Teresa Giudice, Melissa Gorga and Kathy Wakile of The Real Housewives of New Jersey appeared on The View yesterday. But the castmates did not do so as a group. Due to what she referred to as “family issues,” Giudice refused to conduct her interview alongside Gorgoa and Wakile, telling the co-hosts: “We have family issues that we need to resolve and I didn’t think that today was the appropriate time, you know, in front of an audience and it to be done in just a few minutes.” We gotta give props to the Bravo producers for staging this controversy and finding a way to extend the feud beyond their show. And negative props to The View for allowing itself to be used in such a manner. Meanwhile, an insider tells The New York Daily News that Gorga “flipped out” when she learned Giudice would not be on stage with her, supposedly telling someone over her cell phone “Our plan is ruined… we have to come up with another way to take her down.” From where does this rivalry stem? The show’s scripts, of course. But specifically from Giudice saying Gorga was a “gold digger” and would leave her husband for a richer man. Teresa has since apologized for those remarks… on the cover of a supermarket tabloid . Clarifies a spokesperson for Gorga (yes, Melissa Gorga has a spokesperson): “Any insinuation that
This is pretty great. In a commencement speech to Wellesley High School seniors this week, teacher David McCullough Jr. delivered a highly unusual message for such an occasion. Simply put, he told the class before him: you are not special. Said the son of a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian: “Think about this: even if you’re one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you.” David McCullough Jr. Commencement Speech What was McCullough’s point? That accolades have come to mean more than “genuine achievement.” As a consequence, he said: “We cheapen worthy endeavors, and building a Guatemalan medical clinic becomes more about the application to Bowdoin than the well-being of the Guatemalans.” He concludes by emphasizing “selflessness,” which can only be achieved by one realizing this overarching theme, reiterated here again: no one is special . Along the way, McCullough manages to bash Donald Trump , Barney, the Baltimore Orioles, Mr. Rogers and the narcissistic Twitterverse. Even more impressive? The speech was met with rave reviews from those in attendance. “For once someone told us what we need to hear and not necessarily what we wanted to hear,” said one student. Watch the speech above and react below: What do you think?
Perry tells MTV News that fans will see ‘exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Katy Perry shared a lot with us on Wednesday during “MTV First: Katy Perry,” like how hard she worked to get in shape for her military-themed video for “Part of Me,” when we might hear that duet with Rihanna , and some great new details about her upcoming 3-D concert movie . “It’s closing the chapter on Teenage Dream, but it’s giving you such an inside perspective,” Perry said when asked what fans will get out of the moviegoing experience this summer. “This film, you’re going to see it from my best friend/buddy perspective, you’re going to see exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything.” Perry went on to say that because she went through so much personally and professionally during her most recent concert tour, she wanted to share those experiences with her fans. “That tour was so life-changing to me. I learned so much, I went through so much along the way,” she said. “I’m not necessarily trying to prove anything to anyone, but not only will people really hands-down know me after they see this film, but you’ll see me as the Dorothy wearing the red ruby slipper and at the end of it all I’m the [Wizard of] Oz as well.” Perry also promised that while there will be a few fun theatrics in the film to make the best use of the 3-D cameras, none of them will be of the clich
In The Vow , Rachel McAdams plays Paige, a Chicago sculptor who’s wife to Leo (Channing Tatum), the owner of a recording studio. The two are talking about starting a family, clearly giddily in love, when they get into a car accident that results in Paige taking a slow-motion header through the windshield. She sustains a brain injury that leaves her with amnesia, losing all memory of meeting and having a relationship with Leo. He finds himself having to convince the woman he married of the depth and strength of their connection when to her he might as well be a stranger. While all of the above is true of the film, the second from Michael Sucsy (who also directed the 2009 Drew Barrymore/Jessica Lange Grey Gardens ), it buries the lede, which is that Paige is missing