Pastor Terry Jones Has Cancelled His Plan to Burn the Quran on 9/11 ||| UPDATE (9/9/10, 10:41PM PT): Oh… No, Wait… Now He’s "Rethinking" His Cancelled Quran Burning

Florida minister cancels plans to burn Koran on 9/11 GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The leader of a small Florida church that espouses anti-Islam philosophy says he is canceling plans to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11. Pastor Terry Jones said Thursday that he decided to cancel his protest because the leader of a planned Islamic Center near ground zero has agreed to move its controversial location. The agreement couldn't be immediately confirmed. Jones' plans to burn Islam's holiest text Saturday sparked an international outcry. President Barack Obama, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan and several Christian leaders had urged Jones to reconsider his plans. They said his actions would endanger U.S. soldiers and provide a strong recruitment tool for Islamic extremists. Jones' protest also drew criticism from religious and political leaders from across the Muslim world. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-naw-koran-burning-20100909,0,6… added by: EthicalVegan

For Bill Press, Ground Zero Is Sacred Until Conservatives Say So

Bill Press is confused. He can’t seem to decide whether Ground Zero is a sacred site. When he was using the memory of 9/11 as a political football to blast Glenn Beck, lower Manhattan was hallowed ground. But now that conservatives are making that claim, Press has proclaimed that the area “is not a sacred site.” Make up your mind, Bill! In June, Press compared Beck’s planned 8/28 rally at the Lincoln Memorial commemorating the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech to an Al Qaeda “rally on September 11 – at Ground Zero.” “Sometimes you have to stand up and say, this is wrong – the wrong place,” he added. “It’s a slap to the American people… There are some places where cheap political tricks should not be allowed.” But now that the right is saying virtually the same thing about the Ground Zero Mosque, Press has proclaimed that “there’s only one reason to oppose this mosque, and that is to paint Islam as an evil religion and to paint all Muslims and equate them with a 19 terrorist who’s flew into that building. it is wrong. it is un-American and the people against it ought to be ashamed of playing a cheap political trick” (h/t Jamas Taranto ). Well which is it? Doug Powers writes : Tea Partiers are like Al Qaeda even though the only thing the Tea Party has in common with 9/11 is that it’s trying to prevent another one. In this case, Press is not condemning an entire group of people for the actions of a few, but rather demonizing an entire group of people for the actions of none of them. The Tea Party is comparable to the Islamic terrorists who murdered thousands on 9/11, but it’s un-American to criticize a mosque near Ground Zero because to do so is to blame an entire group for the actions of a few? This is hilariously misguided and insane even for Bill Press.

NYT’s Charles Blow Defends Sarah Palin from Democrat Death Wishes

New York Times columnist Charles Blow on Saturday actually defended former governor Sarah Palin from death wish attacks by two Democrat officials in New Hampshire. In case you missed it, on Tuesday Keith Halloran, a Democrat candidate for the New Hampshire House, posted in a Facebook thread about the plane crash that killed former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens, “Just wish Sarah and Levy [sic] were on board.”  New Hampshire State Representative Timothy Horrigan replied Wednesday, “Well a dead Palin wd [sic] be even more dangerous than a live one … she is all about her myth & if she was dead she cldn’ t [sic] commit any more gaffes.” Rather surprisingly, Blow took issue with this Saturday: Then there’s the Democratic state representative, Timothy Horrigan, from New Hampshire. After Ted Stevens, the former Alaska senator, was killed in a plane crash this week, Keith David Halloran, a New Hampshire Democrat, posted this message on his Facebook page: “Just wish Sarah and Levy were on board,” clearly referring to Sarah Palin and Levi Johnston. To that, Horrigan responded: “Well a dead Palin wd be even more dangerous than a live one … she is all about her myth & if she was dead she cldn’t commit any more gaffes.” Seriously guys? I’m the first to say that I want to keep Palin as close to Russia and as far away from Washington as humanly possible, but debating the merits of her demise in a plane crash is heinous. Horrigan has since resigned. In reality, Blow was being surprisingly bipartisan in this column mocking the behavior of both Republicans and Democrats: Representative Charles Rangel of New York took to the House floor this week and delivered such a melodramatic diatribe that I thought any moment he would start belting “And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going” from “Dreamgirls.” Another is John McCain, who seems to be flirting with the über-tan “Jersey Shore” star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi (after having bonded with each other over tanning salon taxes in June). Snooki was arrested for disorderly conduct last month. This week, McCain told a Phoenix radio station that “I kind of think she might be too good-looking to go to jail.” A wink, wink from the dashing 73-year-old with the wispy locks. One bit of advice to Snooki: Don’t go to McCain’s home base in Arizona. The state is hostile to people of your current complexion. Blow continued his bipartisan excoriation right into his humorous conclusion: I say Justin Bieber for president. I know he was born in Canada, but since Republicans want to tinker with the Constitution anyway, why not? Besides, I’m not sure many would notice the difference. Bieber knows how to draw a crowd, get them all excited and then break their hearts. For vice president, maybe they could find a booster seat for Zahara Jolie-Pitt. She probably has about as much message discipline as Joe Biden. Besides, we need some African-birth-certificate drama for continuity. Nice piece, Charles. As you know, I rarely say that. Does Blow’s sudden bipartisanship indicate that even he is realizing what a joke Obama and the Democrats are? Don’t count it. This is likely a brief moment of sanity while most are on summer vacation. You can bet your bottom dollar Blow will be back to exclusively bashing Republicans as the midterm elections near. Stay tuned.

