‘While Black’ Podcast Captures The Essence Of Being Black In America

Originally posted here:

I n 2014 the senseless murder of Mike Brown shook the nation. It was that tragic incident where many people, including While Black podcast creator Vince , came to the realization that the string of fatal police-related shootings happening throughout the country were far from being isolated situations and the ugly truths about racism in America were being brought to the forefront. While watching news coverage of the unrest that was unraveling in Ferguson following the 18-year-old’s death, alongside some of his white colleagues at work, Vince couldn’t help but notice how disconnected they were. The detachment and disregard left him feeling unsettled, forgotten, and invisible. He couldn’t wrap his mind around the fact that one could be so detached from an incident that impacted the entire country. He also was appalled by what he says were inaccurate narratives surrounding Brown and what took place that were being perpetuated by the media. It was in this moment where he realized he needed to become a voice for his community and utilize his platform to enlighten folks on what it’s like to be Black in America. After years of using his social media platforms as an avenue to inform and ignite crucial conversations about social and political issues as they relate to the Black community, in 2018 Vince decided to launch the podcast While Black . The name stemmed from the James Baldwin quote “To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.” He also pulled his inspiration from gems dropped by the late rapper Tupac Shakur about racial and economic inequality in America. “I have an obligation to reach across this color isle and begin to inform white America of what it is to be Black in America. My social channels have a diverse audience and I understood the influence of my reach. I turned my social media feed and my platform into a social justice lightning rod,” Vince told NewsOne. Going beyond the mission of giving individuals insight into the complexities of being Black in America, he also wanted to use the platform to close the knowledge and education gaps within the Black community. “I’m trying to create a platform that can use entertainment and fun to educate us on things that we truly need to be educated on. Whether it is correcting misconceptions, whether it is providing awareness, or whether it is providing additional education or inspiration. I find topics where I feel like there could be gaps within the African American community and I try to fill them.” Cognizant of the fact that the Black experience in America isn’t monolithic, Vince and his cohost Art feature a wide spectrum of guests who are experts in different spaces. From rappers to doctors and wealth building to parenting, the podcast covers a large range of topics. Source: While Black Podcast He says some of the most memorable guests that have been featured on the podcast include musician Okorie “OkCello” Johnson and Black activist Kimoni Sadiq . “Every episode will be with someone who has expertise or credibility in a space. Whether you agree with them or not, it’s thought-provoking, based on reality and provides you with something to chew on.” For Vince, While Black is all about educating and empowering the Black community to take control of their narratives. He also hopes that the moves he’s made with the podcast inspires other Black creators to break into the world of podcasting and often uses his platform to highlight other African American podcasters. Representation is needed in the podcast space. Although more Black podcasts are being created, research shows that hosts are predominately white and male. He says increasing the representation of Black podcast listeners and creators starts with “reminding and reassuring individuals that their perspectives add value to conversations.” As far as what’s on the horizon for the podcast, While Black is partnering with Apple which has one of the world’s largest platforms for podcast discovery and listenership. When asked about what he loves about being Black, Vince replied “We are a culture of people who are constantly evolving. We continue to push into areas and things that most of the world would say we have no business doing. There’s been this awakening inside of us to embody Black, to exude Black, to embrace Black, to codeswitch less, and to not be afraid to be in our own skin.” SEE ALSO: The Obamas Sign Deal With Spotify To Produce Podcasts Entrepreneur Launches Coupon Platform To Support Black-Owned Businesses [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3889769″ overlay=”true”]

“Girl, You’re Gangster”: Rihanna Defends The ‘Vogue’ Writer Who Got Major Backlash For Winging Their Interview

Source: James Devaney / Getty Rihanna Stands Behind The Writer Who Interviewed Her For Vogue Rihanna is a woman of the people, so she’s not here for all of the slander Abby Aguirre–the writer behind her latest Vogue cover story–is facing. After the profile was published, the reporter was bombarded with backlash over her confession that she had gone into the interview without any questions prepared. Here’s the excerpt from the story that had everyone up in arms: ‘Normally I bring a list of questions, but I didn’t have time to prepare one, which I make a split-second decision to confess. “I’m winging it, so you have to help me,” I say nervously. Rihanna flashes a grin that is somehow both reassuring and mischievous. “Aren’t we all?” she says.’ When reading this sentence out of context, it’s easy to see why people are upset: How could you NOT be prepared for an interview with Rihanna? And better yet, why would you ADMIT that to her…and then, on top of it, publish that admission within the article?! Here’s what Aguirre had to say when the backlash initially started pouring in: GUYS. I was driving to Trader Joe's in sweatpants when I got the call and literally had to flip a bitch. I research my subjects to death. *Especially* Rihanna. I appreciate the anger behind the reaction. But this is a misunderstanding, for which I take full responsibility. — Abby Aguirre (@abby_aguirre) October 9, 2019 I had literally no notice. The point was to convey how nerve-wracking this was, given my deep, bordering-on-psychotic reverence for Rihanna. — Abby Aguirre (@abby_aguirre) October 9, 2019 There are still a lot of folks who aren’t okay with her explanation, for a lot of reasons, but as for Rihanna, she came to the writer’s defense once she was alerted of the goings on. “Wait, wait, what?” Rih told WWD   when asked about the criticism of Aguirre’s interview. “No, no, no, no. That’s gangster. For you to get a call the day before being like, ‘Hey, Rihanna’s in L.A., you wanna do this?’ And show up on the dime and write an incredible article that I’m really proud of and enjoyed reading? She’s badass for that.” The mogul went on to say, “If you don’t have to prepare, girl, you’re gangster.”

