Bye, JD: These Female Emcees Have (Stripper-less) Bars For Days

See more here:

Source: Frederick M. Brown / Getty Looks like Jermaine Dupri has caused quite a stir on Al Gore’s internet. The music industry vet usually stays pretty low key, but as of late, he’s been a little more publicly vocal than usual. Earlier this week, JD chatted with People Now and dished on his feelings about the current state of female hip hop. “I feel like they’re all rapping about the same thing. I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. For me, it’s, like, strippers rapping. At some point, somebody is going to have to break out of that mold.” Boy oh boy, did that strike a nerve. Many people assumed that JD was talking about Cardi B when he made the comment, and apparently so did she. The stripper turned rapper went off on Dupri during an Instagram Live session on Thursday. “First of all, I rap about my p— because she’s my best friend and second of all it’s because it seems like that’s what people want to hear. When I did ‘Be Careful‘ people was talking mad s— in the beginning like ‘What the f— is this?’ ‘This is not what I was expecting” She went on to name a slew of female emcees that don’t rap about “vajayjays” and stripping. “I feel we need to put these girls in more magazines and blogs. Radio DJs play these girls. These girls can rap they asses off and they don’t rap about their vaginas and sucking d—.” View this post on Instagram SUPPORT SUPPORT SUPPORT A post shared by MOSTHATEDCARDI (@iamcardib) on Jul 11, 2019 at 1:48pm PDT   And Cardi has a point. You’d think that someone has seasoned as JD would do a little more research before discrediting an entire demographic of artists. But this just further proves that some folks are just out of touch with what’s going on today. But don’t worry JD, we got you. Hit the flip for a list of DOPE female rappers whose subject matter will literally blow your mind.

According to The Blast , the DJ filed a federal lawsuit against the women after they abruptly fired her. Spinderella, whose real name is Deidra Roper is suing Pepa (Sandra Denton) and Salt (Cheryl James.) The lawsuit states that the group started recording and performing in the mid-1980s. Spinderella says she helped create the success of the group. Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). Even though the band went into hiatus in the late 90’s, Spinderella continued promoting the band. But things took a turn in the early 2000s when she discovered there was a “best of” compilation album being released. Spinderella said Pepa told her that she would pay her $125,000 but that never happened. “By the early 2000s, the Defendants discussed with Roper an SNP reunion which would have possibly involved, among other things, a television show based on the legendary female group’s rise to stardom.” DJ Spinderella claims that she was promised a third of the group’s profits from the reality show. While she was featured on the show, she has yet to be paid. According to The Jasmine Brand , this lawsuit is a long-time coming. Super Beauty Founder TiffanyJ Aims To Empower Black Youth Through Book Series And Doll Line

Read the original post:

