Perez, and Taurean C. Sanderlin. This is what Shaw had to say about his use of the GoFundMe money, “There are four families that are grieving right now. So much life was lost for no reason. I feel like it could be very selfish of me if I didn’t point it out. And I apologize.” The GoFundMe page had an initial ending goal of $15,000 but ended up receiving more than eleven times that amount after the story became national news and raised over $165K. Shaw continues,  “I did that completely out of a selfish act. I was completely doing it just to save myself. I don’t want people to think that I was the Terminator or Superman or anybody like that.” Even though he didn’t intend to be a hero, his actions are showing us otherwise.

Family Outraged That Prosecutor Declined To Charge Cops In Taser Death Of Mentally Ill Black Man

A dam Trammell ’s father is furious that the criminal justice system allowed two cops who repeatedly shocked his mentally ill son with stun guns last year will not face justice. SEE ALSO: Report: Most Victims Shot By Cops Are Mentally Ill Or In Crisis The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that there will be no charges against two police officers in the death of 22-year-old Trammell. District Attorney John Chisholm found “no basis to conclusively link Mr. [Adam] Trammell’s death to actions taken by police officers.” “This is a nightmare. I can’t believe this. I think those people should resign. The D.A. and the chief of that police department,” said Trammell’s father, Larry Trammell ,   according to USA Today . Two West Milwaukee police officers who “tortured Adam Trammell to death” will not be charged. Trammell, who was mentally ill, was naked in the shower when police broke down his door, tased him 18 times, broke his rib, and gave him a black eye. https://t.co/ABgDOk6Jf7 — Fair Punishment Project (@FairPunishment) April 27, 2018 The two officers responded to a call on May 25 at the apartment complex where Trammell lived. A neighbor was concerned that he was experiencing a psychotic episode. Another neighbor who lived in the unit below Trammell’s apartment told the officers that water was leaking through the ceiling. The cops broke down Trammell’s door and found him naked, taking a shower. Bodycam footage showed Trammell confused but calm when the cops confronted him. The officers used a Taser 15 times over a 30-minute period after he struggled to prevent them from taking him out the shower. Trammell ultimately lost consciousness, and the officers handcuffed him. He wasn’t breathing and had no pulse when the paramedics put him into the ambulance. Trammell was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital. “These police tortured Adam Trammell to death,” said Robin Shellow , a lawyer representing his family. “This was not ‘help.’ They were not protecting or serving anyone. Naked, cold, confused, alone in his own bathroom and crying for Jesus to take him, he needlessly suffered.” It’s no surprise that the cops are back on duty, without fear of prosecution. “If you are mentally ill and black, you already have two strikes against you if you come into contact with law enforcement,” wrote civil rights attorney Ben Crump , referring to the spate of high-profile police killings of mentally ill African Americans. In the article he wrote for CNN, Crump lamented a third strike, based on a U.S. Supreme Court decision on April 2. The justices ruled that an Arizona police officer who shot and killed a woman with a history of mental illness could not be sued. The court said the officer was entitled to qualified immunity. Under that legal doctrine, police are immune from excessive force lawsuits as long as they don’t violate “clearly established” rights that a “reasonable person would have known.” SEE ALSO: White House Spokeswoman Called ‘Uncle Tom’ At Correspondents’ Dinner Another Black Man Was Thrown Out Of A Restaurant For Just Sitting Down [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3440564″ overlay=”true”]

Statues Out Of The Sunken Place: Why Black Women Should Be Honored

Read more:

