Michelle Delamor ‘Questioned’ Singing Creed On ‘American Idol’

‘I feel that I still did give my own style to it, but I maybe should have chosen a different song,’ she says. By Katie Byrne Michelle Delamor Photo: Fox While she didn’t get a lot of screen time before the semifinals, Michelle Delamor established herself as season nine’s resident diva with her first live “American Idol” performance of Alicia Keys’ “Fallin’.” Unfortunately, she made an oddball song choice (an R&B version of Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open”?) that sent her packing Thursday, along with Jermaine Sellers, John Park and Haeley Vaughn. Does she think lack of screen time did her in? We caught up with the 22-year-old from Miami on Friday (March 5) to talk about that and much more. Q : On Wednesday, Kara said “With Arms Wide Open” was your best performance yet. Then during the results show, she took that comment back. Was that difficult? A : You know what? It was a little bit disappointing, but knowing myself, I’m really a perfectionist, and I know that I didn’t do my best. I know that Wednesday was not close to my best performance. I understood where she was coming from. I was a bit disappointed that she had those things to say, but I couldn’t say that she was wrong for it. Q : What was your thought process behind choosing the Creed song? A : After my first performance, I had done Alicia Keys, and the judges all thought I needed to take a risk and try something they wouldn’t expect me to do, so that’s why I chose to do Creed, because I knew they wouldn’t expect that. It’s kind of like a rock ballad, and I’m not a rock singer. I thought I was taking a risk, and I tried too much to go by what the judges said. I wanted to make sure I did the right thing, and I was too caught up in my mind. I feel that I still did give my own style to it, but I maybe should have chosen a different song. Q : At any point, did you question your decision to go with the Creed song? A : I did. I really did question it. As a matter of fact, I think part of what messed me up a little bit is that I questioned it before I got up on that stage. When you’re not sure of the song that you’re performing, it’s gonna be noticed and people can feel that. I definitely would have done my next song. I would have reversed [the order]. Q : What were you planning to sing next? A : I wanted to do “Come Together” by the Beatles, but Michael Jackson style. I feel like it has so much drive, so much intensity. It’s a song that I feel. I love it. My idol, my inspiration Michael Jackson, he covered it. And he did an amazing job, and I’ve just always loved that song. Q : Do you think your lack of screen time in the early rounds led to your exit? A : Actually, in the very beginning, they had made a whole commercial that said “Meet Michelle,” and I thought that was amazing. I was like, “Oh my God, I can’t believe it!” And then I saw that they didn’t really show me much, but I figured, “They know what they’re doing.” I knew that I didn’t really have a story. I kind of have a normal lifestyle back at home, not so much tragedy or anything like that. I don’t think that makes for good TV. [ Laughs. ] So I understood. Were you sad to see Michelle go? Do you think her Creed song choice got her voted off? Let us know below! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Jack Johnson Reveals To The Sea Album Details

‘We try to get it live as much as we can,’ Johnson tells MTV News of his recording process. By James Montgomery Jack Johnson Photo: MTV News Jack Johnson ‘s last album, 2008’s Sleep Through the Static, bested the likes of Alicia Keys and Sheryl Crow to debut at #1 on the Billboard albums chart . He then surprised pretty much everyone by staying there for a second week, selling more copies than Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black (which had just won Record and Song of the Year at the Grammys) and Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Mitchell Sessions, which had just won Album of the Year. Oh, and then stayed at #1 again the following week too. The point is, eventually, people are going to have to stop being surprised by Johnson’s success. He is, after all, one of the most popular singer/songwriters on the planet (perhaps the most), capable of selling millions of albums, selling out stadiums around the world and staging an annual concert — the Kokua Festival — on his home island of Hawaii. Perhaps the surprise comes from the fact that Johnson is arguably the most down-to-earth musician in the business, shunning the spotlight and donating 100 percent of the proceeds from his tours to charities. Calling him a celebrity just doesn’t seem right. Still, there’s a pretty good chance that later this summer, you will begin reading the same stories about Johnson’s unlikely success, because that’s when he’ll release his new album, a deeply personal collection of songs that’s almost certain to top the Billboard charts yet again (and stay there for an extended period of time). “The album is called To the Sea. I guess it’s a reference to a father leading his son to the sea, with the water representing the subconscious. So it’s about trying to go beneath the surface and understand yourself,” Johnson told MTV News on Tuesday. “I have three kids … so the album is about that. It’s both me as a son of my own father and me looking down at my kids. I’m 34, right at this transition of still feeling like a child sometimes, but other times feeling like a father, and finding the father in myself. It’s all about those things.” Recorded in just three weeks in Johnson’s Mango Tree Studios, Sea is meant to capture the man and his band as they’re supposed to be heard: live and loose. It was mainly committed to tape in one room, with minimal use of overdubs, and an increased focus on letting the instruments bleed into one another. It is very much the sound of a band setting up in a room and just playing. “We don’t need much time. Just four guys in the band, we try to get it live as much as we can, keep as much of it with the bleeds in it,” Johnson smiled. “Three weeks is about as long as we could spend, because we tend to start overthinking things if we go longer than that. We’re a pretty small band, with pretty simple songs.” Sea is scheduled to hit stores June 1, and the first single from the record — a tune called “You and Your Heart” — will debut on radio next month. “[That song] started off with this guitar riff that I had around for a while, actually had it on the last record, and we liked it, but we didn’t have any words for it yet, nothing came natural, so I didn’t use it,” Johnson said. “And at some point, some of the books I was reading started leading me in a certain direction, kind of like this broken king character. That area you get in sometimes, where you stop trusting your heart and you start thinking too much about logic and this and that. So it’s basically about that separation that can happen between the self and the heart and trying to trust your heart again.” Other standouts include the title track (which Johnson said was written “in, like, 10 or 15 minutes”) and “At or With Me,” a buzzing, punching number recorded “in one take, one time.” And while the whole idea of working fast and loose isn’t exactly a new one, Johnson’s reason for doing so might be. After all, he was making it in Oahu. “You know, the studio doesn’t have any windows in it, and it’s kind of this closed-off space,” he said. “We went in there to work. But it’s also the kind of place you want to spend as little time as possible in. You wanna go outside. Or, at least, I did.” Related Artists Jack Johnson

