Jim Carrey Responds to Gun Control Critics: Calm Down!

Jim Carrey may be known for his sense of humor, but the actor has settled on one topic recently that is anything but a laughing matter: Gun control. After posting a Funny or Die video that mocked gun advocates , the actor has been under siege from many Conservatives, led, as you might expect, by Fox News . Now, in attempt to re-open a reasonable discourse, Carrey has penned an Op-Ed for The Huffington Post. “These mass shootings and daily body counts on your local news are terrible tragedies,” the actor writes . “The utter devastation that must be endured by the victims’ families is unfathomable. “These horrific events are also an invitation for us to become more civilized and to deal with our addiction and entitlement to violence. Not to shut our eyes and ears and scream at those with a different opinion than ours to ‘f–k off and go back to Canada.'” Carrey responds to assertions that he’s a hypocrite by saying his bodyguards are not permitted to carry a large magazine and then states in all capital letters: “NO ONE IS ASKING ANYONE TO GIVE UP THEIR RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS.” Instead, the man behind Ace Ventura insists his battle is against “the type of arms, the easy access and the means with which to cause massive devastation.” Carrey also scoffs at “bullies” who attempt to discredit him due to his profession, pointing out that Ronald Regan was also an actor. Aghast at the “level of hatred heaped upon” him, Carrey concludes: No one is allowed to own a bazooka. In a movie theater an assault rifle with a 100-round drum magazine can cause just as much damage. So don’t just sit there and do nothing. Contact your representatives and let them know that their jobs depend upon change. It won’t always be someone else’s kids in the line of fire. The time is now. LET YOUR HEART BE HEARD.

Jim Carrey eBay Photo: Profit to Be Used for Gun Purchase

Give at least one eBay user points for creativity. With Jim Carrey under backlash for posing a Funny or Die video (below) that calls out gun owners and mocks former NRA President Charlton Heston, someone on that website posted an signed picture of the actor Wednesday. Read the listing: “Jim Carrey Autographed 8X10 Photo So I Can Afford a Gun!” Jim Carrey “Cold Dead Hand” Spoof A black-and-white shot of Carrey with the inscription ““Spank you very much!,” the item had attracted 103 bidders at one point and the price had been driving to $860. But then the description changed and the bids disappeared, as eBay seemingly got involved in the selling. “I’m selling this Jim Carrey autographed B&W photo (mint condition) for purposes I cannot explain because it might be against eBay’s Terms & Conditions,” wrote the user afterward. While the company has not spoken about the incident, users had plenty to say in the Comments section of the item, taking Carrey to task for his outspoken viewers. “In the hopes Carrey will see this: I will NOT be seeing KICK-ASS 2 when it is released,” one person wrote, while another added: “I would just like to encourage the winning bidder in this noble cause to bring the prize to the range for proper disposal.”

Amanda Knox: Prosecutors Look to Reinstate Conviction

Are Amanda Knox’s legal woes still hampering her? In 2011, the 25-year-old was released from an Italian prison after spending four years for allegedly murdering roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007. The earlier guilty conviction was overturned in a court of appeals and both Knox and her Italian boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito were released. Prosecutors want to re-instate their convictions, however. Knox, now a student at the Univ. of Washington, will not be present for Monday’s hearing. If prosecutors are successful, Knox and Sollecito will face a re-trial. If the Supreme Court upholds Knox and Sollecito’s acquittal, their legal battle is officially over. The Supreme Court is the third and final step in the process. We’ll soon know what her future holds, legally and finally.

Parents Force Teen to Hold Humiliating Sign as Punishment: Tough Love or Too Far?

Worried about their 13-year-old daughter’s increasingly disrespectful behavior, two parents decided to make her punishment humiliating and public. Gentry and Renee Nickell of Crestview, Fla., made her spend 90 minutes standing at a busy intersection with a hand-written sign describing her sins: The sign they made her hold says: “I’m a self-entitled teenager w/no respect for authority. I’m also super smart, yet I have 3 ‘D’s’ because I DON’T CARE.” Passing motorists saw the teen and took pictures with their phones. Some of the photos ended up on Facebook, where they were shared within the community. Someone called the cops, who showed up to talk to the teen and left after deciding that she was “aware of her punishment and she was not in any harm.” Now, however, the parents are feeling a little humiliation of their own. “I wasn’t even thinking about what the public was going to think,” her mom, Renee told the Northwest Florida Daily News . “I was thinking about our daughter.” “It was for her to be in the public and recognize what she had done.” “We spend so much focus on not wanting to hurt a child’s self esteem that we don’t do anything,” the Nickells said in a statement defending the punishment. “As they say, walk a mile in someone’s shoes,” the statement read. “We must undo at home what the world tries to tell her is better.” Renee Nickell said the family has had a hard time since Renee’s brother was killed in Afghanistan in December 2011. Her kids were close to him and his family. Since losing her uncle in the war, Renee’s 13-year-old girl has become much more defiant at home and at school, and her grades have dropped. “We just felt like she just kind of gave up,” Renee told the newspaper. Holding a sign in public wasn’t their first choice for punishment. They tried grounding her, but it didn’t help. They didn’t forbid her from attending church, they said, because that was supposed to reinforce strong values. They didn’t confiscate the teenager’s electronics because neither she nor their two younger children, ages 2 and 6, even have any, the couple said. “We just got to the point where we just didn’t know what else to do,” Renee said, then they heard about the sign idea from a Christian counselor. The girl’s dad stood next to her the whole time. “At the end, she gave me a hug in front of a police officer and she told me she was sorry,” Gentry said. But soon, the Nickells were surprised to find out that their daughter’s punishment had gone viral, and were shocked by the anger leveled at them. What do you think? Was a little tough love warranted in this case? Or did they go a little too far? Are they the worst parents ever? Discuss below.

Spring Breakers Director Labels James Franco a "Maniac"

Spring Breakers fared fairly well in a limited box office release last week. And the movie so far has generated a decent amount of attention because, well, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens get into a threesome. But director Harmony Korine has given fans another reason to go see this raunchy film: James Franco’s portrayal of a drug dealer named “Alien.” “I spent a year just sending him images and talking to him, designing the character,” Korine told Movie Fanatic of working with the actor on the role. “I never saw him do it. He didn’t want to rehearse. When he put in the cornrows and the gold teeth and I heard the accent… I was like ‘whoa.’ He was a maniac.” We presume he means that in the most flattering way possible. Visit Movie Fanatic now for the full exclusive interview with Korine and sound off: Will you be seeing Spring Breakers this weekend?

New ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Photos: To Boldly Go Where Every Man Has A Thousand-Yard Stare

Paramount has released two new Star Trek Into Darkness photos that don’t reveal anything about the plot or the true identity of  Benedict Cumberbatch’s  character, but they do underscore the tone that previous stills have established. In other words, set your phasers for intensity!   Taken in context with previously released photos, which I’ve posted below, the cast sure does seem to be processing some heavy stuff.  What do you think is at the end of all those thousand-yard stares? Khan? The last quinoa salad on the craft services table? The questionable future of the Star Trek franchise now that J.J. Abrams has thrown Starfleet over for Star Wars ? Can someone — anyone — please crack a smile? Thank you, Captain. More on Star Trek Into Darkness :  ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Identity Revealed?
