For the dancer, it’s all about representation. She hopes taking on the role will inspire other dancers to follow in her footsteps. “I think that it will show young dancers of color that they can do anything,” she said in a statement, according to the news outlet. Kansas City Ballet Artistic Director Devon Carney is excited for Huell to take on the lead role in their production. “I couldn’t imagine a better opportunity than to have the chance to be artistic director and see this come to life, finally, here for Kansas City Ballet. It’s a very important moment for all of us,” he said. Ballerinas like Huell and Misty Copeland are using their platform and artistry to increase the representation of Black dancers in their field. “I understand why I’m important and mean so much to a lot of people,” said Copeland in an interview with Refinery29 . “I have so much pride, and I take on the responsibility willingly. It’s so much bigger than me, and it’s not about me, but what I represent.” SEE ALSO: Harvard Crimson Appoints First Black Woman President Tyler Perry Pays Off $434,000 In Layaway Debt For Atlanta Shoppers [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3839440″ overlay=”true”]

British Soccer Player Blames Fan Abuse On Media Racial Bias That’s Also Found In The US

See the original post here:

A Black British soccer player ignored the racist abuse yelled at him from a fan but commented on how it was fueled by the racial bias of some media outlets, which is also seen in the United States. SEE ALSO: Texas Official Defends Racist Stereotype: ‘You Can’t Count On A Black Quarterback’ England and Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling said Sunday that irresponsible media outlets to “fuel racism” through their portrayal of young Black soccer players, the Guardian reported. His remarks appeared on social media after the police launched an investigation into a fan of the opposing team who was recorded on video at Saturday’s match allegedly yelling a racial slur at Sterling. It happened in the first half of a match against Chelsea when Sterling went to pick up the ball in front of the stands. “…For all the newspapers that don’t understand why people are racists in this day and age, all I have to say is have a second thought about fair publicity and give all players an equal chance,” Sterling wrote on Instagram . BT are apparently investigating the footage of Sterling being racially abused. 1st time I saw this pic i thought Sterling was laughing in their faces whilst they shouted. I hope that’s what he did. Look how angry they are. No place for this venom in football #MCFC #Sterling pic.twitter.com/WVs5oo7yOb — Paul McGarraghy (@PaulMcGarraghy) December 8, 2018 In his media post, Sterling gave the example of a young Black player who was criticized in a newspaper article for “splashing” his salary on a mansion before he even played his first professional match. Sterling said the rookie buying a house for his mother was the right thing to do, but Sterling also noted that the paper failed to criticize a young white player who did the same thing. “This young Black kid is looked at in a bad light,” Sterling stated. A University of Missouri researcher in 2015 reported similar media racial bias in the United States on how athletes are covered. Stories on African-American athletes focus primarily on criminal actions while stories about white athletes are overwhelmingly positive. Among the findings, more than 66 percent of the crime stories involved Black athletes while only 22 percent involved white athletes. More than 70 percent of domestic violence stories involved Black athletes and only 17 percent involved white athletes. “True cultural sensitivity requires the eradication of racial and ethnic stereotyping; thus, journalists and reporters must reflect on how their own unfounded beliefs about race differences in sports likely contribute to the stereotyping of black athletes as engaged in more criminal activity and innately physically gifted yet lacking in intelligence and strong work ethics,” the researcher Cynthia Frisby said. By Sunday morning, the authorities had not arrested the fan. “We are aware of a video circulating online in which it is claimed racial abuse was allegedly directed at a player … We will review the footage to determine whether any offences have been committed,” a statement from the Metropolitan police said. Scholarship For HBCU Students Created To Honor Legacy Of Richard Collins III

Original post:

T he legacy of Richard Collins III —a student who tragically lost his life on the University of Maryland’s campus last year—will be kept alive through the creation of scholarships for HBCU students in the Maryland area, the Journal for Blacks in Higher Education reported. An annual $1 million scholarship was launched in honor of Richard Collins III, a Bowie State University student killed in May 2017. It will support ROTC cadets at all four of Maryland's HBCU's. https://t.co/qbOcD6ncMN — WJZ | CBS Baltimore (@wjz) November 29, 2018 Collins—who was a senior at Bowie State University—was the victim of a hate crime, the news outlet writes. While visiting the University of Maryland he was fatally stabbed by a white man. Collins had so much going for him. He was a 2nd Lt. in the Reserve Officer Training Corps and was slated to graduate just days before he lost his life. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan recently shared that the state would fund a $1 million scholarship—dubbed the 2nd Lt. Richard W. Collins III Leadership with Honor Scholarship—which will be awarded to students who attend historically Black colleges and universities and are a part of the Reserve Officer Training Corps. Students who attend Coppin State University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, and Bowie State University will be eligible for the scholarship. The families of several individuals who lost their lives to violence have chosen to honor their legacies by helping others further their education. The family of Tamara E. O’Neal —a medical student who was murdered by her boyfriend in Chicago—launched the Tamara E. O’Neal Memorial Fund as an avenue to create scholarships for young, Black medical students. “Tamara was an incredible advocate, particularly for physicians of color or anyone that may have expressed an inkling of doubt, as her disarming nature and warm smile made it easy for even the shyest aspiring doctor to inquire about the amazing job she loved, and in due time lend herself as a resource,” said one of her classmates in a statement . Deontay Wilder Says Floyd Mayweather Is Jealous Of Him [Video]

