Jay-Z Crafts The Ultimate Blueprint: A VMA Cheat Sheet

The 40-year-old MC is rewriting the hip-hop handbook, powering through perhaps his most dominant year yet. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z performs at Comerica Park on Thursday in Detroit, Michigan Photo: Getty Images Although it’s been almost exactly one year since Jay-Z Alicia Keys took their hometown anthem to the World Series , performing the number before game 2 of the baseball championships between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies. The Roc Nation CEO then rode shotgun with Alex Rodriguez during the Yankees victory parade in Manhattan. As the celebration wrapped, Jay performed his tune, which Derek Jeter had used as his at-bat music throughout the playoffs. Jay-Z scored a big win on his own just a month after the Yanks clinched the chip when he earned his first career #1 record as “Empire State of Mind” topped the Billboard Hot 100. The iconic MC has amassed a total of 11 number one albums, but this was his first solo #1 single . As is nearly always the case with Jay-Z, business was good, too. He became a Broadway producer, along with Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith, when he invested in the Tony-winning Broadway play “Fela!” The investment was among one of the many money moves that helped Jay-Z to top the Forbes “Hip-Hop Cash Kings” list this year, the third time in four years he’s done so. 2010 also started off on the right foot as Jay-Z took home the award for Best International Male Solo Artist at the Brit Awards . Domestically, Jay boasted about hearing his music playing in the background when he called President Barack Obama . He later visited the White House with his wife, Beyonc

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Other VMA Stars Get Expert Fashion Advice

Experts dish their advice for making the best-dressed list … and avoiding the worst-dressed list. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Paul Warner/WireImage The VMA show is a stomping ground for eclectic fashion — both good and bad. And that means that when the show kicks off on Sunday with everyone from Lady Gaga to Ke$ha to Katy Perry hitting the red carpet, people will be talking by the watercooler for days to come about what those fashionistas wore to the big show. In the past, Lady Gaga has stunned at the VMAs in her Victorian-style dress, Perry has embraced her pinup-girl roots, and Taylor Swift has sparkled and dazzled in sequins. While it’s unknown who will show up wearing what to Sunday’s big show, some fashion experts have some key advice for staying off the worst-dressed list. Faran Krentcil, Nylon magazine’s digital director, credits Gwen Stefani as a VMA fashion “do” and says that the only way to make the best-dressed list come Sunday is to make the effort to be on it. “I think you have to first decide that you want to be on the best list because some people just want attention. So if you want attention, then do whatever you want,” she advised. “What you need to do is get a good stylist to help you pick stuff out. You need to worry a lot more about what looks good on your body than what’s trendy and probably take whatever you’re the most proud of in your music and translate that into fashion.” Celebrity stylist Derek Roche advises that if you want to do VMA fashion right, resist the desire to overdo it. “I think the easiest way is not to think. It’s about simplicity,” he explained. “People think they have to go and be all dolled up and they have to compete with Rihanna and Beyonc

Matthews Reveals His Obama ‘Thrill’ Has Moved Up From Leg to ‘All Over Me’

