Brazil’s Lula Slams "Gringo" Protests of Amazon Dam

Photo via EyeBrazil Brazil’s proposed construction of what would be the third largest hydroelectric dam on the planet has drawn ire from environmental groups the world over. The planned dam at Belo Monte , protestors say, will flood and destroy much of the region’s plant and animal life, as well as displace the indigenous peoples there. PETA Offers Reward in Senseless Killing of Seals

Image credit: SPCA I’ve never been a huge fan of PETA’s wilder stunts. From complaining about Obama’s “execution” of flies , to teaming up with “octomom” to encourage spaying and neutering , the group has often chosen headline-grabbing sensationalism over substantive debate. (Admittedly quite successfully!) But whatever I think of their more controversial tactics, there is no doubt they are staunch and tireless defenders … Read the full story on TreeHugger

MoGO iPhone App Helps Citizens Report Oiled Wildlife in Gulf

Image via MoGO A new iPhone app is helping turn citizens into assistants for rescue workers in the Gulf of Mexico. Called MoGO – short for Mobile Gulf Observatory – users can take photos of oiled or dead wildlife, tar balls and oil slicks and upload them into the database which pinpoints their location for rescue workers. The free app gives untrained citizens a way to significantly help in the rescue effort, and gives trained volunteers and scientists much needed help in keeping track of impacted wildlife…. "Green Britain Day" May Be Greenwash. But What’s Wrong with Being French?

Image credit: Ecotricity British wind developer Ecotricity, and French nuclear giant EDF, have already clashed over EDF’s co-opting of a green Union Jack flag . The resulting spat even caused Ecotricity CEO Dale Vince to rename the EDF-sponsored “Green Britain Day” as National Greenwash Day . It looks like the row is set to resume as the “holiday” rolls around again. Interestingly (and perhaps smartly, from a purely t… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Is It Time We Maximise Our Ecological Impact? Being Less Bad is Not Enough

Image credit: Pasty Muncher I’ve been thinking some more about why individual environmental action is not enough . It’s not just that the metric for success—personal reductions in our impact, as opposed to collective—is on the wrong scale. It’s the wrong metric too. We are spending so much time worrying about how to reduce our impact, and be less bad, we are loosing sight of the fact that we can’t just slow the destruction. We have to reverse it too. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Crazy Christian Blames American Idol Ratings on Ellen’s Sexuality

American Idol experienced a decrease in ratings this season. New judge Ellen DeGeneres is a lesbian. Clearly, says Gary McCullough, the director of the Christian Newswire , these two facts are related. In a press release today, he wrote: I am confident that the producers of American Idol will… find a dozen other reasons for the drop in ratings. After all, what successful television producer could have a clue what wholesomeness is as long as they see promoting homosexuality as a virtue. If one of the judges was an abortion activist, or a political right winger and continued to insert comments in line with their activism, the same criticism would be true, and the show would suffer. What a great point. Ellen once joked on air about having loved a woman – that’s the exact same thing as a pro-choice judge telling a contestant: “You really killed that song, the same way women across the country should be free to kill their unborn babies.” McCullough added: Network television producers may or may not stop promoting homosexuality; but for certain they will learn to keep homosexual activism separate from the cash-cow of “family entertainment.” There is of course the insane possibility that Hollywood will forsake ratings… and continue down the path of change. Perhaps next we will see the pro-pedophilia group NAMBLA use its influence in Hollywood to have Dancing with the Stars seat Roman Polanski as a judge. Yes, he just compared homosexuality to pedophilia and statutory rape. This genius makes unassailable arguments. There’s no way season nine ratings were down because the contestants were boring, and the key demographic for Idol – a singing competition whose main, highly-rated season eight attraction was Adam Lambert – is clearly people that have a problem with gays. What do you think? Did Ellen’s sexuality contribute to the show’s lackluster ratings?

Reinventing Memorial Day: Remarkable Series in Fast Company

Steve McCallion writes a remarkable series in Fast Company asking “Why has Memorial Day, like so many of our national holidays, been reduced to appliance sales, fast food specials, and vacation deals?” He starts with Reinventing Memorial Day: Beyond the Mattress Blowout Sale : In this era of convenience and instant gratification–when mobile screens hold more interest than parades; when regulations are needed to prevent texting while driving; when TV idols are created in the time it takes to sing a song–it’s difficul… Read the full story on TreeHugger

The Plastiki’s Quest, and Questioning Plastic

Images via The Plastiki Ever since the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it seems the barometers of success and modernity within society have been measured by our interaction, or rather lack of interaction, with the natural world. The formula appears to be simple: The more we package, mechanize, and force nature into the background, the more developed and evolved our society will become. What we produce and consume has become a representation of our values and identities. The almost automated desire to take nature and manipulate it to m… Read the full story on TreeHugger
