Sean Penn As Vince Vega? Paul Calderon As Jules Winnfield? ‘Pulp Fiction’ Could Have Been So Different

Twenty years after John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson , as Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield, became arguably the most iconic hitman duo in contemporary cinema, it’s hard to imagine any other actors tackling those roles — especially the Royale with Cheese conversation. But the new issue of Vanity Fair   serves as a reminder that their Pulp Fiction parts almost went to other actors.  The magazine’s annual Hollywood issue includes an oral history on the making of Quentin Tarantino’s  violent 1994 masterpiece that recalls Miramax chief Harvey Weinstein was seriously opposed to Travolta being cast as the marvelously mooky Vega.  “John Travolta was at that time as cold as they get,” Tarantino’s William Morris Endeavor agent Mike Simpson tells the magazine. “He was less than zero.” When Tarantino, who was dead-set on Travolta playing the role,  submitted a term sheet that included his final choice of actors for the movie, Weinstein approved all of his choices except for the onetime  Saturday Night Fever  star.  Two much more bankable actors,  Daniel Day-Lewis  and Bruce Willis , had read the script and expressed interest in playing Vega, and   Sean Penn and William Hurt were also on Weinstein’s short list. But Tarantino and his agent proved to be even more stubborn. When negotiations over Travolta came down to the wire, and Weinstein attempted to put off casting the actor,  Simpson told the movie mogul: “You’re going to agree to it right now, or there’s no deal.” Weinstein blinked, and former Miramax production head Richard Gladstein says that 20 minutes into a screening of the finished film, Harvey cracked, “I’m so glad I had the idea to cast John Travolta.” Jackson, on the other hand, almost lost the role to Paul Calderon  ( Out of Sight , 21 Grams ) and had to fly in for an eleventh-hour audition. He wasn’t happy about it, especially after one of the producers confused him with actor Laurence Fishburne ( The Matrix ). That actually turned out to be a good thing based on this distillation of the audition: “I sort of was angry, pissed, tired,” Jackson recalls. He was also hungry, so he bought a takeout burger on his way to the studio, only to find nobody there to greet him. “When they came back, a line producer or somebody who was with them said, ‘I love your work, Mr. Fishburne,’” says Jackson. “It was like a slow burn.  He doesn’t know who I am?  I was kind of like, Fuck it. At that point I really didn’t care.” Gladstein remembers Jackson’s audition: “In comes Sam with a burger in his hand and a drink in the other hand and stinking like fast food. Me and Quentin and Lawrence were sitting on the couch, and he walked in and just started sipping that shake and biting that burger and looking at all of us. I was scared shitless. I thought that this guy was going to shoot a gun right through my head. His eyes were popping out of his head. And he just stole the part.” Lawrence Bender adds, “He was the guy you see in the movie. He said, ‘Do you think you’re going to give this part to somebody else? I’m going to blow you motherfuckers away.’” Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter.  Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Studios Fork Over Big Cash For Super Bowl XLVII

The Super Bowl’s notoriously pricey ad spots already cost a chunk of change well into the seven figures last year and it’s set to head well northward for 30 seconds of airtime this Sunday. But that has not scared away movie studios from snapping up commercial time on Super Bowl XLVII. Studios will air ads for upcoming blockbusters including Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man 3 , J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness , Johnny Depp’s The Lone Ranger , James Franco and Michelle Williams’ Oz The Great And Powerful and Vin Diesel’s The Fast and the Furious 6 . Brad Pitt’s World War Z is slated for a pre-game spot. Disney’s The Lone Ranger , with a July release, is the pic with the longest wait-time before its theatrical release. Last year, 30 seconds on the sky high rated sports event cost $3.5 million, but that has jumped to a cool $4 million for a half-minute in the match-up between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. Among the non-studio ads set to air Sunday are spots from Chrysler, Tide, Best Buy, Coke and the new BlackBerry 10, according to Deadline. [ Sources: Huffington Post , Deadline ]

Oscar-Nominated ‘Gatekeepers’ Director Warns American Jews Cherish Israel ‘Too Much’

