Oscars Acceptance Speeches: The Best And The Worst

MTV News looks back on the most moving speeches and those that left us cringing. By John Mitchell Jennifer Hudson at the 2007 Oscars Photo: Vince Bucci/Getty Images Delivering a good Oscar acceptance speech is not easy. If you over prepare, you seem arrogant, like you knew you were going to win all along, and if you aren’t ready for your name to be called, you’re almost certain to forget to thank your significant other or your film’s director. Some Oscar winners suffer from a serious case of the sniffles and leave audiences unsure what they even said, while others go off on tangents that have nothing to do with movies at all. In the end, though, it mostly just comes down to having that special something, that je ne sais quoi . And let’s face it, you’ve either got it or you don’t. Below are five stars we think nailed it when they were called onstage and five who, well, didn’t exactly charm viewers’ pants off on movies’ biggest night. Best Cuba Gooding Jr., Best Supporting Actor, “Jerry Maguire” (1998) Gooding’s acceptance speech is basically an exercise in pure joy. The actor leapt to the stage and earnestly thanked just about everyone he’s ever met, starting with his mother and God, and issued “I love you’s” to “Maguire” co-star Tom Cruise, director Cameron Crowe and pretty much everyone else who worked on the film. His genuine enthusiasm captured the crowd and earned him a standing ovation. Halle Berry, Best Actress, “Monsters Ball” (2002) History was made when Berry won the Best Actress statue — she was the first African American woman to claim the lead actress prize — and she honored the moment with an emotional speech that she dedicated to “every nameless, faceless woman of color who now has a chance after tonight because this door has been opened.” She thanked the actors and actresses of color who came before her and declared the moment “so much bigger” than herself. Her speech was an exercise in humility and surprise — two things most Oscar acceptance speeches could benefit from. Jennifer Hudson, Best Supporting Actress, “Dreamgirls” (2007) Hudson’s took home the Oscar for her very first film performance and delivered a simple acceptance speech that was probably most notable for how humble and truly surprised she seemed to hear her name called. Though she’d been a favorite throughout awards season that year, she seemed shocked when George Clooney announced that she’d won and stuttered and stumbled her way through her speech, but was sure to thank all those she needed to, from “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon and her co-stars to her family, friends and Jennifer Holliday, who originated the role of Effie White on Broadway. Tom Hanks, Best Actor, “Philadelphia” (1994) Hank’s Oscar acceptance speech may well be the only one to have inspired a movie itself. His lengthy speech was marked by some traits we don’t always love — it certainly felt rehearsed — but the actor’s gratitude seemed genuine when he thanked his high school drama teacher, Rawley Farnsworth, as well as a former classmate, who he called “two of the finest gay Americans, two wonderful men.” There was only one problem: Farnsworth was still in the closet about his sexuality. The slip of the lip inspired the 1997 film “In & Out,” in which Kevin Kline plays a high school drama teacher outed when his former student (played by Matt Dillon) wins an Oscar. In a nice turn of events, the always lovely Joan Cusack earned an Oscar nomination herself playing Kline’s jilted fianc

Does Going Nude Guarantee a Best Actress Oscar?

The good people over at Entertainment Weekly have undertaken a scientific survey (as scientific as a movie blog can be, anyway) to find out, and for the raw data they have wisely turned to the expert…Mr. Skin! Using frequently nude Oscar darling Kate Winslet as the quin-tit-ssential example, EW cross-checked all the Best Actress Oscar winners from 1987 to 2011 with their records on MrSkin.com. So is going nude the key to gripping a little bald man in your sweaty palms (an Oscar , you pervs)? Yes and no. Only 9 out of the 25 winners went nude in the role they won for (like Halle Berry in Monster’s Ball (2001) and Holly Hunter in The Piano (1993)), but 21 out of the 22 actresses in the survey (some won multiple times- we’re looking at you, Meryl Streep ) had gone nude at some point in their career. Numbers don’t lie, ladies- if you want to win, you’ve got to show skin! Check out our Top 10 Nude Oscar Nominees for 2012 right here at MrSkin.com