USA Today Incorrectly Reports Reggie Bush Apologized to USC Athletic Director

New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush has caused a lot of problems for his alma mater, University of Southern California. While playing at USC, Bush accepted cash and gifts from a wannabee sports agent which later caused the NCAA to impose harsh sanctions upon USC including four years of probation and banishment from the 2010 and 2011 bowl games. Because of his actions, Bush apologized to the current USC athletic director, Pat Haden, according to David Leon Moore writing for USA Today . Only one “little” problem, Haden vehemently denies that Bush apologized to him. First the “apology” that never happened as misreported by USA Today: LOS ANGELES — Reggie Bush apologized to new Southern California athletics director Pat Haden and expressed tremendous regret for his actions that landed the school on NCAA probation. Haden says that in a 15-minute phone conversation the two men had last week, Bush, the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner who was found to have received illicit cash and benefits from a would-be sports marketer while starring for USC, wishes he could make amends to the school.  “He’s really contrite,” Haden says of Bush , who plays for the New Orleans Saints. “He knows he made a series of mistakes. It wasn’t just one mistake. It was a series of mistakes. “He told me, ‘If I could turn the clock back, I would. If I could give the Heisman Trophy back, I would.’ ” Okay, Bush was contrite according to Haden but is contrition really an apology? Perhaps David Leon Moore thinks so but Haden himself was apparently upset with that characterization according to the Los Angeles Times : USC Athletic Director Pat Haden said Friday that he spoke last week with a contrite Reggie Bush , but that embattled 2005 Heisman Trophy winner did not apologize for actions that played a major role in the NCAA’s decision to hit the school with severe sanctions. That contradicts a report by USA Today that Haden had said Bush apologized for those actions. “Never did he say I’m sorry or I apologize,” Haden said. “Never did he say, ‘I lied to the NCAA or I took stuff.’ ” Ouch! So how did Moore so completely misinterpret a lame expression of contrition into an apology? Did he even ask Pat Haden if it was an apology? Will Moore apologize for misreporting an “apology?” It will be interesting to check the sports section of USA Today next week.  And don’t feel too puffed up about getting to the truth about this “apology,” Los Angeles Times. After all you recently couldn’t even be bothered to report the landslide margin of victory of Proposition C in Missouri while stating that it was “Republicans” who rejected the ObamaCare insurance mandate.

Colorado Springs Is PTSD City: Scenes from Vanguard

In this scene from Vanguard's “War Crimes,” correspondent Kaj Larsen investigates why Colorado Springs has become ground zero in what may be a coming tsunami: the alarming rise in the number of soldiers who have been traumatized by war and are now accused of bringing the violence home. Since the start of the Iraq War, 17 soldiers from nearby Fort Carson have been charged with murder or attempted murder. Of the more than 2 million men and women who have served in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as many as a third of them may now have post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. A growing number of these vets are being charged with violent crimes, and Kaj travels to prisons and mental health facilities in Arizona, Colorado and Oregon to hear their stories. “War Crimes” premieres Wednesday, July 7 at 10/9c on Current TV. “Vanguard,” airing weekly on Current TV Wednesdays at 10/9c, is a no-limits documentary series whose award-winning correspondents put themselves in extraordinary situations to immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Whaling ‘Peace Plan’ Talks Fall Apart – Japan Unwilling to Say When It Will Stop Killing Whales

photo: Chris via flickr It’s rare that a whaling peace plan falling apart could be a good thing, but for considering that the one being negotiated in Morocco, which would effectively sanction the actions of whaling nations Japan, Norway, and Iceland, would mean that more whales would die, perhaps it’s a good thing. Which is all a way of saying that delegates at the Internation… Read the full story on TreeHugger
