So Sad: Kirk Franklin Mourns His Sister’s 30 Year Prison Sentence

Source: Erika Goldring / Getty Gospel artist Kirk Franklin is facing difficult times this week when he announced that his sister was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He revealed the news in an Instagram post saying “I now feel the weight of wondering if I could’ve done more…”   It’s not clear what caused his sister’s long sentence. However, Kirk has been pretty public about the struggles she’s faced, including an addiction to crack-cocaine. In a 2015 interview , Kirk said, “For over ten years, my younger sister was incarcerated in a facility here in Texas. She was in love with a young man who was drug dealer. He introduced her to not only selling drugs, but using as well. When he was arrested for drug trafficking, she was arrested along with him. After she served her time, she was brought before the review board who determined she was ready to be released and brought back into society. The documents were signed and she was set free… but only on paper.” Kirk continued, “After a few months back into the free world, it became obvious to me rather quickly that my sister was still in prison. It’s what they call being institutionalized. She quickly started using again, becoming very reckless with her body, which turned into her using it as a means to pay for her habit.” With more talk about prison reform and harsh sentencing , questions do arise on if Kirk’s sister deserved her 30 year sentence in the first place. Is it because of distributing drugs? Using? If she’s been committed to an institution before, shouldn’t her intervention be in the form of rehabilitation instead of prison? Kirk has yet to go into details about his next steps following the intense news, but we’ll continue to keep you updated if anything major should surface.

After news hit that Desus and Mero were  leaving their VICELAND show, the comedy duo has officially announced that they are going to Showtime, ending their two season run with their former network. According to The Hollywood Reporter , their gig at Showtime will be another late-night comedy with more illustrious guests and more off-the-cuff commentary on the latest news. However, instead of being a daily show like on VICELAND, their new show will have a weekly run. The 30-minute show will be Showtime’s first dive into late-night and it’s set to premiere in 2019. It will be executive produced by the Bronx heavyweights Desus Nice and The Kid Mero , as well as Victor Lopez. The big news is already attracted commentary on Twitter with many people excited for the new TV home, while others are wondering if they have the Showtime coins! Puma Has Relaunched Their Basketball Division, With Jay Z Joining As President

After major speculations about their return, the shoe and sportswear company has made it official by announcing the signings of top draft prospects including DeAndre Ayton (Arizona), Marvin Bagley III (Duke), and Zhaire Smith (Texas Tech). Ayton is considered the unanimous favorite to go No. 1 to the Phoenix Suns in Thursday’s draft, while Bagley and Smith are also expected to go in the lottery. On top of that news,  Jay Z  has joined as the company’s president of basketball operations. Adam Petrick , Puma’s global director of brand and marketing, told Complex : “We’ve been working with Roc Nation for quite some time. They’ve been great partners to us for several years. We’ve done many different deals with many different ambassadors.” When Puma approached him about this opportunity, Hov felt it “was something he wanted to be a part of,” according to Petrick. Mr. Carter will have a hand in the players selected to join Puma’s basketball division, along with assisting in the art design and overall concept and direction of the brand. “What’s important to him on a day like today is that it’s clear we’re making a serious push with players like Bagley and Ayton and Smith. We’re making a serious statement about the entry of the category, that we want to be a performance brand, but then also very culturally focused. It’s clear that we’re looking at basketball through the lens of culture, and thinking about the fashion of basketball, the music of basketball, all the aspects of culture around basketball as much as the on court presence that we will have,” Petrick continued.
