Second Oil Rig has been leaking in Gulf since April 30th

In the wake of yet another possible oil spill in the Gulf region, the United States Coast Guard has decided to launch an investigation into the dark waters surrounding Taylor Energy Corporation's Ocean Saratoga rig, resting only 40 miles away from the Deepwater Horizon rig. Though the rig has been leaking since at least April 30, the rig's owner, Taylor Energy Corporation, and operator, Diamond Offshore Drilling, are both declining to comment. Taylor's spokesperson Denise Fields told Huffington Post that the company would be issuing a press release this afternoon. Mobile, Alabama's Press Register reported that a 10-mile long slick emanating from the rig is visible from space. Earlier today, Mother Jones's Kate Sheppard reported that John Amos of West Virginia-based nonprofit SkyTruth, was the first to notice the spill, observing an oil slick eleven miles off the coast of Louisiana. After viewing satellite images of the reported second spill, Amos concluded that the Deep Water Horizon and the Saratoga spills are independent of one another, meaning the Gulf cleanup situation may be getting worse before it gets better. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/08/ocean-saratoga-another-oi_n_604812.html http://blog.al.com/live/2010/06/another_gulf_oil_spill_well_ne.html added by: jeffissleeping

After Peruvian officials announced Wednesday that Joran van der Sloot is the prime suspect in the death of 21-year-old Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel, Chilean police confirmed he had entered their country two days earlier. Chilean Police Inspector Douglas Rodriguez in Arica told The Associated Press there was no record of van der Sloot leaving Chile and authorities were searching the country's dry, sparsely populated northern provinces for him. In Lima, police Gen. Cesar Guardia said at a news conference that the slain woman was found Wednesday in a room at a hotel where van der Sloot had been staying and that she had been seen with the suspect early Sunday, when she was killed. The killing occurred exactly five years after the May 30, 2005, disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway during a high school trip in Aruba, a Dutch Caribbean island where van der Sloot's late father was a prominent judge. Prosecutors said van der Sloot is still their main suspect in the case even though he was never charged. The Dutch government said Interpol issued an international arrest warrant for van der Sloot in the Peru killing. But Rodriguez, the Chilean police official, said authorities there had received only a request to locate the suspect, not an arrest warrant. Guardia, the Peruvian police general, said the 22-year-old Dutchman was in Peru for a poker tournament and appears with the dead woman in a video taken at a Lima casino early Sunday. The two were later seen entering the hotel by one of its employees about 5 a.m. and the Dutchman departed alone about four hours later, he said. “We have an interview with a worker at the hotel who says she saw this foreigner with the victim enter his room,” said Guardia. The woman's body was found face down on the hotel room floor Wednesday, abrasions on her face and body, and signs of trauma, Guardia said. He said she was clothed. Asked if she had been asphyxiated, Guardia said he was waiting for autopsy results on the cause of death. MORE ON LINK added by: 02

Palin: Drill Baby Drill, but blame Obama for the spill

For OpEdNews: Steven Leser – Writer Sarah Palin is weighing in on the BP oil spill, specifically, who is to blame for it and/or who is to blame for the spill taking so long to stop. I guess she can see the Deepwater Horizon site from her house. On Fox News, Palin had this to say: “the oil companies who have so supported President Obama in his campaign and are supportive of him now …[Palin mused whether]…there's any connection there to President Obama taking so doggone long to get in there, to dive in there, and grasp the complexity and the potential tragedy that we are seeing here in the Gulf of Mexico.” Palin is talking about the ability to grasp complexities? Sarah “in what respect Charlie” and “I know foreign policy because I can see Russia from my house when Putin rears his head over Alaska” Palin? “Death Panels” Sarah wants to talk complexities? Sarah, if you are so confident of your grasp of 'complexities' why don't you ask the producers of the shows you are on to put you head-to-head on various issues against some of the Democrats who appear on Fox? Even though I am not exactly your biggest fan, I'll volunteer, how about that? Any time on any issue. Yes Sarah, this is me, who has never held public office and should therefore be easy pickings for a former mayor and governor, calling you out. The suggestion from Palin is that Obama took the most money from the oil and gas industry and she and her running mate, John McCain were innocent of this and thus would not have been influenced. The LA Times performed some research and found to whom the oil companies contributed the most money: “The oil and gas industry donated $2.4 million to Palin's running mate, Republican John McCain, in the 2008 election cycle, and nearly $900,000 to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics' opensecrets.org website.” It ought to be pointed out that President Obama received tens of millions of dollars in contributions of $100 or less from working Americans all over the country including places like Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. If we are talking about amounts of money influencing people, then one would have to conclude that Obama is working 24×7 on the needs and problems of average working Americans. Sarah Palin typifies the 21st century Republican politician and use of Republican strategy, throw a plethora of accusations at Democrats without any regard to whether they are true and if one sticks, keep using it. Each instance of this is more galling than the next. Its as if Republicans are emboldened by the fact that they keep getting away with it. These latest statements by Palin are perhaps the most egregious example. The fact that Palin who is Miss Big Oil champion herself is trying to assert that someone else is somehow more beholden to the oil companies is unmitigated gall. Who can forget these excerpts that Palin uttered during her Vice Presidential debate with Joe Biden: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EP9ahIdBCr8 “”The chant is “drill, baby, drill.” And that's what we hear all across this country in our rallies because people are so hungry for those domestic sources of energy to be tapped into. “Barack Obama and Sen. Biden, you've said no to everything in trying to find a domestic solution to the energy crisis that we're in. You even called drilling — safe, environmentally-friendly drilling offshore as raping the outer continental shelf. There — with new technology, with tiny footprints even on land, it is safe to drill and we need to do more of that. ” http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt =A0WTb_jAb_xLOhEAdLijzbkF/SIG=134d42glo/EXP=1274921280/**http%3a//www.chumpingstones.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/sarah-palin-kissing.jpg What happened in the gulf is the responsibility of people who operated on exactly the same assumptions that Palin did. That is the mentality that caused us to be where we are now. This is the point at which Ms. Palin should be saying, “Ya know, doggone it, we were wrong when we said that drilling in the gulf was safe, you betcha.” She has no right to be out there making accusations against other people. This is mea culpa time for Palin and the rest of pro-drilling America. By the way, Sarah, your running mate, John McCain, was the only one of the four people on the 2008 national ticket who was against a windfall profit tax for the oil companies yet you go on national television and have the nerve to accuse others of being in bed with the oil companies. It's hard to believe that the first major Republican politician and first Republican President was Abraham Lincoln, a man noted for his honesty and his brilliance. Today's Republicans, like Sarah Palin, do not resemble him at all. added by: Stoneyroad

