James Franco Chalks Up Another Unconventional Side Hustle With Telenovela

Oscar nominee will appear on Nick at Nite’s ‘Hollywood Heights’ this summer. By Jocelyn Vena James Franco Photo: Neilson Barnard/ Getty Images At this point, few things James Franco does in his career surprise anyone. But his latest gig might be an exception. The Oscar-nominated actor has agreed to appear on the Nick at Nite telenovela “Hollywood Heights.” The gig was announced by the network on Wednesday, but further details about his appearance on the show were not released. The show will kick off in June, according to Vulture , and like any good telenovela, it will air five nights a week. Based on a Mexican soap opera, the show revolves around a shy girl who befriends a rock star (her crush) after winning a songwriting competition and ultimately becomes a pop star herself. This is the latest of many unusual side hustles the actor has acquired recently. Aside from attending college at several prestigious universities across the country over the last few years, the actor has also appeared several times on the small screen since he bid his role as Daniel Desario on “Freaks and Geeks” goodbye 12 years ago. He also appeared on the soap opera “General Hospital,” where he played an artist with mob ties. His character’s name? Simply, Franco. In 2011, he hosted the Academy Awards alongside Anne Hathaway. While he had been nominated for his work in “127 Hours” that year, his performance as the show’s host was met with mixed reviews. He also appeared on the NBC game show “Minute to Win It” along with Aron Ralston, whom he portrayed in “127 Hours.” They played to benefit a charity. He is a published author and a film critic and worked behind the lens on several projects, including 2011’s “Three’s Company: The Drama,” based on the hit sitcom from the 1970s, which was screened at Sundance that year. In addition to several multimedia projects, he shot music videos for R.E.M. for their tracks “Blue” and “That Someone Is You.” He also appeared in a music video for his own musical project, Kalup and Franco . While he pursues some of his more unusual side projects, he is also attached to several movies, including “Maladies,” “Lovelace,” “Oz: The Great and Powerful” and the currently in production “Spring Breakers,” with Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens. Rutgers Student Dharun Ravi Found Guilty In CyberBullying Case

Ravi could get up to 10 years in jail for spying on his roommate, Tyler Clementi. By Gil Kaufman Tyler Clementi Photo: Facebook A jury found former Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi guilty of hate crimes and invasion of privacy on Friday (March 16), bringing to an end a case that helped spark a national debate on cyberbullying. Ravi was accused of setting up a webcam to spy on his roommate, Tyler Clementi , as Clementi engaged in a consensual sexual encounter with another man in the pair’s Rutgers dorm room. Clementi leaped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in New York three days after learning that Ravi viewed the encounter and, according to testimony, invited others to watch and discuss what he saw online. According to The New York Times, in addition to the hate crimes, the jury found Ravi guilty of tampering with evidence and witnesses because of his efforts to change Twitter and text messages in which he had encouraged others to watch the webcam footage. Ravi, 20, faced 15 counts of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, tampering with evidence and a witness and hindering apprehension. The jury concluded that Ravi had not intended to intimidate Clementi on the first night that he secretly switched on the webcam to watch his roommate’s actions. But they concluded that Clementi had reason to believe that he was targeted because he was gay (based on the language in some of the texts), and on one count, the jury found that Ravi knew Clementi, 18, would feel intimidated by his actions. Because he was found guilty on at least one question of whether his actions rose to the level of bias discrimination, Ravi could face the maximum penalty of up to 10 years in jail and deportation to his native India. “These acts were purposeful, they were intentional and they were planned,” prosecutor Julia L. McClure told the jury on the first day of the trial, which lasted three weeks and concluded with two days of deliberation by the jury. Later in the trial, she told the jury that Ravi “was bothered by Tyler Clementi’s sexual orientation.” In a rare instance, almost none of the facts in the case were in dispute, as Ravi’s lawyers agreed that their client had set up the webcam and then gone to a friend’s room and viewed Clementi kissing the unidentified man. They also did not deny that Ravi sent Twitter and text messages to others describing what he’d seen and urging them to watch a second viewing. Ravi’s attorneys painted their client as an immature college student who acted thoughtlessly and made a mistake, but denied that he’d been spurred by homophobia. “He hasn’t lived long enough to have any experience with homosexuality or gays,” attorney Steven Altman said during closing arguments. “He doesn’t know anything about it. He just graduated high school.” Clementi’s suicide set off a national debate about bullying and intimidation of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth the resulted in public messages of support from everyone from openly gay talk show host Ellen DeGeneres to singer Ciara, “America’s Next Top Model” personality Jay Manuel, President Obama, “One Tree Hill” actress Sophia Bush and “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe . Talk That Talk: Billboard Pens An Open Letter To BOTH Rihanna And Chris Brown About How Their Relationship Affects Others

Just when you thought the controversy would finally come to an end… This morning the official word came down that Rihanna and Chris Brown will be collaborating on a remix to her song “Cake”. The announcement stirred up a isht-storm of controversy that seemed to re-ignite the fire that was lit more than 3 years ago when we first learned that Rih-Rih had caught Breezy’s fade. Many folks still feel that Chris Brown needs to be FURTHER punished for his actions and should not be basking in the glory of public forgiveness. Billboard Magazine seems to agree with that general line of thinking and decided to pen and open letter to the two love-struck superstars in order to help them see the “error of their ways”. Both letters are pretty long so we’ve taken snippets for you to gloss over. Take a look after the flip.

