I know this might come as a shock to many, but players and coaches in the dugout and the bullpen aren’t always up at the fence watching the game. Sometimes they’re making smalltalk with each other, sometimes they’re playing games, and sometimes they’re even scouting the bleachers for tail. For tail. But fear not; their motives aren’t always completely impure. On rare occasion, there may be real depth to their carnal surveillance. As we see from the example of Jason Phillips, former big league backstop for the Mets, Dodgers, and Blue Jays, and current bullpen catcher for the allegedly big league Seattle Mariners. I’ll let columnist Jerry Brewer tell the story : Jason Phillips spotted a woman at Safeco Field last May and knew he had to make a choice: Be bold or be ignored. … The game with the Oakland A’s went into extra innings. Phillips grabbed a baseball, scribbled his number on it, got the woman’s attention and tossed it to her. … On Sunday, Jason Phillips and Molly Ray will get married, and their wedding guests will attend the ceremony in the only logical place to celebrate their serendipitous romance. The bullpen. Molly Ray being the woman at Safeco Field. I probably shouldn’t have left that detail out. It’s a heartwarming tale of true love, and how deep, meaningful connections can be forged in the most unexpected of places. It would’ve been easy to think that Jason Phillips was disappointed with having to retire and become a bullpen catcher in his early 30’s. However, he retired in his physical prime, he has a steady job that keeps him involved with the game, and he just met a lovely new wife at the ballpark by means of a bold act he’ll be recounting for the rest of his years. Jason Phillips, it seems, is living a life worthy of envy. So there’s your d’awww moment of the night, in case you find yourself disappointed with the NBA outcome. Also, because this is the Internet, following are some embarrassingly easy alternate headlines: Bullpen Catcher Jason Phillips First 2010 Mariner To Score Mariners’ Catcher Skips Middleman, Delivers Ball Straight To Seats Reception For Phillips/Ray Wedding To Make Even Bigger Mess Of Mariner Bullpen Rough Season Drives Mariner Coach To Escapism Through Marriage

The top two ranked golfers in the world arrived at Pebble Beach and neither came away with a birdie. According to Elias Sports Bureau , it is the first time ever that Woods and Mickelson have played a round together on the same course with neither of them having a birdie. It’s ever more disconcerting for Woods given that he made the first 10 greens in regulation. On No. 17, he landed his tee shot on a 222-yard Par 3 nine feet from the hole, but then pulled his birdie shot left. After a day noted for difficult conditions with no one getting more than 3-under, Shaun Micheel, Paul Casey and Brendon De Jonge are the clubhouse leaders at 2-under. ‘Now, I’m not nervous about what I say,’ actress tells MTV News of doing interviews. By Josh Wigler Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News Kristen Stewart is having fun. Now, that might not sound like a groundbreaking statement. After all, the “Twilight” actress is a star of one of the decade’s single biggest franchises, not to mention the fact that her character is at the center of a romantic tug-of-war between heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. But Stewart has sometimes come under scrutiny for appearing less than enthused, even uncomfortable, during interviews. While out promoting “Eclipse,” though, a visibly upbeat Stewart told MTV News that she’s having a lot of fun promoting the franchise’s upcoming third installment, due June 30. “I’m not forcing myself to do it. I’m actually just naturally having more fun with it,” she said of doing press for the movie. “You get to talk about stuff that you normally don’t really think about, so there’s an interesting aspect to it.” Stewart said that her outlook has changed because she’s grown more relaxed and less self-conscious about the kinds of topics she’s asked to address during interviews. “The only thing that really freaked me out before was just getting nervous about what I said,” she explained. “Now, I’m not nervous about what I say — just because I know what I want to say. Before, I didn’t. I had nothing to say. As an actor, it’s like, ‘OK, cool, I’m so interesting and I’m just going to sit here and talk about myself and look like that’s important to other people.’ That was always hard for me to do, so I looked, like, rude or whatever. But I’m having more fun with it now, as you can probably tell!” KStew is feeling less nervous about doing press these days: Do you think she gets a bad rap about her interviews? ‘Drake: Better Than Good Enough’ airs Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. on MTV. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: MTV News An early cut of the documentary “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” airing Wednesday at 10 p.m. on MTV, was screened for hip-hop journalists Thursday (June 17) at the MTV offices. The doc — which is still being shot — follows Drake on his Away From Home Tour, but also shows intimate moments with his family, vocal coach and inner circle and the recording of his just-released debut, Thank Me Later. In the footage, we see Drizzy recording the song “Show Me a Good Time” and learn why Drake only writes his rhymes on a BlackBerry, among other intimate moments. “What was interesting is that I didn’t know Drake’s mom was sick,” The Source Executive Editor Amy Andrieux said shortly after the screening. “To see him going into his grind — knowing that now — is incredible. I know family is important to a lot of artists, but a lot of people don’t realize how much effort you have to put in these days. I think that was the most prominent thing about the entire documentary from what we saw. As a rapper, yeah, there’s a certain amount of grind you have to do. There’s constant effort. But it doesn’t mean you’re nice [on the mic], you’re dope. But Drake is doing whatever it takes to be that and to maintain his grind. That was really interesting to see it in film, ’cause you don’t see that.” “The most revealing parts of the clips that we saw from the Drake special are the ones he didn’t necessarily mean to be revealing,” multimedia personality Miss Info said. “Personally, I think he’s a professional, and I think there are no real candid moments with him. I think he’s aware of what’s going on and what he’s going to keep to himself. The revealing parts to me were the little observations that this guy, rather than having a million weed carriers, a bunch of groupies alongside while he performs, he had his vocal coach there. He’s taking vocal lessons in his tour bus. He’s wearing Debussy T-shirts, a classical composer. Those are the things to me that stood out. Rather than the ‘I’m truly happy to be here, and I hope this moment lasts forever.’ ” ThisIs50.com’s Jeremy Bettis said he was also surprised to see Drake and his coach. “The part that I liked the most [in the documentary] was the part seeing him training with his vocal coach,” Bettis said. “That’s the vulnerable part a lot of artists don’t want to show. But to see that he actually puts work in and he knows that he can better himself, that was the dopest part I’ve seen. His work ethic is crazy. It shows with the records he puts out, the videos he puts out, the performances. He was at Summer Jam one day, flew out the same to go to London to do a show. It shows the work. “I think it’s Drake’s consistency,” Bettis added about what makes the 23-year-old such a bankable superstar already. “He makes good records. He’s got a great team around him, obviously, great influences: the Jay-Zs, Kanyes, the Waynes. He knows what he’s doing. He’s not the average dumb artist just throwing out records. He has a plan, and he’s following that plan.” What behind-the-scenes footage are you looking forward to in the upcoming documentary? Let us know in the comments! The Boston Celtics were a half away from an 18th championship, taking a 40-34 lead into halftime during a sloppy Game 7 of the NBA finals on Thursday night. Ron Artest kept the Lakers in it with 12 points on a night Kobe Bryant (3 of 14) and Pau Gasol (3 of 12) were having miserable shooting nights. So were most of the Lakers, who shot 26.5 percent from the field and made only half of their 12 free…

