins a distinguished list of pivotal directors who have won the Grand Jury Prize for their U.S. Dramatic entries, including Ryan Coogler , Damien Chazelle , and Desiree Akhavan . Black women in entertainment are starting off the year strong. In January, Marsai Martin made history as Hollywood’s youngest executive producer, Regina Hall became the first Black woman to receive a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, and Taraji P. Henson received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. SEE ALSO: #BlackExcellence: Taraji P. Chicago Woman Leads Effort To Provide Hotel Rooms For City’s Homeless

Read the rest here:

A s the deep freeze sweeps several parts of the country, concerns surrounding the homeless population have been heightened. Temperatures have reached dangerously cold levels and many are worried about how those living on the streets will stay warm. A Chicago woman has taken matters into her own hands. According to CBS Chicago , Candice Payne rented hotel rooms this week so that the city’s homeless residents could have shelter in the cold weather. Candice Payne's selfless act spurred a group to rent 60 hotel rooms to keep homeless people off the streets of Chicago during the historic cold. “Maybe they didn’t know how to or where to start to help, so I’m glad that I was able to be that vehicle.” https://t.co/m7s5WVjgaC pic.twitter.com/Nip4kI8bKh — CBS Chicago (@cbschicago) February 1, 2019 Payne was motivated to step in and help men and women in need after she learned that a propane tank where many homeless people stayed in a cluster of tents had exploded, the news outlet writes. That tank was one of the only sources of heat for the community. Payne decided to step in and rented 20 rooms on her credit card so that individuals without homes would have a place to stay during the frigid temperatures. After posts about her efforts to help the homeless circulated on social media, other individuals volunteered to help. People rented out additional hotel rooms, and donated food, water, and clothes. With the support of volunteers, there has been a total of 60 rooms rented. Nearly 100 people have been accommodated for three-night stays. Payne is happy that she was able to make an impact. “Maybe they didn’t know how to or where to start to help, so I’m glad that I was able to be that vehicle,” she told the news outlet. The individuals that she has helped are thankful for all that Payne has done. “We don’t get that type of help,” one of the people staying at the hotel said. “I really needed them at that point, so they came right in time.” She and the volunteers are working towards creating more of a lasting solution for the city’s homeless population. Efforts like the one she has led are needed. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development , in 2017 there were 554,000 homeless people in the United States and 193,000 of those individuals were living on the streets and didn’t have access to shelters. Shiggy made the shocking announcement on his Instagram page. He posted a message saying, “Stop asking me to dance… I’M DONE”. As expected, no one in his comments really took him seriously. Many of his celebrity fans laughed off his plea. One follower said, “Nah bro, you gotta dance! At least do it for the kids”, to which Shiggy replied, “Nah, I’m done for real. Shit not fun no more. You could see it in my eyes.” For what it’s worth, Shiggy has been looking miserable with the on demand dancing for a while now. In a recent video, Harlem rapper Dave East demanded Shiggy dance on cue. At first, Shiggy attempted to play it off as if he didn’t hear him, but that didn’t stop the chants. Needless to say, Shiggy did what he was told.   Even social media caught on to Shiggy’s cries for help. they got shiggy dancing in Dave east IG videos and he just tryna chill pic.twitter.com/HjtYGENkXz — Freddy B (@FredBeezy561) January 29, 2019 I mean, he didn’t lie, you really can see the misery in his eyes. Just a few days ago, on Instagram Live, he told his fans that he was going to call it quits and even blamed Dave East for making him realize how much he hates “shooking and jiving.” I guess no one believed him then, either. While at a game at the Barclays Center, Shiggy did the In My Feelings challenge courtside for the entire world to see. He looked happy enough on the outside. Who knew he was being tortured within, though. Then again, Black Twitter could see he was being manipulated by the masses. They wasted no time making memes.
