Move Over Priest: Celebrity Preacher Eddie Long Faces Third Sex Abuse Claim

I spoke, personally, to a friend here in Atlanta that used to attend New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and grew up with Eddie Long in Baltimore, Maryland. He told that the inner circle of Long's entourage has always known about his passion and desire for young boys. One of the accusers was involved in a break in at the church last year. One of the things stolen was the Bishop's Iphone. The young man knew that the phone was the smoking gun because of the incriminating numbers and messages it carried. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, with it's 30,000 members, has the largest African American congregation in the southeast region of the United States. I'm just not surprised. Don't ask me why, I'm just not. ___________________________________________________________ (Sept. 22) — A third lawsuit has been filed accusing Bishop Eddie Long of coercing young men in his Atlanta megachurch into having sex in exchange for cash and cars. The suit was filed today in DeKalb County Superior Court, in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Earlier today, a spokesman for the pastor said the two other young men who have filed lawsuits against Long are out to stake their claim on his fortune and called the allegations baseless. The allegations against the leader of a 25,000-plus-member church are particularly explosive because of Long's outspoken views on homosexuality. The Southern Poverty Law Center calls the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church leader “one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement” and noted that he has referred to homosexuality and lesbianism as “spiritual abortions.” In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in DeKalb County, Ga., the two men accuse Long of exploiting his influence to coerce the then-teenagers into sexual relationships with him for years. Johnny Nunez, Wire Image Two men have filed a lawsuit alleging Bishop Eddie Long, here in 2007, coerced them into sexual relationships when they were teenagers. The lawsuit says Long, 57, has a long pattern of “singling out a select group of young male church members” and using his influence to engage in “sexual acts and relationships for his own personal sexual gratification.” The suit says the pastor — leader of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in the Atlanta suburb of Lithonia — referred to the teenagers as “spiritual sons” and instructed them to follow their “master.” In exchange, they claim, Long introduced them to celebrities like film director Tyler Perry, according to The New York Times. Art Franklin told CNN the claims are nothing more than “a case of retaliation and a shakedown for money by men with some serious credibility issues” and are “definitely without merit.” Franklin noted that one of the accusers was arrested earlier this year and charged with breaking into the church's offices and stealing an iPad and an iPhone. The attorney for the men, Brenda Joy Bernstein, says the June 23 break-in was committed out of anger, when one of the plaintiffs discovered that Long had similar relationships with other young men in the congregation. “He lashed out,” Bernstein told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But if it weren't for that act, we wouldn't know about this. He talked to his friends and learned Long had other 'spiritual sons.'” But not all of the church's members see it that way. Samuel Midgette, 40, said he doesn't believe the allegations, in part because of often Long speaks about his wife in glowing terms. “A man who talks about his wife as much as he do…I can't see it. Unless I'm blind,” Midgette told AOL News today in a phone interview. He said the men making the claims are likely after Long's money. “People don't believe this,” he said. “I think this is all about money.” The lawsuit charges that the abuse began when one of the men was 16. According to the suit, Long put the teenager on the church's payroll, bought him a Chevy Malibu and took him on trips to Turks and Caicos, New York and New Zealand. In New Zealand, Long “regularly engaged in sexual touching and sexual acts” with the teenager, the lawsuit says. Long “categorically denies the allegations,” his attorney, Craig Gillen, told The Associated Press. “We find it unfortunate that these two young men would take this course of action.” Gillen did not immediately return a call to AOL News. Bernstein says church officials knew about the abuse and failed to stop it. “They would do everything to protect the most powerful church in the Southeast,” she told the Times. Long's church hosts a program titled “Out of the Wilderness” that claims to help cure its participants of homosexuality. In 2006, when the family of Martin Luther King Jr. chose New Birth Missionary Baptist Church as the location for Coretta Scott King's funeral, civil rights leader Julian Bond refused to attend. Bond said King's widow supported gay rights and never would have wanted to be in the presence of Long. “I knew her attitude toward gay and lesbian rights. And I just couldn't imagine that she'd want to be in that church with a minister who was a raving homophobe,” Bond told told AOL's Black Voices in 2006. “And I couldn't see myself in my church either.” added by: keithponder