Read the original here:

Source: Anadolu Agency / Getty Deontay Wilder is fresh off a draw after his exciting match with Tyson Fury, cementing his place as a fighter to watch in the coming years. Wilder hit back at Floyd Mayweather , who seems to not be a fan of the heavyweight slugger, with the “Bronze Bomber” saying Money is essentially a hater. TMZ Sports reports : We got Wilder out in L.A. just days after he and Tyson Fury put together the most entertaining draw in boxing history and he says, while the world was stoked on the fight, Floyd wasn’t. “They loved it, they loved every bit of it. The world loved it, and I don’t think he liked that though. He wants all the attention on him, and it’s sad that it’s like that.” Deontay’s logic is that he’s a heavyweight, and the big guys are the ones fans REALLY want to see, so it’s just a matter of time before he’s at the top of the sport, and the old guys have to get used to it. When we asked him if he’ll ever make Floyd Mayweather money, he says it’s definitely in the future for him, and once again, seems to take shots at Money. “I’m coming, and it’s a lot of fighters that’s jealous of me for no reason. I’ve never said nothing bad about no one, I’ve always wished them well.” It appears that Mayweather and plenty of others thought Fury should have won the fight despite him being knocked down twice. At any rate, a Wilder and Fury rematch is most certainly primed for the future after their acclaimed match. — Photo: Getty

Omarosa Takes A Swipe At John Kelly’s Dismissal As White House Chief Of Staff

Read more from the original source:

T here’s an old saying: what goes around comes around. That’s how Omarosa Manigault Newman responded to news that the White House chief of staff John Kelly , who fired Omarosa last year, was ousted from his job. The former reality TV star called Kelly’s dismissal “karma.” SEE ALSO: Omarosa Kept Away From Trump As John Kelly Limits Oval Office Access President Donald Trump announced Saturday that Kelly will leave his job by the end of this year. Kelly was increasingly isolated in the White House and lost favor with the president, according to the Associated Press . “John Kelly will be leaving — I don’t know if I can say retiring — but he’s a great guy. John Kelly will be leaving at the end of the year. We’ll be announcing who will be taking John’s place — it might be on an interim basis. I’ll be announcing that over the next day or two, but John will be leaving at the end of the year. … I appreciate his service very much,” the president stated. #karma https://t.co/GioEfHOF2B — OMAROSA (@OMAROSA) December 8, 2018 In December 2017, Kelly fired Omarosa who worked at the White House as an aide to Trump. Omarosa provided NBC News with an audio recording in August of Kelly firing her in the Situation Room. “It’s come to my attention over the last few months that there’s been some pretty, in my opinion, significant integrity issues,” Kelly told Omarosa. She took it as a threat when Kelly suggested that a smooth exit from the White House would help her reputation. “I think it’s important to understand that if we can make this a friendly departure we can all be, you know, you can look at your time here in the White House as a year of service to the nation, and then you can go on without any type of difficulty in the future relative to your reputation,” Kelly said on the tape. Kelly, a retired Marine Corps four-star general came to the White House in June 2017 after serving briefly as Trump’s homeland security secretary. He was expected to be the adult in the room and bring order to the chaotic White House. His no-nonsense approach to managing the White House and who had access to the president alienated some Trump allies, causing him to become isolated to have a diminished role, according to the Associated Press. At the same time, he openly talked about the tribulations of working for the president, which angered Trump. During this time at the White House, Kelly created controversy when he tried to slander Florida’s Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson , who was feuding with Trump over his mistreatment of Army Sgt. La David Johnson ’s widow Myeshia Johnson . Kelly also ignited controversy when he disregarded slavery as a cause of the Civil War and praised Confederate General Robert E. Lee during an interview with Fox News. Kid Cudi, Wiz Khalifa & More Own The Spotlight At BAPE Heads Show In NYC

Read more:

