‘Boyz N The Hood’ Stars Hailed ‘Classic Movie’ Back In 1991

MTV News looks back on our interview with the all-star cast and director as the South Central L.A. tale was hitting theaters 20 years ago. By Rob Markman Ice Cube in “Boyz N The Hood” Photo: Columbia Pictures In a 1991 interview with MTV News to promote the just-released “Boyz N the Hood,” Laurence Fishburne seemed to know what kind of impact the coming-of-age story would have. “John Singleton has made a classic movie,” the actor said. Twenty years later, fans are still singing its praises. This past Tuesday, “Boyz N the Hood” celebrated its 20-year anniversary , and on July 19, the film will be re-released in Blu-ray format. The film, starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Laurence Fishburne, is set in South Central, Los Angeles, a California neighborhood notorious for gang violence. At the center of the film is Tre Styles (Gooding Jr.), who tries to balance his father’s (Fishburne) life lessons with the harsh realities of the ‘hood in which he lived. Then there are half-brothers Doughboy (Cube) and Ricky Baker (Chestnut), two characters who couldn’t be more different. Doughboy, a stone-cold gangster, has street respect but very few prospects. His brother Ricky, however, is a young father and a star high school football player fielding sports scholarships from multiple colleges. In the end, Ricky’s bright future is brought to a dark close when he’s gunned down in an alleyway. “Well, this is the film that I initially went to film school to make,” director Singleton explained to MTV News in the same 1991 interview, days after the film hit theaters. “I had never seen films that reflected where I was coming from growing up in L.A.” “There are so many messages in the film, but if they go and take one message away, it’s to keep the love in the family. As long as the love is circulating around, it’ll be OK,” Gooding Jr. said. “It’s a new kind of perspective,” Fishburne added. Even Cube, who made his Hollywood debut in “Boyz N the Hood,” knew back then that the movie would be impactful. “I think we got a real good film. Just to show black people on the screen being people and not just images, as far as not a sports player or a hat and a gun,” he said. “You fall in love with these characters, and it’s real deep when something happens to them.” And that’s why 20 years later, we’re still watching. Taylor Lautner Has ‘Swag’ In ‘Abduction,’ Director Says

‘They’re gonna see a whole different Taylor Lautner from what Jacob is in the ‘Twilight’ pictures,’ John Singleton promises. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Taylor Lautner in “Abduction” Photo: Lionsgate Taylor Lautner will surprise people in his forthcoming film “Abduction,” according to John Singleton. The renowned director says that Lautner has abandoned his onscreen “Twilight” werewolf alter ego to play a butt-kicking teen in the film, due out in September. “I put him through his paces and I can say this to the MTV audience: They’re gonna see a whole different Taylor Lautner from what Jacob is in the ‘Twilight’ pictures,” Singleton told MTV News. “My goal as a director was to work with him as an actor, for him to have something that’s a different character.” So, what did Singleton draw out of his actor? Singleton said he wanted Lautner’s character to be “strong and charismatic. I’ve done some stuff that I’m sure all the young ladies will really love … and it’s beyond taking his shirt off. It’s about him having a different kind of swag than he does as Jacob. In this movie, he’s Nathan Harper and he’s a kickass dude in this movie.” The director explained that while Lautner plays tough in the flick, he was quite the softie on set, taking the time out to thank his fans for stopping by to watch him in action. “Taylor’s the most famous actor I’ve ever worked with in my whole career,” Singleton said. “When we were shooting this movie, we had 500 to 600 girls and their mothers off the set, trying to get on the set, trying to be around, which was cool.” Singleton said that the star handled all the attention like the seasoned pro that he is. “It was really funny because, you know, after we worked all these hours, he’d go out and he’d graciously shake peoples’ hands and sign autographs,” he said. “He’s phenomenal. I call him a trooper; he’s a real soldier.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Abduction.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

‘Harry Potter’ World Cup Recap: It’s Down To Ron And Snape!

Find out the winner during MTV News’ live stream at the ‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2′ red carpet, starting at 4:30 p.m. ET. By Eric Ditzian Alan Rickman as Professor Snape Photo: Warner Bros. In the beginning, there were 64 wizards, witches, elves and ghosts. Each one had been thrown into a cutthroat online tournament, decided by the public and subject to the passions and prejudices of die-hard fans, all to come up with the definitive answer to the question: Who is the greatest “Harry Potter” character of all time? Now that fantastical conundrum is down to just two people: potions master Severus Snape and Gryffindor great Ron Weasley. As of this writing, the two wizards are locked in the heated final match of MTV News’ “Harry Potter” World Cup . Voting is still going on, and the winner will be announced on Monday evening (July 11) during our live stream of the New York red-carpet premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” which begins at 4:30 p.m. ET. It’s a remarkable feat that both men are left standing, considering that over 7 million votes have been cast throughout the four weeks of the tournament. Who would have guessed that Harry Potter himself would get chucked from the tournament in the Elite Eight, a victim of Snape’s fanbase and his remarkable character arc? Big bad Lord Voldemort didn’t even make it that far, losing in the third round to onetime Azkaban prisoner Sirius Black! And Cedric Diggory, hardly a first-tier character, was nonetheless thought to be a potential Cinderella story (given that Robert Pattison portrayed him onscreen). Yet “Potter” fans appeared to unite and overwhelm the “Twilight” set , sending Cedric to a third-round ouster. After upsets, crushing defeats and overwhelming victories, the Final Four fell into place late last week: Snape vs. Hogwarts witch Hermione Granger , and Ron Weasley vs. Black . Hermione may have been the smartest witch of her age and Ron’s cherished gal pal, but none of that was enough to vanquish Snape — the man who killed Dumbledore but is ultimately redeemed by the series’ end. Snape ended up with 62.7 percent of the vote, compared to Hermione’s 37.3 percent. The competition between Ron and Black was much closer. One wizard is Harry’s best friend; the other was Harry’s dad’s best friend. And in the end, barely one percentage point separated the two characters, with Ron ultimately surging forward for the win. So where does that leave us in the final matchup? Snape obviously has the momentum, given his commanding victory over Hermione. Ron has got to be looked at as weakened, considering how he barely survived his Final Four matchup. But he’s the last of the Big Three still alive, and fans of Hermione could well shift their allegiances to Ron. Anything can happen, though Rupert Grint, who plays Ron , isn’t holding out much hope. When we caught up with the actor on Sunday, before the finals had been solidified, he expressed skepticism that Ron could ever defeat Snape. “I don’t think I could do that — I mean, Snape is a great character,” he laughed. We’re streaming live from the red carpet at the New York premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” on Monday (July 11) at 4:30 p.m. ET. Transformers Source Confirms Shia LaBeouf/Megan Fox Hook Up

