Snow White and the Huntsman Reigns Atop Box Office; What Did You Watch?

Brava to the dewy-cheeked Kristen Stewart , who opened Snow White and the Huntsman , the weekend’s number one movie, by swinging a sword and championing girl power without having to kiss a single vampire! (Those two hunky human suitors and the riveting fabulosity that was Charlize Theron didn’t hurt either.) Nice to see girls ruling while boys drooled over the box office — well, their male-driven movies ( Men in Black 3 , Avengers , Battleship ), anyway. Tell us what you saw this weekend as we go to the receipts! 1. Snow White and the Huntsman Gross: $56,255,000 (new) Screens: 3,773 (PSA: $14,910) Weeks: 1 Well, well, well. Stewart’s first big non- Twilight movie made a strong showing over the weekend, outdoing Men in Black 3 ’s debut with the one-two-three punch of KStew, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron. Coming in with the fourth biggest opening of the year, the dark fairytale soared on dazzling visuals even if audiences only gave it a “B” CinemaScore rating. 2. Men in Black 3 Gross: $29,300,000 ($112,300,000) Screens: 4,248 (PSA $6,897) Weeks: 2 (Change: -46.3%) Foreign tallies will help Will Smith and Co. get over their 46.3 percent drop-off – even at only $112 million domestically, the sci-fi threequel has topped $386 million globally, and counting. Still, it’s not quite time to get MIB4 in gear, seeing as the reported production budget was a whopping $225 million alone. 3. The Avengers Gross: $20,273,000 ($552,737,000) Screens: 3,670 (PSA: $5,524) Weeks: 5 (Change: -44.7%) $1.35 billion worldwide and counting. That is all. 4. Battleship Gross: $4,810,000 ($55,123,000) Screens: 3,144 (PSA $1,530) Weeks: 3 (Change: -56.5%) Say bye bye to Battleship as it continues sinking ever faster down the Top 10. Universal’s thanking their lucky stars for the foreign markets right about now, as domestic take has totally a paltry $55.1 million in three weeks. 5. The Dictator Gross: $4,725,000 ($50,835,000) Screens: 2,649 (PSA $1,784) Weeks: 3 (Change: -49.1%) Still just the third-best performing Sacha Baron Cohen movie to date. N/A Piranha 3DD Gross: $179,000 (new) Screens: 86 (PSA $2,081) Weeks: 1 Well, they tried . Kinda . [Figures via Box Office Mojo ]

First Look: Elizabeth Olsen Gives a Glimpse of Erotic Thriller Therese Raquin

Elizabeth Olsen looks modestly dressed in her Victorian-era full-length dresses and hats for her role in the erotic thriller Therese Raquin , which she is currently filming in Budapest, Hungary. Olsen plays the title character Therese Raquin in this project, directed by Charlie Stratton and also starring Harry Potter ‘s Tom Felton and Jessica Lange. Her character is apparently forced into a loveless marriage with her sickly cousin Camille, played by Fenton. Young, beautiful and sexually repressed, Therese casts off innocence for a sizzling affair with her husband’s best friend Laurent, played by Drive actor Oscar Isaac. Needless to say, her dress gets ripped off on numerous occasions, according to The Daily Mail , which featured a number of photos of Olsen on set. Lange plays Therese’s controlling aunt, Madame Raquin, and the story crescendos as Therese’s dalliances with Laurent produces disastrous outcomes. “Some of the film’s themes will include the subjects of imprisonment and punishment, temperament and the human animal,” noted The Daily Mail. Olsen, 23, won praise last year for her starring role in Sundance indie Martha Marcy May Marlene and she will be seen this week in the Jane Fonda and Catherine Keener starrer Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding , which opens Friday. WATCH: An Amazing Prometheus Trailer… Made Out of Paper