Math-Based Oscar Predictions Not Too Different From Hype-Based Oscar Predictions

And why? Because they’re based on hype. But that’s OK, Ben Zauzmer — Harvard freshman, analytical whiz kid and proprietor of the new “matrix algebra”-based awards prognostication site Ben’s Oscar Forecast! Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics has the science down and is soliciting interns for next year’s awards-season death march. Inquire within. According to his site, Zauzmer’s predictions derive quantities for each film’s Oscar nomination (or non-nomination) showing, representation at other awards shows, and Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes data for the “major categories.” Next: With all of these numbers in the chart for each nominee in the category over the past decade, using a formula from linear algebra, Ben derived the best approximation of the relative factors of each award and critic score. These factors were applied to this year’s nominees – one formula for each category – and the percentage was calculated as a movie’s score out of the total scores. Pretty cool, except… uh: Best Picture Winner: The Artist (18%) Best Director Winner: Michel Hazanavicius – The Artist (28%) Best Actor Winner: Jean Dujardin – The Artist (28%) Best Actress Winner: Meryl Streep – The Iron Lady (24%) Viola Davis – The Help (24%) [ED: Davis and Streep are separated by 0.7%, surprise] Best Supporting Actor Winner: Christopher Plummer – Beginners (29%) Best Supporting Actress Winner: Octavia Spencer – The Help (27%) Best Writing – Original Screenplay Winner: Woody Allen – Midnight in Paris (27%) Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay Winner: Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash – The Descendants (24%) Best Animated Feature Winner: Rango (32%) Best Foreign Language Film Winner: A Separation – Iran (27%) …so on and so forth. Where have we seen these before? There’s no doubt something here, though — perhaps what’s missing is to factor in the average Academy voter’s age ? Oh, and the average weekly advertising outlay by The Weinstein Company. OH , and Uggie’s own age multiplied by the crucial tail wags-per-minute (TwPM) metric. Anyway, yeah. Needs work! But math is hard, etc. [ Ben’s Oscar Forecast ]

‘Mirror Mirror’ Star Lily Collins Leads An Enchanted Tour

Snow White herself shows off fantastical forest, crumbling village and dwarves’ cottage during MTV News’ set visit. By John Mitchell, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Lily Collins in “Mirror Mirror” Photo: Snow White Productions When “Mirror Mirror” hits theaters March 30, moviegoers will be transported to an enchanted land of snowy forests, old-timey villages and lavish castles for a classic retelling of the Snow White fairy tale. But why wait that long when you can get a sneak peek behind the scenes right now? MTV News’ own Josh Horowitz was lucky enough to visit the “Mirror Mirror” set and received a guided tour from Snow White herself, Lily Collins. “This is where I live,” Collins declared while welcoming MTV News to the snowy forest set of the film. She was quick to caution that, unlike real snow, the white stuff piled throughout the woods wasn’t exactly appetizing. “It’s salt,” she warned. “This is the forest as you can see, obviously. The dwarves’ tree house is somewhere in these woods. The majority of the action takes place here,” Collins explained. “And I’m in big ball gowns running around in this wood. I’m fighting with Armie [Hammer].” From the forest, Collins took MTV News to another soundstage, where a dilapidated village was constructed. The place was in disrepair — and, of course, it was all Julia Roberts’ fault. “It has seen better days, yes,” Collins told MTV News. “The story is that the queen [Roberts] has spent all the money, and so the village is poor.” Next, the 22-year-old “Abduction” actress introduced Josh to the dwarves’ cottage, which features several small beds and a shorter-than-usual kitchen table. “This is the classic, iconic dwarves’ house, as you can tell by the little things around. So much goes on in this house,” the actress said. “Everything from the iconic waking up scene with the dwarves and I [to] Armie — imagine Armie, how tall he is, he is in here quite a bit.” The lovely actress even invited Josh to stay in the cottage. “Don’t you want to stay? Take a little bed up there?” she asked. Alas, none of the beds built for the seven dwarves would be a good fit and Collins knows it, having given them a go herself. “I tried fitting in one of those too; they’re really small,” she admitted. 20 Years of Crap That Opened on Oscar Weekend

As the Academy and its guests gather Sunday to enthusiastically slap congratulatory-calloused backs at the Oscars, an altogether different condition will overtake multiplexes nationwide. There, audiences will be confronted by a one-joke hippie comedy with Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston ( Wanderlust ), an Amanda Seyfried thriller withheld from critics before opening day ( Gone ), the Navy SEAL recruitment effort ( Act of Valor ), and frequent Oscar week performer Tyler Perry, departing from his matriarch Madea for a change ( Good Deeds ).

