On DVD: Woody Allen Meets Halo in Red vs. Blue: The Blood Gulch Chronicles

You can’t toss a rock up in the air over a city street without braining someone who has definite but vague ideas about how new electronic media is going to “change everything.” And of course they’re mostly right, while at the same time you wish you could do that all day — toss that rock, brain those people. Movies are still movies, pop songs are still pop, crummy TV shows are still crummy, etc. (The big change is now we expect to get it all for free.) Yet some things have arisen spontaneously, like mushrooms, from the keyboard-console-screen mode of cultural intercourse we’re so enjoying. The epic new, remastered, five-season box set collecting Red vs. Blue: The Blood Gulch Chronicles is a perfect example.

Hey, Tobey Maguire! Listen up, Robert Downey Jr., Shia LaBeouf, and the rest of you would-be action heroes! Take heed of Sylvester Stallone, who has but a few words to explain the demise of his beloved genre since its zenith in the ’80s — and indirectly or not, you are implicated.

The Batman 3 Viral Marketing is Starting So Early

In the long run-up to The Dark Knight , Warner Bros. marketing went all out to build buzz ahead of time in very unconventional ways (like teaser websites, Comic-Con flash mobs, and the premature death of star Heath Ledger). Still, for the only recently announced sequel , they may have topped themselves.

Emma Watson’s Music Video: Meet Your New Tawny Kitaen

Now that the new Harry Potter trailer is out of the way, let’s talk about Emma Watson’s newest artform: music video cameos. She works up Hogwarts-certified charms in a video for her boyfriend George Craig’s band One Night Only, playing a lovestruck tease. Emma flashes coy glances and at one point yells, “Accio My ’80s-Throwback Boyfriend’s Balls!” Not true, but who cares? Helena Christensen, you are no longer music videos’ most wickedly gaming vixen. Did MTV Cancel The City?

Here’s a nasty rumor that tops anything Lauren Conrad ever started: Laguna Beach spinoff The City may be off the air soon. According to Fashionista , the reality series about Whitney Port’s travails as a New York fashion designer may be over thanks to Port and co-star Olivia Palermo’s disinterest. I guess this means Diane von Furstenburg will be reduced to cameo appearances on Project Runway while Kelly Cutrone will have to just hang out on her own Bravo show. Devastating. [ Fashionista ]

Jason Bateman’s Fast iPhone Excuse

Annoyed with reports that he was privy to celebrity iPhone line-cutting privileges last week, Jason Bateman has taken to Twitter to explain the situation once and for all. “There wasn’t one boo. Not one hiss. The Apple guy brought me in away from the paparazzi. Period.” Bateman then went on to remember his time in that muggy, slow-moving line at the Grove fondly: “I was content in line. I wish I’d stayed.” [ Popeater ]

What are Woody Allen’s Favorite Woody Allen Movies?

The IM comes in from a few friends, and it’s virtually the same in every case: “Woody Allen picked six favorites from his own list of films, and have you SEEN the choices?” I hadn’t yet, but at the same time, my Google Reader had filled up with aggrieved headlines about it, and to take it from the reception, he chose unwisely! So I look at the six he picked, and guys? They’re not that bad.

Peter Jackson in Negotiations to Direct The Hobbit

It looks like the MGM and Warner Bros. strategy of contacting tonally inappropriate directors to helm The Hobbit franchise had paid off better than any strategy associated with MGM in the last year. According to Movieline sister site Deadline, Peter Jackson is fully immersed in negotiations that would place him behind the camera for the two Hobbit films. Feign your total surprise… now.

How Miley Cyrus Forced Disney to Ban On-Set Tweeting

Miley Cyrus may have been one of the first stars to famously delete her Twitter — as she told Movieline , “It’s dangerous, it’s not fun, [and] it wastes your life” — but who knew that her habits could dampen other people’s online oversharing? According to her director pal Adam Shankman, he and Cyrus are responsible for a new no-tweeting stipulation that Disney has started to write into its cast and crew contracts. #howdidthishappen?
