‘It was important to collaborate with people that share the same passion in music that I have,’ EDM veteran tells MTV News. By Akshay Bhansali Paul Van Dyk Photo: Ilya S. Savenok/ Getty Images MTV News took great pride in heading down to Florida for Miami Music Week , the annual dance-music get-together. We particularly cherished the opportunity to catch up with Paul Van Dyk, fresh off a smashing set at Ice Palace; the highly decorated Grammy-winning German electronic-music producer is among EDM’s first true legends. “Stuff like ‘Home,’ ‘Time of Our Lives,’ also ‘For an Angel’ — people always request me to play them,” Van Dyk said of his past catalog of hits played for fans. “But I’m really excited because people already knew the new stuff from the album. They went really wild, so that was good!” The album Van Dyk speaks of is the veteran producer’s latest studio effort, his sixth, titled Evolution. It is not only a reflection of the renaissance he seeks to deliver with every new project, but also a sign of the times we live in today. “Look at electronic music,” Van Dyk said. “[It’s gone] from a small subculture 20 years ago to the biggest music culture in the world these days. Also, the way we communicate these days with each other: We didn’t have Facebook five years ago. “Or the way we actually listen to music: iPads, iPhone,” he continued. “How we buy it: iTunes and all that. We didn’t have that 10 years ago. So there’s a massive evolution in how we live together, how we basically enjoy each other. And this is what I tried to bring across with the album, in a way.” Van Dyk is quick to point out that Evolution is not a concept album, with tracks directly connected, but rather that the underlying cohesion comes from a main source of inspiration. “My inspiration is life in general: everything I see, everything I experience,” he said. “So when I go to the studio, every single track is based on that work ethic. And in terms of working on the album, for me it was very important to collaborate with people that share the same passion in music that I have.” Indeed, the project features a fine group of collaborators: The exceptional Austin Leeds appears on album opener “Symmetries” and “Verano.” One of the stand-out collabs comes from ‘s Adam Young on “Eternity,” born of their meeting three years ago. “It was long before ‘Fireflies,’ ” Van Dyk explained. “So there was this guy that was insanely creative. And we just decided, ‘Yeah, let’s do some music together.’ A few weeks later ‘Fireflies’ blew up. And I was like, ‘Holy crap! That’s Adam!’ ” Versatile EDM rising star Arty , championed early in his career by Van Dyk, is featured twice on the project, the second time in a compelling, untraditional way. “There’s a song on the album called ‘The Sun After Heartbreak,’ ” Van Dyk said of a track that also features vocals from Sue McLaren. “[It] is a pure example of what I always say: It’s not about ‘This is dubstep. This is house. This is electro. This is trance.’ It’s about electronic music, because otherwise how would you explain two people coming from the trancey world of things doing a track that is clearly influenced and driven by drum and bass? It’s purely because the creative process was leading us that way.” Related Artists Paul Van Dyk Adam Young Austin Leeds
Black Sabbath, Kiss and the Sex Pistols have also blasted the institution. By Gil Kaufman Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose Photo: Getty Images Suffice it to say that in his lengthy, lawyerly letter to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week refusing his induction as part of the classic line-up of Guns N’ Roses , singer Axl Rose had a bone (or two, or six or 20) to pick with the process. It’s hard to say who the enigmatic hard-rock icon was most mad at, but his steadfast refusal to attend the induction, or even acknowledge the honor, put him in a long tradition of rock legends who’ve either bashed the RRHOF for not including them (only to change their tune once their number came up) or refused to show up , not to mention the fans who’ve raised holy hell when their favorite bands couldn’t make the cut. MTV News’ James Montgomery penned his own open letter to Axl and the group’s fans. Among the other hell-raisers: Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath : Before the group got the call in 2005 , the Blizzard of Ozz had been very vocal about how little he wanted to do with the Hall. In a 1999 letter to the Hall of Fame, Ozzy famously told the institution, “Just take our name off the list. Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it’s not voted on by the fans. It’s voted on by the supposed elite for the industry and the media, who’ve never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is irrelevant to me.” He added, “Let’s face it, Black Sabbath has never been media darlings. We’re a people’s band and that suits us just fine.” John Lydon/Sex Pistols : Lydon (aka “Johnny Rotten”) was his typical snotty self when his pioneering punk band made the short list in 2006. In a cheeky letter, the perennially put out Lydon wrote, “Next to the Sex Pistols rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain. Your museum. Urine in wine. We’re not coming. We’re not your monkey and so what?” Needless to say, the band did not show up for the ceremony. Gene Simmons/Kiss : The kabuki theater bass player is never at a loss for words. And nothing makes him angrier than the fact that the “greatest band in the world” has never been invited to the party. He’s lashed out at the Rock Hall repeatedly in the 12 years since his group became eligible. “There are disco bands, rap bands, Yiddish folk song bands, but not Kiss,” he said in 2008. David Lee Roth/Eddie Van Halen/Van Halen : The longest-running soap opera in rock was kicked up a notch in 2007 when VH was slated for induction. Original singer Roth had been rehearsing for the event and speculation swirled for months about who would show up and if replacement singer Sammy Hagar would be on hand as well. Then, in classic VH fashion, Eddie and Dave both bailed and it was left to Hagar and now-former bassist Michael Anthony to accept on the band’s behalf. And then there are the fans. In addition to the unending volley of complaints from the Kiss Army, followers of Canadian prog rockers Rush have been bellyaching for the past decade of the band’s eligibility that the wizardly trio deserve their spot in the Hall. They’ve picketed, launched petitions and all but drawn their broadswords and threatened to storm the I.M. Pei-designed glass pyramid in Cleveland to rectify this grave injustice. All to no avail. But the pop-heavy LP is ‘a lot better than how we planned,’ Nicki’s pal-turned-co-executive producer Safaree ‘SB’ Samuels tells MTV News. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy, with reporting by Rob Markman Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded Photo: Universal Nicki Minaj ‘s right-hand man Safaree “SB” Samuels took on another role for his longtime friend when he signed on as a co-executive producer on her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. When MTV News caught up with SB, he explained how he made sure everything from “A to Z was done.” Samuels said his tasks on the project included scouting for beats and keeping in touch with producers to make sure deadlines were met. When asked how he helped Nicki to strike a balance between hip-hop and pop, SB revealed that the album was initially skewed toward rap. “In the beginning, we was gonna make it some rap spittin’ sh– and it was going to have a couple of songs that were going to be the ‘Super Bass’-es and joints like that,” he revealed. “But it ended up working out a lot better than how we planned.” SB went on to gush about working with Hit Boy, whose production highlights include Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “N—as in Paris.” After hearing just one beat, both Nicki and SB thought “We need more!” Hit Boy sent around six great beats, and they decided on two for the songs “Come on a Cone” and “I Am Your Leader,” which features Cam’ron and Rick Ross. (Incidentally, those are both SB’s favorites on the album.) But on the topic of crossover appeal and whether Nicki has deserted her rap roots , SB couldn’t disagree more. “She’s still doing her rap sh–, she’s still doing her crossover sh–,” he said. “When you a star, you a star. You can’t deny it.” Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded debuted at #1 this week, selling 253,000 copies in its first week on the Billboard albums chart. Nicki’s debut, Pink Friday, debuted at #2 in December 2010 on sales of 375,000. Do you think Nicki has gone too pop? Sound off in the comments below! Of his rap alter ego Shawty Mane, who appears on ‘Boyfriend,’ Bieber tells MTV News, ‘It’s something that I love to do.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News When Justin Bieber dropped “Boyfriend,” he definitely channeled his rapper alter ego Shawty Mane on the verses, spewing lyrics like, “If I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go/ I can take you places you ain’t never been before/ Baby take a chance or you’ll never ever know/ I got money in my hands that I’d really like to blow/ Swag swag swag, on you.” The song now has many fans wondering whether more rapping will appear on his upcoming album, Believe . When MTV News caught up with the teen star on the set of his “Boyfriend” video , he shared just how much rapping will make the final cut. “There’s not a lot of rapping on the album,” he said. “As people know, I’m a singer, and I don’t want to get people confused with that, but it’s something that I love to do, so you guys will definitely hear more of it.” Fans will also hear more rapping from Bieber’s pal Drake , who recently opened up about working with his friend on the release. “It sounds like everything you’d imagine a great Justin Bieber and Drake song would sound like,” the Take Care MC teased in an interview with Capital FM . Describing the process of making the track, he said he went about creating the song in a way he hadn’t done in the past. “We meet on the ground of melody. He’s always like, ‘Yo, your melodies are so crazy,’ and ‘Give me the craziest melody.’ So, we sat there for a night, and it was actually a great studio process,” Drake explained. “What we would do is he would go in the booth for 10 minutes, and he would hum melodies, and then he would walk out, and then I’d be like, ‘I like this one,’ and then I’d go in, and we started coaching each other and amping each other up.” Bieber also got a studio visit from Lil Wayne , but there’s been no word on whether the pair worked on any tracks for the album, dropping later this year. For anyone wondering if Bieber truly does have the swag to pull of those kinds of collaborations, “Boyfriend” writer/producer Mike Posner , who describes the song as “super hip-hop,” assures critics that Bieber has what it takes. “I think we’ve all known Justin since he was 13, and that’s not the kid I was in the studio with anymore,” Posner said. “He’s an 18-year-old. He skateboards with Lil Wayne and hangs out with Lil Twist. Those are his homeys. And he listens to hip-hop, and he’s a really cool kid. He’s not a corny guy.” Would you like to hear more rapping from Justin on Believe ? Tell us in the comments below! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Justin Bieber
This week, we had some real Hip Hop talk with “The King Of Memphis”, DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia. We chopped it up about some of his early influences when he was coming up as a DJ way before the group’s success. “Bass music was the sound in the South. The few local rappers we had in Memphis were not commercially known so the majority of our record collections were from East Coast & West Coast artists.” One of the groups he mentioned was the Jungle Brothers. The 1989 “Done By The Forces Of Nature” album was one of Paul’s favorites. This album was the follow up to their 1988 classic “Straight Out The Jungle.” Real hip hop heads will agree with DJ Paul on this one. “J. Beez Comin Through” was one of the singles off this album. Some Barbz and Kenz have praised the album, but others are disappointed. By Kara Klenk Nicki Minaj Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, the sophomore effort from one of MTV’s Hottest MCs, Nicki Minaj , dropped Tuesday (April 3), leaving critics and fans divided. Critics have almost unanimously panned it , but all maintain that Minaj is an enormous talent whose album shifted focus away from her clear strength, rapping, to make way for more generic pop and dance tunes. The Barbz and Kenz make up one of the most fiercely loyal fanbases around, so Minaj isn’t losing love from them. Still, many are torn about the album. Some have proclaimed their love for the album, calling it “beyond great” and “fabulous.” @Craggleprice tweeted, “The album is amazing!! it’s got Rap, Pop, Dance and Ballads! best album! Drake and Lil Wayne Collabs r amazing! it all is!” Standout tracks among fans seem to be “Beautiful Sinner,” “Va Va Voom,” “Come on a Cone” and “Beez in the Trap.” Others stand by Minaj as an artist but are not into her latest work. @Rudy_Nelson wrote, “It’s horrible! and I’m a fan!” Minaj is also being compared to her pop contemporaries: As @Crucial416 commented, “It’s a great Rihanna album. Terrible nicki album.” What do YOU think of Roman Reloaded? Tell us on Facebook! While critics also expressed disappointment that Minaj split the album down the middle with rap on one side and dance/pop on the other, one MTV.com reader came to her defense. Zachary wrote, “Critics need to stop riding her and give up on trying to ‘box [Nicki] in’ (as she said in ‘Fly’) as JUST a female rapper. She’s expanded into being so much more. Nearly every track on her debut featured her singing and also featured heavy synth productions. ‘Blazin’ anyone? ‘Last Chance’? ‘Dear Old Nicki’? ‘Save Me’? SHE’S BEEN SINGING SINCE THE BEGINNING!!! Her bubblegum Barbie side is what made her famous on ‘Super Bass,’ which combined both strong rap and vocals; why are they telling lies?” Some fans seem to want Minaj to go back even further than her smash hit “Pink Friday.” @SistahSar_casm tweeted, “Not feeling it either smh. … I miss mixtape Nicki.” While @GagaIsMyJudas suggested critics give it some time — writing, “It’s awesome, if they listened to it more they’d love it. I didn’t like it at first but it grew on me” — it seems most of Minaj’s fans don’t heed them. @MsSmartBarbie tweeted, “Frankly I could care less what they think. This was for the fans not for the critics.” Related Videos The Evolution Of Nicki Minaj Related Photos Nicki Minaj’s Red-Carpet Looks Related Artists Nicki Minaj
David Lynch has debuted the video for the title track of his album Crazy Clown Time , a thoroughly sick, depraved, tuneless, NSFW, barely watchable/listenable seven-minute romp through the filmmaker-cum-songwriter’s mental miasma. It’s the most literal-minded music video I’ve ever seen, which, with lines about pouring beer on people and lighting one’s hair aflame and running around the backyard, makes for some arresting imagery. As in, I almost can’t believe Lynch made this without getting arrested. Anyway. It’s no ” Firecracker ,” but what is? [via The Playlist ]
