Jack White Rocks Hangout Fest, Avoids Getting A Tan

Headliner White closed out the first day of the beachfront festival in Alabama with a set long on hits, solos. By James Montgomery Jack White performs at Hangout Fest in Mobile, AL Photo: WireImage GULF SHORES, Alabama — Judging by his cadaverous complexion, Jack White probably doesn’t make it out to the beach all that often. Which is probably why his Friday night set at the Hangout Festival felt less like a headlining gig and more like one long (long) victory lap: He was determined to enjoy the experience. Sure, White took the stage long after the sun had set over the stretch of white-sand beach the Hangout calls home (it’s definitely the only fest where going barefoot is not only a viable option, but practically encouraged), but spurred on by the cheers of a raucous crowd and cooled by the gentle breeze of the Gulf, he tore through a wild 90-minute set. It was one that dove deep into his back catalog — featuring not only White’s new Blunderbuss tunes, but also songs from the White Stripes, the Dead Weather, the Raconteurs and the Danger Mouse-helmed Rome project too — and saw him break out roughly 100 fret-assaulting guitar solos, two backing bands … and exactly one fedora. He spoke barely a word (and nary a metaphor ) during his time onstage, preferring instead to let the music do the talking. Or, more precisely, the yelling. Because from the moment he kicked things off with a high-octane version of the Stripes’ “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” to the second the final echoes of “Seven Nation Army” were escaping out into the night air, White was plenty loud. And equally loose. “I Cut Like a Buffalo,” “Love Interruption” and (especially) “Ball and Biscuit” each unspooled over several minutes, with White stomping and pulling solos from his guitar, goofy smile on his face, while both of his crack backing bands followed close behind. It was clear that, on Friday night, White wanted to jam. Which is why, in just about every conceivable way, this wasn’t the kind of show you’d expect from the normally uptight White. Of course, he was still dressed like a country mortician and, sure, he made his backing bands dress in near-matching unis (black for his male band, the Buzzards; white for the female counterpart, the Peacocks), and the lighting scheme onstage never strayed from “ethereal blue,” but he seemed to draw genuine joy from letting his songs breathe: He turned “Hotel Yorba” into a hoedown, lent extra punch to new tracks like “Sixteen Saltines” and “Hypocritical Kiss” and led the audience in an extended chant during “Army,” which has almost inexplicably become his signature song on both sides of the Atlantic. Maybe it had something to do with the Gulf Stream, the postcard-perfect setting of the Hangout Fest (they have palm trees on the beach !) and the day of terrific music he was closing out — Friday also featured standout sets from Wilco, Alabama Shakes and Yelawolf, to name just a few — or maybe White just wanted to cut loose. But last night, his solos rang loud and proud, his voice was voluminous and creaky in all the right ways, and both of his bands proved worthy traveling partners on the lengthy musical excursions on which he led them. In short, White certainly seems to be enjoying life as a solo artist. Especially when he’s playing the songs he made with others. Now, if he could only work on that tan … you get the feeling he’d become a regular down here at the Hangout. Did you catch Jack White’s set at the Hangout Festival? Adam Yauch The ‘Ringleader’ On ‘Fight For Your Right’ Set

‘Adam was always into doing the craziest stuff,’ director Ric Menello tells MTV News of the late Beastie Boy. By Nadeska Alexis The Beastie Boys in 1987 Photo: Getty Images Adam Yauch leaves behind an impressive catalog of music and videos with his Beastie Boys brothers Ad-Rock and Mike D, but “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” and “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” are, without a doubt, two of their most iconic releases. Ric Menello helmed the videos for both songs, with some help from co-director Adam Dubin, and looking back now, Menello tells MTV News, jokingly, “If I knew that people were going to be looking at them 26 years later, I would’ve done better!” While attending graduate school for film at NYU back in the ’80s, Menello befriended a young Adam Yauch, Ad-Rock and Mike D, who kept him company at his part-time job as a desk clerk, talking about movies and music into the wee hours of the morning. “I wrote the movie ‘Tougher Than Leather,’ which the Beastie Boys appeared in, then Rick Rubin suggested I would be a good director for ‘Fight for Your Right’ because I had new ideas and it was better to fail at a new idea than to succeed with a crappy old idea,” Menello explained. And although he was hesitant to take on the job, for fear of “ruining their careers,” he eventually enlisted the help of Adam Dubin to co-direct, adding that he “needed someone to blame if it stunk.” Once he accepted the job, they collectively brainstormed ideas and set to work. “We originally had an idea we couldn’t use, which was them disrupting a high-society, classy party at a gallery — because at that point, we didn’t know too many people who were classy or high-society,” he explained. “I came up with the plot, Rick Rubin and Adam added to it, and then Rick, Adam and I directed it. The Beastie Boys definitely had creative input, and I recall Adam being the ringleader. They were friendly, cooperative, enthusiastic and creative guys, especially Adam.” Menello admits that he never could’ve predicted how legendary the clip would become. “It was kind of a dumb video, but it was done in a very sophisticated way visually. I often say the style of the video is ‘stupidity done in an intelligent way,’ ” he said. “The concept was infantile rebellion, and they were good actors for that. It wouldn’t have worked if not for Yauch, Rock and Mike D being pretty good actors and being funny. The whole point was for it to be comical as well as musical. “Adam Yauch, at that point, was the ringleader — he had a very dry sense of humor, a little different than everyone else’s. He was also enthusiastic to do anything, which came in handy on that video and when we did ‘No Sleep Till Brooklyn,’ ” Menello continued. “If something had to be done that was the least bit risky, he volunteered immediately. There was a television set that we had to smash with a sledgehammer and it was very important that it didn’t look like a fake TV, so we made a hole in the video tube, which meant that there might have been an explosion — but he didn’t care! He was like, ‘I’m gonna smash the TV!’ All throughout the video, he was like, ‘I gotta do it, it’s gonna be great, we have to have that shot!’ And he stepped right up to do it. He was always into doing the craziest stuff, but he was a keen guy, very smart and quick to learn, so it didn’t surprise me that a few years later, he started directing his own music videos.” The fun didn’t stop with ‘Fight for Your Right,’ though, as the boys teamed up with Menello once again for “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.” “My favorite moments in the ‘No Sleep Till Brooklyn’ video were when Yauch was called upon to be Bugs Bunny and he got the face just right for that. He also had to figure out how to open the safe they were robbing during the concert, and he figured out the best way to open up the safe was to slam his head on top of it. So he smacked his head on top of the safe and it opened, and I thought that was hysterically funny. Usually when people try to open a safe they use tools, but he said, an exact quote, ‘My generation smashes its head onto it. That’s what my generation does to open a safe.’ “Even when they were worried if something might not work, they always gave their all. We really helped make it work,” Menello added, as a final thought. “It didn’t surprise me when later, besides comedy and satire, their music became more complicated, and they got into social issues.” Share your memories of Adam on Twitter using the hashtag #RIPMCA. The Baytown Disco Trailer: Smokin’ Aces Meets… Gigli?