everything that happened in the last few years — not just Leo, but moving to the city from the upscale suburb of Lake Forest in which she grew up, leaving law school to become an artist, breaking off her engagement with smarmy attorney Jeremy (Scott Speedman) and cutting ties with her family after a giant fight, the details of which we don’t learn until late in the film. She’s shocked to find that she gave up straightening her hair, that she lives in a funky loft and wears boho clothing, that she’s become a vegetarian and, if the gasp she gives when told that Barack Obama is president and she voted for him is any indication, that she only relatively recently became a Democrat. Indeed, Paige has forgotten how to be a hipster. Post-trauma, to Leo’s bemusement, she orders blueberry mojitos, wears prim dresses, gets highlights and declares her favorite book to be The Beach House by James Patterson. Leo first encountered Paige after a series of major life changes (we see, in flashback, how they met at the DMV) and had never met her parents, played by Sam Neill and Jessica Lange, before their arrival at the hospital shortly after she comes out of her coma. Stuffily dressed and taut faced, they have a campy suburban gothic air to them, and are delighted to be able to welcome their daughter back into their lives as if they’d never fought in the first place — which they essentially didn’t, since she has no memory of it. The two parties wage cultural warfare over the dazed Paige, one side offering the comforts of the familiar, including her family and posh childhood home, the other the urban life and love she chose instead. These themes of what makes up one’s identity, and whether Paige is still the woman with whom Leo fell in love without the experiences that came to define her, are a lot more solid than the romance aspects of The Vow . McAdams can turn up the charisma and make (almost) any role grounded and watchable, even multiple ones involving time travel and memory loss. Tatum is like a very handsome steak. Unfortunately, he’s the one saddled with the swoony, Nicholas Sparksesque burdens in the story, from a voiceover about love and fate delivered in an earnest monotone, to spelling out “MOVE IN?” in blueberries when serving Paige breakfast, to accidentally complementing the aesthetic merits of her scrap pile instead of the sculpture in progress she’s working on. He just isn’t expressive enough an actor to carry all of Leo’s pining and heartbreak, as he suffers through Paige’s unintended cruelty as she tries and fails to connect with him and the person she used to be. “I’m so tired of disappointing you,” she tells him after he reacts with exasperated sadness to her inability to remember their past, and it’s an unintended consequence of the casting that she seems reasonable and right in considering moving on, and that one doesn’t feel the need to blubber in response, “But you’re meant to be together !” The Vow, which is based on the story of real-life couple Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, doesn’t turn out to be as gauzily sentimental as its beginning (or its marketing materials ) suggests; though this probably isn’t intentional, it ends up making the argument that one’s romantic memories don’t tend to translate well when shared, as Leo walks Paige through the things they used to do as a couple, from the restaurant in which they used to eat (named, heh, Cafe Mnemonic) to the lakeside spot where they would skinny dip. But the most loving gesture in the film is its consideration that what may be best for someone’s happiness is letting them go, no matter how painful that may be. The ending is — spoiler alert? — an upbeat one, but it’s one the film drifts into, no last-minute gallop through an airport or desperate clinch in the rain. It’s a more grown-up conclusion than you’d expect, but feels anticlimactic when taken in the context of the story’s wobbles between realism and glossy, larger-than-life love story. I’ll admit it: I groaned a bit when word first broke that Steve Carell and Keira Knightley were set to play opposite each other in a romantic comedy set against the end of the world. Knightley, I dreaded, would be reduced to playing May-December arm candy to Carell in her first non-heavy project since Bend it Like Beckham . But as the first trailer for Lorene Scafaria ‘s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World demonstrates, maybe I shouldn’t have worried so much. Maybe . Carell and Knightley play neighbors who set out on a road trip to find their respective loved ones before the world ends after an asteroid is discovering hurtling towards Earth. Scafaria, who penned the zingy hipster romance Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist , makes her directorial debut working from her own script, and from the looks of things this could offer unexpected sorts of laughs, not to mention the rare comic turn by Knightley. That said, Carell seems to be pulling his straightlaced shtick yet again, and Knightley’s afghan-wearing Brit veers dangerously toward manic pixie dream girl territory; will her carefree ways open up his stuffy world view? Will she help him find his way to his high school sweetheart’s arms, only to find she’s fallen in love with him? I hope not. I hope End of the World surprises me. At least we’ll get Melanie Lynskey, Patton Oswalt and Gillian Jacobs to add some colorful bits along the way. Verdict: Tentatively going along for the ride. [via Yahoo ]
Bon Iver, J. Cole and the Band Perry also in the mix for coveted statue come Sunday. By Gil Kaufman Nicki Minaj Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Whoever ends up staying in their seat when the Best New Artist trophy is handed out at Sunday’s Grammys shouldn’t feel so bad: They’re in pretty good company. Recent years have seen such multiplatinum stars as Justin Bieber , Drake , Lady Antebellum and Taylor Swift come out on the short end in the category. Then again, there’s a distinct possibility this year’s winner could make history by becoming the first dubstep act ( Skrillex ) to take the prize, the first true indie rocker ( Bon Iver ) to snatch it or just the second female MC ( Nicki Minaj ) bestowed with the honor. This could also be the year when the music industry fully embraces the fact that just putting a traditional album out is not the surest (or only) path to Grammy glory. Among those in the mix are acts like J. Cole and Minaj, who’ve slowly built up careers by mining the mixtape path to glory and Skrillex, who went from indie punk rock to the top of the glow-stick-waving heap by perfecting a stomach-rumbling mix of dance music, techno beats and rock energy through a series of EPs and singles in front of ever-expanding, sweaty live crowds. Bon Iver (the nom de rock of sensitive singer Justin Vernon) brings his own unique path to the mix. On two acclaimed independently released albums of sensitive, wistful forest folk, Vernon has provided an antidote of sorts to Minaj’s hyper, in-your-face rhymes with music that washes over you instead of hitting you over the head. But his commercial prospects have not dimmed at all due to his chosen path, as Bon Iver tunes have shown up in Miller Genuine Draft ads and have landed him on Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album and, reportedly, in the studio with Alicia Keys. With just her debut album, Pink Friday, to her credit, Minaj has gone from mixtape queen to pop/rap icon in just four years, culminating with her Super Bowl halftime appearance on Sunday alongside Madonna. Along the way, the Queens native has made spotlight-stealing cameos on songs by Kanye, Mariah Carey, Ludacris, DJ Khaled and Drake. Like Minaj, Cole slowly bubbled up on the mixtape circuit to a deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, dropping a number of impressive guest verses along the way for Jigga, Wale, B.o.B and Young Chris. By the time his major-label debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story, dropped in May, he was already being touted as one of the hottest young stars in the business. Though they’ve been playing together since 2005, country trio the Band Perry didn’t release their first full-length album until October. They’ve since recorded with Bieber for his Under the Mistletoe album, scored three American Music Awards nominations as well as a trio of hit singles. More information is leaking out regarding the hospitalization of Demi Moore last night. According to TMZ sources, a friend of the actress’ called 911 because Moore fell into a semi-conscious state due to nitrous oxide inhalation. She was, oddly enough, apparently taking part in what’s known as “whip-its,” the name teenagers have given to this cheap, easy process of getting high. Where is Moore at the moment? Under doctor’s care at a Los Angeles hospital, and Radar Online claims to know why. That site reports that while the star may have been taken away in an ambulance due to the abuse of a substance, the real issue at hand here applies to her dramatic weight loss (depicted in the photos above). “Demi is in getting treated for anorexia, as well as other issues that caused her seizure,” an insider says . “She has not taken care of her health at all lately and has lost a ton of weight.” Regardless of whatever else is going on with Moore, that much is undeniable. We’ll continue to wish the actress a full recovery and will keep readers apprised of her progress along the way.
