Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Mum On ‘Social Network’ Oscar Nods

‘We’ve said all we’re going to say about the movie,’ a Facebook rep says after Academy Awards announcements. By Gil Kaufman Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network” Photo: Columbia Pictures The creators and cast of “The Social Network” were in major freak-out-excitement mode on Tuesday when Oscar nominations were announced. Continuing a very successful awards-season streak, the film picked up eight Academy Award nominations on Tuesday morning — making it this year’s third most-nominated Oscar contender behind “The King’s Speech” with 12 and “True Grit” with 10, and tied with “Inception.” Among the categories “The Social Network” will compete in on Oscar night next month will be Best Picture, Best Director (David Fincher), Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and Best Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). Fincher, racking up his second career nomination, said he was “very grateful and humbled” by the nods and incredibly proud of his work on the film adaptation of the story of Facebook’s founding. One person who wasn’t joining in the group hug was Facebook founder and twentysomething billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, who isn’t portrayed in the best light in the film. A representative for the site told The Hollywood Reporter , “We’ve said all we’re going to say about the movie and the books … We’ve moved on from this discussion, and we think others have, too.” While Zuckerberg wasn’t exactly up for offering any congratulations, Eisenberg said he’d heard that the Internet mogul had thought the Oscar nominee had done a “nice job” portraying him in the movie. The film depicts Zuckerberg as a ruthless social climber who founded the popular social-networking website mainly to become more popular with the ladies — an image that the Facebook starter has rejected. He’s mostly kept mum on the movie, though he did tell Oprah Winfrey in September that he took some members of his staff to see a screening. “It’s a movie, it’s fun … I can promise you, this is my life so I know it’s not that dramatic,” he said. “The last six years have been a lot of coding and focus and hard work, but maybe it would be fun to remember it as partying and all this crazy drama.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Social Network.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Hot Sundance Trends: Actors Directing!

“But I really want to direct” isn’t just a cliché — it’s also a burning ambition among the movies’ thespian class. 5 Oscar-Nominated Roles of 2011 and Their Oscar-Winning Forebears

The Oscars mean nothing without their celebrated past, and this year, five Oscar-nominated performances stood out to me as the descendants of five previous winners. Can you name the Academy-loved role that almost perfectly mirrors Nicole Kidman’s in Rabbit Hole ? The consecutive Oscar-winning Best Actors who laid the track for Mark Zuckerberg? What about the histrionic mother who predated Melissa Leo’s character in The Fighter . Join us for a trip into the Oscar vault. For the hell of it, we’re picking which performances were better, too.

Fighter Producer Todd Lieberman Chats About His First Awards-Season Marathon

Just as The Fighter was a near-lock to earn Oscar nominations today, it’s a near-lock to win at least one or two statuettes during the Feb. 27 ceremony. If you had predicted this eventuality six years ago when Todd Lieberman and his producing partner David Hoberman first undertook the project — a troubled drama amid a development slate that included Beauty Shop and The Shaggy Dog — the producers might have driven you to the hospital themselves. But those crowd-pleasing roots grew into the film The Fighter is today — an awards-season juggernaut for Best Picture rookies Lieberman, Hoberman and star/co-producer Mark Wahlberg.

Gatoroid Vs. Mega-Python Promo: A Cautionary Tale About Animal Steroid Use

Before you spend the rest of your day processing the Oscar Nominations and ensuing analysis, why not step out of prestige-land and relax for a second with the new trailer for SyFy’s Gatoroid vs. Mega Python ? As the title promises, it has both a Gatoroid and a Mega-Python; Sometimes they fight each other, and sometimes they split up to eat low-flying blimps. Absent from the title, but still in the film is some sort of cat fight between Deborah Gibson and Tiffany, which is apparently pretty significant if you are familiar with Mega Shark and Mega-Piranha or the old music rivalry between the two. If you’re not, I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
