They did MJ so wrong right before he died… TMZ has the scoop. Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris made a bombshell announcement to friends … telling them the MJ album released in the wake of the singer’s death did NOT contain MJ’s actual voice … it was an imposter. TMZ has learned … the announcement was made during an online video chat with several friends in 2010 … just before the “Michael” album was released, which contains several previously unreleased tracks allegedly performed by Michael Jackson. The video chat was recorded … and Paris joked about the footage eventually “leaking” to the Internet. Paris had made the announcement in the midst of rumors that MJ’s parts on the “Michael” album were REALLY performed by an MJ sound-alike named Jason Malachi … but both Jason and Sony denied the allegations. During the video chat, Paris played one of the songs from the album, “Hold My Hand” … and one of her friends asks why the singer doesn’t sound like MJ. Paris replied, “It’s NOT him … the whole album isn’t even him!! Go online … go on YouTube and look up Jason Malachi. That’s him!!” She continues, “I should know if it’s him or not because he would sing to me all the time.” So they were even faking MJ’s voice before he died? That’s wild. But we’ll have to see the actual video of Paris saying it because someone may have faked HER voice. SMH. Who can you trust these days? More On Bossip! Eddie loves him a bangin’ bawwwdy so this shouldn’t come as a surprise but for some reason we never figured Toni Braxton as his type, but guess he decided he could take a detour from his usual tall and manly shtick to chop down the singer. According to US Weekly reports : The singer, 44, and comic actor, 50, “are seeing each other and very into it,” a source tells Us Weekly, adding that the romance started up four months ago. The Tower Heist star — who has eight kids from previous relationships — even cheered on the mother of two (who’s been separated from singer Keri Lewis since 2009), backstage at her Feb. 19 L.A. concert. While Braxton’s rep insists “Toni and Eddie are just friends and have been fans of each other’s work for a long time,” the insider says, “Their kids have met and everything. It’s getting very serious.” In addition to first wife Nicole Mitchell, Murphy dated former Spice Girl Melanie Brown from 2006 to 2007, and exchanged marital vows with Tracey Edmonds in 2008 in a “symbolic” ceremony that was never made legal. Back in the late 1980s, Murphy was linked to another big-voiced R&B superstar: the late Whitney Houston. Braxton’s search for love after her split from Lewis was a major plot point in the most recent season of her reality show Braxton Family Values. Congratulations and best of luck to them. ‘I definitely did not know that he was going to do that,’ Seacrest said on his radio show on Monday. By Gil Kaufman Ryan Seacrest and Sacha Baron Cohen at the Oscars on Sunday Photo: E! Entertainment Who better to try to flap than the unflappable Ryan Seacrest? If he could put up with Simon Cowell’s constant attacks for nearly a decade, surely the ‘Crest could handle a sneak attack from the Dictator. And, true to his laser-focus reputation, when Sacha Baron Cohen ‘s Dictator ash-bombed Seacrest on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night, the “American Idol” host kept his composure. After all, he had to know that SBC was not just going to show up in costume, but was very likely going to create one of his infamous scenes to drive up some hype for his upcoming tyrant spoof . “I was surprised, but not surprised. I definitely did not know that he was going to do that,” Seacrest said on Monday morning (February 27) on his radio show, “On Air With Ryan Seacrest,” about his surprise when Cohen “accidentally” spilled an urn filled with the purported ashes of late North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il on the TV presenter’s tux. “He comes over and I asked him a couple of questions but … you know that feeling in your gut.” Knowing that Cohen was not going to let him off that easy, Seacrest said in the back of his mind he kept thinking, “This guy isn’t coming as the Dictator to not do something … you know in your gut, you feel like, ‘This is going too normally.’ ” And then when he saw the urn come out, Seacrest could see something coming. “It was getting closer to my chest and then it tipped over. And it wasn’t the wind. He spilt it on my tuxedo.” Did we mention Seacrest is hard to rattle? The consummate professional didn’t flinch because he smartly followed the advice his mother, Connie, gave him long ago when he was just a wee wannabe presenter: ” ‘You always want to have two jackets. You never know what’s going to happen. You never know what you’re going to spill on yourself and you want to be red carpet-ready at all times. That’s your job.’ So I had another jacket.” Seacrest had a great attitude about the gag, which drew a thumbs-up from some of the other celebs MTV News talked to at Elton John’s annual Oscar-viewing party and charity gala. With the once-troubled exes poised to return to Sunday’s show, we look back on the assault that changed everything. By Rebecca Thomas Rihanna performs at the 2011 Grammys Photo: Getty Images They were R&B’s answer to Britney and Justin. Young, gifted and famous, Rihanna and Chris Brown had become a favorite of the blogs and mags in 2008; pictures of them coupled up on the beach or just making a fast food run cropped up everywhere. Rihanna once remarked that Brown helped her to feel her age in a very grown-up industry. But everything changed on the night of February 7, 2009. Brown’s assault on girlfriend Rihanna would change the career trajectories of both, catapulting one to superstardom and launching the other on an unlikely comeback trail. Three years later, with the two stars are poised to return to the Grammy stage, MTV News looks back. February 7, 2009 : Rihanna hits the stage at a pre-Grammy party hosted by producer Timbaland in Los Angeles. The Bajan stunner performs her smash “Umbrella,” among other tunes. Earlier that night, she’s snapped looking cheerful with boyfriend Chris Brown at music honcho Clive Davis’ annual Grammy bash. February 8, 2009 : Reports surface that Brown and a female passenger was involved in a car accident. E! News confirms that neither Rihanna nor Brown will appear at the Grammy Awards ceremony that night; both were scheduled to perform. The Los Angeles Police Department begin investigating a felony battery report against the Virginia crooner. February 19, 2009 : TMZ posts a gruesome photo of Rihanna taken by LAPD just after the February assault. The image of the singer — bruised, eyes swollen and mouth split — confirms what had been rumor up until then. Then-19-year-old Brown becomes the subject of public outrage. The backlash is only beginning, though, as radio stations across the country announce bans on Brown’s music. June 22, 2009 : Brown has been mostly quiet, on the advice, he says, of his representatives. In May, Vibe publishes a cover story, “Tainted Love,” delving into how the young couple unraveled. It’s a more nuanced portrait that describes both Brown’s and Rihanna’s upbringings in households rife with domestic violence. It’s also announced that Brown will strike a plea deal giving him 180 days of community service. The same month, the “Forever” singer uploads a video apology to the Web: “I’ve told Rihanna countless times and I’m telling you today, I’m truly, truly sorry that I wasn’t able to handle the situation both differently and better,” he pleads. September 2, 2009 : Brown tapes an interview with CNN’s “Larry King Live.” Accompanied by his attorney, the singer — seldom off-pitch onstage — struggles to strike the right chord. But even his unfortunate choice of neckwear comes under scrutiny. November 6, 2009 : Rihanna sits down for a “20/20” special, detailing for anchor Diane Sawyer her assault at the hands of Brown. November 9, 2009 : Rihanna tells MTV’s Sway she doesn’t want to be the “domestic-violence spokesperson.” November 20, 2009 : Rihanna drops the dark and introspective Rated R, sporting a razor-cut, tough-girl ‘do on the album cover that sparks a frenzy of its own in Stateside hair salons. The LP is widely received as a rumination on her tragic relationship with Brown. May 17, 2010 : Unofficially on ice with his label, Jive, Brown joins with homey and YMCMB rapper Tyga for the Fan of a Fan mixtape. The project yields slow-burning smash singles like “Deuces” and “No Bullsh–.” February 10, 2011 : Two years after the incident, the “Russian Roulette” singer agrees to loosen a restraining order against Brown. Breezy also earns high marks for progress from the judge in his ongoing probation case. November 12, 2011 : Red-tressed Rihanna drops Loud, and the Grammy-nominated album is a sunny departure from the brooding R. That month she and Brown also take to their respective Twitter accounts and signal in a series of posts that they’re ready to move on from the assault narrative. March 22, 2011 : Livid over questions about his relationship with ex Rihanna, Brown smashes a chair in an ABC green room after a “Good Morning America” interview. The outburst threatens to overshadow what will be a highly successful release, the F.A.M.E album. 2011 : It’s a year of triumphs for the former duo: From awards to VMA performances, Grammy nods and critical acclaim, the Rihanna Navy and Team Breezy rally behind their idols. January 19, 2012 : After the blogosphere lights up with rumors that Rih and Brown are hooking up again, a rep for Brown denies the two have reunited, insisting the superstar exes are “just friends.” Brown’s representative also confirms he won’t be doing any press this year. February 8, 2012 : Recording Academy announces that Brown will perform at Sunday’s show; Rihanna has been confirmed for a collabo with rockers Coldplay. The revelation sets up the potential for a public reunion. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! ‘A lot of times there’s a lot of artists that didn’t end up winning that became huge,’ Joe tells MTV News of this year’s Best New Artist class. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Photo: Columbia Three years ago, Adele was an up-and-coming singer who was just beginning bubble on the American pop scene thanks to her 19 single “Chasing Pavements.” In 2009, a year after the release of her debut, the still-somewhat-unknown Brit won the Best New Artist Grammy . She was well on her way to becoming one of the biggest voices in pop. This year, she’ll head into Sunday’s Grammys with six nominations for her heartbreaking 21. But back in ’09, Adele — who had yet to build up a big Stateside fanbase — managed beat the likes of the Jonas Brothers and fellow Brit Duffy in the category. Three years later, the JoBros can laugh off the loss. “We lost,” Kevin joked to MTV News when we caught up with the guys this week. Asked if he had any 2012 Grammy advice for the “Rolling in the Deep” singer, he could only say, “To Adele … she’s only like one of the best artists ever. It’s cool.” Joe also had some words of wisdom for this year’s crop of Best New Artist nominees, including the Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj and Skrillex. “I think, go in knowing that you’re a winner already. You got that far, you should feel like a champion,” Joe said. “I believe Norah Jones said it, ‘Sometimes it can be a curse. You get scared if you’re gonna win. I’m not saying there’s a curse on Adele — she’s amazing! — but a lot of times there’s a lot of artists that didn’t end up winning that became huge, so you’re a winner [regardless].” And as the JoBros dished, if you do lose, there’s always a consolation prize. “You do get a really cool like gold necklace, metal thing,” Kevin revealed. Acoustic singer Matt Nathanson is hitting the road with Kelly on her Stronger Tour. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Matt Nathanson Photo: MTV News As Kelly Clarkson kicks off 2012 with her highly anticipated Stronger tour , MTV News caught up with her opening act, singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson . Clarkson fans may recognize Nathanson from his single “Come On Get Higher,” which received heavy radio play in 2008 and then again with 2011’s “Faster.” For someone who hasn’t heard his music yet, it can best be described as acoustic rock with a squeeze of country and a pop garnish. He cited a wide range of musical influences including U2, Poison, White Snake, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Van Halen. Nathanson will also be playing several headlining shows while he tours with Clarkson. He opened up about different being an opening act is compared to having your own show. “Opening shows are more like you’ve got to go out and win them over,” he said. “It’s like clubbing people over the head and dragging them back to your cave. It’s like a prize fight. You go out and just grab them and drag them back and make them yours.” “When I have a headline show, I think of it as a party and I’m sort of like the host,” he explained. The tour is already underway in the U.S., and Nathanson says he’s having a great time. “There’s always a moment where you walk out to someone else’s audience and you don’t know what you’re going to get,” he described. “Kelly’s audience is different than my audience, and it takes them a while to get used to me and me a little while to get used to them. And then once you make that connection, you’re in. It’s fun!” Nathanson is currently touring to promote his latest album, Modern Love, and will stick with Kelly for the remainder of her North American leg of the tour. Following Newt Gingrich’s win in the South Carolina primary, young voters have advice for the president’s bid for re-election. By Uptin Saiidi President Barack Obama Photo: Shahar Azran/WireImage If there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that primary voters aren’t yet ready to decide on a Republican candidate for the 2012 presidential election. Despite Mitt Romney’s considerable lead at the beginning of last week, Newt Gingrich pulled off an upset over the weekend in the South Carolina primary, with Gingrich taking 40 percent of the vote to Romney’s 27 percent. While Republicans wrestle with choosing a nominee as they head into next week’s Florida primary, President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign is gaining momentum. On Thursday, in addition to raising $1.6 million for his campaign, Obama captured widespread attention when he busted out his singing chops with Rev. Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” at a fundraiser event at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. When MTV News spoke to people in Times Square about the president’s musical interlude, the consensus was that his vocals scored a passing grade. “It sounded really good, it’s one of my favorite songs,” Felicia Bullinger, 20, told us. Even an “American Idol” producer weighed in , telling MTV News that the commander in chief could pass an “Idol” audition and make it through to Hollywood Week. Obama’s voice wasn’t the only thing that won people over. His softer side resonated with 18-year-old student Tonya Deodath. “I think he’s always serious so I think it’s kind of good that he’s being a little personal with everybody. It doesn’t hurt to be silly sometimes.” Jamie Dahlquist, 24, agreed. “I think it’s fun to show the real human side of himself. It’s a good way to get the young people on his side.” A human side could ultimately help translate into more votes. “Seeing how it’s time for re-election, if he’s going to get more votes, you have to get personal with the people you’re trying to win over,” Deodath said. With 45 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 eligible to vote in this year’s election, the power of young voters is hard to ignore, especially after the support he received from 2008’s record youth turnout . Of course, gaining popularity will take more than singing at $200-per-ticket fundraisers as voters have mixed reactions to the president’s time in office and weighed in with their advice for his campaign. “He shouldn’t make so many promises because as much as someone wants to change the world, they’re not going to be able to promise everything,” Victoria Lavista, 18, said. “I think he did that last time and there’s a lot of promises he didn’t follow up on.” One issue that seems to top the list of issues for young Americans is student loan debt and jobs. “To President Obama, I speak for students when I say this, help us out, especially parents and [those] students who want to go back to school or who are in school right now,” Deodath said. “It’s kind of hard for students to get a job and nobody’s really doing anything about that. “And if kids are the future, we have to go to school in order to be the future.”
