From Oprah To Chance The Rapper, African-Americans Are Trying To Fight Hunger In Practical Ways

P eople across the globe were having a collective moment of raising awareness about the hunger crisis on Tuesday, which marked World Food Day. Hunger, inextricably linked to poverty, disproportionally affects African-Americans, motivating many Black folks to find practical ways to fight to end the crisis. RELATED: NYC Public School System Battles Childhood Hunger With Free Lunch To All Students Oprah Winfrey , who has long used her influence and celebrity status to call attention to human rights issues such as hunger, volunteered at the Freestore Foodbank in Cincinnati last month. The mogul partnered with retail company Kroger to attack hunger, WKRC , a CBS and CW affiliate, reported. “Every step to zero hunger in this country, this city, this world is a step in the right direction,” Winfrey said at the time, spotlighting an issue that the United Nations said it hoped to completely eradicate by 2030. The world produces enough food to feed everyone, yet 1 person in 9 suffers from chronic hunger. Black people are more than twice as likely to face hunger, according to Feeding America . That was widely connected to high poverty rates among Blacks — more than twice that of white, non-Hispanic households in 2017. With such a high poverty rate, it is no wonder why African Americans are trying to fight back. Volunteers, farmers, activists and celebrities alike are all using their power to make a difference to combat hunger. For instance, Chance the Rapper has played a role in trying to combat hunger in his native Chicago. The lyricist had teamed up with Lyft to donate $1 million to the city’s schools , and his gift can go a long way in helping provide breakfast and lunch for hungry students. T.I. also recently decided to pay for a year’s worth of school lunches for a teenager in Florida. A high school had reportedly denied food to the teen, Danielle Aiken because she was 15 cents short in August. Perhaps other rappers will also donate money for institutions in their home cities and help students afford school meals. The National School Lunch Program allows for 100,000 schools to serve school lunches to 30 million students each day. The program provides 20 million free lunches, 2 million reduced-price lunches in which students pay $0.40 each and 8 million full price lunches, according to the School Nutrition Association . If more people support families struggling to provide meals for their school-age children and global hunger efforts, then the UN’s goal of ending hunger in just 12 years could come true. Does Racism Affect Police-Community Relations? Black Chief Says No

P hiladelphia’s police commissioner, who’s Black, rejected a report released on Monday that said police racial bias was instrumental in the controversial arrest of two Black men at Starbucks in April. However, many studies point to implicit bias as an ongoing policing problem. SEE ALSO: Starbucks Incident Prompts Philadelphia Police Department To Finally Try De-escalation In Trespass Cases The Police Advisory Commission, comprised of a citizen oversight board, urged police officials to improve officer implicit bias training, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. “The goal for us was to help everyone understand that issues can be nuanced and tinged with race, or affected by race and racism, and the Police Department, often, is the person at the front lines of all of our issues,” said Hans Menos , executive director of the commission. That didn’t go over well with Philadelphia Commission Richard Ross , who pointed out in a statement that his department bans racially biased policing. “We can agree that biases, whether implicit or explicit, may distort the fears and perception of some citizens who call the police to report crimes,” he stated, shifting the blame to citizens who call the police for help. When they refused to leave, a store manager called the police, who led them out of the store in handcuffs. No charges were filed, and Starbucks profusely apologized for the incident. Starbucks also closed its stores in May for an afternoon of employee anti-bias training. Studies have determined that suspicion and fear of Black men underpin police brutality and make for disproportionate arrests. Unconsciously, white people perceive Black men as larger and more threatening than white men of the same build, according to the American Psychological Association . Stereotypes of Black men as habitual criminals and dangerous people are reinforced through the media, the American Bar Association said. A national survey found that whites overestimated the percentage of Blacks involved in burglaries, drug sales and juvenile crime by up to 30 percent. Police officers bring those attitudes with them, often unconsciously, when policing Black communities. Police departments across the nation are struggling to help their officers eliminate their bias. Such was the case when the Chicago MC got behind the wheel  as “John” and spoke to riders about his love of music, taking chances and charity.  Some passengers picked up who they were riding with right away, but most, not at all. The deception was for the worthiest of causes. If you use Round Up in the Lyft app the donated proceeds go to Chance’s the New Chance Fund which in turn supports Chicago Public Schools. And it’s legit, having recently announced they were blessing schools with even more money  specifically for mental health services. Watch the blessings below.

What’s Next In The Laquan McDonald Shooting Case? Here’s Everything We Know

See more here:

M any activists paying attention to the treatment of Laquan McDonald ‘s shooting know that this case is still ongoing. A guilty verdict has come against Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke  but other city department officers involved in the shooting were expected to soon face their judgment days. RELATED: ‘ Laquan McDonald Deserved Protection:’ National Black Police Association Reacts To Jason Van Dyke Conviction However, what will happen after Van Dyke’s moment of truth is rather clear: the 40-year-old man who jurors found guilty of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm after killing the 17-year-old teenager nearly four years ago will face countless years in prison. The former cop, who was being held in solitary lock up at Rock Island County Jail in Illinois, could be sentenced in excess of 96 years. He might be hit with consecutive six-year minimum sentences on each of 16 counts of aggravated battery and an additional consecutive prison term for whatever sentence Judge Vincent Gaughan hands down for his second-degree murder count, according to the Chicago Sun-Times . Van Dyke’s sentencing was scheduled for later this year, with much of the nation watching for the number of years of the prison term. While that was clear-cut, when the Chicago officers charged with conspiracy and covering-up facts in McDonald’s shooting will join him in prison was not yet clear. The next trial connected to Laquan McDonald's death will test the so-called “code of silence” in the Chicago Police Department https://t.co/ZNlZOFeirO — NYT National News (@NYTNational) October 10, 2018 The upcoming trial of three Chicago officer — former Detective David March , ex-Officer Joseph Walsh and Officer Thomas Gaffney — will put a magnifying glass on the hours and day after McDonald’s fatal shooting. Prosecutors will pick apart the officers’ stories during the proceeding, beginning on Nov. 26, in an effort to examine how fiction was sold as fact. March and Walsh, both now retired, played lead detective in the investigation and partner to Van Dyke, respectively. They, along with Gaffney, one of the first responding officers on that night Oct. 20, 2014, were charged with trying to shield Van Dyke from prosecution, blame and wrongdoing, which was shown via graphic dashcam video. Their defense couldn’t stop the wheels of justice in Van Dyke’s trial, which ended with him being held accountable for the unjustified killing. Activists have asked for March, Walsh and Gaffney to also be held accountable, as well as all other parties involved in the shooting. They want the blue wall of silence to come down. Aside from Van Dyke’s sentencing and the other officers’ trial, the Chicago Police Department will have to decide whether it will change how it interacts with Black communities. Trump’s Department of Justice may be vehemently opposing police reform but the demand and need for change won’t die down. The verdict in the Laquan McDonald case affirms the time is now for police to change how it interacts with Black communities. Cities across the US must implement strategies that change the way that police departments interact with Black communities. https://t.co/MrDZsBrFsT pic.twitter.com/MWTNyL6OSE — Shriver Center (@shrivercenter) October 14, 2018 SEE ALSO: Stacey Dash Reportedly Married Another Trump Worshiper Just 10 Days After They Met GOP Contender Seeking Al Franken’s Senate Seat Called Michelle Obama A ‘Chimp ‘ [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3831747″ overlay=”true”]