2010 Miss USA Title Was Crowned To Miss Michigan

MISS USA title was finally crowned at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino along the Las Vegas Strip. Newly crowned 24-year old Arab-American from Michigan.  Rima Fakih beat out all other 50 beautiful women representing their state for the much coveted crown for this year.  She outshone everyone after she carried herself confidently in an orange and gold bikini then wore a strapless white gown. And during the question-and-answer portion, she wittily answered that health insurance should also cover birth control pills. Fakih is a Lebanese immigrant wherein her family practices both Christian and Muslim religions.  They had moved to United States when she was still a baby.  Fakih was raised in New York, attended a Catholic school.  Then in 2003, she and her family moved to Michigan. It was not stated whether Fakih was the first Arab-American, Muslim, or immigrant to win the Miss USA crown title. Fakih told reporters she sold her car after graduating college in Michigan to help pay for her run in the Miss Michigan USA pageant. She said she believed she had the title on Sunday after glancing at pageant owner Donald Trump as she awaited the results with the first runner-up, Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard. “That’s the same look that he gives them when he says, ‘You’re hired,’” on Trump’s reality show “The Apprentice,” she said. “She’s a great girl,” said Trump, who owns the pageant with NBC in a joint venture. In a moment that was replayed during the broadcast, Fakih nearly fell while finishing her walk in her gown because of the length of its train. But she made it without a spill and went on to win. “I did it here, I better not do it at Miss Universe,” she said. “Modeling does help, after all.” Fakih replaces Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton and won a spot representing the United States this summer in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. She also gets a one-year lease in a New York apartment with living expenses, an undisclosed salary, and various health, professional and beauty services. During the interview portion, Fakih was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should because it’s costly. “I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it’s a controlled substance,” Fakih said. Woolard handled the night’s toughest question, about Arizona’s new immigration law. Woolard said she supports the law, which requires police enforcing another law to verify a person’s immigration status if there’s “reasonable suspicion” that the person is in the country illegally. She said she’s against illegal immigration but is also against racial profiling. “I’m a huge believer in states’ rights. I think that’s what’s so wonderful about America,” Woolard said. “So I think it’s perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law.” “The Office” actor Oscar Nunez was booed as he asked the question and asked the audience to wait until he finished the question before they reacted. The panel of judges came up with the questions themselves. Miss Virginia USA Samantha Evelyn Casey was the second runner-up, Miss Colorado USA Jessica Hartman was third runner-up, and Miss Maine USA Katherine Ashley Whittier was the fourth runner-up. Most of the field of contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia were eliminated just after the pageant began and the entire group danced onstage to “TiK ToK” by Ke$ha. A panel of eight judges, including NBA star Carmelo Anthony, Treasure Island casino-hotel owner Phil Ruffin and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, were judging the girls throughout the night. After 15 contestants strutted in swimsuits, five were eliminated. Another five were eliminated after the evening gown competition. Miss Nebraska USA Belinda Renee Wright won the Miss Congeniality award, roughly one week after her father was killed in a farm accident. Miss Alabama USA Audrey Moore won Miss Photogenic after an online fan vote. The pageant aired live to East Coast viewers on NBC. The competition, which is not affiliated with the Miss America pageant, was hosted by celebrity chef Curtis Stone and NBC correspondent Natalie Morales. 2010 Miss USA Title Was Crowned To Miss Michigan is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading
