Drake’s ‘Fireworks’ Begins Story Of Thank Me Later

‘It’s really where I am in my life right now,’ Drake says of song he’s previewing on tour. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News Fans of Drake’s are going to be treated to a preview of yet another track off of his Thank Me Later LP , dropping June 15, when they go to his Away From Home Tour this spring. The 23-year-old is performing the first verse of the much-anticipated new song “Fireworks” at his concerts. Before his show at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania on Monday night, Drizzy explained to MTV News why he was letting the crowd sample the song. “The song itself is the first song on the album; I think it’s the biggest indicator of what the album is gonna be like,” he said. “That’s why I picked that song to go first, and that’s why I wrote the first verse like that. It’s really where I am in my life right now. I know they’re looking forward to the album, so I want them to get a feel of how the story starts off.” “Fireworks” starts with the actual sound of fireworks in the background. From there, Drizzy begins talking about his life, joking that his 15 minutes of fame started about an hour ago. “It truly is a story,” he added of the album. “At no point in the album does it fall off and become about some songs I slapped together. It’s all a story from beginning to end. Just like So Far Gone was. It’s that time.” The Away From Home Tour, with openers Francis and the Lights and K-os, runs through the end of May. Dr. Dre Says Jay-Z Collaboration, ‘Under Pressure,’ Could Be Out In Two Weeks

Dre also tells CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo that long-awaited Detox LP is ‘definitely’ coming out this year. By Jayson Rodriguez Dr. Dre Photo: Denise Truscello/WireImage Dr. Dre’s long-awaited Detox LP is no longer just urban legend. The producer has announced that the first single, “Under Pressure,” featuring Jay-Z , will hit the airwaves this month. The West Coast hip-hop icon revealed the information Monday (April 6) during an interview on “Closing Bell With Maria Bartiromo” on CNBC. “Hopefully we’ll be releasing that in the next two weeks or so,” he said of the track. “And I’m definitely gonna be putting out the album this year. Finally. I think everyone is gonna be happy with it.” The move is the first tangible evidence that the album will actually be released. In the past, Dre has repeatedly attempted to assure fans that the follow-up to Dr. Dre 2001 (a.k.a. The Chronic 2001 ) would eventually see the light of day. But as the years passed and material for Detox instead landed on albums by Eminem and 50 Cent, fans compared Dr. Dre’s promises to those made by Axl Rose when he withheld a Guns N’ Roses follow-up album for 15 years until the 2008 release of Chinese Democracy. It’s been 11 years since Dre last released an album. But late last year, in an interview with MTV News, Dre told Jay-Z to “Come holler” and contribute to Detox. Over the weekend, Dre (via Jimmy Iovine) confirmed Jay-Z landed on the project when he spoke to ESPN while attending a Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees baseball game. Word first arose about the collaboration when E! correspondent Michael Yo tweeted late last month that the two worked on a song that Dre’s label, Interscope Records, was very happy about. In the meantime, Dre put the pressure on himself, telling Bartiromo he has no other projects on his plate at the time. “That’s it right now,” he said, referring to Detox. Just trying to finish this record, finally get it done and get it out and start promoting it.” What do you think about a Dr. Dre and Jay-Z collaboration? Do you think Detox can live up to the hype after all these years? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Dr. Dre Jay-Z

MTV News catches up with the rapper before his Away From Home Tour opening night. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images SLIPPERY ROCK, Pennsylvania — Monday night (April 5) is a big one for Drake. The 23-year-old performer is opening his Away From Home Tour at Slippery Rock University and is set to take the stage around 9 p.m. ET. Talking to MTV News earlier in the evening, the Young Money franchise player revealed the release date for his much-anticipated debut LP, Thank Me Later : June 15. The date isn’t the only gem the “Best I Ever Had” rapper and two-time Grammy nominee dropped. He also revealed that he’ll be performing a new song from his album on tour called “Fireworks.” So far, Drake has released one single from the upcoming album: “Over.” “We took a trip to Jamaica, where I did a lot of work for my album,” he told us on the “Over” video set last month. “There was this calm before the storm, and ‘Over’ represented the storm to me. It’s the moment. I wanted to emerge at first from this album and just let people know ‘This is how I’m coming out in the public eye. I’m ready for anything.’ Then when you get the album, it’s like, ‘Oh, he’s still human. He’s still thinking the same way.’ I wanted people to understand I could have lost it. ‘Over’ could have been my entire album. Just ’cause that’s what this industry and game will do to you if you lose yourself.” Drake’s Away From Home Tour goes on for the next couple of months with openers Francis and the Lights and K-os. “They’re killing it right now,” Drake said shortly after taking in Francis and the Lights’ set on Monday. Will Drake’s album be deemed a classic when it comes out on June 15? Let us know in the comments! Stick with MTV News for much more from Drake’s opening night. Related Artists Drake

