The big screen is no longer the big attraction that it once was. Every other movie these days is some sequel or some comic book-themed blockbuster, while television has proven time and again that it's often a better destination for diverse character and well-layered roles. Just ask Matthew McConaughey (True Detective), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) and Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder). So… which other actors or actresses should make this move? On at least a semi-permanent basis? Here's a look at several movie stars who should revive their careers on a television show: 1. Nicolas Cage The guy has become a running joke at this point with all the movie role he has taken on. If a script has words, we’re pretty sure he’s in. But Cage starred in Leaving Las Vegas! He’s a good actor! He could also be a respected one again in an FX drama or something. 2. Keanu Reeves WHOA. We just blew your mind, right? Keanu Reeves doesn’t have a lot of range, but he does have screen presence. His movie career has dried up, however. 3. Annette Bening It’s a sad truth in Hollywood that there are few roles for older women. But Annette Bening is an Oscar winner! Just look at the revival Jessica Lange has enjoyed on television, thanks to American Horror Story. 4. Orlando Bloom Want to be known again for your acting instead of your love life, Orlando? Head to the small screen! 5. Renee Zellweger Another former Oscar winner who has essentially disappeared. Here’s an idea: Bridget Jones as a TV show! 6. Owen Wilson He’s doing fine on the big screen, really, but don’t tell us you wouldn’t watch an Owen Wilson-fronted quirky HBO comedy. View Slideshow
Robert Johnson Continues To Defend Zoe Saldana’s Portrayal Of Nina Simone A couple weeks ago, we reported that BET founder Bob Johnson had hopped in the phone booth and donned his cape for Zoe Saldana’s inflammatory portrayal of Nina Simone. In speaking to The Hollywood Reporter , the film’s executive producer continues to try to convince black people that they should support this garbage… Two weeks after the trailer for Nina hit the Internet and caused an outcry over Zoe Saldana’s heavily altered appearance as Nina Simone, the film’s distributor is speaking to reporters in defense of the project. Critics of Nina, a biopic from U.K.-based Ealing Studios Entertainment, have protested the casting of Saldana, a light-skinned actress of Afro-Latina descent, to portray the legendary high priestess of soul, claiming that Simone’s physical appearance as a dark-skinned black woman had a major impact on her life and career. “It’s unfortunate that African-Americans are talking about this in a way that hearkens back to how we were treated when we were slaves,” says RLJ Entertainment founder and chair Robert L. Johnson, who also founded BET. “The slave masters separated light-skinned blacks from dark-skinned blacks, and some of that social DNA still exists today among many black people.” *eye-roll emoji* Now, in his one-on-one interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson cites arguments against Saldana’s skin tone as akin to in-group discriminatory practices like the brown paper bag test, wherein certain black community gatherings would only admit individuals whose skin was lighter than the bag. “That’s where some of this comes from, when you hear people saying that a light-skinned woman can’t play a dark-skinned woman when they’re both clearly of African descent,” he says. “To say that if I’m gonna cast a movie, I’ve gotta hold a brown paper bag up to the actresses and say, ‘Oh sorry, you can’t play her.’ Who’s to decide when you’re black enough?” Johnson clearly is passionate about the subject and had plenty more to say regarding the backlash. “As an African-American, I will gladly engage anyone on this question of should we be talking about how light or how dark you should be to play a role,” he says. “Many people who are talking about it don’t even realize what they’re getting into. Imagine if I were to do a biopic about Lena Horne, who’s obviously light-skinned, or Dorothy Dandridge. Would it be fair if I put up a sign that said ‘No black women apply’? That would be ridiculous. Black Americans should know better than to have this discussion over a creative project. We’re not talking about white against black. We’re talking about black against black.” This fool goes on to say… “Make the judgment on the talent of the actors, make the judgment on the writing, but don’t make it on whether or not Zoe Saldana is as black as Nina. You can always say, ‘Gee, I can find somebody who’s blacker,’” Johnson says. “Let’s talk about [the film] in terms of giving talented African-Americans a chance to play roles that they’re qualified to play.” Clearly Bobby Boy missed the ENTIRE point. If Zoe was gonna play a lighter-skinned, thinner-nosed version of Nina Simone, then cool. If you watch Vanderpump Rules online , you know this has been an especially revealing season for the newly-dubbed Mrs. Scheana Marie Shay. We’ve learned that Scheana’s marriage is in trouble ; we’ve seen her go full mean girl on Lala; and we witnessed the truly unfortunate Madonna costume that she wore to