Iran Paying Taliban for Dead US Soldiers

At least five Iranian companies stationed in Afghanistan are covertly funding Taliban militants, paying them salaries of $233 a month with a $1,000 bonus for killing an American soldier, according to the Sunday Times of London. Blowing up a US military vehicle is worth $6,000, making insurgents better paid than any Afghan police officer or soldier. “Iran will never stop funding us, because Americans are dangerous for them as well,” said a Taliban treasurer, who travels from the mountainous Wardak province to an Iranian construction company that operates out of Kabul to pick up the cash. “The money we get is not dirty. It is for jihad,” he said. The treasurer said he has picked up almost $79,000 in the past six months. Afghan intelligence and Taliban sources told the Times that the firms — set up with foreign aid money within the past six months — provide cash for a network of district Taliban treasurers to pay battlefield expenses and bonuses for killing the enemy and destroying their vehicles. The Iranian companies win contracts to supply materials and logistics to Afghans involved in reconstruction. The money often comes in the form of aid from foreign donors. Profits are transferred through poorly regulated Afghan banks — including Kabul Bank, which is partly owned by President Hamid Karzai's brother Mahmood — to Tehran and Dubai. From there, the money returns to Afghanistan through the informal Islamic banking system known as hawala. “This means the companies involved in funding the insurgency can cover their tracks easily. It makes it harder for us to trace the cash flow,” a senior Afghan intelligence official said. He said the Iranian companies had been formed with the intention of winning contracts funded by foreign aid so that donors' cash could be channeled into the insurgency. The Iranian embassy in Kabul refused to respond to the allegations. Blogger Unearths Interesting Info on ‘Teacher’ That Criticized Palin As ‘Worst Governor Ever’

While filming a segment for her new TLC program in Homer, Alaska, former governor Sarah Palin was recently accosted by one Kathleen Gustafson, a local bearing a large handwritten banner reading “Worst Governor Ever.” Several news agencies and networks have picked up on the story , uncritically relaying that Gustafson is simply a local teacher. But that’s not accurate, as MacRanger of the Mac’s Mind blog discovered.  Gustafson is listed as a “theater tech” at Homer High School. In addition to those duties, she’s on staff at the Homer public radio station and on the board of directors for a family planning clinic in town . From her bio: Kathleen Gustafson :  I’ve been on the board since 2003.  I feel like volunteering with KBFPC is the natural compliment to my work in Youth Theater and public radio.  When I worked at Smoky Bay Learning Center, I witnessed directly the good work that Family Planning does in health education programs and I want to do what I can to be a part of it. Far from an apolitical teacher who just happens to be set off by Palin resigning mid-term, there’s arguably more than meets the eye when it comes to Gustafson’s politics.  Is it that hard for anyone in the mainstream media to apply a little skepticism and work a few keystrokes on Google? New Black Panther Leader: Fox ‘Jews’ Stoking Voter Intimidation Anger

New Black Panther Party leader Samir Shabazz on Monday made an anti-Semitic remark while blaming the Fox News Channel for fanning the fires of discontent over his involvement in voter intimidation back in November 2008. As NewsBusters reported on Election Day that year, two Black Panthers were situated outside a polling station in Philadelphia (video right). This eventually led to complaints by the Bush administration which the Justice Department recently dropped fueling accusations that the charges were dismissed for racial reasons. With this in mind, the Associated Press reported the following Monday (h/t Rusty Weiss): New Black Panther Party leader King Samir Shabazz made the derogatory reference to Fox News during a news conference in Harlem. It was held in response to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and Texas Republican Rep. Lamar Smith, who recently called for hearings into the Justice Department’s handling of the matter. Samir said the allegations of voter intimidation were false and that he had been caricatured by conservative news organizations, including Fox. “You call me a white hating bigot? Let me tell you who King Samir really is,” he said, describing himself an activist and hip hop artist who spends most of his time caring for his children. “That’s what you don’t hear from Fox Jews, I mean Fox News,” he said. For more racist rantings by Shabazz, watch this: Any questions?