Such a weak field is hardly an anomaly; the first months on the calendar historically are the wasteland of the release schedule, sitting in sharp contrast to the Academy’s annual celebration of cinematic “greatness.” A curious paradox is normally in play — at the time Hollywood crows about its best, it often serves up some of its worst. To gauge this phenomenon — and display the movie industry’s staggering self-unawareness — here is a look back at what has been foisted on the public during the last 20 years of Academy Awards weekends:

Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Supporting Actress

With her impressive awards-season run so far, ‘The Help’ star Octavia Spencer has this category wrapped up. By Kara Warner Octavia Spencer in “The Help” Photo: DreamWorks The nominees in this year’s Oscar race for Best Supporting Actress, along with their respective nominated films, might be one of the most diverse groups of women to be recognized in recent years, and yet each and every one of the five ladies nominated has a thing or two in common in the fact that they all delivered scene-stealing and perhaps career-making performances in four very different films. The only downside to the announcement of this category’s winner come Sunday night is the fact that there can be only one. Of the very talented, worthy ladies up for Best Supporting Actress — B

Lindsay Lohan: Why ‘SNL’ Could Be Her Shot In The Arm

MTV News’ resident Lohan defender explains how returning to ‘Saturday Night Live’ may be the first step in her career comeback. By John Mitchell Lindsay Lohan Photo: Evan Agostini/Getty Images I’ve long been a defender of Linsday Lohan . I root for her success and am eternally hopeful — and thus often disappointed — that she will get it together. When people slam her, mock her long, long list of troubles , I can always be called upon to email them a link to Robert Downey Jr.’s biography, which has many parallels to Lohan’s but differs because it also contains the phrase “.357-caliber Magnum handgun.” Downey’s list of troubles easily eclipses Lohan’s (at this point, anyway), but he managed to fully recover and go on to become one of the biggest stars on the planet, starring in enormous box-office hits like “Iron Man” and “Sherlock Holmes” and earning Oscar nominations for films like “Tropic Thunder.” She’s not entirely out of the woods just yet, but she’s been earning “glowing” reports on her probation progress and was recently announced as the host of “Saturday Night Live” on March 3. A series of good signs and the first truly positive news out of Camp Lohan in a long time. When word of Lohan’s hosting stint on “SNL” was announced, I was incredibly pleased. For many reasons, it seems like a smart move, and if she pulls it off, it could be the first step (of many necessary steps) toward a real career comeback. Here’s why:

‘Twilight’ Star Ashley Greene: Three Birthday Wishes

In the final year of the franchise that made her famous, ‘Twilight’ Tuesday shares three wishes for the birthday girl. By Kara Warner Ashley Greene Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage In honor of “Twilight” star Ashley Greene’s 25th birthday, this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is three birthday wishes for the actress: 2012 Box-Office Success “Twilight” fans will make sure the fifth and final film in the franchise, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” will be a success, so we’re not worried about that one. Looking ahead to Greene’s upcoming slate of non-“Twilight” films, we’re excited to see her “saucy” side in teen comedy “LOL,” in which she stars alongside Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore. We’re also intrigued to see how much she’ll scare us (or be scared) in “Apparition,” which opens in August. More Leading Roles Although plenty of attention is paid to “Twilight” superstars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, Greene has always stood out for us in the way she plays Alice Cullen with such sweetness and sincerity — not to mention her mental and physical toughness. We’d like to see Greene carry a film on her own, specifically a romantic comedy or romantic drama. We’re thinking something along the lines of Rose Byrne’s character in “Bridesmaids” or a Rachel McAdams-esque romantic drama. Stay a Role Model In a world that seems to celebrate the comings and goings of starlets based on their outrageous antics onscreen and off, Greene has handled her rise in fame with poise and class. We appreciate the fact that she has made exquisite and enviable choices when it comes to her red-carpet fashions, which won her a Style Icon Award at the Hollywood Life Young Hollywood Awards. And with respect to making headlines, Greene managed to keep her relationship with former flame Joe Jonas mostly under wraps and free from any tabloid scandal. She did have one nude-photo scandal early on, but the woman recovered gracefully and appears to have a solid head on her shoulders — and we hope she stays that way. “I went from dying to get a gig, to dying to get the gig everyone wants,” Greene has said of her rise to fame via her role in “Twilight.” “So now I’m in this realm with a lot of highly respected actresses, which is an amazing place to be, but also kind of terrifying. … I’m so laser-focused on my career, because when you’re dealt these cards, if you don’t kind of run with it, then you’re an idiot. You gotta take advantage of what you’ve been given.” What birthday wishes do you have for Ashley Greene? Let us know in the comments or tweet me @karawarner!
