Olivette Otele Becomes First Black Woman History Professor In The UK

The rest is here:

D r. Olivette Otele is breaking barriers for Black women in the United Kingdom’s higher education system. Otele has made history by becoming the first Black woman history professor in the UK, Blavity reported. Black British history has just been made! Dr. Olivette Otele is now the first Black woman to be a history professor in the UK https://t.co/Kfb9jKJNPR pic.twitter.com/x6lgwDI82P — Blavity News (@Blavity) October 24, 2018 She was chosen to lead history courses at Bath Spa University’s Newton Park on Duchy of Cornwall campus, the news outlet writes. Otele—a native of Cameroon—has several degrees under her belt, including a degree in literature and history from the Paris-based Universite La Sorbonne, a Master of Advanced Study, and her doctorate degree. Her work has been featured in several publications and she has penned her own book. Otele’s work is centered on history and how it has shaped race and identity in the UK. After being appointed, she took to Twitter to share her excitement about taking on the new role. “BIG NEWS: my people, @BathSpaUni has awarded me a professorship and a Chair in History,” she tweeted. “May this open the door 2many hard working women, especially WoC, even + specifically Black women, in academia in general & in History in particular. In strength, peace and love my ppl.” Otele believes that exploring history is imperative to understanding the state of society today. She also says that opening up and generating conversations about what has happened in the past can create unity. “I still (naively I’m told) believe that understanding the past and who we are as people will show us the way forward. History is about sharing stories and coming together as communities of people. That’s why one of my main areas of research is memory and memorialization of the past,” she said in an interview . “Understanding that each one of us has the power to make our world an interesting and wonderful place is crucial. Historians don’t just tell stories. They engage with the workings of human nature. Even ‘just’ telling the story is a powerful act that can be turned into a tool for social justice.” This has been a big year for Black women in academia. In August, it was announced that for the first time in Harvard University’s history, four of the institution’s schools were being led by African-American women. Watch: Chris Rock And Keegan-Michael Key School Black Folks On How To Respond To Voter Suppression

More:

C hris Rock and Keegan-Michael Key brought humor to the serious issue of voter suppression in a video that informs African-Americans about their rights. SEE ALSO: ‘I Approve This Message!’: Oprah Fires Up Georgia Voters For Stacey Abrams The comedians appeared together in a video clip released on Friday by NowThis and Color of Change days before the crucial midterm elections on Tuesday. Since the  early voting season got underway , advocacy groups have been fighting against a growing list of alleged suppression efforts by Republicans—much of it targeting African-Americans. In the opening scene, Key says, “Hi. I’m Keegan-Michael Key, and I’m here to talk to you about the importance of…” Rock’s voice is heard in the background yelling, “Cut!” He pushes Key to cut to the chase because people already know his name. Key tries again, rambling on about “efforts underway across America” to prevent “certain groups from voting.” “What are the groups you’re talking about? New Kids on the Block? Spice Girls? ‘Groups?’” Rock asks. Key explains that he’s talking about Black people. “Well then say Black people!” Rock shouts. Look at the video embedded in this tweet. Watch @KeeganMKey and @chrisrock explain what to do if someone tries to stop you from voting (with @ColorofChange ) pic.twitter.com/BsT6yDLn30 — NowThis (@nowthisnews) November 1, 2018 The GOP—fearful of the impending Democratic blue wave—was  desperately using every trick in the book to retain control of Congress and state governments. Suppression efforts targeting Black voters  have already been seen in Georgia , where  Stacey Abrams  could make history as the first African-American woman governor. Voting rights advocates have been busy battling those efforts, including a  lawsuit against Georgia election officials for the unusually high rate  of absentee mail ballot rejections. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is one of the groups at the forefront of the battle. In addition to filing lawsuits and legal briefs on issues surrounding voting rights, the organization administers a hotline, 866-OUR-VOTE, year-round under the  Election Protection  coalition of advocacy groups. The hotline is a resource for voters throughout the nation who want to report complaints or obtain information to facilitate voting. A team of trained legal volunteers will receive the calls and answer any questions. Every eligible voter deserves an opportunity to participate in our democracy. If you experience problems voting, get LIVE help from a trained volunteer by calling #866-OUR-VOTE. #BeAVoter pic.twitter.com/FkBsbbIjLF — Lawyers' Committee 866-OUR-VOTE (@LawyersComm) November 2, 2018 In the video, Keys looks into the camera and informs viewers that they have a right to a provisional ballot if something goes wrong at the polls, such as poll workers unable to find their name on the voting rolls. This Is Why ‘L&HH’ Star Spice Decided To Fake Lighten Her Skin