Source: Tenzin Sherub / CM Media The energy was high on Thursday night at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. The influential Tokyo clothing brand A Bathing Ape (a.k.a. BAPE) celebrated their 25th anniversary with the BAPE HEADS SHOW starring Kid Cudi , Wiz Khalifa ,  Big Sean and more. BAPE has a lengthy history of combining fashion and music with their very first BAPE HEADS SHOW going down in 1997. The brand created the concert series as a way to show love to their fans and the artists who support them. Over the years, everyone from Kanye West to N.E.R.D. has hit the BAPE stage. The show on Thursday, December 6 was the first show to be held in New York City and it was produced by LTB Entertainment Inc. and CM Media. Lil Yachty opened up the show and he definitely set the tone right with his high energy songs. Fans across the Hulu Theater were out of their seats, rocking to bops like “NBAYOUNGBOAT” and his infectious hit with DRAM “Broccoli.”   Pusha T was next in line and he easily pushed through the seven track off his brief, yet undeniable album Daytona. “ Rap album of the year,” he repeated throughout his set. With a recent Best Rap Album Grammy nomination , you can’t call Push a liar. Once Push’s set was done, it was only right that he transitioned by bringing fellow GOOD Music artist Big Sean on the stage for the tracks “Mercy” and the “I Don’t Like” remix. From there, Pusha T left the stage and Big Sean breezed through hits like “Blessings” and “I Don’t Fu** With You.” In between songs, Sean talked about how BAPE helped jump-start his career by booking him for performances and he encouraged people to follow their dreams. After Sean’s inspirational words, it was all about the buzz and the party when Wiz Khalifa came out. Naturally, he encouraged his fans to light up throughout the show as he performed party tracks like “Gin & Drugs.” Then when it came to inspirational songs like “See You Again,” he encouraged his fans to sing along. “Ya sound good,” he said to the crowd as they swayed back and forth. The highlight of the night probably came from the show’s closer Kid Cudi . The 34-year-old hasn’t had an easy time in the spotlight, especially after revealing he suffered from depression back in 2016.  But now, after finding joy through the sadness , Cudi was all smiles as he performed to adoring fans at MSG. This was evident when he closed out with the song “Reborn” from his collaborative album with Kanye West Kids See Ghosts.  Cudi seemed to be a new man as he jumped into the crowd to sign posters and to show his fans love. All of this was the perfect way to celebrate BAPE’s 25th anniversary and the brand isn’t done celebrating. BAPE released a limited edition BAPE HEADS SHOW t-shirt that’s available at their New York and L.A. store, as well as US.BAPE.COM . A second limited-edition t-shirt is set to drop on Saturday, December 8 at the BAPE store in New York, located at 91 Greene Street.

Let It Gooo: 10 Classic Shows We’d Rather See On Netflix Besides Friends

More here:

Source: Jean-Paul Aussenard / Getty The power of the Internet has struck again, and this time, Netflix was it’s victim. False reports have been spreading all month long that the streaming service would be getting rid of Friends as of January 1, 2019. But as we all know, Friends fans will do anything to keep Chandler, Ross, Rachel and the rest of the crew on air as long as humanly possible. According to Entertainment Weekly , “A Change.org petition was even launched begging Netflix to keep the title, calling its removal “unfair, unacceptable and downright inhumane.” Although Netflix had no intention on getting rid of the popular show, they must’ve got wind of the backlash, because the following day it was reported that the streaming service paid $100 million to keep Friends throughout 2019. EW added, “Netflix bought the rights to Friends back in 2014 in a massive deal, shelling out $118 million for the rights for all 10 seasons of the former NBC series. Plus the service digitally remastered every episode for HD streaming. Netflix introduced Friends to a new generation where it became popular all over again as a dose of ’90s nostalgia.” But is it just us, or are there far better shows out there that would probably cost much less than Friends and bring in twice as many viewers? The service has also been criticized for getting rid of content that were predominantly geared toward people of color. @AlsWulf tweeted , “Netflix out here dropping amazing shows that have a positive impact on the minority community like The Get Down due to it being “too expensive”, but drop $100mil on Friends because a certain demographic complained.” @CandaceJeanne also brought up a great point. She wrote, “Dearest @Netflix: Think of all the projects from women, people of color, LGBTQ folks and more that you could fund with that additional $60 million. (I mean, I don’t know how much it costs to make a show but I’m gonna guess it’s at least more than one.)” If Netflix knew what was good for them, they’d listen to millenials and POC — a.k.a. their central audience —about what content folks would like to see on the service. So we put together a list, just in case they need some help. Hit the flip to check it out. And if we missed anything, share your thoughts on Twitter and Facebook.