The director of Oscar-nominated documentary The Gatekeepers says he believes American Jews hold Israel on too high of a pedestal – something he believes could prove detrimental to the crisis-torn Middle Eastern country. Israeli filmmaker Dror Moreh told The Huff Post that the Jewish community in the United States view Israel as a “safe haven” nearly seven decades after the Holocaust and that American Jews are willing to support Israel despite the potential of becoming what he called an Apartheid state. Moreh’s acclaimed non-fiction feature spotlights six retired directors of Israel’s domestic spy agency, Shin Bet, exposing the organization’s targeted killings behind the Jewish state’s ongoing occupation of the Palestinian territories. The film has caused waves in both the Israel and the U.S. about the spy agency’s tactics. “There is something that I felt while I am here in America, that most of the majority of the Jewish population here are cherishing Israel,” Moreh told the Huff Post, adding that that strict adherence has lead many in the U.S. to the “wrong conclusion that they have to support Israel no matter what.” He said that orthodoxy is in fact, “damaging to the state of Israel.” “They don’t understand that we are going towards an Apartheid country,” said Moreh. “By not criticizing it, by accepting everything Israel does politically and especially towards the conflict, they are damaging their own goal, to protect the state of Israel as a safe haven for them.” Sony Pictures Classics opens The Gatekeepers in the U.S. beginning Friday, February 1st. This will be Jones’ first time performing for the Oscar ceremony. The song, which is nominated for an Original Song Oscar, contains lyrics by Ted writer-director Seth MacFarlane with music by Walter Murphy. “I had such a great time recording this song with Seth, and was thrilled to find out that it was nominated for an Oscar,” said Jones in a statement. “Getting to perform it at such a prestigious event, which my friend is hosting, is a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Jones hit the world stage with the 2002 release of her debut “Come Away With Me,” which sold more than 10 million copies and earned her five Grammy Awards. follow-ups include successful solo albums – “Feels Like Home” (2004), “Not Too Late” (2007), “The Fall” (2009), and “Little Broken Hearts” (2012) – as well as two albums with her country collective, The Little Willies.  The 2010 compilation “…Featuring Norah Jones” included collaborations with an array of artists such as Willie Nelson, Outkast, Herbie Hancock and Foo Fighters.  Jones’s songs have been featured many times on motion picture soundtracks, and she made her feature film acting debut in My Blueberry Nights in 2007. The 2013 Oscar telecast will take place Sunday, February 24 in Hollywood, hosted by Seth MacFarlance. Everybody Needs A Best Friend Lyrics: My words are lazy
 My thoughts are hazy
But this is one thing I’m sure of
 Everybody needs a best friend
I’m happy I’m yours You got a double
Who brings you trouble
And though you’re better without me
 Everybody needs a best friend
I’m happy I’m yours A fool could see decidedly
 That you’re a ten and I’m a three
A royal brie is what you need
So how did you come to be stuck with a bummer like me Oh you got a headful of someone dreadful
But have that someone who adores you
 Everybody needs a best friend
I’m happy I’m yours A fool could see decidedly
 That you’re a ten and I’m a three
A royal brie is what you need
So how did you come to be stuck with a bummer like me Oh you got a headful of someone dreadful
And yet lest that someone who adores you
 Everybody needs a best friend
I’m happy I’m yours

Disney’s Mysterious ‘1952’ Morphs Into ‘Tomorrowland’

From yester-year – in this case, 1952 – to tomorrow, Disney is so far only offering a glimpse into Brad Bird ‘s live-action feature in the form of a new title. Previously known as 1952 , the studio said it will now be titled Tomorrowland , just like the land meant to be a peak into the future. Tomorrowland was one of the five “original lands” that debuted with the Disneyland park in Anaheim, California in 1955. George Clooney will star in the film, which Damon Lindelof ( Prometheus ) and Bird co-wrote and is slated for a mid-December 2014 release. Home to famed attractions, Space Mountain and Star Tours, perhaps Tomorrowland holds secrets about the film version of its namesake. But the studio is maintaining a shroud of mystery though throwing out tidbits. Its official announcement follows: The Walt Disney Studios has announced that its live-action release previously known as 1952 will be titled Tomorrowland. The film will be released domestically on December 19, 2014. George Clooney ( The Descendants ) is set to star. Tomorrowland is written by Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird from a concept by Lindelof and Jeff Jensen. Lindelof ( Star Trek , Lost ,  Prometheus ) will produce and Bird ( The Incredibles ,  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol ) will produce and direct. Disney attractions have begat Disney blockbusters through the years. Longtime classic ride Pirates of the Caribbean of course morphed into a long-running franchise that has starred Johnny Depp worth billions and Guillermo del Toro is working on a second installment of the Haunted Mansion , which first hit theaters in 2003. Classic mountaintop attraction, the Matterhorn in Disneyland’s Fantasyland is said to be the basis for a project titled The Hill . [ Source: THR ]

‘jOBS’ Role Sent Ashton Kutcher To Hospital

Ashton Kutcher not only took on Steve Jobs’ persona as a tech magnate, he also adopted the late Apple founder’s alleged fruitarian diet in preparation for the role, which sent him to the hospital, the actor revealed following the premiere of jOBS at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend. [ Related: SUNDANCE WINNERS: ‘Fruitvale’ & ‘Blood Brother’ WIN Top Prizes x 2 ] Often considered a subset of veganism, fruitarianism is a diet that consists of fruit, nuts and seeds, solely without animal products, vegetables and grains. Motivations for fruitarianism range from ethical, health, religious and environmental or other reasons. “First of all, the fruitarian diet can lead to, like, severe issues,” Kutcher told USA Today. “I went to the hospital like two days before we started shooting the movie. I was like doubled over in pain. My pancreas levels were completely out of whack. It was really terrifying…considering everything.” Jobs died of pancreatic cancer in October 2011. Kutcher said he spent hundreds of hours going over tapes of Jobs hoping to master his mannerisms and hunched walk. The actor, who has a massive Twitter following, said he felt close to the late magnate in part because they share an affinity for the “tech space.” “He’s a guy that failed and got back on the horse,” noted Kutcher. “I think we can all sort of relate to that in some place in our life where we are moving forward with something and we fall down. You have to have the guts to get back up and go again. I think I share that as well.” jOBS opens with the period Steve Jobs founded Apple in a garage in Palo Alto, California up to when he launched the iPod in 2001. Oscar-winning writer of The Social Network , Aaron Sorkin, is also planning a Jobs biopic based on Walter Isaacson’s bestselling biography. The Sorkin version will reportedly comprise of three extended scenes, according to The Guardian, each leading up to a pivotal product launch. [ Sources: The Guardian , USA Today ]