Ariz. Sheriff Threatened with Justice Dept. Suit – CBS News

The Justice Department on Tuesday notified an Arizona sheriff's office known for its efforts against illegal immigrants that it has refused to cooperate with a civil rights investigation, is not in compliance with federal law and the department is threatening to sue. Since March 2009, the U.S. Justice Department has been investigating Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office in Phoenix for alleged discrimination and for unconstitutional searches and seizures. Arpaio says the inquiry is focused on his immigration efforts. Robert Driscoll, a Washington lawyer representing Arpaio, said Justice Department lawyers “have picked the man and the department and are trying to find a violation, rather than find a violation and then seeking to vindicate someone's rights.” “They have been investigating for two years,” said Driscoll, who added that most people assume it has something with racial profiling. But Driscoll said, “If it was going on now, presumably they would have evidence of this now.” In a letter, assistant attorney general Thomas Perez, head of the Justice Department's civil rights division, said the sheriff's office is not turning over material that Perez's lawyers are requesting. Over a year ago, Arpaio's lawyers asked that the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility investigate alleged attorney misconduct regarding the investigation. In his letter to Arpaio's lawyers, Perez said such “unfounded allegations” are not a basis for refusing to cooperate with the Justice Department probe. In June, the office concluded that no civil rights division attorney at the Justice Department committed professional misconduct or exercised poor judgment in the probe of Arpaio's office. Perez gave the sheriff's office until Aug. 17 to turn over documents first requested last year in what the department calls an inquiry into claims of discrimination based on national origin. Arpaio and his legal counsel said a year ago that the sheriff's office would not cooperate with the inquiry. The office “has continued its unwarranted refusal to cooperate,” Perez wrote. In June, the office supplied a position statement regarding the operation of its jail facilities. The statement says “nothing at all about the allegations of discriminatory police practices,” and includes no agreement to provide access to sheriff's office facilities and personnel, Perez said in the letter to the sheriff department's legal counsel. The letter also said a limited production of accompanying documents fails to respond to the first request for material made 17 months ago. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in federally assisted programs on the basis of race or national origin. Perez pointed out that the sheriff's office signed contractual assurances under Title VI agreeing to allow examination of relevant records by the Justice Department. The Title VI implementing regulations require that every application for federal financial assistance be accompanied by an assurance that the program will be conducted in accordance with all requirements. added by: toyotabedzrock

On civil liberties, Obama is worse than Bush

Last week it was reported that the Obama Administration wants to give the FBI power to force internet companies to reveal information about their users' internet activities: things like who they send email to, times and dates of emails, and maybe also information about their web browser activity. Even worse, they want the FBI to be able to demand this information without a warrant! President Obama is racking up an atrocious record on civil liberties and the Fourth Amendment. When he campaigned, he talked a lot about civil liberties. But when he got elected, he made an about-face and started expanding the abusive policies of the Bush Administration. For example, his Justice Department claimed that “state secrets” doctrine started by Bush gave the government even more secrecy powers than Bush had claimed! And earlier this year, the president signed a bill re-authorizing even the most abusive parts of the PATRIOT Act. It seems that Obama has lots of respect for government power, and little or no respect for the rights of the people. Just like his predecessor. Democrats and Republicans are cooperating to grow the power of government and trample on our rights. Please support the Libertarian Party and Libertarian candidates this year. We are the only real opposition. _______________________________________________ I find it strange all the civil liberty activists are quiet now that a Democrat was elected. added by: libertyforall

Oksana Grigorieva: Don’t Blame the Victim, Mel!