Sherri Shepherd Defends Chris Brown on The View, Calls Singer a "Role Model"

Sherri Shepherd is on Team Breezy. The View host has been vocal in defense of Chris Brown before, so it’s no surprise that she stood up for the star in the wake of this week’s Grammy lovefest backlash . All Brown did was show up at the award show, perform and win. No controversy at all. Yet his mere presence at the event after his 2009 attack on Rihanna upset many. While Shepherd criticized female fans who Tweet about how they’d let Chris beat them all night (among other things), Shepherd defended Brown from criticism. He may even be a role model, she says. Why? Sherri Shepherd Defends Chris Brown “There may be a child in a situation of going through abuse that Chris Brown has gone through. His mother was abused right in front of his very eyes six years before this happened to Rihanna. He used to wet his pants from the fear,” Shepherd says. “He was a victim! He became an offender. He did what the courts told him to do. He went to 52 weeks, a year of domestic prevention counseling.” That’s all true, and she makes a strong case. But on the flip side, critics will point to the (perceived) utter lack of responsibility Brown has taken for his actions. Behind-the-scenes blowups, arrogance and a lack of remorse (real or otherwise) contribute to the lack of forgiveness in people’s eyes. Not heartlessness. What do you think? Is Chris Brown a role model?

Terrell Owens: Shirtless, Nearly Broke!

Terrell Owens, impossibly taut at age 38, poses shirtless in the new GQ . In addition to losing his shirt, he reveals that he lost nearly $80 million in career earnings. Now out of football and running out of money, he appears desperate. When people text him to ask where he is these days, Owens replies back : “I’m in hell.” Sad to hear that anyone feels that way. But is it his own fault? Terrell Owens blames the media for not giving him a chance to rehab his injury, and blames agent Drew Rosenhaus for not protecting him from a bad business deal. Owens earned around $80 million in his NFL career, but has found himself in deep financial trouble, despite never spending lavishly. How does that happen exactly? It’s not a matter of having lived too large, he insists. While he indeed racked up a few homes that milliond, the issue, he says, was being loyal and trusting to a fault. Owens said financial advisers recommended by Rosenhaus lost his money in highly leveraged (some borderline illegal) ventures and the housing market collapse. “I hate myself for letting this happen,” Owens told GQ. “I believed that they had my back when they said, ‘You take care of the football, and we’ll do the rest.'” “And in the end, they just basically stole from me.” It’s a sad tale, but this is also a guy with four baby mamas and no job – can’t blame your financial advisers for that – and whose brash self-absorption is unparalleled.

Miley Cyrus Licks Penis Cake for Boyfriend’s Birthday

Liam Hemsworth turned 22 years old last week and those close to the actor celebrated with a party Saturday evening at Club Icon in Los Angeles. It was your basic festive occasion, with one notable exception that is now making headlines for Miley Cyrus: the singer, reported by onlookers to have been drinking heavily all night, got up close and VERY personal with her boyfriend’s birthday cake. Which was shaped like a penis. TMZ has posted photos of Miley squatting, sticking out her tongue and posing provocatively at the base of the phallic creation. At this point, we almost admire Cyrus for legitimately not caring what others say about her. Consider just a few of her actions when cameras were around: She smoked salvia out of a bong . She joked about being a pot head . She posed both topless and in weird poses with her dad for Vanity Fair . What do you make of Miley’s latest antics? Just a young gal having fun? Or another example of the role model not understanding her influence on fans? [Photo: WENN.com]

Kim Kardashian: Helping in Haiti

Might Kim Kardashian actually be using her fame for the benefit of someone else for a change? Or is her PR team simply orchestrating opportunities to improve her floundering image? The answer is most likely a combination of each, but the facts are these: Kim is currently in Haiti – along with Kris Jenner, designer Donna Karen and actresses Patricia Arquette and Maria Bello – as part of We Advance, an organization that aims to “advance the health, safety and well being of women throughout Haiti,” according to its website. “She’s been there for two days,” an insider tells Us Weekly . “She says it’s amazing!” Kardashian also served the homeless for Thanksgiving last month and while it’s impossible not to doubt the motives of this reality star’s every move, at least these causes are being helped in some way through her actions. No matter how self-serving they may be at their core.

What Kevin Spacey Thinks About Using Cell Phones in Theaters

While there’s hope that one idiotic theater in Washington encouraging audiences to text during movies dies a speedy death, take heart in the actions of new Movieline hero Kevin Spacey . The actor took a stand at a recent Sydney performance of Richard III when a rude theatergoer answered their cell phone during the play. “Spacey, the would-be Duke of Gloucester, singled out the phone owner and bellowed ‘Tell them we’re busy!’,” reports the UK Telegraph. “The audience erupted in support.” Sigh. If only actors could leap off the screen to do the same in cineplexes. [ Telegraph via Movie City News ]