Mets’ knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is 5-0, with a 2.82 ERA over six starts. But that isn’t what makes him awesome. Pitch Face is what makes him awesome. That’s really all the introduction you’re gonna need. The Diamondbacks lost to the Red Sox tonight, Boston completing the sweep of Arizona. That’s nothing new. In fact, it marked the visitors’ thirteenth consecutive defeat on the road – the last time they won away from Phoenix was exactly a month ago, beating the Marlins in Florida. Since Arizona came into being in 1998, there’s been only one longer streak by a National League club – Washington lost sixteen straight road games in 2008-09. It seems that the team is beginning a rebuilding process, with the trade to Oakland earlier this week of Conor Jackson, one of the longest-tenured Diamondbacks – only catcher Chris Snyder had been with the team longer. Dan Haren commented after the deal, “Nothing that happens from here on out would be a surprise to me… We understand that things have to change.” General Manager Josh Byrnes seems to agree, saying… “We aren’t where we need to be in the standings and as far as sort of the things we’d like to do to adjust the roster, there’s also payroll considerations as we try to sort of get ready for next year.” The word around baseball is that Kelly Johnson is perhaps the next Diamondback to be traded. He has been performing brilliantly this year, and could well be the team’s lone representative at the All-Star Game. This would encourage the team to sell high, and with Johnson’s club-friendly contract, as well as him being under team control for 2011 (his third arbitration year), there would seem to be potential for a decent haul. However, it might not stop there, with the club willing to listen to offers for almost anyone currently on the roster. The only “untouchables” would appear to be third-baseman Mark Reynolds, right-fielder Justin Upton and starting pitcher Ian Kennedy, who has an ERA+ of 127 in his first full season, and could quite possibly be the best of the chips traded between Arizona, Detroit and the Yankees over the winter. Otherwise, after finishing last in the NL West in 2009, and looking likely to do so again this season, the Diamondbacks appear ready to rip it up and start again, less than three years after reaching the National League Championship Series.

Game seven of the 2010 NBA Finals was the perfect ending for one of the best Championship Series in any sport in Your Old Pal New York Vinnie’s time on this Planet. This was the way to end a season with the two best teams in the NBA duking it out until the final seconds before the Los Angeles Lakers walked away with the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Early on it looked like the Boston Celtics would finish their dramatic turn around from a team that looked like they were ready for an early exit in the Playoffs and instead went to the seventh game of the NBA Finals. But in the end it was “ The Black Mamba ” himself Lakers All-Star guard Kobe Bryant who once again strapped his team on his back in the critical moments of the game and carried his team to the 83-79 comeback win over Boston. Bryant was named the 2010 NBA Finals MVP and deservedly so; especially in this game when he had a pretty lousy night from the field but still somehow ended up as the leading scorer of the game and got a double-double as well. Bryant did not win this game by himself as Ron Artest scored 20 points and Pau Gasol also came up huge putting 19 points on the scoreboard and grabbing 18 rebounds off the backboard. For the second year in a row the Lakers proved that they had the toughness when they needed it. That was a key factor in their winning this game as well as the series. Although New York Vinnie never gave them the credit they deserved during the season they were “ the best team in the NBA ” this year. They deserved to win this series. That is not to take anything away from the Boston Celtics who certainly did look like an old and lethargic team once the NBA second season began. Whether things came together for them at the right time or they took their game to another level once the Playoffs started Boston was for real! And they took the NBA Champions all the way down to the wire and lost by a mere four points. That does not look like a team that needs to go through a rebuild in New York Vinnie’s opinion. You know that it has been a great season when you are ticked off when it is over and you can not wait until the start of the next season. That is the feeling that New York Vinnie has as the 2010 NBA season has come to an end. It was a tough regular season but these Playoffs and especially the NBA Finals showed once again why the NBA is “ The Greatest Game On Earth! ”

-Maybe I’ve just heard him too much, but Mike Breen is starting to get annoying. His calls are totally predictable, and he doesn’t always have the best sense of the moment. Mostly, I just miss Marv Albert. – Artest, for three. Clank. -Nine offensive rebounds for the Lakers right now. Nine! Luckily, Andrew Bynum will come out soon, and that should help Boston counteract LA’s length.