Can’t get enough of this Friday’s Prometheus ? Then you’ll want to watch this shot-for-shot fan trailer that recreates every moment of Ridley Scott’s second Prometheus trailer with paper and flashlights, which is at once the antithesis of the effects-laden sci-fi pic and a neat-o celebration of its fantastical imagery. Plus: Paper Fassbender! Still hot. Obviously I have a fondness for animated fan trailers, but this one takes the form to a new level. It’s inventive, detailed, and meticulously reconstructed, and whoever drew these characters did an especially fine job on Paper Idris Elba. I’d probably watch an entire Prometheus movie made of paper. [via Film Drunk ]

Shailene Woodley’s Movie Awards Win Causes ‘A Waterfall Of Sweat’

‘I don’t even remember what happened, except for Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield’s smiling, awesome faces,’ she tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Shailene Woodley at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — It was Shailene Woodley ‘s first time at the MTV Movie Awards , and also her . “The Descendants” star took home the Best Breakthrough Performance Golden Popcorn and commanded the stage during her acceptance speech. But it turns out she was actually much more nervous than she let on. “I started sweating a whole lot. Like, a waterfall of sweat,” she reminisced when MTV News caught up with her immediately after her win. “I don’t even remember what happened, except for Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield’s smiling, awesome faces. Thank God they were up there. I would have been so nervous.” Sure, Woodley was nominated for a number of prestigious awards thanks to her fantastic performance in “The Descendants,” including a Golden Globe nom. But being invited to — and winning at — the MTV Movie Awards is still a big accomplishment in her life. “It’s the MTV Awards!” she gushed. “Let’s be real. This is crazy.” It turns out that this was an especially great experience for Woodley because she is a huge Russell Brand fan. She called his “awesome” and then dove into her passion for his particular brand of comedy. “He’s one of my favorite comedians. I think he’s just so effing funny, and I’m all about him and everything that he’s saying. He’s like a political, or like an anti-political activist, you know? And I really love his revolutionary thinking. I’m into it,” she said. “[He has] a really profound message, and without being preachy.” Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. ‘Hunger Games’ Stars Try To Cast Finnick Odair

MTV Movie Award winners Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks and Alexander Ludwig say whoever is cast has to have ‘a lot of charisma.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Josh Hutcherson arrives at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Robert Pattinson won’t be playing him. Neither will Taylor Kitsch . But there are still plenty of other actors, like Armie Hammer , who could possibly fill the role of dreamy District 4 tribute Finnick Odair in “Catching Fire.” Josh Hutcherson certainly couldn’t pick when MTV News caught up with him after the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. “I mean, honestly, I have no idea. I definitely need to re-read the second book,” he said. “I haven’t read it since I first read them, before the first one. So I think I kind of need to read it again to get a better grasp.” His fellow MTV Movie Award winner for Best Fight , Alexander Ludwig, had one person he’d love to see tackle the charming and sexy Finnick. “Whenever I read the books, I always thought Ryan Reynolds would be a great Finnick.” he said. “Ryan Reynolds is just how I pictured.” When asked what characteristics Reynolds or any actor must possess to play the part, he broke it down for us. “I think he’s just got a charisma about him. Whenever I read the books, I was like ‘If I don’t get a [role] in the first one, [then I’d be interested].’ Finnick had always been something I was interested in as a character because he reminds me a little of myself.” “He’s got a really good charisma about him,” he added. “He’s also got that bit of an egotistical edge to him which isn’t like me but I love it as character. It’s hilarious and he’s a really strong character too and he’s a really big part of the second book. He’s the most anticipated character in my mind as well. I can’t wait to see who they cast for him.” Best On-Screen Transformation winner and fellow “HG” star Elizabeth Banks was pretty stumped to have to play casting director for the part. “I don’t [know], honestly,” she said. “Everybody that’s ever been mentioned seems fantastic. I’m sure they’ll find the right fit. I think the cast has come together in such an amazing way so far and I know that their goal is to keep adding the best people and the people that its gonna be great.” So, what does she hope Finn will be like? “You know, just charisma, just a lot of charisma,” she said. “And he’s a looker.” Hutcherson added, “Physically strong, I think that’s a big important thing. I think somebody who’s kind of similar to Peeta in the sense that he knows sort of how to work the situation a little bit. I think the physicality would be really important for Finnick because he’s such an imposing character, for sure.” Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. Happy 75th Birthday, Morgan Freeman! What’s His Finest Wisdom-Spouting Role?

Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman has been in the business for over four decades, during which time he’s delighted youngsters on The Electric Company , driven Miss Daisy, led the White House vs. an asteroid, hunted serial killers, trained Hilary Swank, helped Batman, played God, fought apartheid, gunslinged his way through the Wild West, sent penguins along the circle of life with the power of his voice, and introduced the CBS Evening News. He’s earned that reputation for doling out movie wisdom with the best of ’em. With so many great performances to choose from, what’s your favorite Freeman role? I’d bet good money most folks would pick Freeman’s turn as Red in The Shawshank Redemption , but you know, I always thought that flick was a tad overrated. I’m sorry! (No I’m not. And seriously, why is it the number one favorite movie of every adult male of a certain generation?) So I’m going to go out on a limb and share one of my favorite Freeman characters: Azeem in the oft-maligned Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves . Freeman’s dedicated Moor warrior was as compelling as Kevin Costner’s accent, or lack thereof, was ridiculous. Look, it was 1991. I was 10. He was my second-favorite thing about that movie after the hit single “Everything I Do (I Do It For You).” And just look at how he does with one speech what Costner’s Robin Hood can’t manage to do with ten times the number of forest pep talks! If you would be freemen and women, so to speak, join me now! Leave your favorite Freeman roles in the comments below.

Fear Not, The CDC Officially Says Zombies Don’t Exist

With all the face-eatin’ madness going around lately, it’s been easy to wonder, after watching a few too many horror movies, if this is how the zombie apocalypse begins. Well, rest easy: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have officially stated that no zombie-making viruses exist. Yet. “CDC does not know of a virus or condition that would reanimate the dead (or one that would present zombie-like symptoms),” CDC spokesman David Daigle wrote to HuffPo. Phew! Still, remember the basics just in case they’re horribly, horribly wrong: Go for the brain, run fast, and head for the nearest mall. Right? [ Huffington Post ]

Extra Sues Over Defective Men in Black 3 Costume

The latest in a string of big budget studio movie lawsuits has been lobbed at the makers of Men in Black 3 , with extra Danika Gerner claiming that she was outfitted with a costume that led to her suffering “serious bodily injuries” during filming last May. The curious part: Reports give no clues as to just how Gerner’s costume injured her, or which background character she played. More on the litigious wardrobe malfunction after the jump. Per THR : “Gerner alleges that the costume department provided her with a costume in a ‘defective and dangerous condition’ and that the defendants were ‘negligent in failing to take suitable precautions’ for her safety.” Gerner claims her injuries still prevent her from working, which really makes me wonder – what kind of costume could put you out for over a year? My money’s on an outfit from MIB3 ‘s 1969-set Warhol party, teeming with go-go dancing refugees from the Austin Powers movies. Or maybe… [ THR ]

Harvey Weinstein, Interviewer, Asks: What’s Bill Clinton’s Favorite Movie?

Movies are by no means the most relevant topic discussed last night on Piers Morgan when Harvey Weinstein filled in as guest host and interviewed former President Bill Clinton about politics, kids drinking soda, and how much ass Hillary is kicking these days, but the parts in which the Hollywood powerhouse and the ex-Prez talked movies were some sort of bizarrely fascinating colliding of worlds. So what is Clinton’s favorite movie? Clinton shared his childhood memories of moviegoing between discussions of more compelling (okay, real) issues. His trip down memory lane included vivid recollections of the good old days. “You could go to the movies for a dime, and I’d get 20 cents — I think you could get a Coke and a candy bar for a nickel.” (Well, he is over a dozen years older than Wilford Brimley was when he was the same age as Tom Cruise shooting Cocoon , or whatever.) Now, the hypothetical Weinstein-produced Clinton biopic — there’s an idea. Meryl Streep as Hillz? If anyone could make that happen, it’d be Weinstein. Better question: Who’d play Ryan Gosling ?