Mel Gibson’s lawyers say Oksana Grigorieva has lied about her injuries and tampered with evidence regarding his alleged assault on the mother of his child. Now Oksana’s spokesperson claims she is the smear campaign victim. Stephen Jaffe says that “While Mr. Gibson’s camp has floated a variety of false claims to try to distract the public from the true facts at hand, it is telling that his camp has not once denied that it is Mr. Gibson’s voice on the published recordings.” Those being the Mel Gibson tapes . It’s true that the actor’s lawyers haven’t denied it’s him on the tapes, which paint him as a bona fide crazy man. They’ve suggested that the tapes may have been doctored by Oksana and his rants taken out of context – big difference. Both Oksana and Mel claim the other is slandering them . Jaffe then adds, “It is common in such cases for those who perpetrate domestic violence to vilify the victim of that domestic violence. One would hope that those who are close to Mr. Gibson would take a more constructive approach.” The spokesman’s response comes in part after reports surfaced last week intimating that Oksana’s injuries may have been self-inflicted – which she denies. The judge in their custody battle over eight-month-old Lucia is at least somewhat skeptical of the allegations, given the possible inconsistencies of the evidence and testimony from Mel’s wife, Robyn, that he never abused her in 28 years. However, other experts say her injuries are consistent with her story. “It is obvious not only from the photograph of Ms. Grigorieva, but from other evidence …that he struck her in the mouth and temple, that she sustained injuries as a result of his blows,” says a source close to the Gibson investigation. “The notion that her wounds were ‘self-inflicted’ is ridiculous and not credible. No legitimate, independent expert analyst could reasonably draw such a conclusion.” What do you think?

Fat Joe Calls Sexual-Assault Allegations ‘Shocking’

‘It’s one of the worst things you could have your name affiliated with,’ MC says of allegations. By Shaheem Reid Fat Joe Photo: MTV News Fat Joe said that when he was accused of sexual assault , it was one of the “ugliest” things anyone could have said about him. Last month, Joe and members of his crew were questioned by police after a woman claimed to be inappropriately touched while in Joe’s limo in Madison, Wisconsin. A spokesperson for the Madison police confirmed to MTV News on Friday (July 9) that the complaint against Joe has been withdrawn. “What happens is, you know its ugly,” Joe told MTV News earlier this week. “It’s one of the worst things you could have your name affiliated with. There was a young lady and she was talking to my man. But I never even said hello to the girl. Nothing. Next thing I know, cops was knocking on my [hotel] door.” Joe says he was astonished when he learned of the allegations. “I was like, ‘This is shocking to me,’ ” he recalled. “It was an ugly case. The girl said somebody fondled her. I was like, ‘This is like magic, ’cause I don’t know what y’all talking about.’ I got back [to New York], it was a rumor, ‘Oh, he talked to cops.’ That’s ugly. But I know it would be cleared. It got cleared the next day. It’s disgusting to get your name dragged through the mud for something like that. I didn’t even say hello. I had no contact with this person. It was crazy.” Joe added that no one in his circle questioned his innocence. “They already knew. The texts I was getting, the people was like, ‘Yo, my man. We know better than this.’ I didn’t have nobody like, ‘Really?’ ” Related Artists Fat Joe

Obama’s Afghanistan "black" jail confirmed by IRCC

Earlier this week, the International Red Cross confirmed the existence of a secret “Black Jail” within the Bagram prison complex in Afghanistan, where high-value detainees were held and allegedly abused. Since then, additional details have continued to emerge. The New York Times reported last November that former prisoners and human rights researchers had described how prisoners were held at the facility for weeks at a time without being allowed outside contact. The BBC also obtained accounts from prisoners who said they had been subjected to isolation, sleep deprivation, and cold. The American vice admiral in charge of detainees, however, continued to deny both the existence of a separate facility and the allegations of abuse until the International Red Cross confirmed the claims. Now The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder has been able to paint a clearer picture of the facility. His sources tell him that it is run by the Defense Intelligence Agency's Defense Counterintelligence and Human Intelligence Center (DCHC), whose operatives perform the interrogations on behalf of a subunit of the”elite counter-terrorism brigade” known as Task Force 714. Task Force 714 was formerly commanded by General Stanley McChrystal, who now leads US forces in Afghanistan. According to Ambinder, DCHC is a “relatively new organization,” which absorbed many of the previous functions and staff of the Counterintelligence Field Activity after CIFA was accused of spying on American political groups and was implicated in the Duke Cunningham scandal.
