She may look like an easy target, but Margaretta Wolf, 96, turned the tables on a would-be robber at her neighborhood grocery store in Wisconsin. Looks can be deceiving, as they say. Having owned and operated her store for 54 years, she wasn’t about to cave to some armed intruder after he ordered her to open the cash register. “I said: ‘I’m not opening that register. That’s it, I’m not opening it. I said have all the Tootsie Rolls you want but I am not opening that cash register,'” she said. The man in the silver mask and carrying a knife continued to give Wolf orders during the robbery attempt Monday, but she was having none of it . “He said, ‘Walk in the back of the store.’ I said, ‘I’m not walking no place, I’m standing right here,’ ” Wolf recounted, then stood her ground even as he pulled a knife. “I said, ‘I’ll press a button and I’ll have somebody here in seconds,'” she said. Wolf said the would-be robber appeared frustrated and confused, looked around, saw a security camera in the corner, then took his knife and fled. Marshfield, Wisc., Police Lt. Darren Larsen said he’s just glad Wolf is okay. “In this instance, certainly again while not recommended with what took place, we’re just very, very happy Marge was not injured,” Larsen told WAOW-TV. Wolf said she has a few words for the suspect if the cops nab him. “What do I say to him? I say I think you got some punishments coming, and it will be a little bit more than scrubbing the floor,” she told her local news. Moral of the story … don’t mess with this granny!
Lea Michele tried. She really did. Aware that Cory Monteith had a history of substance abuse, Michele did all she could to protect her fellow Glee star during the year-plus they dated. According to a TMZ insider, Cory – described as sweet but naive – was surrounded by a ” a zoo of piranhas ” in Hollywood, with danger around every corner. But Michele stood by her man and took the lead in convincing him to attend rehab this spring after his addiction cropped back up. Unfortunately, she could not control Monteith’s behavior in his native Canada, which, as previously reported, contrasted greatly from his actions in Hollywood . He died last Saturday in a Vancouver hotel room after a night out with friends. This same source says Michele was instrumental in arranging Monteith’s cremation and memorial. She took the reins and made it a lot easier on Cory’s mother in the wake of her son’s tragedy. R.I.P.

Michael Lohan wants to secure a conservatorship for his daughter, Lindsay Lohan. Popularized by Britney Spears , this arrangement would strip the troubled star of control regarding her own financial, legal and medical decisions indefinitely. MiLo told a lawyer that his daughter is a hardass druggie who hangs with the wrong crowd – including her own mother Dina Lohan – and must be saved . Now. Before you jump to the obvious conclusion, two interesting points: Michael does NOT want to be Lindsay’s conservator personally, to prove this is not a money grab on his part. He wants a judge to appoint a third party. Lindsay’s management team was in fact on board with the intervention Michael staged Friday. Mike says a conservatorship is the only way LiLo will get clean, and blames her downward spiral on the various hangers-on in her life who help fuel her addiction. His motives will always be suspect, but the fact that Michael did not act alone in trying to force Lindsay into rehab is telling. Everyone around her is apparently alarmed. Unlike Britney, who was saved by her father Jamie Spears taking over, LiLo doesn’t appear to have hit rock bottom, thought she could be worse than we know. Smashed has been built up as Mary Elizabeth Winstead ‘s career-maker — a character-driven piece about an alcoholic woman entering AA — although time will tell if the addiction dramedy has the mojo to muscle in on the awards race with folks like Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Lawrence hogging all the buzz with their respective festival hits. But take a look at the first Smashed trailer and four additional clips, co-starring Aaron Paul, Octavia Spencer , Megan Mullally, and Nick Offerman (courtesy of Sony Classics ) and get to early prognosticating on Winstead’s chances. Paul threatens to be a force as well, with that constant crackling energy of his. Hell, everyone in this ensemble is pretty fantastic in their own right (see following clips for scenes with Paul, Mullally, and the erstwhile Ron Swanson) though for my money the scene below of Winstead’s Kate going from flip to crushingly emotional in the span of a single shot as she introduces herself at an AA meeting is the most powerful and telling sign yet that this is a big moment for Winstead. Friends Say Mary Kennedy Driven To Drugs/Suicide By Philandering Husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The Kennedy “curse” strikes again, but in this case we’re inclined to think the curse has more to do with the Kennedy men’s cheating ways . Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s estranged wife, Mary, who battled her husband’s rumored philandering by turning to alcohol and prescription drugs, hanged herself in a barn on their Westchester estate yesterday, sources told The Post. The 52-year-old mother of four — the latest victim of a family dynasty cursed with tragedies — may have taken her own life because she was haunted by her broken marriage, her friends lamented. “She was deeply troubled, abusing alcohol and prescription meds,” a close family friend said. “She had cause. She was used up and tossed away by Bobby. That was awful.” Bedford police responded at 1:36 p.m. to a report of a “possible unattended death” — meaning there were no witnesses — at the estate. After authorities arrived, they cut her down and tried to revive her. She was found by a housekeeper, ABC News reported. Mary was found “inside an out-building on that property,” police said in a statement. She left behind a note, and none of her children were home at the time, sources said. The Kennedy family dealt stoically with the latest in the long line of shocking deaths. “We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her,” the family said in a statement. “Our heart goes out to her children, who she loved without reservation. We have no further comment at this time.” A grim-faced RFK Jr. showed up at the house at around 8 p.m. The third of 11 children of former US Sen., Attorney General and presidential candidate Robert Francis Kennedy, he married Mary Richardson in 1994, one month after his first marriage ended following 12 years. The ceremony took place aboard a research vessel on the Hudson River, a fitting spot for the couple, who were environmental advocates. A family friend said Mary had known the Kennedy clan long before she married Bobby, and had been a close pal of his sister — also named Mary, but known as Kerry — since they were 15-year-olds. “She had grown up with the Kennedy family, having been Kerry’s best friend since they were teenagers,” the friend said. The marriage broke down amid reports of her addiction and rumors of his involvement with other women. “She knew Bobby her whole life, and now he rejected her. Tragic,” the family friend said. Kennedy, 58, filed for divorce on May 12, 2010, two days after Mary called police to complain about her husband — but she appeared “visibly intoxicated” when officers arrived, according to police reports. A day after the divorce filing, Bedford police were again called to the home because of a report of a “domestic incident” in which Mary was reportedly drunk. Two days later, she was charged with driving under the influence when she was caught speeding down the Taconic State Parkway. Her license was suspended. Ethel Kennedy, her mother-in-law, sent a handwritten letter, seeking leniency and calling Mary a “kind, loving and generous person.” Cops confirmed then that they had been called to the estate several times in the previous years. Mary’s close friend pointed to the strain of her 18-year marriage. “She was lovely. She always looked out for you,” she said, but added, “She did not have it easy, being Bobby’s wife. “I remember being seated at a dinner next to Bobby around 10 years ago that she was also at — it was the first time I had met either of them — and he put his hand on my thigh under the table. We hadn’t even spoken but to say hello. He is such a dog that way.” The friend, who requested anonymity, alluded to the problems of other women who have married into the fabled clan: “Like all Kennedy wives, she was expected to tow the line. Stay quiet, take care of the kids, tolerate the affairs and look happy. She took solace in yoga and meditation.” Still, the philandering took “a terrible toll,” the source said, adding, “He got all the glory, and she got no acknowledgment for what she did: holding it all together at home.” Kennedy rarely spoke about his private life, but opened up to Oprah Winfrey in a 2007 interview. “Pretty soon after my dad died” — referring to his father’s assassination in 1968 — “I started taking drugs,” he said. After overcoming his addiction he became an environmental advocate. Mary, who had worked as an architect before her marriage, took up the same environmental causes and tried to turn the Bedford estate into a showcase, according to her friend. “She was a gentle soul. She was very proud of how she had turned their family home into the truly greenest/eco-friendly home ever,” she said. The friend said Mary took over caring for the two children from her husband’s first marriage — and then raised four of her own. “Like so many parents of Kennedy kids, she was dealing with a wild bunch,” she said. “The kids were always getting into scrapes, and Mary was forever rescuing them.” It sounds like this woman had an incredibly hard life. 18 years of marriage to someone who doesn’t treat you right can’t be easy and it sounds like she had her hands full with the kids.