T he removal of several Confederate statues across the country has forced many Americans into a reckoning with race. This national examination has led to the idea of statues honoring Black women, who are underrepresented. For many activists, monuments celebrating African-American women are long overdue. These stories of certain African Americans should be put on full display through public fixtures, pro-Black monument advocates have said. A” reclaiming my time” moment has swept the nation into more rallies for change. Here are recent developments that are bringing hope that there will be more statues of Black women: Coretta Scott-King Bust Unveiled In Boston The New England Conservatory debuted a tribute to Scott-King Tuesday (April 24) in time for the civil rights icon’s birthday on Friday (April 27). Artist MacLean Tiffany designed the “Continuation Of A Dream” bust as a way to honor the activist’s human rights and social justice work at the school, which is King’s alma mater, Boston Magazine reported. It had been a fixture at a city park for 118 years. The statue featured a Black slave sitting at Foster’s feet with a banjo. “It’s the single most offensive display of public art in Pittsburgh, hands down,” Paradise Gray , a hip-hop activist, musician and writer, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in August. “It permanently depicts the Black man at the White man’s feet.” The city is looking to erect a Black women’s statue to replace Foster and is taking nominations. Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and many others would fit the bill. Memphis Takes Down Racist Confederate Monuments The city removed two racist statues under the cover of night after a heated debate last December. The removal of the statutes — one for Confederacy president Jefferson Davis and slave trader as well as KKK member Nathan Bedford Forrest —  was the culmination of months of protest work that pushed elected officials into action. Last year, Memphis TN, the city where MLK was killed, removed a statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a KKK leader and slaveowner. State lawmakers are now punishing the city by stripping away $250,000 in funding. #ConfederateMonuments This is America in 2018 https://t.co/Z99z0vvwlw — Kristen Clarke (@KristenClarkeJD) April 19, 2018 Events in Memphis, Pittsburgh and Boston will likely lead to more proposals for empowering statues. Video Shows Ex-NFL Player Choked, Slammed And Had His Teeth Knocked Out By Cops

B lack people must have their cell phones charged 24 hours a day to blast police brutality incidents. The latest in a nationwide string of damning police brutality videos posted to social media showed Georgia cops forcing a Black ex-NFL player to the ground like they were the featured primetime act on WrestleMania. The clip of Desmond Marrow’s  arrest posted on Facebook Thursday has folks’ anger at level 100, with the alarm being sounded once again across the country. First, three White Henry County officers choked and slammed Marrow, 30, in the head until he passed out. He cried and screamed that he couldn’t breathe to no avail, the video revealed. @ShaunKing …… smh pic.twitter.com/VfQEs7hF37 — E. Dewey Smith (@edeweysmith) April 26, 2018 Secondly, Marrow’s teeth were knocked out, he said on social media. The arrest was so violent that he also suffered a shoulder strain and a concussion. Thirdly, Marrow, listed on the preseason roster of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012, complied with officers’ demands during the arrest. He also told cops that he was not resisting, but they didn’t stop and one officer even warned him that he had a stun gun. “I’m not even doing nothing. I’m not even fighting back,” Marrow, who appeared to be handcuffed, said to the two officers who slammed him against a white pickup truck. One of the officers had Marrow’s arms behind his back, and the other officer pulled his legs out from under him before he was taken to the concrete. He struggled and screamed more as an officer pressed down on his throat. Marrow said Eric Garner ‘s last words, “I can’t breathe” but was still manhandled. Finally, cops conveniently used the mistaken identity defense in believing his cell phone was a gun like in Stephon Clark ‘s deadly shooting in Sacramento last month, according to The Washington Post . If there was a silver lining, it’s that Marrow didn’t suffer the same deadly fate as Clark and so many other unarmed Black men after interactions with White police officers. “I thought I was going to die. I was sure I was passing out or dying when Officer #D.Rose was choking me as my breath kept slipping away,” Marrow wrote. As to why cops arrested Marrow, they acted on suspicion after he was alleged to have played part in an altercation. Marrow was charged with terroristic threats, reckless driving and aggressive driving, according to Atlanta’s 11 Alive . No one should have to experience what Marrow went through with this beyond terrible arrest. The situation was especially traumatizing, he said. “This has affected me mentally and impacted my life in a way I can’t even humanly describe,” Marrow wrote on social media. “This isn’t a cry for sympathy, I just need it to be known . . . My cry is for JUSTICE.” SEE ALSO: Melanin Under Attack: Study Shows How Toxic Hair Products Are To Black Women Guilty On All Charges: Bill Cosby’s Prison Sentence Could End Up Being A Life Sentence [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3793345″ overlay=”true”]
