Serena Williams Becomes Second Black Woman Tennis Player To Grace Wheaties Box

T ennis star Serena Williams is making historic moves on and off the court. Just weeks after becoming the first athlete to land a spot on Forbes’ list of the world’s richest self-made women, the Compton native now has her own Wheaties box; making her the second Black woman tennis player in history to be the face of the cereal brand, the Undefeated reported. Serena Williams is finally gracing the cover of Wheaties. https://t.co/jGC0LUiRlM pic.twitter.com/qTFb0SrhoG — The Undefeated (@TheUndefeated) June 28, 2019 Gracing the cover of a Wheaties box is a pinnacle for many athletes. The cereal brand—known as the “breakfast of champions”—has been featuring influential athletes on their boxes for 85 years. The leadership team at Wheaties believed that it would be fitting to feature Williams on the box because her impact transcends far beyond the tennis court. Williams has been a fierce advocate for social justice. Over the course of her career, she’s utilized her platform to spread awareness about gender equality and racial injustice. “Serena exemplifies all of the personal attributes that Wheaties looks for when choosing who its next champion will be,” Wheaties marketing manager Tiffani Daniels , said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “On the court she has been named the women’s most valuable player seven times, while off the court she uses her voice to inspire and spark change to make the world a better place.” Williams was humbled by the honor and took to Instagram to express her excitement. She says that being featured on the Wheaties box illustrates the importance of representation. “I have dreamt of this since I was a young woman,” she stated. “I hope my image on this iconic orange box will inspire the next generation of girls and athletes to dream big.” The decorated athlete—who has four Olympic medals and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles under her belt—joins a group of influential Black women athletes who have been featured on the box. Those who have graced the box include tennis player Althea Gibson , track and field star Jackie Joyner-Kersee , and gymnast Dominique Dawes . Williams is not only opening doors for women and girls who want to pursue careers in sports, she’s giving aspiring women entrepreneurs a seat at the venture capital table. In March she joined forces with the app Bumble to invest in women of color entrepreneurs. Nipsey Hussle’s Daughter Honors Him At Her Graduation

Source: Adriana M. Barraza/WENN.com / WENN Nipsey Hussle ’s daughter Emani Asghedom has endured a tragedy that no child should have to: burying her father. The 10-year-old recently graduated and though her father wasn’t there physically, she made sure to honor in during her speech. “I want to begin by sharing my thankfulness for my mom for believing in me, and my dad, for always being there for me,” Emani said. Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). After losing her father back in March, her uncle, known as Blacc Sam, and her aunt Samantha Smith, were involved in a custody battle with her mother, Tanisha Foster. They are claiming that Foster cannot provide a fit environment for Emani and isn’t able to provide adequate care. According to TMZ, Nipsey Hussle’s family claims that Foster has an 18-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son that she hasn’t raised, which they feel further proves their point about Foster not being able to provide a stable home for Emani. Despite all the family drama, Emani was all smiles on her big day with all of her family in attendance. Jackson State University Student Creates Straw That Filters Lead

F or Jackson State University graduate student LaMonté Pierce what started out as a class project focused on addressing an issue faced by communities in Mississippi led to the creation of a product designed to combat lead poisoning in water, WJTV reported. The JSU graduate student has received impressive offers from big retailers like Walmart which offered to sell CleanStraww in nearly 4,000 stores. https://t.co/0R8Zxwu4Tj — Lanaya Lewis (@LanayaLewis) June 20, 2019 Pierce and other students that he collaborated with decided to use the assignment as an avenue to address water contamination impacting the City of Jackson. They designed a straw that could be used to filter water. Pierce and his classmate Andrew Willis decided to go beyond the project and continue to do research and testing to turn the straw into a product that would be a catalyst in addressing water contamination in communities across the globe. Pierce’s efforts led to the creation of Cleanstraww . The straws are made of non-toxic materials and has a three-step filtering process which divides sediment and particles from water. He utilized a 3-D printer for the creation of the straw. “I saw somewhere they were drinking out of toilets, they were drinking from the river, different things like that. They use simple filters that you can find in everyday filters, but the thing was they did not filter out lead. If we can filter out lead, we can pretty much filter out anything,” he told the news outlet. “Take the responsibility of clean water directly out of the government, state and city officials hands and put it in the hands of the consumers. If you want clean water, here you go.” Several national retailers have expressed interest in selling his product, including Walmart. Pierce hopes that he can find investors for his product to grow his business and create more jobs in Mississippi. Products like Cleanstraww are needed. According to CBS News , lead in America’s water systems has become a growing national crisis. High School Seniors Host Prom At Hospital For Student Battling Cancer