Kanye Has Pop-Up Sunday Service At Howard Homecoming, Spews Sunken Slavery Comments AGAIN

Source: Photo by Johnny Nunez/WireImage  Kanye Has Sunday Service At Howard University Kanye is back at it again and surprisingly one of the most illustrious HBCUs in the country is giving him a stage. On Saturday Kanye surprised Howard University students and alumni with a pop-up Sunday Service during their (#HUHC19) homecoming celebration. The news was shared via Howard’s official social media channels… Kanye West brought Sunday Service to #HowardHomecoming . Get here now to enjoy the show. #HUHC19 pic.twitter.com/WA52Fwhmz6 — Howard University (@HowardU) October 12, 2019 and people flooded the yard to get a look at Ye who brought Kim Kardashian, North, and Saint West along for the ride. DC Howard University ready #SundayService pic.twitter.com/xuEZBZpca1 — Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) October 12, 2019 Kanye also made some comments, he first denied being “cancelled”… “I was in debt, I was in the mental hospital, I was canceled but the power belongs to God. As we stand here right in the yard of Howard University, does this look like canceled to you?” and (once again) ranted about slavery. “Next time the slave nets come out, lets all try and not stand in one place,” said Kanye who previously ranted that “slavery was a choice.” Kanye said “if they throwing slave nets again how about we all don’t stand in the same place” and the guitarists face fucking sends me akskksksksskskdj pic.twitter.com/BZOoFjFzXJ — (@asia__vu) October 12, 2019 Yeah, is this STILL y’alls King? While some people were ecstatic to see Ye at The Mecca, others are rightfully pissed that Howard administration let bigot supporting Kanye on campus. If you’re not intelligent enough to recognize that Kanye West is exploiting Black Christian culture AND Howard University to rebrand from supporting a racist, xenophobic con artist… please stay away from me. — Ammon (@AmmonLyle) October 12, 2019 Howard students stopped white folks from walking dogs on the campus, but let Kanye carry on his anti-Blackness in a sacred Black space? Come on y’all. — Aisha Alexander (@AishaThinker) October 12, 2019 What do YOU think about Kanye having Sunday Service at Howard??? More on the flip.

#AtatianaJefferson Black Woman Fatally Shot By White Police Officer In Her Own Home

This is Atatiana Jefferson. She was 28 yrs old, a graduate of Xavier Univ. and lived w/ her nephew. A Fort Worth, TX cop shot and killed her thru her window as she stood peacefully and unarmed in her own home. Black people are subject to deadly force even when they stay home. pic.twitter.com/09dA2nl3v5 — Kristen Clarke (@KristenClarkeJD) October 13, 2019 Atatiana Jefferson Killed By White Police Officer In Her Home The death of a black woman minding her business in her home before being killed by police is causing Botham Jean comparisons. Atatiana Koquice Jefferson, 28, died Saturday after a Forth Worth, Texas officer opened fire on her inside her house. NBC Dallas-Forth Worth reports that a neighbor called the police to report that Jefferson’s door was open. An officer who arrived on the scene peered into Atatiana’s window and spotted her and yelled, “Put your hands up — show me your hands,” before opening fire and shooting her. The young woman was shot once and although aid was rendered she was pronounced dead. The officer who killed Atatiana has yet to be identified but authorities tell NBC he’s on administrative leave pending an investigation. He’s also been confirmed as white. Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price released a statement on the shooting. “Writing a statement like this is tragic and something that should never be necessary. A young woman has lost her life, leaving her family in unbelievable grief. All of Fort Worth must surround Atatiana Jefferson’s family with prayers, love and support,” Price said. Mayor Price has promised a “complete and thorough investigation” to be conducted by Police Chief Ed Kraus, which will then be forwarded to the Tarrant County District Attorney Law Enforcement Incident Team. This is so incredibly tragic and sad. We’re thinking of the family and friends of Atatiana who lost their loved one for absolutely no reason.