Dark Side of the Moon Patrol – The MOON8 Review

Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most important albums in popular music. With over 45 million copies sold, an unbeatable record 741 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and the standard by which audiophiles show off their sound systems, it is one of a rare group of albums that truly are required listening. So what happens when you take one of the most legendary recordings of all time and recreate it in the chiptunes style? Come inside and take a listen. You may just be surprised. Now I am a huge chiptunes fan, but when it comes to these kinds of recordings, they really have to be done right to be listenable beyond mere curiosity. Not only does MOON8 sound good, it transcends sounding like music done for a video game. Sure, the tones are undeniably old-school NES, but nothing has been done to tweak the music to sound like it actually came from a game. This is a chiptunes recreation in its purest sense. What I find truly stunning about MOON8 is just how much effort has gone into the recreation of nearly all of Pink Floyd’s instrumentation. This is obviously not something that was cranked out in a weekend to say “hey, look what I can do.” The music is a labor of love, for both the source material and style in which it has been recreated. I was skeptical before hearing them, and then completely blown away by, how well the explosion of clock chimes at the beginning of “Time” and the cash register opening of “Money ” were done. Both pieces precisely capture the spirit of the originals in the chiptune style. Frankly, it’s pretty mind blowing how good the whole album sounds. The pulsing analog synths of “On the Run” sound frighteningly close to the original and the bleep-creations of Clare Torry’s vocalizations in “The Great Gig in the Sky” are spot on. It makes me wish LA’s Laserium hadn’t recently shut down (again) because replacing their regular DSOTM laser-show with this music for one night would be beyond cool to see.