Shia LaBeouf may come across as a sort of shady dirtball who kisses and tells. But an on-set source says this about the Transformers star: He’s not a liar. Get a room, Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf. Wait, you allegedly already did! Following the actor’s admission that he slept with Megan Fox during shooting on the movie’s sequel a couple years ago, an insider confirms to Us Weekly : “Yes, Megan and Shia hooked up… I think they were drawn together because it was so ugly working on that film,” adding that Fox was NOT dating Brian Austin Green at the time because “they had a 10-month break before getting back together.” This mole also says Fox was not fired from the franchise. She simply said “enough and quit.” [Photo: WENN.com]

Really Wild Thing: Charlie Sheen Admits to Steroid Use

Charlie Harper may soon be killed off Two and a Half Men , but this is far more troubling: Charlie Sheen has officially murdered our belief in the fastball of Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn. The pitcher arrived on the scene in 1989’s Major League , straight out of the California penal league. He was armed with an impressive, albeit erratic, right arm. Now, though, Sheen has lifted the curtain on how he prepared for one of his most iconic roles. In an interview with Sports Illustrated , the actor says went on a steroid cycle for “six to eight weeks” and it helped. He told the magazine: “You can print this, I don’t give a f-ck. My fastball went from 79 [mph] to like 85.” The Indians did win the pennant in Vaughn’s rookie season, but he may now be more shamed than fellow baseball cheats Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds. Brooke Mueller Demands Charlie Sheen’s Money

Brooke Mueller was found wandering the streets of Maui this month, clutching cash. But apparently it wasn’t enough, as the ex-wife of Charlie Sheen has submitted court documents that demand Warner Bros. withhold $55,000 per month from whatever it owes the actor; Mueller is not confident he will be able to meet his child support obligations. Sheen is not actually behind on his payments, mind you. But insiders say Mueller wants to take every precaution she can and has asked the studio to wire the monthly figure directly into her bank account. Hopefully that will give the troubled star something to smile over. As you can see above, crying appears to be Brooke’s default action during every appearance on The World According to Paris . Cory Monteith Parade magazine 2011

When it comes to his present and his past, Monteith, 29, admits, “I#39;m lucky on so many counts – I#39;m lucky to be alive.” Football – and singing – star at William McKinley High School, Finn Hudson is quite a role model, as evidenced every week on Glee. But he#39;s also quite a work of fiction. A precocious child whose parents divorced when he was 7,

Britney Spears Was ‘Super Game’ For ‘I Wanna Go’ Video

Director Chris Marrs Piliero talks about working with Brit and his favorite scene from the fun clip. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Hugh Swingle Britney Spears in her “I Wanna Go” music video Photo: Jive Britney Spears looks like she’s having a blast in her new “I Wanna Go” video . It’s full of fun pop-culture references and has Brit seeking vengeance against the paparazzi . Now, the director of the kitschy clip, Chris Marrs Piliero, has opened up about working with the pop megastar. “Meeting Britney for the first time was really rad. She was really cool. I don’t think anyone has the right to be a diva, but there are some artists out there, they’ve been in the game long enough [that] if any one of those artists … might have the permission to be a diva, she definitely has earned it — and she wasn’t whatsoever,” he told the MTV Buzzworthy blog . So what’s Spears like? “She’s super polite; she’s ridiculously polite. She’s soft-spoken,” he said. “She’s really cute. The way she talks and interacts, you want to hug her. She was super professional, super game. … It was rad. It was awesome working with her. She’s a rad chick.” Another highlight of the shoot for Piliero was working with “Weeds” star Guillermo Diaz on one of the final scenes. In the last part of the video, Spears and the actor are riding in a convertible in the desert as Brit dances around. Diaz displays his comedic chops by doing things like pouring milk all over himself. “It was definitely a funny moment of the shoot. We let the cameras roll, and the reaction that you see from Britney is definitely a genuine reaction,” the director recalled. “When I was going through the footage, I loved the way that she responded. It’s so genuine and so funny. It’s perfect [and] it definitely is a perfect description of how we all felt about that scene.” Let us know what you think of Britney’s “I Wanna Go” video in the comments!