Chris Matthews is still getting a thrill up his leg, and even further, whenever he hears Barack Obama speak, as the MSNBCer, on Monday’s Hardball, announced to the world “I get the same thrill up my leg, all over me,” whenever he listens to Obama’s 2004 Democratic convention speech. Matthews also revealed he is really sensitive about how his “thrill” moments are described, as he took offense when a guest inaccurately labeled it a “tingle” as Matthews shot back: “It wasn’t a tingle, up my leg, that’s what right wing fascists say. I got a thrill up my leg. Okay? You’re reading the right wing blogs. Start tuning your station.” [ audio available here ] Matthews, however, is quite aware that the rest of the country doesn’t share the same all over body thrill he does as he asked his guests, Roger Simon of the Politico and Jim Kessler of Third Way, “Can President Obama stir us again and help his party keep power this November?”  The following is the full segment as it was aired on the September 7 Hardball: [5:17pm] BARACK OBAMA: I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story. That I owe a debt to all of those who came before me and that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible. CHRIS MATTHEWS: Wow, that was America’s introduction to Barack Obama in 2004 in his acknowledgment that only in America was his story possible inspired us. And as he battled through the 2008 primaries he retold that story, and it was electric. OBAMA: My own story tells me that in the United States of America there’s never been anything false about hope, at least not if you’re willing to work for it. Not if you’re willing to struggle for it, not if you’re willing to fight for it. I should not be here today. I should not be here today. I was not born into money or status. I was born to a teenage mom in Hawaii. My father left us when I was two. But my family gave me love. They give me an education. And most of all they gave me hope. Hope, hope that in America, no dream is beyond our grasp. If we reach for it and fight for it and work for it. MATTHEWS: I get the same thrill up my leg all over me, every time I hear those words. I’m sorry, ladies and gentlemen that’s me. He’s talking about my country and nobody does it better. Can President Obama stir us again and help his party keep power this November? Jim Kessler is co-founder and vice president of Third Way, a progressive think tank. Roger Simon, our buddy is chief political columnist for Politico. Gentlemen, with a little bit of sentiment, Roger, try here. ROGER SIMON, POLITICO: I’m sentimental. MATTHEWS: Try to stick with me. It seems to me, that what’s thrilled me, and I admitted it so many times, is when he talked about America. He wasn’t saying “I’m going to do this because I’m a big shot and I’m a brain.” He said, you know, “I was lucky and also I was fortunate to live in this country and, and we can do things on our own without a lot of help from government and big stuff. On our own we can do things. That’s what your piece is about, isn’t it? He doesn’t talk like that any more. JIM KESSLER, THIRD WAY: Right. I think it’s hard to talk like that when you’re in the middle of a lot of legislative battles, but if you look back 10.8 percent unemployment, 6.3 percent inflation, decline in GDP, doubling of the deficit over the previous years and presidential approval ratings south of 40 percent, Ronald Reagan, November of 1982, at the exact moment of the midterm elections he held all 54 Republican Senate seats, they lost a couple dozen House seats, which is basically par for the course. It shows you can have an economic environment as bad or worse as what the Democrats and Barack Obama are facing- MATTHEWS: If? KESSLER: If, you have to own one thing. You have to own optimism. And that’s what, that’s what President Reagan was selling to the American people. A destination, a vision about success and where America was going. MATTHEWS: Was that a confidence in themselves or in his program? KESSLER: I think it was confidence in himself, as a leader, because there was doubts about Reaganomics. Reaganomics hadn’t worked for one moment, at that point, but they understood the destination where he wanted to take this country. And they said, “You know what we’re gonna hitch a ride with this guy. I’m not sure about the program but I know where he wants to take this country” and, you know, he, he, ya hitched a wagon to him. And people stuck, stuck with him. MATTHEWS: Somebody is giving him other advice here. He’s getting somewhere else because this, they’re talking, “They’re treating me like a dog.” This whining almo-, not whining. That’s a knock. But, you know, he’s talking like he’s being put down. He’s not being put down. He’s being criticized. SIMON: No, he’s the President of the United States. He can’t portray himself as a victim. One other thing that the Republicans had going for them in ’94 is that the Democrats were fat and sassy and lazy and didn’t see it coming. Also they had a movement leader in Newt Gingrich, and his Contract With America which was more symbolic than real. But people said, “Oh here it is in writing. This is a good deal.” MATTHEWS: Yeah, but only about one-fifth of people knew about that so-called contract. Let me ask you about Jim’s point, about the basic speech he used to give about America. No one questioned Barack Obama’s Americanism when he was running as a candidate. They didn’t talk about his religion. They knew he had an exotic name, Barack Obama. But that was so much like a lot of our names, they’re accidents of our parents or grandparents. It wasn’t who we are. Now the Republicans have tagged him with that, it’s his identity. He is Barack Hussein Obama. That’s who he is, it’s an identity because he doesn’t seem to wow us with his love of country like he used to, that’s my thought. SIMON: Well I think he’s suffering under the belief that he’s got to something for an encore. You can’t go back to the past. And you saw on the podium the past placard. “Change you can believe in.” MATTHEWS: Yeah. SIMON: “Change we can believe in. Well now people have the right to say, “Where is the change? Where is it? It didn’t happen.” MATTHEWS: Well it’s a year-and-a-half. SIMON: People are impatient. MATTHEWS: Yeah. SIMON: They want to see something. MATTHEWS: But why did they put up with Reagan for a year-and-a-half of nothing but 11 unemployment, 11 percent unemployment? SIMON: Reagan, as Barack Obama is, though in different ways, a very magnetic personable figure that people liked and trusted. Barack Obama, as I said, is the same. By Election Day he cannot improve the unemployment figures. But, by Election Day, he can goose up the Democrats. He can make them confident. MATTHEWS: Yeah okay. Here’s the question. Let’s watch Reagan for a second and then I’m gonna ask you Jim, can a Democrat be turned on the way a Republican can? I know I can. Somewhere in the middle, slightly left but I’m there and I can get it turned on by America as anybody on the right. But maybe, I’m gonna ask you whether Democrats really want to be positive. Here he is, Reagan being positive, maybe talking to the choir. Here he is in January of 1982. Let’s look. RONALD REAGAN: Don’t let anybody tell you America’s best days are behind her, that the american spirit has been vanquished. We’ve seen the triumph, too often in our lives, to stop believing in it now. MATTHEWS: Can a Democrat talk like that? KESSLER: Yes. I mean, look, you talked about that tingle up your leg. I mean you know… MATTHEWS: It wasn’t a tingle, up my leg, that’s what right wing fascists say. I got a thrill up my leg. Okay? You’re reading the right wing blogs. Start tuning your station. KESSLER: My, my apologies. MATTHEWS: No it’s not enough, because you’re reading the wrong stuff. But go ahead, I was just kidding. I can take it. I’m sorry.