Sade Holds #1 Billboard Spot In Week Two

Rihanna’s ‘Rude Boy’ boosts Rated R in slow sales week. By Gil Kaufman Sade’s Soldier of Love Photo: Epic Sade ‘s fans have clearly missed her. Soldier of Love, her first album since 2000, hangs onto the #1 spot for a second week on the Billboard 200 charts. That’s despite a drop to 190,000 copies sold, 62 percent less than its debut week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Even with that drop-off, Sade was able to hold off former #1 Lady Antebellum , whose Need You Now slipped 31 percent in week four to 144,000, pushing the country group over the 1 million mark in just one month. The rest of the top 10 are the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (#3, 65,000), Lady Gaga ‘s Fame (#4, 63,000), Lil Wayne ‘s Rebirth (#5, 58,000), Susan Boyle ‘s I Dreamed a Dream (#6, 51,000), Alicia Keys ‘ The Element of Freedom (#7, 39,000), Jaheim ‘s Another Round (#8, 36,000), Josh Turner ‘s Haywire (#9, 33,000) and Taylor Swift ‘s Fearless (#10, 32,000). Rihanna ‘s latest single, “Rude Boy,” appears to have boosted her prospects, as Rated R jumps 17 slots to #18 on sales of 25,000, and its total sales nearly reach 664,000. Meanwhile, former boyfriend Chris Brown ‘s Graffiti continues to struggle, stalling out at #117 on sales of just over 5,000, with less than 300,000 in sales to date. The only debut in the top 40 came from Winter Olympics opening ceremony crooner k.d. lang , whose compilation Recollection bows at #36 on sales of 15,000. Nick Jonas & the Administration ‘s Who I Am continues its freefall, dropping more than 20 spots to #51, as sales were halved to 12,000. That’s not as steep as the cliff that the Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Live in Las Vegas album drove off of, plummeting 49 spots in week two to #66 (9,000), as 75 percent of sales dried up. Things aren’t likely to pick up much next week: The only major chart debuts will be from late country icon Johnny Cash and punkers Alkaline Trio . Related Artists Sade Lady Antebellum

Alicia Keys Explains Why Love Is Theme Of The Element of Freedom

‘It’s the one thing we can all understand,’ singer told Gotham magazine. By Hillary Crosley Alicia Keys on the cover of the March issue of Gotham magazine Photo: Niche Media LLC In addition to announcing her North American tour dates on Friday, Alicia Keys recently posed for the cover of Gotham magazine’s spring issue, which hits stands March 1. Keys donned two looks in the photo shoot, one a green drop-neck gown accented with a gold collar necklace, the other a light blue one-shoulder dress complimented with a head wrap. The New York native talked with the publication about the changes in her old neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, as well as love as the theme for her new album, The Element of Freedom. “When I was growing up, [Hell’s Kitchen] was way darker, more dismal and more like the place where all the outcasts lived,” recalls Keys. “So now, to see it more like a tourist destination is really interesting. Even though Eighth Avenue was supergrungy with drug needles, Broadway always had those bright lights and it did always have endless possibilities.” As compared with the subject matter of her previous three albums, Songs in A Minor, The Diary of Alicia Keys and As I Am, Element focuses quite a bit on love, relationships and sustaining courtship’s spark against all odds. “Love does play a prominent role in the album because I believe love is the most important thing in the world,” Keys said. “It’s the one thing we can all understand.” Keys recently filmed a clip for her duet with fellow R&B powerhouse Beyonc

‘American Idol’ Reveals Final Top 24 Contestants

Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens, Janell Wheeler, John Park and other early front-runners make the cut. By Katie Byrne Janell Wheeler on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox In an “American Idol” first, seven contenders for the season-nine top 24 were revealed during Tuesday’s how. On Wednesday (February 17), the 17 remaining semifinalists were unveiled. Now, you can reacquaint yourself with those singers before next week’s live shows kick off: Andrew Garcia While Garcia’s story about his parents’ gangbanger past and trying to make a better life for his kid earned him some audition-round screen time, his Hollywood Week performances are what set him apart from the pack. His acoustic reworkings of female-fronted songs — Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” and Adele’s “Chasing Pavements” — earned him a ride to the top 24. Katie Stevens The precocious 16-year-old caught our attention with her old-soul vocal chops and compelling backstory. She backed up the positive first impression with Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life” and her group performance of Alicia Keys’ “No One.” Her age begs the question: Will she be the next Jordin Sparks and go all the way or Lisa Tucker and flame out? Janell Wheeler Wheeler’s Hollywood Week was filled with ups and downs, between nailing her acoustic take on Estelle’s “American Boy” and choosing the “wrong song” (according to Simon) with Taylor Swift’s “Love Story.” But the judges must have kept her silky-smooth “House of the Rising Sun” audition into account, keeping her around for the semifinals. John Park Guest judge Shania Twain praised Park’s “bottom end” during his audition performance of Gary Moore’s “I’ll Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know.” The 20-year-old college student was able to show off all the other facets of his voice during Hollywood Week, earning a coveted spot in the top 24.
