BET Awards Nominations Led By Jay-Z, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Drake … And Justin Bieber

Bieber scores a surprise nod for Best New Artist. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images After performing at the World Series, headlining a 9/11 benefit concert at Madison Square Garden and being named MTV News’ Hottest MC in the Game, it’s no surprise that Jay-Z received the most nominations for the upcoming 2010 BET Awards. The Brooklyn MC scored nods in the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, Best Collaboration (“Empire State of Mind”), Video of the Year (“Empire State of Mind” and “Run this Town”) and Viewer’s Choice categories to lead the way with five nominations, it was announced Tuesday (May 18). Teen heart throb Justin Bieber picked up a surprise nomination for Best New Artist, his only recognition. “That was not a joke,” BET executive Stephen Hill said, laughing in response to the singer’s nod. Nas, Damian Marley Bring Political Distant Relatives Tour To NYC

Duo joined by Evil Genius Green Lantern for socially conscious show. By Shaheem Reid Lyrically, Nas has been at a higher altitude than his peers since the beginning of his career. His verbal achievements have become legendary. While admittedly, Nas sometimes has questionable beat selections, the Queensbridge native’s words have been so piercing that the guy can frankly get away with rapping over anything. And he has. Last year when Esco announced that he would be following up his album Untitled with a duet LP with a star outside of genre, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley , some of his fans didn’t know what to think. But if there is anyone who could actually pull it off, it’s Nas. Certainly there would be way more public pushback if, say, a Jay-Z, Eminem, T.I. or Young Jeezy would have set out on such an audacious musical venture. But with Nas, you know his spirit is free, and even in his mid-30s, the timeless mic king is almost as rebellious as when he was a 20-year-old kid fresh out of the Queensbridge projects. Last night, Nas and Jr. Gong touched down at New York’s Highline Ballroom for the second show of their Distant Relatives tour (the trek started this weekend in Chicago). The messages in the music steer clear of materialistic jargon and partying — the duo pushed thought provocation on worldwide subjects. Nas brought one of the great DJs in hip-hop, the Evil Genius Green Lantern. Marley came with his band, including backup singers, as well as a flag bearer who proudly and tirelessly waved the colors of Jamaica throughout the show. “What happened to us?” Nas rapped with force on “Tribes at War,” performed at the top of their set. “Geographically they moved us, from Africa/ We was once happiness pursuers/ Now we backstabbin’/ Combative and abusive/ African and Arab go at it, they most Muslim/ We should be movin’ in unison.” “Ancient People” came next, with Nas checking his BlackBerry while on the mic. Either he had an urgent text message or he couldn’t remember his lines, but nevertheless, Esco kept going. “Nah Mean” followed, with the Distant Relatives duo asking President Obama what he could do for them. From there, it was vintage Nas. The supreme MC went into some vintage material, including “Nas Is Like,” “Represent” and “Hip-Hop Is Dead.” “I hate the radio!” Nas yelled on the latter. “F— the radio.” Nas shouted out the Jamaican forefather of hip-hop, Kool Herc, and at the end of “If I Ruled the World” gave love to Guru. “My man Guru, he walks,” Nas said as his background singers sang, “we’ll walk right up to the sun. Hand in hand.” “This one’s about leaders,” Marley sang, from one of the album’s highlights, “Leaders.” “Let’s all change the world.” “The odds stacked against him/ He fights back Mac and Benzes/ Never puts cash or ass before a friendship/ He laughs last/ As some die young, he is still existing/ Somehow he got around the pitfalls of the system/ When he walks, we watch/ When we talks, we listen/ Leaders.”

Shakira Unveils ‘Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)’

Track is the official song of the 2010 World Cup and will benefit public health centers in Africa. By James Montgomery Photo: JEWEL SAMAD/ AFP/ Getty Images Fresh off her duet with Rascal Flatts frontman Gary LeVox on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” , Shakira has unveiled yet another collaboration … this one set to take place on an even bigger stage (yes, that’s actually possible). On her official site , she’s just posted a track called “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” which will serve as the official theme for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, set to kick off June 11 in South Africa. The track — a collabo between Shaki and South African Afro-fusion band Freshlyground — was co-produced by John Hill, who most recently produced a pair of songs from her 2009 album She Wolf. Like much of her work, it’s a poly-sonic affair: According to a statement on her site, the chorus of the song borrows from a favorite Cameroonian marching chant that was popularized by the group Golden Voices. Shakira and Freshlyground will perform “Waka Waka” at the World Cup closing ceremonies, held before the final match on July 11 in Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium. The song will be available for download through digital retailers the week of May 11, and will also be included on Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album, set to be released the week of May 31 by Sony Music Entertainment. A Spanish-language version of the track will also be available. Proceeds from the sale of the album will benefit FIFA’s “20 Centers for 2010” initiative, which aims to achieve positive social change through football (that’s “soccer” to us Americans) by building 20 “Football for Hope” public health centers across Africa. In addition to her performance at the closing ceremonies, Shakira will also be one of the headline performers at the official FIFA World Cup Kick-off Celebration Concert on June 10, broadcast from Orlando Stadium in Soweto/Johannesburg South Africa. A video for “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” is also set to debut in mid-May. Banana Gin Has Killed 80 People in Uganda

After drinking an illegal home-made banana gin laced with methanol has killed about 80 people in Uganda. Patrick Tusiime said that many people had died because relatives denied that victims were drinking the gin, known waragi. Deaths occurred over the past three weeks in the south-western Kabale district. Authorities were conducting a house-to-house search for the gin. Waragi is a drink across Uganda; they use this as an alternative alcohol because most of them cannot afford to buy an industrialized one. Almost 120 jerry cans of waragi were seized. All alcohol found were confiscated but people were stubborn and have found ingenious ways to hide it. Affected individuals became blind and suffered liver and kidney failure before dying. Tutu: In Africa, Human Rights Moving "Backward"

When we were in Uganda we often heard the refrain that it is “un-African” to be gay, and that homosexuality was an import from a Western world that had broken its covenant with God. These are the central arguments that religious and political leaders in Uganda are using to push through legislation that would make homosexuality illegal — presumably more illegal than it is under the long-existing legislation that already forbids it. But in Friday’s Washington Post, one of Africa’s leading religious leaders, Bishop Desmond Tutu, takes on both questions and what he says is “a wave of hate is spreading across my beloved continent.” “Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people are part of so many families. They are part of the human family. They are part of God's family. And of course they are part of the African family.” There are many, including members of Tutu’s own denomination who we met in Uganda, who would take issue with him. But while arguing that it is un-Christian to persecute gays in his op-ed, Tutu raises an important point: Uganda is far from the only African country where it is dangerous to be openly gay or for that matter, where homosexuality is illegal. In fact, 40 of the 53 nations in Africa have laws on the books making homosexuality illegal. Tutu's home country of South Africa is the only one to allow any form of same-sex marriage. So while much talk has centered on the proposed “Anti-Homosexuality Bill” in Uganda, the entire continent of Africa is engrossed in the debate. And, as we see in examples like the Prop 8 controversy in my adopted home state of California, so are we. Read Tutu's full op-ed here, and learn more about the new gay rights battle ground in this piece from Foreign Policy. Kenna On The Inspiration Behind ‘Summit On The Summit: Kilimanjaro’

Documentary premieres Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. By James Montgomery Kenna Photo: MTV In 2005, Kenna — who had long heard stories of the majesty and mystery of Mt. Kilimanjaro from his father — decided to climb the peak. He made it to Kosovo Camp, a clearing located some 16,000 feet above sea level (and still 3,000 feet from the summit), and then pushed onward toward the top of the mountain. He didn’t make it. Five years later, he decided to make the trek again, this time in the hope of calling attention to the global clean-water crisis. Both the trip and the cause were personal to Kenna, because when his father was a child in Ethiopia, he lost his brother and friends to water-borne diseases and, as he put it, “I could have been one of those kids.” So, in January, with a crew of nearly 300 backing him up — including fellow musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, actors Jessica Biel , Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas, plus a team of scientists, United Nations ambassadors and skilled guides — he headed back up the mountain. (His friend Justin Timberlake intended to join the trek but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts; Justin introduces the film .) And their trip is documented in “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro,” a 90-minute film that premieres Sunday (March 14) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. And apart from detailing the group’s massive of scaling Africa’s tallest mountain, the film also contains a symbolic message, one that applies not just to the trek, but to tackling seemingly insurmountable issues like global clean water: that together, we can accomplish great things. “When you go by yourself and you’re on a solo mission, it’s not necessarily something that registers at the end of the day. No one has your back. Getting to the top of Kilimanjaro this time had everything to do with the fact that I had an army with me,” Kenna told MTV News. “Some of us would literally look at each other and say, ‘If you weren’t here, I wouldn’t have made it.’ Our director, Mike Bonfiglio, was basically watching Isabel Lucas, and saw her dedication when she was really, really ill at the top of this mountain. And he, literally, was like ‘She made it, I’ve got to do this.’ ” Unlike his previous attempt, this time around, Kenna would not be denied in his quest to make it to the peak of Kilimanjaro. He had made his mind up, and he wouldn’t be denied: because he had friends with him, and because he knew there were millions of people depending on him to spread his message. “I think what happened is our medic told us, ‘You know what? It’s going to be something you can actually accomplish, even if you’re completely ill and sick and close to dying, it will be fine,’ ” he said. “She made it so we felt like we could deal with being uncomfortable, and at that moment, I was like ‘I don’t care. If anything goes on with me, at this point, I’ve come this far, I’m not going down.’ ” Tune in to “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro” Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. And find out what you can do to help solve the global water crisis now at the “Summit on the Summit” Web site .