Open Thread: Democrats Moving Away from Nancy Pelosi

Today’s starter topic : Does this represent a policy shift or just a campaign tactic? Some of the Democratic Party’s most endangered lawmakers are taking steps to distance themselves from Speaker Nancy Pelosi in an attempt to inoculate themselves from charges that they are beholden to the unpopular House leader and supportive of the ambitious national Democratic agenda. Three vulnerable Democrats from conservative-oriented districts are already running TV ads spotlighting their defiance of Pelosi. One freshman incumbent recently joked about the possibility of Pelosi not being able to take up the gavel next year because she might pass away. Another member from a tough district suggested he might run for speaker himself. The roster of Democrats currently playing six degrees of separation from Pelosi spans the map, from the Northeast to the South and across the Midwest to South Dakota. Pelosi aides and allies said they understand that embattled members sometimes need to distance themselves from the speaker and note that she doesn’t take it personally, although they caution that how it is done is just as important as why it’s done.

Lindsay Lohan Doctors Recommend 30 Days In Rehab

August 25 court hearing could determine how much of Lohan’s 90-day rehab sentence she’ll actually serve. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: David McNew/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, was in court on Wednesday (August 18) to meet with prosecutors and the new judge overseeing the actress’ probation violation case. During the meeting, which was held in the chambers of Judge Elden S. Fox, the idea of whether the troubled “Mean Girls” star should be released from drug rehab early was reportedly discussed. After serving 13 days of a 90-day jail sentence, Lohan was slated to spend 90 days in a drug rehabilitation facility. But according to RadarOnline , a court date to discuss the length of Lohan’s treatment has been set for August 25. The site reported that the doctors treating Lohan — who has logged three previous stints in rehab — have recommended that she spend no more than 30 days at the UCLA Medical Center. Lohan is only on day 18 of her court-imposed rehab stay, but a number of outlets have reported that she could be released early from the treatment program. TMZ reported last week that the UCLA program typically runs for 45 days. When contacted by MTV News prior to Lohan’s jail stint, “Celebrity Rehab” host and addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky said that he believed that Lohan should spend the full 90 days in rehab to deal with her substance issues — and possibly stay there even longer. In 2007, Lohan was released from the Promises drug rehab program after 45 days of treatment, and she spent her first night after leaving the facility out at a Las Vegas nightclub. At the time, Pinsky said it was a sign of more trouble to come . “My expectation was that we were going to see more recovery because she extended her stay appropriately and seemed to be following the advice of professionals,” Pinsky said of Lohan’s trip to a Sin City club . “The problem is that early in treatment, you don’t have this active craving, and you think you can walk into an environment and be around the old triggers and not have it result in using, which is a common mistake.” It’s possible Lohan could be released after 45 days of inpatient care and ordered to spend the final 45 days in outpatient care, but a source told TMZ that’s not a likely scenario in her case. Last week, Holley told the site, “We are waiting to hear the assessment of doctors and other treatment professionals concerning the appropriate length of Ms. Lohan’s rehabilitation. We will defer to their expertise and to the wisdom and authority of Judge Fox in that regard.” Holley could not be reached for comment at press time. Jillian Michaels Sued for Dangerous Diet Product

Is Jillian Michaels trying to kill us? Possibly, according to a new lawsuit filed against the celebrity trainer. A woman referred to as “R.D.” in documents has filed a class action lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court that claims Jillian’s Triple Process Total Body Detox & Cleanse diet supplement contains a “potentially lethal combination of toxic ingredients. Also, it “might kill you.” Hmmm… can we feed it to Mel Gibson ? Among the ingredients the lawsuit singles out, as first reported by TMZ, are: Irish Moss Powder because it “causes gastrointestinal ulcers” and is “so toxic that it is the gel commonly applied to aircraft wings to dissolve ice.” Bearberry, which is “known to cause nausea and vomiting.” Yarrow, described as “a toxic lawn weed that causes dermatitis” Chinese Rhubarb, “a harsh laxative and dangerous diuretic that can cause sever dehydration and may cause irreversible liver damage” R.D. is seeking $10 million for the conspiracy she alleges is behind the attempt to hide these products from the consumer. This is the fourth time Jillian has been sued for potentially toxic supplement ingredients. Please just take our advice, people: if you wish to lose weight, eat in moderation and exercise. That’s really the only healthy way to do it.

