Guetta and his wife, Cathy, present their ‘F— Me I’m Famous’ brand in the U.S. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: MTV News MIAMI — French beatsmith David Guetta and his wife Cathy plan to launch their clubber power-party brand in the U.S. in a big way. Called “F— Me I’m Famous,” it’s named after the electronic dance music party that takes place every year as part of the summer EDM circuit in Ibiza, Spain. On Saturday (March 26) at Club Mansion in Miami, Cathy and David delivered a brand debut of sorts for attendees of Miami Music Week . The Guettas and record label EMI have signed a global partnership to promote F.M.I.F. events around the world, and they’re banking on seeing it blossom here in the States. With frequent collaborator and friend will.i.am and Dutch house-music producer Sidney Sampson by his side, David Guetta took to the decks just after 1 a.m. Saturday and charged into a vicious Afrojack tune, followed by his hit single “One Love” and “Gettin’ Over You,” the chorus of which fans in the house knew by heart. As Guetta dropped out the sound, the audience belted out Fergie’s vocals without missing a beat. After spinning hit singles “Sexy Chick” and Flo Rida’s “Club Can’t Handle Me,” Guetta dropped in his fiery mix of Far East Movement’s “Like a G6,” a joint the DJ/producer has no plans to release but which he’s shared with lil’ brother Afrojack for their touring gigs. The Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow” followed. When we caught up with Guetta on Friday afternoon, he was pleased to announce the brand has found a home in Las Vegas. “I’m super-excited about this, the F— Me I’m Famous party,” Guetta said. “I’m taking over Vegas. This is gonna be crazy. We are starting a pool party at Wet Republic, and that’s gonna be every Sunday. “It’s the first time we are gonna do a residency like this, except in Ibiza. We’re gonna do also three really big concerts at the Joint [at the Vegas Hard Rock Hotel & Casino]. We have one for Memorial Day. That’s gonna be a big thing. We’re gonna come with the whole production from Europe. So this is probably an important moment for our brand, F— Me I’m Famous, starting to find a life and a home in America. And now his second U.S. release, packed with hip-hop heavy-hitters, seems primed for chart success. MTV News caught up with the EDM producer (born Nick van de Wall) for a skype chat last week, and he talked about his contribution to Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now,” the latest offering from the singer’s upcoming F.A.M.E. album. The track is a fast-rapping flurry of awesome self-indulgence courtesy of Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne and Chris, with an eerie downtempo beat cooked up by chefs Afrojack and Diplo. The pair of producers previously collaborated on “Pon De floor,” off Diplo’s Major Lazer full-length release, and according to Afrojack, “Look at Me Now” is the product of a beat he’d passed along to the Philadelphia beatsmith. “Yeah, Diplo called me,” Afrojack recalled. “He was like, ‘We are in the studio right now, and we are gonna do a track on the beat.’ And I was like, ‘OK, whatever. Have fun.’ ” Eventually, “Look at Me Now,” was born. While Afrojack sounded casual about the song’s evolution, he said he’s certainly pleased with the finished product. “I just love these kind of people on a track like this,” he said. “It’s like hip-hop, but really weird kind of hip-hop. “Busta’s verse on it is really sick,” he continued. “It’s like I can’t even hear what he said, but I love the part where he goes [ mimics Busta’s rapid flow ], and then pauses and goes rapping really quickly. And I don’t know how to do it, I don’t even try. But it was really, really cool.” So what’s next for Afrojack? By Akshay Bhansali Afrojack Photo: MTV News “Lady Gaga, she’s a freak,” Dutch DJ/producer Afrojack told MTV News on Saturday, “so I thought, ‘Gotta make a freaky song!’ ” He’s referring to his remix of Lady Gaga’s most recent single and video, “Alejandro,” which is among a collection of remixes featured on Gaga’s recent Alejandro: The Remixes EP. In the electronic/dance music world, Nick van de Wall (a.k.a. Afrojack) is one of the genre’s rising stars: His mentor is crossover star David Guetta , and he has been instrumental in popularizing the “Holland House” — or as he calls it, “bleep” — sound. Interestingly, when Gaga’s camp put in their request for the remix, at first Afrojack thought it better to deliver a more pop-radio-friendly track. But as fans of Lady Gaga have come to know, she prides herself on keeping it real. Turns out Gaga wanted a dirty, more underground, Afrojack joint. “First I thought, ‘Let me just give them a soft mix,’ ” Afrojack recalled. “And they were like, ‘No — we want that crazy Afrojack vibe.’ And so I went really crazy. I was even in the studio like, ‘This is pretty damn hard.’ I sent it and they were like, ‘ F— yeah!’ ” Afrojack also told MTV News that he recently completed an official remix for Diddy/Dirty Money’s “Hello, Good Morning,” and that fans should expect some serious house. “It’s like really, really underground,” Afrojack said. “Even more than the ‘Alejandro’ remix — like even more back to the underground, purely for the house heads, because I know [Diddy] works with Felix Da Housecat. Promoter Cottontail embraces the Dutch house sound sweeping the clubs this year. By Akshay Bhansali Roxy Cottontail Photo: Getty Images After making a dramatic splash at this year’s Winter Music Conference, Dutch electronic DJ/producer Afrojack has been on his first U.S. tour for these past few weeks. This weekend will see him spinning on the East Coast for a gig Friday night (June 11) at Voyeur in Philadelphia, and on Saturday at Santos Party House in New York. It’s been an impressive year thus far for Afrojack (born Nick van de Wall). The 22-year-old rising star’s electro-house single “Bangduck” is a house-set favorite, and his collaboration with crossover star David Guetta , “Louder Than Words,” has been among the top downloads on the Beatport.com charts since the song dropped just over two weeks ago. Saturday’s gig at Santos will mark Afrojack’s first performance in New York, and fittingly, he will be sharing the bill with famous New York party promoter Roxy Cottontail. Cottontail, who’s had a hand in furthering the careers of the likes of Kid Cudi, Diplo and Spank Rock, is now an artist in her own right (though she still throws parties from time to time). She released “Let’s Make Nasty,” produced by electro-clash DJ/producer/promoter Larry Tee, and Afrojack went on to remix the song in time for this year’s WMC. The song quickly became one of the more sought-after house songs of the spring. “Larry and I had talked about who should do the remix,” Cottontail told MTV News this week. “We both agreed that Diplo should do it, but he was busy with Major Lazer. Then Larry said, ‘There’s this kid coming out, his name is Afrojack. He actually just remixed Major Lazer, and it’s getting a lot of play. I think he’s gonna be huge.’ Ultra [Records] had him remix it, and I was like, ‘This is awesome.’ I think it was kind of like a blessing that Diplo didn’t do it and gave the opportunity to Afrojack. “This past year, the Dutch house — Holland house — that sound has really taken over,” Cottontail continued. “And when I heard it, it was such a progressive sound. Very electronic, but still with a poppy kind of element to it. I really think he put the cherry on top of the cake.” Cottontail assured MTV News that she and Afrojack will be performing their hit song on stage this weekend in New York. And following the success of her first venture into the Holland house genre, she had her next single, “My Bad,” produced by Dutch electro outfit Party Squad, who have also collaborated with Diplo and Afrojack in the past. “I think it’s really cute, catchy, kind of naughty, but not offensive,” she said of the new track, which she hopes to release by the end of the summer. “It’s about making mistakes, but doing it a cute way.”