If the Tremor brothers were slightly less-deranged they might be the Southern-fried antiheroes of The Baytown Disco , whose trailer reveals a startling lack of disco and copious amounts of gun-battling, yee-hawing, and evil Billy Bob Thornton . (Oh, evil Billy Bob! How I love you.) Watch as Eva Longoria taps the trio of redneck bros to kidnap her godson — and in the process, invite road warriors, Thornton’s “whore assassins,” and Stefan from The Vampire Diaries to hunt them down — in Baytown Disco ‘s Smokin’ Aces -meets- Gigli trailer. The Oodie brothers are played by Clayne Crawford (who actually battled the Tremor bros. in the direct-to-video sequel Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball ), Daniel Cudmore ( Twilight , X-Men ), and Travis Fimmel; The “Southern whip-ass extravaganza” is directed by Barry Battles from his Black List ’09 script with Griffin Hood and also stars Andre Braugher (!), Meagan Good, Michael Rapaport, Paul Wesley, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Zoe Bell, and Agnes Brucker. The synopsis: The rousing rebel spirit of a family of Southern thugs takes off at breakneck speed in “The Baytown Disco” — a wickedly playful, high-velocity action-comedy in which three infamously ruthless Alabama brothers find themselves on the wrong side of crooked cops, relentless Feds, mad mobsters, road pirates, tomahawk-wielding bikers, tricky femme fatales and an unforgettable cast of characters as colorful as they are lethal when they finally try to do a single good deed. Academy Award® winner Billy Bob Thornton and Golden Globe winner Eva Longoria headline this wildly explosive, yet ultimately moving, tale of honor breaking out among thieves with madcap results. It all starts when the fetching Celeste (Longoria) has a falling out with her nefarious ex-husband Carlos (Thornton) who kidnaps her beloved son, Rob (Thomas Brodie Sangster). Knowing her ex can be a maniacal psychopath, not to mention a bit trigger-happy, she turns for help to the most bad-ass, lawless hit-man trio in Alabama: the Oodie Brothers. Ringleader Brick (Clayne Crawford, “24,” “The Glades”), mute wrestling phenom Lincoln (Daniel Cudmore, “The Twilight Saga”), and the baby of the brothers, the kick-ass G.I. McQueen (Travis Fimmel, “The Beast”) are known for being mean as a bag of rattlesnakes –and measly kidnap rescues are not on their menu of services. But when Brick is unexpectedly moved by Celeste’s plight, what he thinks is going to be an easy smash-and-grab job turns out to be the most hair-raising and hilariously intense adventure of his and his brothers’ harrowing careers. Suddenly the Oodies have their hometown Sheriff (Andre Braugher, “Men of a Certain Age,” “Salt”), in a tangle; a pesky DEA Agent (Paul Wesley, “Vampire Diaries”) on their trail, and Carlos and his heinous assortment of henchman out for their hides. With no one quite who or what they seem, they are headed for a showdown — and a shot at redemption — they never saw coming. The Baytown Disco is seeking distribution, release TBA.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Beck, Sigur Ros, Big Boi and more are also set to appear at the fest, along with a host of bands shaking the rust off from their lengthy breaks — Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Regina Spektor, Grandaddy (!) etc — and hotly tipped newcomers like Alabama Shakes, Of Monsters and Men and Yellow Ostrich.