her 30th birthday party. But apparently, Scheana has shown audiences even more of herself in the past. According to a new report from Radar Online, Scheana worked on several softcore porn projects when she was just starting out in LA. Specifically, Scheana was a recurring character on Femme Fatales, a short-lived Cinemax anthology series that sounds like it was basically The Twilight Zone with boobs. “I really liked working with her a lot,” the show’s director Robert Meyer Burnett tells Radar. “We were always at odds with the actors we could get and obviously you want to get good actors, but at the same time you were like, ‘You have to get naked and simulate sex.’” Apparently, Scheana was willing to get down and dirty in more ways than one: “Not only did she have to have sex in the show, but then she had a huge cat fight in the kitchen at the end where she is battling with knives and pots and pans,” Burnett says. “She really went for it – I’ve got to give her all the credit in the world because she was awesome…I had a lot of fun with her. I thought she was great. Total trooper: she did everything that we asked of her.” Burnett says he was disappointed when Scheana (not surprisingly) later tried to leave her porn past behind her. “I had put a 2-minute directing montage of my footage from the show and I tagged everybody that was in my montage,” the director says. “She was actually the only one who objected to it. “She wrote me back, and said, ‘Look, I want you to untag me and please don’t put me on any of your stuff anymore because I’m not doing this anymore and I’m in a different phase of my career.’ “I kind of felt bummed out…I thought she was good. Times continue to change in Hollywood and around the country. Over the past couple years, more and more celebrities have come out of the closet as gay. But plenty of other celebrities have been accused of being gay. Some have denied the rumors; others have ignored them. We're not here to pass judgment on anyone, simply to rundown a list of stars whose sexuality has been questioned over recent years… 1. 50 Cent During an interview with Andy Cohen, Vivica A. Fox implied that her ex-boyfriend was not “quite clear” on his sexuality, even implying he had something going on with Soulja Boy. 50 Cent vehemently denied these accusations on Twitter. 2. Kevin Spacey The incredible actor has faced this rumor many times, saying of his sexuality in 2010: “People have different reasons for the way they live their lives. You cannot put everyone’s reasons in the same box. It’s just a line I’ve never crossed and never will… Look, at the end of the day people have to respect people’s differences. I am different than some people would like me to be.” 3. Oprah We’ve all heard it many times, right? That Oprah is a lesbian and has been dating best friend Gayle King for years. The talk show host says this simply isn’t true and she’d never hide her sexuality if she were gay. 4. Jeremy Renner “It’s not f-cking true,” Renner said of this rumor in 2012. Well then. 5. Vin Diesel Diesel hasn’t even bothered to dignify this chatter with a real response, one saying: “I’m not gonna put it out there on a magazine cover like some other actors. I come from the Harrison Ford, Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino code of silence. I’m not gonna do that.” 6. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon These two go together because they’ve only been romantically linked (same sex style) to each other. Apparently, this is an essay that Jennifer Lawrence wrote about gender inequality in pay scale in Hollywood, even though she’s currently the highest paid actress in Hollywood, and we can all agree that actors as a whole, are all over paid and in the grand scheme of the world…that is the actual inequality… What they do is not worth the money they get paid, the budgets are set and the pay scale high, so that the producers brokering and getting fiancning for their movie get their 10% of the budget off the top, so if dude is behind a 100,000,000 dollar movie, he needs to justify that 100,000,000 dollars so that he can take his 10 percent before production even starts…meaning just setting up the deal…makes him 10,000,000 dollars…before even filming…and that’s why they pay actors a ton of money…because it allows a movie that should otherwise cost a million, that they’d make 100,000 off the top…make them so much more…and I guess it makes sense because they make product and sell product and people buy into the product…so why not let the actors have a cut?