View post:

Source: SPEX PHOTOGRAPHY, INC / SPEX PHOTOGRAPHY, INC   A week after Love & Hip Hop:Atlanta   star  Grace “Spice” Hamilton  came under fire for leading fans into believing she bleached her skin , the reality star is explaining what sparked her publicity stunt. On Instagram the dancehall musician stressed that she altered her appearance to make a powerful statement about a “taboo” topic: Colorism in the Black community . “I chose to do this in the manner I did because I believe Colorism is plagiarizing our black community,” she wrote. “While it appeared as if I had ‘bleached’ my skin, causing a world wide debate, and even though the picture was obviously birthed around my single titled ‘Black hypocrisy’ and my mixtape Captured.” She added, “There are dark skin women across the world complaining every day that they are being downplayed and degraded, but the raw truth is it is us ‘Black women’ and ‘Black men’ that are fighting against each other and tearing down our own race.” “It’s evident in the social media comments every day, I myself have lived through it all being downgraded by my dark complexion.” Spice also made sure she let everyone know that she did not bleach her skin and that she didn’t release that picture of herself clearly lighter skinned to merely sell records. “I want to openly say it was not a ‘publicity stunt.’ I wanted to create awareness to “Colorism” and it was more so done intentionally to create shock value so that I could have the worlds undivided attention to deliver the message in my music.” As we previously reported , Spice shocked her fans when she released the following picture: Spice’s controversial promotion raised eyebrows, but for good reason. Her first single is about the affects of colorism and how it could push someone to bleach their skin. “I get hate from my own race yes that’s a fact,” she raps. “Cause the same black people dem say I’m too black and if you bleach out you skin dem same one come a chat.” She has a point, just think of Michael Jackson, Vybez Kartel and Sammy Sosa. Drake Slams Vancouver Casino For Racially Profiling Him, Allegedly

Go here to read the rest:

Source: Jaime Espinoza / WENN Despite all the chart breaking hits and having a white mother, Drake can still get treated like “just another Black guy.” The 6 God took to Instagram to slam a Vancouver casino that he says racially profiled him.  The “Nonstop” rapper says he was just trying to get his gamble on, but Parq Vancouver Casino had different plans. “Parq Casino @parqvancouverbc is the worst run business I have ever witnessed … profiling me and not allowing me to gamble when I had everything they originally asked me for,” wrote the Boy on his IG story. Yahoo News , via CBC News, reports that the casino is “investigating” Drake’s allegations. Under new regulations, B.C. casinos need a “source of funds declaration” when depositing more than $10K to deter money laundering. Sounds like either Drake didn’t have his paperwork in order, or the casino couldn’t believe a Black guy had that much disposable dough. Or, the accounting department didn’t bother to do Google search. — Photo: WENN.com