W hen a group of high school seniors from New York learned that their classmate Ilijah Barron would be missing prom due to his ongoing battle with bone cancer, they were determined to make sure that he could experience the special day. Since Barron was unable to attend prom, the Liverpool High School students joined forces and organized a celebration for him at the hospital, Syracuse.com reported. Liverpool senior ball comes to hospital for student battling cancer (video, photos) https://t.co/nxBjn7dsJv — syracuse.com (@syracusedotcom) June 22, 2019 The 19-year-old was diagnosed with a bone cancer called osteosarcoma. This rare disease typically impacts the arm and leg bones. Prior to his diagnosis, Barron played on the varsity football team. Two years ago, he began experiencing severe pain in his legs. Initially many people thought the pain was a result of playing sports, but after several tests doctors discovered a tumor in one of his legs. He was diagnosed in February and has been in and out of the hospital ever since. Barron was planning on going to his senior ball but ended up in the hospital two days before the event. With the help of his mother Nelisha , his friends were able to organize a prom celebration for Barron at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. They all dressed up in gowns and suits and transformed the 11th floor of the hospital into the perfect backdrop for a prom celebration. The group listened to music and ate food from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. Barron was moved to tears by the effort made by his friends to make sure that he would be able to experience prom. “I loved it,” he told the news outlet. “It was the most special moment ever. Having everybody there, all my friends. And it was my first high school dance.” Barron is not letting cancer get in the way of what he wants to accomplish. He still supports his school’s football team and has continued to excel academically. “I never sat down and said, ‘Why me?’” he said in a statement , after being named a Young and Amazing award recipient. “There’s no point in that, because it was only going to hurt me in the long run. Staying mentally positive about it came easier.” SEE ALSO: Black Teacher Gives Students Haircuts For Graduation Black-Owned Barbershop Pays Off Debt For Students In Charlotte [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3880863″ overlay=”true”]

When asked about the numerous new incidents of tourists dying Johnson says,” “I think now that looking at the other incidents that it definitely [is] something deeper and sheds on their health care practices,” Johnson told The Post. “It’s not like the United States.” She said she “would never return” to the country and wants to warn others to be “very cautious.” This story was originally posted on bossip.com . We Old, Ya’ll: Here’s What The BET Awards Looked Like 10 Years Ago

Source: Getty / Getty The 2019 BET Awards weekend kicks off today, and it’s crazy to think that the show has been around for nearly 20 years! Remember the first show in 2001? Steve Harvey and Cedric The Entertainer hosted, and the big winners of the night were Destiny’s Child & Lil Bow Wow. Besides holidays, the BET Awards is the one time of year that Black Twitter comes together as a community to be entertained, talk fashion, and give good ol’ fashion Black folk commentary on literally every single thing about the show. black twitter it’s that time of year again.. bet awards on sunday. — YT: SIMPLY HALLE (@officialhalle_) June 21, 2019 Remember back in the day when you would meet up with your friends at someone’s house (who had cable) so you can watch the show together? Now either you can stream it on your phone and laptop, on just watch vicariously through the folks on social media. Speaking of nostalgia, the fact the 2009 BET Awards was a whole decade ago is kinda wild. 2009 was a decade ago, that’s crazy — Wavy From a Baby (@Tayovelli) February 13, 2019 That was the year that Jamie Foxx hosted for the first time and Michael Jackson passed away just a few days before that. So the entire ceremony was a bit somber. Source: Getty / Getty But on the brightside, Beyonce was there giving her best Ave Maria vocals, and a little known Drake had to perform on a stool due to a busted knee. Source: Getty / Getty A lot has changed since that show. Let’s take a look back at how the red carpet was looking back in ’09.
