Tapping the Energy Below the Earth’s Surface

Image credit: lydurs /Flickr The heat in the upper six miles of the earth’s crust contains 50,000 times as much energy as found in all the world’s oil and gas reserves combined. Despite this abundance, only 10,700 megawatts of geothermal electricity generating capacity have been harnessed worldwide…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Collecting Electricity from Thin Air Might One Day Become Reality

Lightning shows us just how much electricity can accumulate in the atmosphere. Photo: Wikipedia , CC. Ride the Lightning It’s still just a dream, but scientists are slowly getting us closer to the day when we might be able to collect electricity from thin air – or rather, humid air – in the atmosphere. They’re not thinking of harnessing the power of lightning like in Back to the Future (where would you store such a massive influx of electricity?), but rather of collecting electricity from water vapor and dust particles. How would that work?… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Contaminated Truffles Irradiating Wild Boars

Image credit: Subharnab /Flickr When Chernobyl’s reactor number four ignited in 1986, it sent a plume of radioactive fallout into the air that eventually spread across Europe. One place it settled was Germany. Now, nearly a quarter century later, that fallout is reappearing in wild boars with alarming frequency…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Renewable Energy Production Increased 8.3% Last Year in Europe, Coal Consumption Dropped 16.3%

Image: Eurostat The latest EuroStat report about energy production and usage in Europe in 2009 contains some good news (unless you are rooting for coal). While overall renewable energy production increased by 8.3% between 2008 and 2009, for a total share of 18.4% of energy production in the EU, coal consumption went the other way and dropped 16.3%. Part of that is of course due to the recession, but economic troubles don’t explain the whole drop. Read on for more details…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Whisky Biofuel Available in a Few Years: 30% More Power than Ethanol

Image credit: Future Atlas /Creative Commons The food versus fuel debate already has many people worried that we can’t feed the world and power our cars . but some folks are claiming we can power (some of) our cars, feed the world and have a drink in the process. Karin already reported on Scottish efforts to create biofuels from byproducts of distilling , and now it looks like such efforts are paying off. The resulting fuel may even offer significant performance i… Read the full story on TreeHugger

OPEC Needs Low Oil Prices Because it Keeps Alternative Energy Down

Low Enough to Keep Competition Away The Atlantic has a good piece about OPEC, everybody’s least-favorite cartel. It shows pretty clearly why OPEC is probably the most effective enemy of renewable energy. The way they do it is by going against their short-term interests and keeping oil prices relatively low (at least low compared to the kind of prices they could create if they choked off supply more) to assure their long-term market-share and keep alternatives to oil down….