April Fools! The Best Hoaxes In Music History

From Paul McCartney’s ‘death’ to Nine Inch Nails’ Timbaland-produced album, these pranks had music fans fooled. By James Montgomery Paul McCartney Photo: David Montgomery/Getty Images If, by chance, you happen to read something Thursday (April 1) about Led Zeppelin reuniting or Jim Morrison coming out of hiding, don’t believe it. As you’re probably aware, it’s April Fools’ Day, and these kinds of things have a way of happening. Why, on this very day last year , Kid Rock announced he had acquired the naming rights to the Detroit Tigers’ stadium, and Coldplay declared they were recording their next album in zero gravity. Of course, none of it ended up being true, and both acts added their names to the ever-growing list of some of music’s greatest tricksters. It seems that bands have been at this kind of thing for decades now, so we figured that now was as good a time as any to shed light on some of music’s greatest hoaxes. From faked deaths to promised resurrections, alter egos to mysterious side projects, there was plenty to choose from. Musicians have as good a sense of humor as you or I. Here’s our list of the best hoaxes in music history: Paul Is Dead Perhaps the greatest rock hoax of all time started in September 1969, around the time the Beatles released their seminal Abbey Road album. That’s when one particularly gullible fan published an article in a college newspaper speculating that not only had Paul McCartney died in a grisly 1966 automobile crash, but that the Beatles were covering the accident up, even going as far as hiring a Macca look-alike (named Billy Shears) to take his place. The hoax only picked up speed from there, thanks in no small part to the Beatles themselves, who, though they never admitted to it, seemed to delight in keeping the “Paul Is Dead” myth alive, peppering songs and album artwork with opaque references to McCartney’s crash and placing mysterious “messages” deep in songs. Of course, those messages could only be heard when said songs were played backward, only lending credence to the belief that it was the copious amounts of drugs being consumed in the ’60s that kept the rumor mill grinding. The Masked Marauders Really, this is a two-part hoax. The whole thing began in 1969, when Rolling Stone editor Greil Marcus penned a review of a fictional double-bootleg album, supposedly recorded by Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, John Lennon and McCartney (who may or may not have been dead at the time). The goal of the piece was to poke fun at the recent trend of so-called “supergroups,” but the hoax began to take on a life of its own, and the magazine was inundated with so many letters that Marcus and reviewer Bruce Miroff decided to actually record the album, recruiting a Berkeley, California, skiffle band to play on it and tricking Warner Bros. into ponying up a $15,000 advance. The self-titled Marauders album — featuring covers and goofy originals like “Cow Pie” and “I Can’t Get No Nookie” — went on to sell more than 100,000 copies and ticked off just as many fans when the entire thing was revealed to be a giant joke. Klaatu In 1976, rumors began swirling that the Beatles had reunited and recorded a new album under the guise of “Klaatu” (the name of the protagonist in the 1951 sci-fi classic “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” Some rather overzealous journalists and disc jockeys were more than likely responsible for starting the whole thing, and Capitol Records — which released the album — didn’t exactly go out of their way to dispel the whispers either (since the album sold an additional 20,000 copies in a matter of weeks). In actuality, Klaatu were a prog-rock act from Canada who recorded until 1981 then reunited in 2005. Lexicon of Grunge: Breaking the Code The title of a sidebar in a 1992 New York Times article about the Seattle grunge scene, which claimed to offer the reader a guide to slang terms being used by rockers in the Pacific Northwest (“swingin’ on the flippity-flop,” “cob nobbler,” “lamestain,” etc.). In actuality, the list was a hoax, created by a Sub Pop sales representative named Megan Jasper, who, after being pestered by a Times reporter, made the jargon up on the spot. Oh, and hey, MTV News actually spoke to Jasper in 2008 , though it was about the 20th anniversary of Sub Pop and not the Grunge Lexicon — which probably explains why she didn’t call us lamestains. Tupac Shakur Is Still Alive Less of a hoax than an urban myth, rumors that Shakur — who was gunned down in Las Vegas in September 1996 — still walks among us have quieted in recent years, though there are still those out there who believe. Most point to the volumes of music his estate has churned out since his death and clues in ‘Pac’s lyrics that seem to suggest that he faked his death and is currently hiding right beneath our noses (perhaps even partying hard on Bourbon Street ). Oh, and then there’s Drake, who seems content to keep the rumors alive by dissing Tupac in song . Humpty Hump The epically schnozzed, ultra-libidinous alter ego of rapper Shock G, Hump ran roughshod over Digital Underground’s classic “The Humpty Dance” and basically eclipsed his creator’s entire existence. G didn’t seem to mind, though, playing up the angle that he and Humpty were actually two different people — he would often perform as himself, disappear, then re-emerge in Humpty’s trademark Groucho glasses. He even created a bio for the character, who fronted a fictional band called Smooth Eddie and the Humpers, was injured in a tragic deep-fryer accident and was forced to wear a fake nose to hide his scars. The guys in the Wu-Tang Clan have yet to show this level of commitment to their various aliases, btw. Jack and Meg White Are Brother and Sister While they were still kicking around in Detroit, White Stripes mastermind Jack White cooked up a backstory in which he and drummer Meg White were actually brother and sister. In reality, the two were actually ex-spouses, something that was revealed when the band broke and journalists uncovered their marriage certificate . White would eventually come clean about the hoax, saying that he created the sibling angle as a way to get fans to focus on the music. Nine Inch Nails’ Strobelight One of the most brilliant — and mean-spirited — hoaxes in recent years was perpetrated by Trent Reznor, who, on April Fools’ Day 2009, launched a site promoting Strobelight, an album he had supposedly recorded with Timbaland. The joke, of course, was that Timbaland had recently worked with former ( now current ) Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell on his Scream album — an effort Reznor had previously slammed on Twitter by writing, “You know that feeling you get when somebody embarrasses themselves so badly YOU feel uncomfortable? Heard Chris Cornell’s record? Jesus” — and this was Rez’s way of poking fun at the entire project. Of course, song titles like “Everybody’s Doing It” (featuring Chris Martin, Jay-Z and Bono) and “P—ygrinder” (featuring Sheryl Crow) were pretty funny too. Did we leave anything out? Let us know your favorite musical hoax in the comments below!

It’s a Justin Bieber World

My World, if you’re in Justin Bieber’s shoes, is not just the name of his album … or his second album, My World 2.0 . It’s what the teenage baller rules. Hard. The rest of us just live here. He should really charge rent. Sure, the dude could keep a lid on it sometimes, saying Miley Cyrus isn’t his type or that Mariah Carey is past her prime . But his sales back up his attitude. My World 2.0 topped the album charts this week, making Justin Bieber the youngest male solo artist ever to score a No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. HIS WORLD : Justin Bieber. Cannot. Be. Stopped. The prepubescent singer is also the youngest male solo artist to score two simultaneous albums in the top five (as My World rounds out this week’s list). With his forthcoming national tour dates and an upcoming April 10 appearance on Saturday Night Live , Bieber is inching closer to pop culture domination. Oh who are we kidding, he’s already dominated. Just be grateful you can even check out our gallery of Justin Bieber pictures and bow down to the king.

