Italian Shooter Targeted Blacks, Injuring Six African Migrants Before Being Arrested

GUISEPPE BELLINI/AFP/Getty Images Italian Man Arrested For Shooting Six Africans In Macerata Six people were shot in an incident in the town of Macerata, Italy Saturday. Police say the incident was a racially motivated attack. At least one person was seriously injured and in need of surgery according to officers. According to EyeWitness News reports police arrested the suspected shooter, 28-year-old Luca Traini, who they say wore an Italian flag draped over his shoulders when he was captured by police. Witnesses on the scene say Traini made a fascist salute before being handcuffed. “He drove around in his car and when he saw any black people he shot them,” Marcello Mancini, a Macerata resident, told Reuters television. The shootings occurred just days after a Nigerian immigrant was arrested in connection with the death of an 18-year-old Italian woman whose body was dismembered and stuffed into two suitcases found near Macerata. Traini also fired shots at the offices of the Democratic Party in Macerata, but there were no injuries there. Police say Traini previously ran as a candidate for the rightist Northern League at local elections, but he didn’t receive any votes. The League backs anti-immigrant policies. League leader Matteo Salvini blamed mass immigration for tensions in the country but distanced himself from the shooting. “I can’t wait to get into government to restore security, social justice and serenity to Italy,” he told reporters. PD leader Matteo Renzi called for calm. “The man who fired the gun, hitting six people of colour, is a squalid, mad person. But the state is stronger than him,” he wrote on Facebook. Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said Italy would come down heavily on anyone promoting violence. “We will stop this risk. We will stop it immediately. We will stop it together,” he said. “Hatred and violence will not be able to divide us. It’s so sad to see these issues all across the globe. Prayers up for those affected by this evil. Praying all the victims make full recoveries. Continue reading

‘They’ Schools: Study Shows American Kids (And Teachers) Are Dismally Uneducated About Slavery

Kean Collection/Getty Images High School Students And Educators Woefully Uninformed About Slavery This should come as no surprise as many times as we’ve posted about some of the stupid lessons on slavery kids are receiving in the US, but a new report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project reveals the widespread failure to accurately teach the history of American slavery and enslaved people. According to Atlantic reports Teaching Tolerance conducted online surveys of 1,000 American high-school seniors and more than 1,700 social-studies teachers across the country. The group also reviewed 10 commonly used U.S.-history textbooks, and examined 15 sets of state standards to assess what students know, what educators teach, what publishers include, and what standards require vis-à-vis slavery. What they found was that only 8 percent of 12th-graders could identify slavery as the cause of the Civil War. Fewer than one-third (32 percent) correctly named the 13th Amendment as the formal end of U.S. slavery, with a slightly higher share (35 percent) choosing the Emancipation Proclamation. And fewer than half (46 percent) identified the “Middle Passage” as the transport of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. Fewer than one-quarter (22 percent) of participating high-school seniors knew that “protections for slavery were embedded in [America’s] founding documents”—that rather than a “peculiar institution” of the South, slavery was a Constitutionally enshrined right. And fewer than four in 10 students surveyed (39 percent) understood how slavery “shaped the fundamental beliefs of Americans about race and whiteness.” The teachers didn’t do much better than the students. While teachers overwhelmingly (92 percent) claim they are “comfortable discussing slavery” in their classroom, only slightly more than half (52 percent) teach their students about slavery’s legal roots in the nation’s founding documents, while just 53 percent emphasize the extent of slavery outside of the antebellum South. And 54 percent teach the continuing legacy of slavery in today’s society. Additionally, dozens of teachers rely on “simulations”—role-playing and games—to teach slavery, a method that Teaching Tolerance has warned against on the grounds that it can lead to stereotypes and oversimplification. Meanwhile, a large majority—73 percent—use “slaves” when talking about slavery in the classroom instead of “enslaved persons” (49 percent), the latter term of which has gained favor for emphasizing the humanity of those forced into bondage. That’s a strong point about slaves vs. enslaved persons. Did you ever consider the impact of the wording? Also those games and simulations are how so many teachers are getting in trouble. Teachers — stop playing GAMES. Just keep it 100 with the kids and make sure they know HUMANS were treated INHUMANELY! LaGarrett King, an assistant professor of social-studies education at the University of Missouri, served on the Teaching Tolerance advisory board that developed a framework for teaching American slavery—basically, the concepts that every graduating high-school senior should know—as part of the report’s recommendations. As a teacher educator, he said the study fills a significant void. Students training to be teachers, especially those being educated to teach in elementary schools, know little about the history of slavery, he stated, noting that “much curriculum and teaching around racially and ethnically diverse [people] features a fun—foods and festival—approach to learning.” By contrast, King said, the framework provides a guide to delve into topics such as slavery and black history with a thorough and academically sound approach, versus teaching slavery in reductive and superficial ways. “Can you teach slavery without it being psychologically violent to the children? The answer is no, violence will occur and is expected,” he said. “The key is the recognition of white supremacy and [of] the humanity of black people that helps aid in the complexity of the subject.” What steps do you think need to be taken to make sure that the harsh realities of slavery and the impact of the institution on America overall are taught? Safety Is Sexy: Pyeongchang Sets A Record for Most Condoms Distributed At Winter Olympics

FABRICE COFFRINI/AFP/Getty Images Winter Olympics Sets New Record For Condom Distribution In 2018, The Olympics ain’t playing when it comes to safe sex–and Pyeongchang is going above and beyond to make sure that every athlete is safe at the Winter Olympics. South China Morning Post  has reported that 110,000 condoms will be given out this year. With the total number of athletes only reaching 2,925, that’s a little less than 40 condoms per person, which makes it the largest number distributed in the history of the Winter Olympics. If that supply runs out, the site also claims that condoms will also be available in men and women’s restrooms in addition to the media and medical centers throughout the Olympic Village. Convenience Co donated 100,000 of the condoms for “a successful hosting of the Winter Olympics and the prevention of the spread of the HIV virus.”100,000 condoms were passed out during the 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi games respectively, but during the Summer Olympics in 2016, Brazil passed out a whopping 450,000 condoms. More people do compete in the Summer Games than the Winter, though, so that’s to be expected. Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympics runs from Feb. 9 to Feb 25. Continue reading

Prison Baes: Suge Knight’s Fiancée Sentenced 3 Years For Shady Probation Violation

Image via Robyn Beck-Pool/Getty Suge Knight’s Fiancée Sentenced 3 Years In Prison The couple who is incarcerated together…paroles together? Suge Knight is sitting in prison awaiting the start of his murder trial in April. His fianceé, Toi-Lin Kelly, is set to join her husband-to-be in inmate status. Last year, Kelly was accused of selling surveillance footage that was connected to Suge’s trial to TMZ for $55,000. She plead no contest to the charge and was sentenced to 5 years probation among other things. Friday, a judge found Kelly guilty of indirectly communicating with Suge in order to set up and interview for BET’s new Death Row documentary. Part of her probation was that she was to refrain from any communication with the former music mogul. According to NYDailyNews , Judge Douglas Sortino sentenced the ride-or-die chick to death. Well, not literally, but he did give her 3 years in prison for her “blatant” and “jaw-dropping” violation. To make matters worse, Toi-Lin and Suge have an 8-year-old son together who will now be without BOTH parents. If you ride, at some point you will “die”. Continue reading
