Amber Johnson Becomes First Black Woman To Earn A Ph.D. In Computer Science From Purdue

B lack scholars across the country are displaying excellence and making history in the process. According to WLFI , Amber Johnson recently became the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in computer science at Purdue University. She received her first computer before she turned 10 and enjoyed fixing tech gadgets. She took her love for tech into adulthood and earned an undergraduate degree in computer science from LeMoyne-Owen College and her master’s degree from Jackson State. While pursuing her Ph.D. in computer science at Purdue she was mentored by Dr. Raquel Hill  who was the first Black woman to earn a computer science Ph.D. from Harvard 17 years ago. Dr. Hill hooded Johnson during her graduation ceremony. For Johnson, representation in STEM is important. She is using her journey as an avenue to inspire others; similar to how Dr. Hill inspired her to break barriers in computer science. “I don’t look the stereotypical computer scientist,” she told The Exponent in a statement. “You don’t find many black women in this academic space. This is what computer science can look like.” Outside of her studies, Johnson has been dedicated to paying it forward and empowering the next generation of tech leaders. She volunteers with Black Girls Rock Tech and Girls Who Code. As far as her next chapter, Johnson will serve as a software engineer at Northrup Grumman; a company focused on defense and aerospace technology. Dallas Police Bodycam Footage Shows Officers Mocking Man As He Dies [VIDEO]

Footage has bee released from a 2016 case of a Dallas man dying while being arrested by police. Tony Timpa, 32, died after authorities pinned him to the ground in the controversial “prone position” with his face in the ground and a knee in his back. The Dallas News obtained the footage of Timpa’s final moments after a three-year records fight. A federal judge finally ruled Monday in favor of a motion by The News and NBC5 to release records from his death, saying “the public has a compelling interest in understanding what truly took place during a fatal exchange between a citizen and law enforcement.” Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). In the footage, Timpa who called for help in August 2016 because he suffered from schizophrenia and depression and was off his meds, is seen being aggressively pinned down. He tells authorities he can’t breathe and wails, “you’re gonna kill me,” as he lays pinned down for 13-minutes. Authorities alleged that the pinning was necessary to keep the man from rolling into the street. As he lay dying, officers then mock Timpa and claim they hear him snoring. “It’s time for school. Wake up!” says one in the video obtained by The Dallas News. “I don’t want to go to school! Five more minutes, Mom!” another replied, mocking the now dead man. “He didn’t just die down there, did he?” one asks after noticing that Timpa was lifeless. [ Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Email Submit The Dallas News reports that officers Kevin Mansell, Danny Vasquez, and Dustin Dillard were indicted by a grand jury in 2017 on charges of misdemeanor deadly conduct and a grand jury’s indictment stated that the “officers engaged in reckless conduct that placed Timpa in imminent danger of serious bodily injury.” But in March, Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot dismissed the charges saying that medical examiners did not believe the officers acted recklessly and “cannot, and will not, testify to the elements of the indictment beyond a reasonable doubt.” Watch the disturbing video here . Big Sean To Make His Acting Debut In Lena Waithe’s Forthcoming Series “Twenties”

Source: Timothy Hiatt / Getty Media powerhouse Lena Waithe is bringing more fire to the small screen with her new series, “Twenties.” The comedy is set in Los Angeles and follows a group of 20-somethings as they navigate life, work and love. Lena explained she wrote the series in her twenties and it is loosely based on her own life. The show, which is set to premiere on BET in 2020, includes an all-star cast including “JoJo” T. Gibbs, Christina Elmore, Gabrielle Graham and Sophina Brown. Rapper Big Sean will make his acting debut on the show, Variety reports. “It really is a figment of my imagination,” Waithe told Variety. “But I’m pulling little things about my drive, my hunger, and the frustrations that come with the business [that can be relatable to anyone].” Lena took to Instagram to announce the show and her excitement around Big Sean’s involvement in the project. “What you think about, you bring about. #Twenties has been a project I’ve been dreaming about for as long as I can remember. Marvel Has Reportedly Found Its Villain for ‘Black Panther 2’

Source: Marvel Studios / Marvel Studios A few weeks ago at San Diego’s Comic Con Marvel revealed it’s movie slate for MCU’s phase 4 which included some highly anticipated projects including Blade starring Mahershala Ali as the vampire killing Daywalker and Thor 4, but noticeably absent was any mention of the sequel to everyone’s favorite Black superhero, Black Panther 2 . Though we know it’s definitely happening and director Ryan Coogler is penning the script, we haven’t gotten much else other than rumors about Killmonger possibly returning to Wakanda (Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige basically shot that rumor down recently). While official word on Black Panther 2 remains scarce, We Got This Covered is reporting that the villain for the highly anticipated sequel has been nailed down and it’s none other than the merman known as Namor.  The Sub-Mariner will be T’Challa’s main antagonist when we all return to Wakanda for the next adventure. According to our sources – the same ones who told us that the real Mandarin will appear in Shang-Chi and Taskmaster will be the villain inBlack Widow, both of which were later confirmed by Marvel – the studio has chosen Namor to be the main antagonist of Black Panther 2. The specifics of his role are still a bit unclear, but like we said above, the sequel will see him trying to take control of Wakanda and become its ruler. As with any scoop of this kind, we imagine Marvel may deny it publicly as they so often do, but as we mentioned above, our sources are usually pretty reliable, so we feel fully confident in their intel. And while things can always change in the development process given how early on it still is, for now, it seems that Namor will finally be making his big screen debut in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 2 . This shouldn’t come as a surprise as rabbit-eared fans caught the easter egg in Avengers: Endgame when Okoye mentioned underwater earthquakes off the coast of Africa. Could it be the city of Atlantis readying to make its presence known to the world? We don’t know but fans were quick to point out the possibility and that Namor would soon be joining Marvel’s cinematic universe. Though Marvel hasn’t confirmed the news We Got This Covered is also reporting that they’re eyeing Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding to take on the role of the hotheaded anti-hero. No word yet on when Black Panther 2 will be making its way into theaters but rumors have it dropping November of 2021 or February 2022. Either way, we can’t wait.