N avigating adolescence was an uphill battle for South Carolina-bred entrepreneur TiffanyJ . The pressures of fitting in with her peers, her ongoing struggle with low self-esteem and depression and dealing with the complexities of a torn family that had been ravaged by divorce led to her first suicide attempt at 12 years old. Sadly, stories similar to TiffanyJ’s have become far too common amongst Black youth today. According to a study released by JAMA Pediatrics , the suicide rate for Black children is twice the rate of whites. Further research revealed that the suicide rate amongst Black girls between the ages of 13 and 19 increased by 182 percent between 2001 and 2017. While the experiences of Black youth are not monolithic and there are several different factors that come into play that shapes their lives, the alarming trend must be addressed. TiffanyJ is on a mission to prevent other Black children from becoming statistics and has been dedicated to using her creativity and artistry as a source of empowerment through her brand Super Beauty . The music artist, motivational speaker and business owner has always been passionate about using her own experiences to help others heal from their trauma. As a teen, she coped with her depression by turning to songwriting. In adulthood, she continues to utilize her creativity to heal. In 2018, she launched the Super Beauty doll line. The plush doll was created to empower Black girls who have found themselves in the same shoes that TiffanyJ was in as a child. Designed to help youngsters overcome depression and other forms of mental illness, the doll says over 20 positive phrases of upliftment. The Super Beauty mascot travels around the country to speak to young girls at schools, churches, and camps. For TiffanyJ, it’s all about representation. “The most rewarding thing about this journey is the responses that I get from what I’ve created. I can honestly say it has been an overwhelming flood of positivity. The joy people get has been the best part of it. It’s confirmation that you’re operating in your purpose,” she told NewsOne. “There is one girl that has every piece of merchandise that we’ve ever sold. She ran up to me at a festival with so much joy. Those types of interactions keep me inspired and motivated.” In 2019, the entrepreneur has taken her brand to new levels. Continuing her mission of empowerment, in February she launched a book called ABCs for the Culture which aims to teach youth about Black history. The book features Black facts from A through Z; some of which won’t be found in regular school curriculums. In the book, “B” stands for the Black Power Movement, “N” is for natural hair, and “S” is for soul. “Paying homage to Black history and culture and sharing our culture with others so they understand the richness of being Black was my ultimate mission. I wanted to inspire and empower our children to be proud and unapologetically Black,” she said. Source: TiffanyJ / TiffanyJ As far as what’s on the horizon for TiffanyJ and the Super Beauty brand, she plans on creating more books and dolls. She also wants to create Super Beauty bedroom decor and coloring books. Cognizant of the struggles faced by Black boys TiffanyJ is developing a character named Handsome Hero so they see themselves reflected. All in all, the entrepreneur wants to continue to help Black youth overcome depression. “Mental health is such a taboo in our community and that’s our biggest hurdle. We have to start showing people that it’s definitely okay to not be okay and we can’t shame them into silence,” she said. “Sharing your story is really powerful. It builds a sense of community and lets individuals know that they’re not alone.” SEE ALSO: Entrepreneur Creates Line Of Dolls To Help Black Girls Who Suffer From Depression Healthy Roots Dolls Empower Black Girls To Embrace Their Natural Hair [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3881857″ overlay=”true”]

HBCU Puts Focus On Mental Health So Students Can Thrive Academically

Read the original here:

A Texas-based historically Black college is ensuring that all of its students have the support and resources needed to overcome trauma developed from past experiences. According to Dallas News , Paul Quinn College has launched a mental health campaign to help students address internal obstacles so they can thrive academically. Paul Quinn College is taking a progressive approach to mental health that leaves no student behind. #StudentHealth #News https://t.co/BOuhKi2O84 — The Fix (@_TheFix) July 10, 2019 At one point the school had one of the lowest graduation rates in the country and that prompted faculty members to get to the root of the issue. With the help of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, they discovered that the core of the problem was trauma and many of the students were suffering from PTSD. Students were carrying the emotional burdens of tragic past experiences from their upbringings and environments and some were carrying the weight of being first-generation college students on their shoulders. “We thought we were doing good,” said Paul Quinn College president Michael Sorrell . “‘We’re bringing you out of that environment and you’ll be safe. And life will be great.’ … It took us a while to understand that that was a product of trauma.” With a grant given to the school by Gov. Greg Abbott , the institution has been able to launch several programs and initiatives under its campaign. Incoming freshman and transfer students have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a counselor and the school has an on-campus mental health center which is overseen by Dr. Stacia’ Alexander . The center is decorated with images of celebrities who have been transparent about their struggles with mental health so that the students can see themselves reflected. “The thing we’re trying to get students to understand is that those traumas are real,” Dr. Alexander told the news outlet. “And they do impair or affect how you process daily information. And if you continue to ignore that, you’re going to continue to be impaired and not reach your full potential.” In addition to the counseling, there are several wellness and fitness activities that take place on campus. Initiatives like the one being led at Paul Quinn College are needed. Studies show that over 20 percent of incoming college students have battled with mental health disorders. SEE ALSO: Taraji P.