Vienna Girardi Does Vegas, Promotes Team Vienna

What happened to that stuff about moving home to Florida? Looks like Vienna Girardi isn’t missing Jake Pavelka very much, nor does she have any intention of laying low or letting her 15 minutes of fame expire. Last weekend, The Bachelor star headed to the Sin City with her friends to celebrate her single status after her sham engagement to Jake unraveled. Vienna hosted a Single & Fabulous party Saturday at Tao Beach, where she even tossed out Team Vienna tank tops and offered shots to partygoers. Hopefully she kept the drunken crying to a minimum. SINGLE AND FABULOUS : Well, at least the first part . Interestingly, her crew that night included Jesse Csincsak, who Deanna Pappas picked a few seasons ago on The Bachelorette and broke up with soon after. “He was just giving her advice,” a source says. Dude certainly knows what she’s going through, although only one of them can be frequently seen in MySpace pics wearing next to nothing on Spring Break. Later that night, Vienna and her posse continued partying over at Lavo, where she kindly offered free shots to all of the bachelorettes in the house. No word if she has been in contact with Lee Smith , the ex-boyfriend who says he was putting it to her while she was still engaged to Jake Pavelka.

Rick Ross Got ‘Focused’ On The Albert Anastasia EP

With his tape dominating the streets, the Bawse tells Mixtape Daily how he got into ‘war’ mode to resuscitate his career. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross on his new mixtape, Albert Anastasia Photo: Maybach Music Mid-Season Salute: The Albert Anastasia EP Last year about this time, Rick Ross was in war mode, fighting for his career. People had questioned his street credibility and 50 Cent was straight going for his head. This year though, it’s rosy for Ricky Rozay. He has “Super High” getting spins on the radio and the records “(B.M.F.) Blowin’ Money Fast” and “MC Hammer” are dominating the streets. Ross’ whole outlook has changed. “That’s the beauty of art,” Ross told us. “You can take it and channel it any way you want to. Of course, I realize I put a lot of pollution out there as well that I wouldn’t this year. That was a part of me learning. I’ll forever be attracted to some form or fashion of war. I feel it’s competitive but at the same time, I’m focused on my numbers. I’m focused on my business. I’m focused on my brand. I wanna see other things blossom around me, versus back-and-forth with nothing. For the most part, I feel when you prioritize your business, that’s the result — that’s the advice I’ve been given for so long. I’m trying it out.” While Ross’ Teflon Don comes out July 20, for now, we have to turn our attention to one of the hottest mixtapes of the year: The Albert Anastasia EP. “It’s more than just an extended play,” Ross explained to Mixtape Daily of the tape. “Because when I started recording and it was sounding too good, I wanted to put more songs in there than what I wanted to initially. But it’s The Albert Anastasia EP. I named it that because Albert Anastasia was a self-made man. He was a boss. He was a lot less celebrated. He was more focused on getting his job done, handling his business. Of course, he ultimately came to an untimely demise. But I feel when it’s time to go, it’s always untimely, so what’s the difference?” “Sweet Life” with John Legend, “Knife Fight” with Kool G Rap and, of course, “300 Soldiers” are definite highlights. ” ‘Money Maker,’ free Lil Wayne,” Ross said. “Boi-1da did the production. We shot the clip in Barbados; we had a lot of fun out there. The video is real visual. It’s about where we come from and what a lot of people are willing to do to get where they going.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Kellie Martin to Miley Cyrus: Go to College!

For weeks, THG has been offering Miley Cyrus advice: put on pants, cut out the desperate antics, focus on country music – and shut up . But what do we know about it? We’re simply a (very attractive) celebrity gossip blog. We can’t relate to the life of a teenage celebrity. Kellie Martin can, however. The actress rose to fame on the sitcom Life Goes On and has remained grounded, most recently recurring on ER as the character of Lucy Knight and guest-starring on episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice . Asked by Fancast.com if she had any advice for Miley, Martin replied: “Go to college.
