Exclusive: Lil Mama Apologizes For Crashing Jay-Z’s VMA Performance

By Shaheem Reid Lil Mama, Jay-Z, and Alicia Keys at the 2009 VMAs Photo: MTV News If it wasn’t for a guy named Kanye West, Lil Mama might have dominated Monday’s headlines with her, er, zealousness at Sunday night’s Video Music Awards. The New York-bred rapper/ TV personality got hyped up and jumped onstage with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys during their show-closing performance of the night, Jay’s “Empire State of Mind.” Mama came onstage toward the end of the song and even struck a pose with Hov and Alicia Keys, after Jay had gestured for her to chill out seconds earlier and joked she was “T-Paining.” On Monday afternoon (September 14), Mama sent MTV News a statement via her manager explaining the incident.

Jay-Z VMA Performance Crashed By Lil Mama

Leave it to Lil Mama, whoever that is, to try to close out the already-strange 2009 MTV Video Music Awards with one of the oddest moments of the night. While it wasn’t as ridiculous or rude as Kanye West’s hijacking of Taylor Swift’s speech, the spectacle of Lil Mama climbing up on stage for no reason during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ VMA performance last night was still hilariously weird. For nearly five minutes, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys were performing “Empire State of Mind,” a number that was to close the always-memorable MTV award show.