#BlackGirlMagic: Simone Manuel Becomes First Woman To Win 7 Medals In World Championship

This time around, she has become the first woman to take home a whopping seven medals at one single World Championships. According to SwimSwam.com , on July 26  in Tokyo, Manuel won four golds and three silvers throughout the week, including being the first American woman to win the 50 and 100 freestyle last Sunday. In addition, the 23-year-old Houston native was on the “winning mixed 4×100 medley relay, then took silver on the women’s 4×200 free relay and 4×100 free relay, and mixed 4×100 free relay.”   Despite breaking records, a humble Simone wrote On Twitter: “By no means was this a perfect meet, but that’s okay. I had to bounce back from adversity and trust in God’s plan. Failure isn’t final IF you stay the course and keep fighting. I’m pretty dang proud of myself. All glory to God. Day 2 Of A$AP Rocky Trial Featured Testimony From Both Sides

Source: Andrew Chin / Getty A$AP Rocky has concluded the second day of his ongoing trial in Sweden with testimony from himself and the alleged victim, Mustafa Jafari. New video evidence has also been produced, which shows one of Rocky’s bodyguards brutally choke-slamming Jafari. The Blast reports : The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet has a reporter, Adam Westin, inside the courtroom for the second day of the trial who has been providing minute-by-minute updates. According to Westin (and Google Translate), when A$AP took the stand, he explained that he and his friends just wanted to walk around Sweden, get some air, and check out the sites. He said things were going well and they even took electric scooters to help get around. He said people started to approach his security guard but A$AP didn’t pay much attention and the security guard asked them to leave. Next thing A$AP knows, the security guard grabs the alleged victim by the collar and moves him out of the way. A$AP said the situation was a little scary and he said he “assumed that these guys were under the influence of some kind of drug.” Reports have recently surfaced that the 19-year-old Jafari had a record of assault, theft, and drug possession. In his testimony, Jafari claims he encountered Rocky and his team outside a burger joint and asked them if they saw a friend of his. From there, a verbal altercation allegedly occurred which ended with Jafari catching blows from Rocky and his security team. — Photo: Getty

Brazil Prison Riot Leaves 16 People Decapitated

Source: BRUNO SANTOS / Getty Most New Yorkers are familiar with the horror stories that revolve around the infamous Rikers Island jail complex and the corruption it entails, but at least it isn’t a Brazilian prison. CNN is reporting that a wild prison riot went down in Brazil’s Regional Recovery Center at 7am when a local gang “stormed” a wing in the facility and began a brouhaha that lasted several hours. After the smoke had cleared 57 people had been murdered and while the majority of them were believed to have been killed by asphyxiation, 16 of the victims were found decapitated. Ten of the 16 prisoners who were blamed for instigating the violence will be transferred to federal penitentiaries, state media reported, citing local authorities. More than 46 other prisoners will be moved to other prisons in Para. The incident is the latest outbreak of deadly violence in recent months to have taken place in Brazil’s often overcrowded and underfunded prison system. The local prison authorities said at the time the deaths were a result of violent clashes among rival factions within the same drug gang, known as the Family of the North. Cops Called To Beyoncé And Jay-Z’s Home Due To Uninvited Visitor

Source: Theo Wargo / Getty An uninvited visitor to Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Hamptons home landed them in Page Six , in an incident the tabloid dubbed possibly the “best prank of the summer.” Apparently cops were called the Carter’s Hamptons crib after a stranger arrived at the home, pressed the talk button on the security system and said he was there to see someone whose name was omitted from the report. Security told him to leave then called the police, who found the caller outside another home in the neighborhood where he was able to explain himself. The East Hampton Star published the following from local police logs: Officers were called to a house on Briar Patch Road on Saturday at about 12:30 a.m. after a stranger told security guards he had been invited to the house, which is owned by Beyoncé and Jay-Z. The man had pushed the talk button on the driveway keypad and said he was looking for someone, whose name was redacted from the report. He left the area, but police found him a few driveways away, using a photograph sent to them by the security guards. The man said a friend had invited him to the house and must have been playing a joke. Police escorted him to the East Hampton train station. “Escorted” to the East Hampton train station sounds like it could have gone either way — nice gesture by the cops OR forcible removal.