Usher Says Raymond V. Raymond Proves He Hasn’t Lost His Swagger

‘This one is it: Raymond V. Raymond !’ singer says. By Shaheem Reid Usher Photo: MTV News With more than 45 million albums sold, Usher has already established himself as one of the greats of contemporary music. But does the singer see himself as a legend? “I’m Usher, the one and only,” he laughed last week during a sitdown with MTV News in New York. “For me, I think [Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye] — they figured out what they were as they were going, by inspiration as well. Philanthropy is one thing all of them did in some way — rather, it was allowing their music to speak to where they were and what they had to say, from Michael to Stevie Wonder to Marvin. The one thing they all had is the ability to last forever. Two of them are now gone, Michael and Marvin, their music will last forever, and that’s something I hope to accomplish.” Usher’s catalog is certainly solid, with his 2004 Confessions LP considered by many to be his best (it’s sold more than 10 million copies just in the U.S.). The singer’s new LP, Raymond v. Raymond, was released today (March 30). “Part of the reason why I did this album so you can understand the full spectrum of who I am as an artist,” Usher said about the album. “My life has been kinda played out as a journey and going through different chapters, with the albums representing the chapters. It’s the sixth album for me. And when I look back to the people that I admire, I admire people who take you on a journey to where they have been, musically, places they have gone; the culture of that time that affected them, the cultural movement. All of that, they figured out a way to encompass it in the music they made. That’s what this album is.” “This album means so much to my career,” Usher told MTV.com recently . “I think this is the one time where I’m able to put it all in, emotionally and the good times — super-freaky and then also super-emotional. Raymond v. Raymond, artistically, is one of my greatest pieces of work, not only just because of the content but also the people whom I got involved in it: T.I., Will.I.Am, Puff, Nicki Minaj …” The album also features a collaboration with Ludacris — who collaborated on one of Usher’s biggest hits, 2004’s “Yeah!” — on “She Don’t Know.” And the video for the Will I. Am. collaboration, “OMG,” recently hit the Internet. The clip is all performance as Usher brings his dance moves to the forefront. “A lot of people may have felt like I lost my swagger,” Usher said. “Let me tell you something: I play long-balls, so now we back. This one is it: Raymond v. Raymond ! What do you think of Usher’s new album? Has he gotten his swagger back? Was it ever gone? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Usher

Answer to Weight Reduction Now Promises An Even Brighter Solution!

digitaljournal   Weight Loss is almost synonymous to an unwinnable battle. It is a basic knowledge that in order to reduce, one must eat less and exercise more, but in this day and age where your life is juggling job stress and family crises, the temptation of eating convenient fast and fatty foods encourages you to do the opposite. A healthy diet and regular exercise are certainly the best weapons against weight gain, but the fact is that sometimes they aren’t enough. And that’s where science may someday be able to help. In research laboratories around the country, researchers are studying closely at the biological mechanisms of obesity, finding the solution why some bodies store fat so readily, and why others are better at burning the calories they consume. They are discovering a surprising array of metabolic and physiologic factors that contribute to weight.  Your intestines are teeming with bacteria that can either promote or curb weight gain. The type of hyperactive fat that is called brown fat which is abundant in newborns — that actually burns a lot of calories, unlike the traditional white fat that adults commonly store in their midsection. These and other findings about the biology of weight gain could be the answer to slimming our collective waistline, if scientists can someday use them to create better treatments for obesity. And we could use the help: in the decade between 1991 and 2000, the prevalence of overweight adults in the U.S. increased by 61%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last year, 30% of children in 30 states tipped the scales as either overweight or obese. “With hundreds of millions of obese people that we’ve got in our country now, physicians can’t treat them all,” says Dr. Michael Jensen, professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. “We just don’t have enough physicians.” If the latest findings from obesity labs — in both humans and animals — prove as practical as they are promising, they could someday make the job of fighting obesity easier for physicians and patients, and help all of us get an extra boost from our diet and exercise programs.
