One Direction Prove Themselves During ‘SNL’ Debut

The boys also show off acting chops during ‘Manuel Ortiz Show’ sketch. By James Dinh One Direction performs on SNL Photo: NBC It’s usually the more seasoned artists that take to the “Saturday Night Live” stage as musical guests, but this season of the late-night NBC show has welcomed newer acts to provide entertainment mid-laughs. Back in January, Lana Del Rey raised eyebrows for delivering a pair of performances that didn’t sit right with critics. And on Saturday night, it was One Direction, who continued their Stateside domination with some smooth performances on the Sofia Vergara-hosted episode of “SNL.” Beginning with their mega-smash “What Makes You Beautiful,” One Direction worked each side of the Studio 8H stage. Dressed in blazers, vests and cardigans, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan crooned the feel-good track while showing off their boyish charm. When the boys reappeared later on for a performance of their song “One Thing,” they came with a bit more playfulness. As one of the groups behind the recent boy-band resurgence, the guys proved they have more than enough talent, teenage allure and overall packaging to keep them on the charts. 1D also got into the acting action when they made a brief appearance on “The Manuel Ortiz Show” skit. With the help of some wigs and mustaches, the British pop band acted as Spanish children of a rather dysfunctional family. And like all guests on Manuel’s show, the singers strutted onto the stage doing the skit’s signature dance. One Directioners got a double-dose of acting from the boys when they made their national television acting debut on Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” earlier in the evening. MTV News recently caught up with some of the show’s actors, who had nothing but positive things to say about the British music sensations. While iCarly herself, Miranda Cosgrove, found the bandmates “really funny,” another castmate, Nathan Krauss, admitted his initial uncertainty in regards to their acting chops. “Having One Direction on set was really cool. We didn’t really know what to expect from them, because we had heard that they didn’t really have any acting experience because they have a lot of lines and are almost in every scene,” the actor explains. “But we were all very pleasantly surprised. They did very, very well, especially Harry, because he had to pretend to be sick the whole time.” What did you think of One Direction’s “SNL” set? Tell us below! REVIEW: Sing Your Song Doesn’t Need to Tease Greatness Out of Harry Belafonte — It’s Already There

It takes at least two things to make a terrific documentary: A great subject and a light but deft touch. Susanne Rostock’s Sing Your Song , which traces the career of Harry Belafonte with a specific focus on the singer and actor’s social activism, certainly has the former — it’s the latter that’s lacking. But if nothing else, Sing Your Song works as a testament to Belafonte’s drive and dedication to causes well outside the usual goals of simply making money. If you don’t know much about Belafonte beyond the fact that he was that great-looking guy who had a hit in the ’50s with “The Banana Boat Song,” Rostock’s documentary is as good a place as any to start. Sing Your Song is simply conceived and constructed: Rostock (making her directing debut, though she’s been editing documentaries for years) uses on-camera interviews with Belafonte, as well as voice-over narration, to frame a selection of television and news clips and still photographs. The story doesn’t need much embellishment: Belafonte was born in Harlem in 1927, though he spent a portion of his childhood with his grandmother, in Jamaica. He served in the Navy during World War II, and afterward became involved, along with his friend Sidney Poitier, with the American Negro Theater. Belafonte also studied acting at the New School, along with Poitier, Marlon Brando, Walter Matthau and Bernie Schwartz (the last better known as Tony Curtis). He began singing in clubs in New York in the early 1950s. And when he saw Huddie Ledbetter on stage one evening, he was inspired to start researching folk music himself, not just purely American folk music, but that of other countries as well — his 1956 album Calypso was the first LP to sell more than 1 million copies. ( Sing Your Song includes a TV clip of ’50s talk-show host Steve Allen passing one framed gold record after another into Belafonte’s arms.) Belafonte appears to have become a social activist without even knowing it, inspiring outrage in an extremely segregated America without even trying. In Robert Rossen’s 1957 Island in the Sun, his character’s romance with a white woman (played by Joan Fontaine) spurred controversy, though it also boosted ticket sales. Racism was still a huge problem — perhaps even a bigger problem — in 1968, when Petula Clark, performing on television with Belafonte, dared to take his arm. The outcry from advertisers and the public was deafening. Sing Your Song suggests that all of these experiences helped shape Belafonte’s political sensibility, goading him into action instead of just accepting injustice. Rostock includes interviews with significant figures of the civil rights movement, among them Julian Bond, who explains how much it meant to see Belafonte on television in the 1950s: “You’d call your neighbor – ‘Colored on TV!’ It was so rare.” And Belafonte himself explains how he became drawn to the civil rights cause: Martin Luther King Jr. set up a meeting with him, assuring him it wouldn’t take long. Four hours later, Belafonte emerged, ready to do anything necessary to get the point across to the rest of the nation. Sing Your Song is most potent in dealing with Belafonte’s activism during the ’50s and ’60s, becoming murkier and more disorganized when Rostock heads into the Watergate era. It’s not that Belafonte’s work became less visible or less significant at that point, but Rostock presents those years as a blurry laundry list, whirring from Belafonte’s efforts to end hunger in Ethiopia to his anti-Apartheid activities to his involvement in the turmoil in Haiti in the mid-1990s. By the last third, Sing Your Song begins to feel more like a promotional film — promoting activism, if nothing else — than a well-rounded portrait. Still, it’s valuable for both the vintage footage Rostock has collected and for the observations provided by Belafonte, who is as charming, handsome and persuasive in his mid-80s as he ever was. When he speaks about his recent efforts to end gang violence in Los Angeles, he says, “I’m still looking to fix these things I thought we fixed 50 years ago.” Retirement, apparently, isn’t an option. Michael Biehn Plays My Favorite Scene: Are You Talking to Him?