…. I say, because they are all talentless hacks that are interchangeable, and that I would argue could be anyone in any given movie.. Anyway, to see a girl who gets paid too much complaining because the studios put more value on the male talent, like a male pornstar who complains because the studios put more value on the female talent…is just bullshit…even if she addresses just how it’s not relatable because she’s already made so much money…but still an issue for her because she’s not getting paid the same as the costars… The fact is, we don’t live in communism, if the producer says “I have 1,000,000 for you, take it or leave it”…take it or fucking leave it…and if they say “I have 3,000,000 for Brad Cooper because he won’t take 1,000,000 and we really want him”….who fucking cares… WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ABSURD PAY DAYS… Fuck these pieces of shit on all fronts, pay them 60,000 dollars which is SAG minimums….and still make great fucking movies, because there are equally talented people willing to take that and if it’s a good fucking movie…people will see it… I say, take the money out of the actors hands…give it to the fucking writers…directors and the people who actually make the movie what it is…not the on screen bullshit.. Either way, here’s her opinion…that I think is worth reading because it’s a joke…on all fronts..shut the fuck up and act puppet with hot tits… When Lena first brought up the idea of Lenny to me, I was excited. Excited to speak to Lena, who I think is a genius, and excited to start thinking about what to complain about (that’s not what she pitched me, it’s just what I’m gonna do). I don’t like joining conversations that feel like they’re “trending.” I’m even the asshole who didn’t do anything about the ice-bucket challenge — which was saving lives — because it started to feel more like a “trend” than a cause. It’s hard for me to speak about my experience as a working woman because I can safely say my problems aren’t exactly relatable. When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks, I didn’t get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself. I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early. I didn’t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need. (I told you it wasn’t relatable, don’t hate me). But if I’m honest with myself, I would be lying if I didn’t say there was an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight. I didn’t want to seem “difficult” or “spoiled.” At the time, that seemed like a fine idea, until I saw the payroll on the Internet and realized every man I was working with definitely didn’t worry about being “difficult” or “spoiled.” This could be a young-person thing. It could be a personality thing. I’m sure it’s both. But this is an element of my personality that I’ve been working against for years, and based on the statistics, I don’t think I’m the only woman with this issue. Are we socially conditioned to behave this way? We’ve only been able to vote for what, 90 years? I’m seriously asking — my phone is on the counter and I’m on the couch, so a calculator is obviously out of the question. Could there still be a lingering habit of trying to express our opinions in a certain way that doesn’t “offend” or “scare” men? A few weeks ago at work, I spoke my mind and gave my opinion in a clear and no-bullshit way; no aggression, just blunt. The man I was working with (actually, he was working for me) said, “Whoa! We’re all on the same team here!” As if I was yelling at him. I was so shocked because nothing that I said was personal, offensive, or, to be honest, wrong. All I hear and see all day are men speaking their opinions, and I give mine in the same exact manner, and you would have thought I had said something offensive. I’m over trying to find the “adorable” way to state my opinion and still be likable! Fuck that. I don’t think I’ve ever worked for a man in charge who spent time contemplating what angle he should use to have his voice heard. It’s just heard. Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale, and Bradley Cooper all fought and succeeded in negotiating powerful deals for themselves. If anything, I’m sure they were commended for being fierce and tactical, while I was busy worrying about coming across as a brat and not getting my fair share. Again, this might have NOTHING to do with my vagina, but I wasn’t completely wrong when another leaked Sony email revealed a producer referring to a fellow lead actress in a negotiation as a “spoiled brat.” For some reason, I just can’t picture someone saying that about a man. Jennifer Lawrence is an Academy Award–winning actress. New indications that the marriage between Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck is over seem to be surfacing every few hours. Yesterday, we learned that Garner is living in Montreal and plans to send for her kids before the start of the next school year. Today, sources claimed that Ben and Jen’s arguments over how to raise their kids may have been the final straw for their troubled marriage. Now, Radar Online is reporting that Jen told her family that she and Ben are calling it quits during a sad family dinner on Mother’s Day. Insiders say Jen took the kids to her parents’ home in West Virginia and tearfully broke the news while the kids were in a separate room. Affleck stayed in LA and spent the day with his mother and his brother Casey. “They’re through,” one insider said. “He’s told Jen that he wants the official statement to come out before their ten-year wedding anniversary.” That anniversary (June 29) is fast approaching, and it looks as though Jen and Ben have stopped trying to keep up appearances. They’ve both been spotted without their wedding rings and sources say we can expect a separation announcement from Garner and Affleck sometime in the next few weeks.