‘Nobody’s Fool’ & 8 Other Movies To Watch With Your Sister

Source: gradyreese / Getty Having a sister is one of the coolest, most dramatic, loving, emotionally taxing experiences you can have in this life time. Having a sister is like having a built-in best friend, if you get along with them. Whether you’re sisters by blood, through marriage, sorority or friends who call themselves sisters, the bond is unlike any other human relationship. Even on the grander scheme of life, women are starting to band together more as a larger sisterhood, standing together against forces that try to tear us down —i.e. the male dominated government, entertainment industry, workforce, etc. Unity is key when it comes to sisterhood. Just ask Oprah who stressed the importance of sisterhood in her campaign speech for Georgia Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams . She proclaimed, “Only when we unite as sisters – and I don’t just mean ‘sistas’ – I mean sisters – black sisters, brown sisters, white sisters, Asian sisters, LGBTQ sisters. When we all unite, I know for sure a change is going to come.”   Tyler Perry tapped into the unbreakable bond of sisterhood with his latest film Nobody’s Fool starring Tika Sumpter and Tiffany Haddish as siblings with totally opposite morals, values and goals in life. Tiffany revealed to Bustle what it was like working with Tika, saying, “I feel like we knew each other in a past life, and we finally met up in this life, and we making money now girl! Because we was poor in the other life,” Haddish says. Sumpter laughs, and adds, “We was stomping roaches together.”   Don’t get us wrong — there are some downsides to having sisters that people without siblings can’t relate too. Like constantly being compared to them, the fights can get pretty catty and not to mention they steal your clothes. @WeeGeeFiji from Twitter tweeted, “The best thing about having 3 younger sisters is that we get to share everything from clothes to makeup which tbh is also the worst thing about having 3 sisters.” But the pros of being apart of a sisterhood can outweigh the bad. In the words of Cali Rae Turner, “The best thing about having a sister was that I always had a friend.”  Facts, Cali! Be sure to check out Nobody’s Fool hitting theaters this weekend, and hit the flip for more films that you and your sister should watch together.

Courts’ Crucial Rulings Against Voter Suppression Come Just Ahead Of The Midterm Elections

Follow this link:

V oting rights advocates were dealt several huge victories on Friday when courts rejected blatant attempts at suppressing mostly people of color from being able to cast ballots on Election Day. The rulings mean that thousands of people who had previously been deemed ineligible voters will now be able to register and go to the polls on Tuesday. In one key ruling on an obvious case of gerrymandering — or redrawing municipal boundaries along racial and political lines in order to impact elections — the North Carolina General Court of Justice, Superior Court Division decided in an injunction that “four districts in the North Carolina House of Representatives (Districts 36, 37, 40 and 41) violate the prohibition in the North Carolina Constitution on mid-decade redistricting,” the NAACP wrote in a press release. The NAACP has launched a number of similar lawsuits across the country trying to prevent voter suppression from taking place. “This is an important victory for the NAACP as we fight to ensure that communities of color have a full opportunity to elect representatives who will protect their interests in state legislatures across the country” Bradford M. Berry, NAACP General Counsel, said. The NAACP also teamed up with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law to win an injunction against voting technology that prevented 53,000 mostly African-American residents from registering to vote in Georgia. The ruling against the software, called Exact Match, “will directly affect about 3,100 applications,” the NAACP said. Also in Georgia, where Stacey Abrams was vying to become the nation’s first Black woman governor, a judge granted an injunction that could allow about 3,000 people previously denied voter registration over citizenship questions the ability to vote. The case was centered on new U.S. citizens. The case was a direct referendum on Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp , who, in a clear conflict of interest, was overseeing the election while he’s waging his own political campaign for governor against Abrams. BREAKING: We won! We have fully defeated Brian Kemp in our exact match lawsuit securing ALL relief we sought for voters. We’ll keep fighting to beat back voter suppression in #Midterms2018 . @LawyersComm pic.twitter.com/MZ7Kf1JZsc — Kristen Clarke 866-OUR-VOTE (@KristenClarkeJD) November 2, 2018 That ruling followed one on Tuesday  rejecting Kemp’s instructions to all local election officials to deny absentee ballots over signatures. Of course, there were still voter suppression efforts hard at play, even as the two rulings were handed down Friday. From the president’s new racist ad to voter intimidation tactics to the more than 50,000 people still fighting to register to vote in Georgia, there was still much work to be done for voting rights advocates. Friday’s rulings were a brief respite from that harsh reality. “From the time of Reconstruction and beforehand, opponents of a true democracy have attempted to silence and suppress Black political power, and each time we’ve stood strong and fought back – today is one of those times,” NAACP North Carolina State President Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman said in a statement. “We are committed to this fight of making democracy real for all of us and stand ready to do battle against those who seek to shrink this ideal.” SEE ALSO: The Power Of The Black Vote And How To Make Each One Count Vote Suppressor Brian Kemp Runs Away From Second Debate Against Stacey Abrams [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3834782″ overlay=”true”]