He’s stared down the Terminator, tangled with aliens, and faced off against Doc Holliday with nary a glimmer of fear, so suffice to say Michael Biehn ’s no stranger to playing hardened, iconic screen bad asses. (Think Biehn’s played tough? Just wait and see him mean, nasty, and unraveling at the seams in this week’s apocalyptic horror The Divide , a film whose production was reportedly a nightmare in itself.) But early on, Biehn says, he wasn’t so sure how serious he should be about acting – that is, until he saw Robert De Niro in a riveting classic role that convinced him that this was his calling. “When I first moved out to Los Angeles I was thinking, you know, I wanted to be an actor but I didn’t really know what acting was about,” said Biehn, who began his career at the age of 22 playing teenagers in films like Coach and Grease . “I thought if I could be a model, or even do commercials and stuff like that for the rest of my life, I’d be happy.” What kept Biehn from going down that path? Robert De Niro, whose Oscar-nominated turn as the unstable Travis Bickle in Paul Schrader’s Taxi Driver left a lasting and significant impact on the young Biehn. “I saw Taxi Driver ,” he explained, “and Taxi Driver kind of saved my life. The scene where Robert De Niro is looking at himself in the mirror saying, ‘You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me ? Who the hell else are you talkin’ to?’ That’s the scene that changed my life by changing my attitude about acting.” Biehn’s probably not alone in this fine My Favorite Scene choice, a scene that ranked at #10 on AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movie Quotes and is among the most iconic moments in ‘70s American cinema. Watch it below and just think: Thanks to this, we got Michael Biehn. Mr. De Niro, we are talking to you. Get more My Favorite Scenes here .

Milla Jovovich Proud Of 3-D Cleavage In ‘Musketeers’

‘I had to eat a lot of pasta and get cinched really tightly into the corset and let the girls do the acting for me,’ she tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Milla Jovovich in “The Three Musketeers” Photo: Summit Entertainment Paul W.S. Anderson was proud. Sitting in a swanky London hotel earlier this month while promoting “The Three Musketeers,” the director happily recounted one critic’s opinion of his 3-D action-adventure and the quality of the performance of Milla Jovovich, who is not only one of the film’s stars but also his wife. “There was a review of the movie that said Milla’s cleavage is worth the price of admission,” he laughed to MTV News. “Cleavage in 3-D: It was what the medium was invented for.” Shortly thereafter, Jovovich was shocked — shocked! — in an interview to learn her husband was dishing such details to the press. “I can’t believe he told you that story!” she said with a smile. “That’s so embarrassing. I’m like, ‘Honey, you can’t tell people that!’ I’m trying to be taken seriously, and now my cleavage is going to sell tickets.” Whatever works, right? Though to be fair, “Musketeers” has a lot more going for it than some three-dimensional bosoms. Anderson’s flick is a swashbuckling affair that stays true to much of Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale, but introduces a whole lot of contemporary bling into the mix. So while you get fair maidens in corsets and swordfights galore, Anderson also delivers steampunk airships and 21st-century wit, all captured by 3-D cameras. At the center of it all is Jovovich’s Milady de Winter, a tough-as-nails woman who may look harmless but who will stab you in the back — or at least poison or otherwise maim you — if the opportunity for self-preservation or self-promotion arises. How does such a double- and triple-crosser survive in “Musketeers”? What Jovovich calls her “girls” certainly help. “I did have to prepare a lot to make my cleavage what it was,” she said. “I had to eat a lot of pasta and get cinched really tightly into the corset to get the effect and let the girls do the acting for me. Each one took classes. Stanislavski . I think the left one is more talented than the right.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Three Musketeers.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Draya: “I’m Not The Sex Crazed Female That People Think I Am” [EXCLUSIVE]

Originally posted here:

You may know Draya from her previous relationship with Chris Brown, seeing her on the covers of countless men’s magazines, music videos, or even from the controversy surrounding her arrest over “child endangerment” accusations. But now, we simply now Draya from her role on the newest season of “Basketball Wives, LA”. She’s the center of attention and the cause of all the drama on the show. From her groupie reputation, outspoken personality and desire to fit in the the other “wives”, it seems that this chick just can’t catch a break . I recently sat down with the model turned reality star to hear her side of the story and see just what really went down with her and the other girls on “Basketball Wives LA”. Take a look at what Draya had to say about her groupie reputation, being linked to famous men, new business ventures, dealing with the backstabbing and drama on the show and even her dating life. There’s definitely more to this girl than boobs, booty and a stripper pole! HelloBeautiful: A lot of people question why you’re on the cast of “Basketball Wives” considering that your not married or engaged to a baller. How did you really get hooked up with the cast? Draya: I met Gloria through an acting class. She was in LA trying to pursue her acting career and I was already involved in the acting world. We became friends and she introduced me to the group. HB: Since you’ve been on the show its been nothing but drama.. and its all been geared towards you.. why do you think that everybody loves to hate on you? Draya : I’ve tried to figure out a reason as to why they would sit around and talk about me all day. But I’m not 45 so I can’t put myself in that mentality. So I don’t know why they do it. I just don’t know. But I’m absolutely favored on the show. People have tried to understand me and understand where I’m coming from. That’s pretty much my whole point as to what I wanted to do. HB: So what happened between you and Laura in that boxing ring? Did you have any idea why she was taking all her anger and aggression out on you? Draya: I had no idea she had beef with me. I guess they planned for me and her to fight each other because when it was time to get in the ring with her, nobody wanted to go in. I’m the only one that shouldn’t have gotten into the ring because I’m the only that makes money off my face. I’m the one that has the most to lose. But I didn’t want to look like a punk so I got in. It was supposed to just be the techniques that we learned and he only showed us two punches and two kicks. She starts swinging like a bat out of hell so I’m thinking that this is a street fight now. She never said anything about it. What they didn’t show was that we went two rounds, like we fought for a while. It wasn’t just a beat down like it looks. HB: This week’s episode was crazy! The girls pulled up the police report from the situation with your son and attacked you! How did that feel? What was going through your mind during that confrontation? Draya: I just look at them like who has the time to do all that. I show these ladies nothing but a nice side of me. It’s not like I showed them any sneaky characteristics about myself for them to not trust me. Why would you look up something on someone who has been about all about positivity? Why would you want to find the bad? They went out of their way to try and find something. I knew that this was something that was going to come out and that it was going to be a topic. HB: Why did you want to be included in their “circle” so bad? Draya: I didn’t want to be included in their circle, I was just being friendly. They invited me to everything that I have showed up to. I wouldn’t try extra hard to be their friend. I got invited to places and I felt going would be nice. I didn’t know what they were saying behind the scenes or when they were together without me. I didn’t know any of that was taking place. As you see they hug and they’re nice and then everything takes a left turn. If you saw any of the bonus clips, where we’re talking about how I used to strip, we’re having a regular, friendly, laughable conversation and then all of a sudden it takes a left turn. It’s just really annoying. HB: Do things between you and the other girls eventually get better on the show? Draya: Things get better as far as what I’m trying to do. Our relationships go up and down and all around. Everybody goes through it with everybody. Just pay close attention. Do you still talk to any of the girls from the show? Draya: I still talk to Malaysia. I don’t really talk to the other girls unless it involves business. HB: Do you have any regrets from being on the show? Draya: No, I don’t have any regrets from being on the show because it’s helped my business. HB: Are you dating someone right now, and do you have a celeb crush? Draya: Yes, I am dating someone right now. I don’t have a celeb crush. I really don’t do that. HB: What do you have to say to people who call u a jump off? Do you feel like they have a valid point or are they just simply “haters”? Draya: I was dating people in the industry who are well known. I’m a normal girl that likes to date guys. If I was dating regular guys nobody would say anything its just because these guys are well known. I’m not just this sex crazed girl that people make me out to be. I’m really in LA working my butt off. I actually have a new business that’s coming soon and you can see more of that on the show. 5 Questions we always ask… What’s in your bag? Mascara, a million lollipops from the bank, lip gloss, jewelry ( in case I have to change it from day to night) If you were forced to get a tattoo, what would it be of? I have 11 tattoos already! But the most meaningful tattoos I have are my mom and my son’s name. Everything else is just artwork. What’s your vice and where do you go to get it? I have to be waxed all over! I go to this salon in LA. What’s one urge you get but never act on? I want to sing in public but I’m always too shy to do it in front of my friends! I can do it in front of strangers but not my friends because they’ll judge me! When was the last time you cried? The episode that just aired this week was the last time I cried, and that was two months ago.
